Report: Raptors Open To Trading Jose Calderon

The Raptors PG recently told the Spanish newspaper, Marca, that he’d “like to have the opportunity to compete for something.” He may get his wish. ESPN reports that Calderon’s salary and GM Bryan Colangelo’s new direction for the team, has the Raptors’ front office considering moving Calderon for another PG: “Sources with knowledge of Toronto’s thinking say that the team is not just going to give Calderon away, especially when he’s back to supplying a typically efficient 10.6 points and 8.7 assists nightly, but I’m told that the Raps are indeed open to moving him. [...] Sources say that the Raps, if not outright shopping Calderon, have let it be known they’re willing to listen, since he’s no longer regarded as their long-term answer at the point. That’s because shedding Calderon’s nearly $11 million salary for next season would be another step in the reset that began with Bryan Colangelo’s drafting of Jonas Valanciunas in June and the hiring of the defensive-minded Dwane Casey as the new coach.”

    Lakers or Heat, the end.

  • http://aol.com wagers

wait now that i actually read the article, no heat, lakers would be a cool fit that if they have the cap space.

  • Justin G.

The problem is going to be finding someone willing to pay the guy $11M although I’m not sure when his contract expires. He has been playing well this year and his defense has gotten a little better since Casey took over. I’m not sure he’s the answer for the Lakers although it’s obviously an upgrade over Fisher

  • http://www.thehoopscene.com lawlow

the raptors should be open to trading anyone on their roster!

  • burnt_chicken

If a deal does come through, i hope eRozan is packaged off as well. I’ve never seen a high flyer who is a worse rebounder, and whose entire offensive arsenal consists of four variations of a fadeaway and the occassional oop. No typo.

  • BRAVO

I kinda agree wirh the comment above me. Im from toronto and i had very high expectation for derozan this year bit all je os showong me that he needs way more improvement. His game lacks aggression and confidence rite now. I mean he is a great person as well as a player sonce ive meet him a couple times bit looks like he might not b a all star like i thought…….smh

  • Smizz

I hope a trade of some sort can happen. The whole Euro movement that Colangelo tried was a complete failure. With their best player (Andrea) injured indefinitely, the team is stuck with no strong scoring option. They need to get Starbury out of China and into a Raptors’ jersey, or just move the team to Seattle.

  • BRAVO

@ Smizz LMAO move “Toronto Raptors” to “Seattle”……yeah right this will never happen. Canada has enuff money to keep our organization. Not even a state in your country could buy our team. and starbury in a raptors jersey? man dude your lame who would want to see this dude play for Toronto? Thats not the direction that our team is going we dont need old duds to perform.

FIRE DWAYNE CASEY – HE ONLY PREACHES DEFENCE (NO OFFENSE)
TRADE JOSE – HE RUNS IN CIRCLES LIKE A RETARD
TRADE ANDREA – HE IS A 7 FOOT EDDIE HOUSE
FIRE BRIAN COLANGELO – HE KEEPS DRAFTING WHITE PEOPLE

  • Bojangles

I will say it right now, %95 of Canadian basketball fans know absolutely %0 about the game. I’m embarrassed by the people on these boards who claim to be Raptor’s fans. Just keep the broken record spinnin people…
On another note, trading Jose to LA to get his pass first mentality, steady playmaking and reuniting him with the greatest Spaniard to ever lace em up wouldn’t be such a bad thing. Not to mention covering up his slow feet with the twin towers under the hoop. Sign and trade Agent Zero for Jose? Gives a chance for a banished player to remake his name on what is already a lost team and gives the Lakeshow a world class playmaker. Something to think about.

  • BallisLove

Im canadian and i cheer for the miami heat

  • Bojangles

We desperately need offense. How’s AI’s jumper lookin these days? haha I’m allowed to dream, right?

  • Matt53

There is no mention of Calderon in the ESPN link that is provided !!! This trade will not happen because there are NOT many teams in the league who can pay 11 million for a PG like Calderon. This is no knock on Calderon but he is over paid like other BC signings , Kapano, Hedo and …

It also does not make any sense for Toronto to move him. Toronto will not be competitive next year so might as well wait till Jose is done his contract and you maybe able to sign him for much cheaper price on a long term deal as your 2nd PG.

  • shutup

The best pg to ever come out of Spain, lmao.

  • Red

Yeah damn that’d be great moving the Raptors to Seattle, Canada sucks its dumb that we still have a team there.

  • http://www.nba.com VanCityBBall

why is everybody doubting toronto and thinking that they should relocate? last year before the lockout they were one of the only markets to MAKE exceptional amounts of money! although i do agree with DemarD i had super high expectations for him this year but he seems… timid? and this club can score (with Andrea)..couple of years from now they will be a team that not everybody will think of toronto being just another lay-over game

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

    Toronto > Seattle.

  • AL

The “best pg to come out of spain” plays like a beast when surrounded with good players, as shown with his play in the NT. The Raptors best season in 2007 came when the team was full of those much maligned euro-imports, with Anthony Parker (euroleague star in his prime), Jorge Garbajosa (world champ), Calderon (world champ), Bargs, etc.

Almost 50 wins. The closest thing to become respected this sorry franchise will be in the next 10 years.

    Keep the eurohate going.

  • quest

toronto is always in the top half in attendance why would they move they make money. whats so bad about toronto? have you been there its better than most cities in the states

  • Red

It’s just a useless team that won’t ever be mainstream even if it starts winning. Eventually the NBA will get rid of it. They need to relocate to Seattle or even here in Chicago, a second team would be good. We’re a huge sports town.

  • http://ZOGS.CA ZOGS

    ^^DUMBA$$ AMERICAN
TDOT IS PACKED EVERY NIGHT YOU FOOL
YOU OBVIOUSLY DONT WATCH BALL, OR ELSE YOU WOULD KNOW SEATTLE WAS A GHOST TOWN…FOOL

  • shutup

I wasn’t hating on Calderon the lmao was because I truly think he is better than Rubio, He’s a better overall player and a better pg, but Rubio gets all the attention even when he played on the national team as a backup to Calderon.

  • Red

LOL actually the Sonics moved to OKC cause the owner was from there & also wasn’t able to get a new NBA arena for them. Don’t you feel dumb. And Raptors suck.

  • http://ZOGS.CA ZOGS

^^^Was it empty or not? Ya thats right SHUT YO UGLY BlTCH A$$ UP NlGGA

  • quest

^^^^ see raptors have passionate fans. all of us are like that if you come on a ball court in toronto say ur from the states and say the raptors should move to seattle….. good luck to u

  • repTdot

First, the raptors are owned by mlse which owns the maple leafs (most valuable team in nhl), Raps (10th most valuable in nba) and toronto fc (2nd most valuable team in mls). Also own an AHL team, tv chnls, and host of different entities that drive up their value. Thus they are one of the most lucrative sports owning companies out there, meaning the RAPTORS will never go any where. Chances are an American team will move before the Raptors will. Sorry but the Raptors are here to stay.

    TDOT

  • Red

Stay losing too lol. And it wasn’t empty There was a huge push to keep them but the owner never intended to stay. Wtf would they do in Canada? Force me to drink maple syrup? The Raptors suck and apparently are relevant only in Canada. Canadians get so mad at us, possibly cause they stay trying to be like us. Lollll

  • Buschfire

I guarantee Vancouver would get another NBA team before Seattle does. Seattle is full of tree hugger’s and pot smoking hippies who sit in drum circles they’re more interested in shutting down the IMF and World bank then they are in attending basketball games. Also to add to the point of the poster above. MLSE’s majority stakeholder sold their shares to Rogers, which is a huge telecommunications company that also owns the Toronto Bluejays. Also in the grand scheme of David Stern and basketball becoming a global sport, this would just show regression in the game if the Raptors shipped out of T dot. As much as the Raptors may suck at the moment we are not going anywhere anytime soon. Trust me if we can build a great team here we’ll make it that you can’t ignore us. Its pathetic the amount of ignorant people that post on this website. USA vs Canada bull#%$T, grow up.

  • http://ZOGS.CA ZOGS

    @Red (probs stand for REDNECK)
**MAYBE IF YOU SPENT LESS TIME F*CKING YOUR SISTER, AND ACTUALLY WATCHING BASKETBALL, YOU WOULD REALISE THAT THEY WERE 20-62**
And I CAN UNDERSTAND YOU AMERICANS NOT UNDERSTANDING THE TERM “EMPTY”, IS BECAUSE YOUR ALWAYS FULL (of food) GO F*CK YOUR SELVES YOU OBESE BORDERLINE RETARDED F*CKS!!!

  • 416-Tdot-4life

Nobody wants to be 350 pounds and gobbles up dollar meals from McDonalds for breakfast, lunch and dinner, you Americans are disgusting. We were on mainstream TV back in 2001 when the Raps made the Eastern Conference Finals. The game was being called on NBC by legend Marv Albert, Bill Walton and Doug Collins check it out on youtube. Don’t tell us Raptors were never relevant.

So how are the Sonics doing… pretty good in Oklahoma City almost 2,000 miles away. Even the Grizzlies are gone, what a joke. Seattle isn’t a basketball city. A real basketball city finds a way to keep their team.

    416 Stand up!

  • WhiteSoxfan

what the hell? why is there even a discussion about relocating the team? The Raptors make more money than most of the teams in the NBA. The Sonics moved out of Seattle because no one went to their games, they were losing money and lacked fans.

@Red why all the hate for Canada? if America were more like Canada and didn’t spend trillions of dollars it doesn’t have on unnecessary wars it’d be much better off. ignorant HATER

  • buschfire

Zogs, its Canadian’s like you who give us a bad name… now say sorry eh! Seriously though back to the original article? anyone? Calderon to anywhere would be tough with his Salary, I say keep him until he comes off the books.. unless we can trade while his stock is up and get a first round draft pick or somthin’ suuurious. I like Dwayne Casey as a coach its great to have someone teach us some defense. unfortunaley due to the short pre season and lack of talent other then bargs our offense is struggling. Thats fine though because at least we have a good shot at a top 5 draft pick in a deep draft + Jonas Val coming next season + mad amounts of cap space to tweak the roster. Brian Co signed all these ghetto ass 1 year contracts for a reason.

  • http://www.nba.com VanCityBBall

^ @Buschfire u are my new best friend! vancouver FTW! thus the name VANCITY-BBall… and who knows TDOT can get better, look at the Clippers now and 5+ years ago… nobody would have thought that they would be challenging a team like the lakers EVER

  • Red

Haha, it’s Canadians that copy us & try to be like us. Hey I don’t mind, follow along. Redneck? Lol, I was born & raised in Chicago, red=Bulls. The Bulls, as in the team that’s way better than the Raptors who suck & are a useless team? Yeah, it’s cool though you guys Acan keep filling up the arena to watch your team lose, and even if u guys win we wouldn’t care.

  • http://www.nba.com VanCityBBall

with kleiza back and if barbosa can stay healthy then they still have a chance to make some noise… but with ABarg’s out and DeMar lacking confidence or something, u wont need any ear plugs

  • http://www.nba.com VanCityBBall

yeah because a team like Charolette is winning AND filling arena’s right? so the only logical thing to do is to relocate them to seattle…

  • Red

But are owned by MJ. If a stateside team starts doing good I.E: Wizards, Bobcats started doing good people would become fans. A perfect example of that is the Clippers. Either way, its pointless to have the Raptors they’ll suck even if they’re winning.

  • Mega

yo buschfire u gaurantee Van to get our team back before Seattle??? U from here? u kidding me? We will never see another NBA franchise man that was a short little day dream of a team that was run into the ground by Stern’s current right hand man, stu jackson. I dont wanna troll I’m just very passionate about how BADLY we got screwed. And one more thing to everyone, here in vancouver the coldest it gets in the downtown and sorrounding burbs is like -4 celsius (25F) for like 3 weeks maybe a little warmer/colder, and snows rarely. So much love to Van but we aint never gettin no team back……noize- hey Slam do a piece on Big Country Reeves and the time he ate Mahmoud Abdul Rauf…

  • price

@red you can say all you want about the Raptors but dont talk sh!t about Canada. Everytime I watch American News it’s about how people cant find jobs or losing their homes left and right. You’ll always hear an American say something about the “Economy”. I aint struggling, I dont know anybody from where I’m from that cant get a job. The fact is, you should be try to be more Canadian. Canadians dont bum rush a store front just to cop a pair jordans leaving people injured. Your ignorance and arrogance just shows how American you are, I wouldnt try to be you EVER.

  • http://www.coachesclipboard.net/FlexOffense.html nbk

    Lol

  • buschfire

Red is just a troll, a waste of time trying to argue with his ignorance…No wonder the US is so backwards. We’ll see whose laughing when you guys fall into another recession.

  • Mike from Spain

@ shutup … why bring it into this discussion? By ‘it’ I mean your Rubio hate. Totally irrelevant, save it for news hyping the guy. I can sympathise with your hating a player, I do ‘hate’ other players… but you seem a bit obsessed

  • http://www.thesmashbrothas.com zen garden

if anyone utah will trade devin harris straight up

  • buschfire

we’ll pass on D harris… thanks but no thanks.

  • burnt_chicken

sigh. Every Raptors post seems to degenerate into the same thing. Don’t propagate hate, people. It’s not just yourself that you make look bad. You can easily take pride in where you are from without needing to insult the nationality of anyone else. Mark Jackson needs to get you all to huddle up so he can shake his head, look everyone deep, and quietly say: You’re better than that.

  • http://www.slamonline.com aman from arkansas

calderon for d. fish and a trade exception

  • shutup

@mike from spain, I dont hate Rubio, I think he’s a good player, I just like Calderon better, didnt wanna even bring his name into it until someone said I hate all European players. And lets make no mistake Tony Parker is the best European PG ever, and in my eyes top 5 in the league right now, how many other active pg’s have a finals MVP under their belt? As for hate, the only sports figure I hate is Tom Brady,(f*ckin tuck rule my a$$) Go Giants!!!!!

  • Bravo

Toronto is where it’s at. Free health care!!!!!! If I was an American I’d move to Canada ASAP! Unless you rich in the states cuz u gon b paying $1000 a night in the hospital which is great when your poor bum like most ppl there :)

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

Calderon would fit in great on the Lakers, Knicks, Magic, Kings, or Mavericks.

  • MikeC.

@Red: you need the Raptors. Good teams need bad teams to beat up on to puff up the W-L record. As far as relocating, cRaps make gobs of maple syrup-caked money. They turn huge profits as a losing team. No fickle, fair-weather, band wagon fans there.
