Reports: Al Horford’s Season Could Be Over

According to the ABC-TV in Atlanta and Yahoo! Sports, the Atlanta Hawks will be without Al Horford for the next 3-4 months. And possibly the rest of the season. Yikes: “Hawks center Al Horford expected to be out 3-4 months with torn left pectoral muscle, source tells Yahoo! Sports.” [...] ”Breaking: per NBA league source #Hawks forward Al Horford ‘pretty much done for the year’ with shoulder injury”

The AJC provides more information on the injury: “The Hawks say Al Horford will miss 3-4 months with a torn pectoral muscle suffered during last night’s 96-84 loss at Indiana. Horford is to get a second opinion on whether to proceed with the surgery. Under the most most optimistic time frame, Horford would return in mid-April. Atlanta’s final regular-season game is scheduled for April 26. ‘It’s disappointing news,’ Hawks co-owner Michael Gearon Jr. said. ‘Al is a big part of our success. Hopefully he will be back by the playoffs. The tough part is we have been playing hard and playing well. We will have to try to get through it. We’re a veteran team and we have to find a way.’ Gearon said he hadn’t yet spoken to GM Rick Sund and wasn’t sure what moves the Hawks might make in the wake of Horford’s injury. In addition to Hoford, Atlanta’s centers include Zaza Pachulia and Jason Collins. Atlanta’s payroll currently is slightly above the luxury-tax threshold of $70 million.”

Yikes, get well soon big guy. Atlanta’s gonna slip big time in the standings behind Miami, Chicago, Philly, Orlando, New York, Indy, and Boston without Horford.

  • JR

    Kobe would play through it.

  • JR

But in all seriousness, I think we’re going to start to see a lot of this. This schedule is absolutely nuts, I feel like every team plays every night. Regardless of whether or not these guys are the best athletes in the world, their bodies are going to break down.

  • JR

But seriously, this schedule is insane. Regardless of the fact that these guys are some of the best athletes in the world, their bodies are going to break down at some point. This is just the beginning.

  • LA Huey

That sucks. Friend or foe, I hate seeing guys go down due to injury.

Was he arm wrestling with kwame? .

  • AdamD

This is a disaster. Hope the hawks can manage to keep going without him in the lineup.

Kwame tore his his pectoral FOULING someone. LMAO

  • Jerome

Damn. ATL had a shot this year. The Chip will go to the top 8 team that can stay healthy.

  • Kadavour

    @ JR ftw!

  • Heals

The only part of watching hoops we all HATE. Coulda swore Bronco D-lineman EDummerville did the same thing and missed 5 months, hopefully Al’s isn’t as bad…

joe johnson is goin to have to step up and live up to his contract.

I agree with JR. As much as I like the unpredictability of this season, trying to cram 60+ games into the shortened season is going to really increase the likelihood of major injuries. I’d hate for any player to risk career threatening injuries just to play 4 games in 5 nights for David Stern.

  • anonymous

very unfortunate. and it usually takes big men a longer time to recover.

  • http://shinefluid@aol.com yada

we can go back and forth about matchups and this and that but honestly its coming down to who is the most healthy

  • bike

Out of shape guys (due to lockout) + acclerated schedule = high number of injuries.

  • lisa

How many times have we said Joe Johnson needs to step up and live up to his contract? Too many times. Get well soon.

  • bull22

poor hawks, unless jeff teague steps it up because joe johnson can’t seem to be the gamer he was expected to be when he signed that ridiculous contract… the HAWKS are a team that will get swepted in the first round.

  • dma

    ZAZA PACHULIA to the rescue

  • robb

Horford wasn’t out of shape. He had been playing during the lockout with the Dominican team or something. Just a freak injury, and wrecks what was so far a pretty promising season for the Hawks.

If anyone saw this injury as it happened, you’d know it wasn’t due to lack of fitness or a compressed season. Stop talking out your neck.
