USA Basketball to Announce 2012 Olympic Roster Pool

USA Basketball plans to announce the 18 candidates for the 2012 Olympic team by January 18. Sources told ESPN that 2008 Gold medalists Carlos Boozer, Tayshaun Prince, Michael Redd and Jason Kidd have been ruled out. Blake Griffin is likely the only player not part of the 2008 Olympic or 2010 world championship rosters who will be considered: “A source close to the process told ESPN.com’s Marc Stein that four players from the 2008 Olympic team have been ruled out of consideration for the 18 2012 finalists. Those four are Chicago’s Carlos Boozer, Detroit’s Tayshaun Prince, Phoenix’s Michael Redd and Dallas’ Jason Kidd. The source also said that Los Angeles Clippers star Blake Griffin is likely the only player who wasn’t part of the 2008 Olympic squad or the 2010 world championship roster that will be considered for the 2012 roster in addition to the 20 players.”

I think Colangelo is an asshole. They play for free and he sounds like a college coach preaching “play for the name in front of your jersey.” Bull-****!
Then publicly berate them when they are concerned about their physical well being. Duh! These guys work day in and day out! Give them a break when they feel ready and STFU about you being upset because they aren’t committed.
Superstars bust their ass carrying their teams, sponsors, and other obligations. Go get some college guys that want it more and wanting to raise their profile. They will run through that brick wall for you; asshole!

  • MUBWAR Posted: Jan.7 at 12:55 pm
    i agree

  • The Seed Posted: Jan.7 at 12:56 pm
Blake Griffin has no business getting a chance to play for Olympic team, there are are no lobs. Blake can’t shoot or play defense. I rather have Kevin Love anyday. BOOK IT!!

  • Eugene Posted: Jan.7 at 1:06 pm
    ^^^Agreed

  • Bmack Posted: Jan.7 at 1:10 pm
Yea I believe K Loves play translates to the international game better than Griffs

  • jsmoke212 Posted: Jan.7 at 1:36 pm
^^ What?! you crazy homes. KLove is a man. Blake is an animal.

  • Nxt1 Posted: Jan.7 at 1:41 pm
man im sure Blake cud throw down on ANY olympic baller n cud rebound all day long…

  • MUBWAR Posted: Jan.7 at 1:53 pm
im the real MUBWAR. since when did I comment an hour ago, I was sleeping. fix this slam

  • jarrett Posted: Jan.7 at 1:59 pm
    Blake Griff over Kev Lar

  • JTaylor21 Posted: Jan.7 at 2:17 pm
    and KLove plays defense?

  • Red Posted: Jan.7 at 3:07 pm
I’d take K. Love any day.

  • Gametimeweezy Posted: Jan.7 at 3:31 pm
K Love should already have a roster spot. I’d like to see Bynum over Blake as well.

  • Jukai Posted: Jan.7 at 4:11 pm
Er, not to give the obvious, but why not K Love AND Blake Griffin?
    Paul/Deron/Rose
    Kobe/Wade/Durant
    Melo/Lebron
    KLove/Griff
    Bosh/Howard
You can go big, you can go small, you got shooters, you got slashers. Who am I forgetting?

  • shavon Posted: Jan.7 at 4:35 pm
there is a reason Blake Griffin is being considered…and if you guys knew basketball the reason he is being considered is because of two reasons.
The Basketball reason is Blake can grab rebounds and get blocks if he needs to.
The other reason is because blake is an entertainer and they will make loads of money if he is on the team. You guys got to remember money runs the world. But he still has to tryout, he might make it.

  • Jukai Posted: Jan.7 at 5:05 pm
Why can’t Blake Griffin get blocks in the NBA if he needs to?
Both Griffin and Love will make it, unless Amare takes Griffin’s spot, which I don’t see happening.

  • op Posted: Jan.7 at 5:05 pm
    @Jukai Stoudemire.

  • op Posted: Jan.7 at 5:07 pm
Why not? He has more experience and can play at 5.

  • Tarzan Cooper Posted: Jan.7 at 5:07 pm
Ivan johnson needs to be on the team.

  • riggs Posted: Jan.7 at 5:49 pm
umm blake has been shooting and has a developing post game, dude is improving eff what you heard.

  • The Truther Posted: Jan.7 at 6:33 pm
    it should be
    Rose/DWill/CP3
    Kobe/DWade
    Lebron/Durant/Melo
    B.Griff/KLove
Howard/Bosh at the PF you could argue Amare &
at the C you could have Bynum
The try outs would sure be fun to watch!

  • Gametimeweezy Posted: Jan.7 at 6:49 pm
@shavon USA Basketball is all about the golds

  • manu Posted: Jan.7 at 7:28 pm
    Ivan Johnson for MVP

  • robb Posted: Jan.7 at 7:40 pm
DHoward at the PF???? you’re nuts

  • Far Posted: Jan.7 at 7:57 pm
Saying Blake Griffin only do lobs is just ignorant. It’s like admitting you don’t watch him play. There’s a reason he managed to average 20 points, he does a lot of forcing his way to the rim and has a decent amount of moves in the post. But I do think K’ Love would be pretty beast too. TAKE BOTH!

  • Red Posted: Jan.7 at 8:11 pm
Blake is an all-star not a superstar. K. Love beats griffin every time.

  • Jukai Posted: Jan.7 at 9:01 pm
Right now K Love and Blake are kind of the same. All offense, great passing, subpar defense power forwards who provide things in different ways. For the NBA, Blake is a better option on a team. But for FIBA, Kevin Love is a better option. He’s a three point threat who doesn’t need the ball (check), easily the best rebounder in the entire league (check), and with the hand checking, smaller lane, and a lack of a three second defensive violation means K Love could be a decent defender
And that whole last part is gonna hurt Griffin offensively.
    It’s an easy choice!
But, still, Griffin is good enough to make the team anyway.
Bynum and Amare would be fine, but the article said the only person not on the 2008 and 2010 rosters coming to the tryouts is Griffin… sooo are Amare and Bynum even invited?

  • Björn Atli Posted: Jan.7 at 9:04 pm
Durant deserves the start over LeBron/Melo after he put the team on his back in 2010

  • Jukai Posted: Jan.7 at 9:20 pm
Yep, just did the math. Basic addition and subtraction. If the article is correct, they are only doing the squad from the olympics and the worlds, plus blake griffin, minus Redd/Kidd/Prince/Boozer. So 12(2) + 1 – 4 = 21 in consideration. And they are:
PG: Derrick Rose, Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Russell Westbrook, Chauncy Billups, Stephen Curry.
SG: Kobe Bryant, Dwayne Wade, Eric Gordon
SF: Lebron James, Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant, Rudy Gay, Andre Iguodala, Danny Granger
PF: Chris Bosh, Kevin Love, Blake Griffin, Lamar Odom
    C: Dwight Howard, Tyson Chandler
So three have to be chopped for the 18 player deadline… say goodbye to Billups (a bit too old, don’t need vet presence with Kobe there), Curry (too injured) and Granger (We don’t need a poor man’s Anthony when we have Anthony on the team).
A few guys I could see getting on as a surprise: Eric Gordon, for his spot up shooting, Andre Iguodala because he actually becomes a lockdown defender when he can handcheck, and Tyson Chandler, if once again the NBA confuses the fact that pure size isn’t exactly what you need in the FIBA games.

  • Gametimeweezy Posted: Jan.7 at 10:19 pm
Right… Blake would have to beat out not only Kevin Love but also Rudy Gay who started over Love and primarily played power forward, and played it very well on the worlds team.
Eric Gordon has a very serious shot and played fantastic at the worlds. He would have to beat out Iggy who was killer in transition, and Curry who shot the ball very well himself.

  • Tarzan Cooper Posted: Jan.7 at 10:27 pm
I would like to see iguodala make it, he plays great in international ball. Rudy too, but melo bron durant are all making it.

  • house Posted: Jan.8 at 1:12 am
    wtf no White Mamba?

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Jan.8 at 4:59 am
lol who is White mamba again?

  • spit hot fiyah Posted: Jan.8 at 7:33 am
^scal, he is already a lock though.

  • spit hot fiyah Posted: Jan.8 at 7:35 am
@the seed, saying that blake griffin only catches lobs and therefor is not good for international play is contradictory. Remember that the ball is live on the rim, on offense and defense. put back city!!!!

  • Jonathan Posted: Jan.8 at 9:18 am
Can you put a player from Miami Heat. (America)

  • ... Posted: Jan.8 at 10:47 am
lol people want kevin love to play at the olympics, if someone actually watched the games instead of looking at boxscores they would know he doesn’t play any defense at all its sucks to be a wolves fan when his number would suggest he’s comparable to dwight howard but they have no impact on the game and his team is the worst in the league. Coach K would never put up with his stat padding nosense of playing no defense to just set up to get rebounds and boxing out his own team mates. With that said im not saying blake griffin is the answer but maybe they should consider lemarcus aldridge.

  • Matt Posted: Jan.8 at 12:31 pm
Some of your guys comments are so crazy. It makes me wonder if you even watch basketball. Here’s how it’s gonna be. Rose/CP3
    Wade/Kobe/Eric Gordon
    Durant/Melo
    Lebron/Kevin Love
D12/Blake/Bosh Couple things here, Gordon may or may not play because of his knee injury. But remember he was one of the better players in 2010 and they need a shooter off the bench. Lebron will play the four so KD can start, and Melo will come off the bench as well.

  • Gametimeweezy Posted: Jan.8 at 12:50 pm
^Absolutely and thats why Rudy Gay started over Love at the worlds and was their best defensive player. Love isn’t great on D but I can see a role for him simply because he is becoming a prolific rebounder and the shortened international 3-point line. One guy no one mentioned was Brook Lopez.

  • Gametimeweezy Posted: Jan.8 at 12:51 pm
that was for the 10:47 comment

  • #6marjon Posted: Jan.8 at 5:05 pm
glad griffin is getting a shot love should be there to though

  • Jukai Posted: Jan.8 at 6:06 pm
Matt: I don’t hate Gordon over Deron, but I’d be shocked if it happened. Star power goes a long way, plus Deron has some international experience.
Gametimeweezy: Did Lopez play in the worlds? If not, he’s not on the list.
I can’t see Rudy Gay making it, he started at power forward because Bosh/Blake weren’t there, and Kevin Love simply wasn’t the player he is now two years ago… Gay hasn’t improved, Love has tremendously.
Bosh is just better offensively and has shown he can play center well in the international games. Gay MAY be a better fit internationally than Griffin… but what does Gay bring to the four that Melo and Lebron couldn’t? Say what you want, but Griffin does bring a different look even if it may be limited in international play. His athleticism is going to get him buckets regardless.

  • Gametimeweezy Posted: Jan.8 at 8:47 pm
^ i agree 100% they really don’t need Rudy Gay unless for a defensive role. I only mention him for nostalgic purposes because he has put in work for the national team where Blake hasn’t yet. For whatever minutes Blake would get he would no doubt bring no less than what Vince Carter brought… pure athletic dominance. We have so many great players Coach K and Colangelo really can’t go wrong.

  • Gametimeweezy Posted: Jan.8 at 8:54 pm
but let me just say there is a reason why Dominique Wilkins wasn’t on the Dream Team where Chris Mullin and (cough) Christian Laetner was…

  • Jukai Posted: Jan.9 at 8:19 am
Sure, but that reason was to fit a certain role… Chris Mullin fit the role of a shooter. Christian Laetner fit the role of the extra college white guy they threw in for nostalgia purposes.
Dominque Wilkins would fit the same role as Drexler, who was for all intents and purposes a poor man’s Jordan. He simply wasn’t needed.

  • Mooney10 Posted: Jan.9 at 3:22 pm
Blake and Love both on that team, it’s a shoe in. And Blake can play D, have you seen the blocks this man deals out? I’d take Blake and Love and Amare, no Bosh.

  • Justin G. Posted: Jan.10 at 8:11 am
Exactly Jukai. Back then there was no zone in the NBA and they figured to see plenty of it at the Olympics (even though most played against it in college) so they needed a shooter. Mullin was perfect for that spot. It probably could have been argued Dominique deserved the spot over Bird just based on how they were playing at that point in their careers but they weren’t sending over a first time team of pros without Bird, Magic, and Jordan. Actually, it wouldn’t have mattered if he was selected because correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t Dominique tear his ACL in ’92?

  • TeamUSA2012 Posted: Jan.14 at 9:09 pm
Although I read reports of more than 18 players in the pool. I think those reports r false because we need to submit 18 players names to the IOC by the end of January. Here’s my prediction barring injuries or life situations for the ’12 USAB team. I think it’s safe to say DREAM TEAM again fellas. ’12 USAB OLYMPIC TEAM PG – Rose DWill CP3
    SG – Kobe Wade
    SF – LBJ KD
    PF – Melo KLove Bosh
C – D12 Chandler I’m confident about the above. Not so sure about the 6 invitees I think don’t make this squad unless one of the above can’t play) but definitely make the next USAB senior men’s competition. 6 Invitees that don’t join USA in London Westbrook. Gordon. Lamar Odom. B Griffin. Bynum. Gay. 4 of these guys did great in ’10 Worlds but they’ll l b playing in
’14 Worlds. Whatta list. Go USA!
