Anthony Morrow to Honor Drazen Petrovic in 3-Point Contest

Awesome idea from the New Jersey Nets’ Anthony Morrow, who plans to honor the late, great Drazen Petrovic during All-Star Weekend. From the Bergen Record: “Anthony Morrow plans to wear a throwback Nets Jersey when he represents the Nets during All-Star Weekend. But here’s the cool part: Morrow, who has been waiting his whole career to make it to the three-point shootout, doesn’t want his name or number on the back of the jersey he wears. Morrow plans to honor the late Drazen Petrovic by donning his famous No. 3 during next weekend’s three-point shootout in Orlando. ‘I always said when I got in the three-point contest, I would wear his jersey,’ Morrow said, adding that when he signed with the Nets before the 2010-11 season, Petrovic’s jersey was the ‘first thing I saw when I walked in.’ Morrow will be the first Net to participate in the three-point shootout since Petrovic in 1992. Petrovic was killed in an automobile accident in 1993 at age 28. His number three was retired by the Nets and hangs a the team’s practice facility in East Rutherford and at Prudential Center. Morrow said he asked the NBA for clearance to wear Petrovic’s jersey during All-Star weekend.”

Like the idea, good gesture on Morrow’s side. Respect. But I still remember when Rudy Fernandez in the 09 Slam Dunk Contest wearing a “Martin” Blazers #10 jersey and the TV comentator only got to say “Martin? Who is that? Ricky Martin?”… Fernando Martin was the first Spanish player to make it to the NBA, died of a car accident too, he was only 27. So it’s nice to see some appreciation for Drazen.

@Knick94 I think Sabonis was better, Dirk definetly is, lets not get carried away; tragic absolutely. Very classy move by Morrow although I would rather of just saw the jersey on him instead of reading about it week(s) prior, it cheapens it slightly because it makes it look like a PR stunt.

Kenny Anderson and Drazen were a hell of a backcourt

Theres no way, NO WAY that Dirk is better than Drazen, as good as Dirk is. Just no way.

Drazen was great at his time, but the BEST Euro guy in the NBA, ever? I put Dirk, Vlade, and Sabonis(while still in Europe) ahead of him… Had he been able to live out an entire career in the league, who knows.? Btw, classy move by Morrow.

  • Justin G.

Very classy move indeed. And who knows, if Petrovic’s career had been allowed to play out with the way it was going maybe he’d be considered best Euro player ever, certainly top 2 or 3. Right now it’s obviously Dirk though. It’s not even close. @Boss, I would never put Vlade in that category. Hell, I’d take Toni Kukoc before I’d take Vlade Divac.
