Blake Griffin: ‘Dunk Contests Aren’t My Thing’

The League’s most ferocious dunker says he doesn’t plan on defending his Slam Dunk Contest title during All-Star Weekend this year. Per ESPN: “As of right now I don’t plan on being in it,” Griffin said Thursday night. “Those dunk contests aren’t my thing, I said that last year. There’s a lot of guys that can put on a great show and do some good stuff.’ Last year Griffin won the slam dunk contest, played in the Rookie Challenge and played in the All-Star Game during a whirlwind All-Star weekend in Los Angeles. This year, Griffin, who will be a first-time starter, would like to simply enjoy the weekend and play in the All-Star Game on Sunday. ‘Last year was hectic and it kind of made it unenjoyable,’ Griffin said. ‘So this year, we’ll see what will happen, but I will try to tone it down a bit and get a break instead of being so busy.’ Griffin’s teammate, Clippers center DeAndre Jordan, could take Griffin’s place in the slam dunk contest, but Jordan said he has not been contacted by the league yet. ‘He’s got some stuff that people definitely want to see,’ Griffin said of Jordan. If he was asked to participate in the slam dunk contest, Jordan said he would do it on one condition. ‘If I didn’t have to go against Blake,’ he said.”

“You know, if the NBA can’t fix them, I’d rather pass”

Please remove the “gadget” segment from the contest

  • Yesse

Lol, so now he is too big for it?

Nba can’t even pick the right dunkers, so i was looking forward to see Blake back there.

If they would pick guys like Will Bynum, Terrico White or Nick Young, it would be cool to watch.

  • Justin G.

I agree jetfuel. I think, in terms of creativity and just straight dunks, that DeRozan got robbed of at least being in the final two. He wouldn’t have won anyway because the Griffin hype machine was going to sway the results anyway, even if DeRozan were to dunk from the 3 point line. I mean, if you’re allowed props why not just get a trampoline like the mascots and come up with some funky ish with that?

  • Waggle

We noticed that last year, Blake.

Cosign Justin g., derozan was hosed! Yesse, glad u showing will bynum some love. Dude has springs!

Blake Griffin’s jumping over the car dunk was the worst dunk ever. The dunk contest should be cancelled. The last great dunk contest was Vince Carter’s many moons ago.

  • RobbieJay

^ MKP, i feel you. it was so hyped up im thinkin hes gonna clear the room and the man jumped over the side. SMH

Blake griffin are you F*cking kidding me?

  • 23

i actually liked all of blakes dunks last year, except the car. but his two handed 360 was beast! im very biased when it comes to power dunks. i think blakes performance goes up there with some of the best. also jrich had a REALLY nice performance a while back in his warrior days..

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

Jrich, josh smith, and iggy had the best recent contests. Dwights were good

Will Bynum! Short dudes who can thrown down always have an advantage.

  • Bt

Props in the dunk contest are a joke and have ruined the contest. The current contests pale in comparison to the days of Jordan, nique, vc j-rich etc. Blakes car dunk was the perfect example of this (a choir really? That Is relevant to dunking how?)

To me props aren’t creative because everyone does it. DeRozan was creative because his dunks were not because he did a back flip then dougied and did a two hand flush.

paul george, terrance williams, terrico white, deandre jordan, shannon brown, demar derozan, iman shumpert, will bynum = old school 8 man field

  • http://www.slamonline.com spit hot fiyah

actually remove brown from that list and add jeremy evans

  • Kadavour

i HATE seeing that awful basic as f*ck dunk over that Kia. it’s 100x worsened by slow motion. Before that they crowned Dwight for a high flying layup. it’s sad. the artistry of the dunk is being diluted by the hype machine

  • Lloyd

I saw an interview with Demar from over the summer. Dude seems pretty set against not going back. Can’t blame him…got screwed two years in a row. No props necessary!

  • Holiday

I think Blake knows he shouldn’t have gotten the win last year, plus that French showed him up by actually jumping “over” a BMW and going between his legs… Made Blakes dunk look mediocre!

  • Holiday

Jeremy Evans shouldn’t be over looked, dudes a human pogo stick!

@23 Worst comment ever bro people need to cut it out with the Kobe is better than MJ crap…Let me just end this argument early hand checking was allowed when MJ played it’s not allowed now that (Kobe’s era). Kobe career numbers vs MJ SMH.

    Kobe 1125 Games 36.4 mpg 45%fg 33%3pfg 83%ft 5.3rpg 4.7apg 1.2spg .5bpg 25.4ppg

Jordan 1072 Games 38.3 mpg 49%fg 32%3ptfg 83%ft 6.2rpg 5.3apg 2.4apg .8bpg 30ppg plus Jordan retired at his peak then came back and dominated still.

  • SwissArmyKnife5

Wrong post my bad, but it’s still meant for @23 saying that Kobe is better than Mike.

  • SS

As much as I love Blake Griffin, I don’t think that he should’ve won the dunk contest last year. I think Javelle McGee should’ve won. His dunks were crazy! Too bad he can’t do them again this year to win if he got in. People I think should get in is my boy Iman Shumpert, Javelle McGee, Deandre Jordan, Demar Derozen, and Russel Westbrook. That way there is no obvious winner, they are all nasty dunkers!

Also add Alonzo Gee, to that list do is a serious problem when attackin the rim in cleveland.. that if catch a game or two of them lol..

  • SS

You need to put little man Nate Robinson on the list. What a manchild!
