Crawford to Replace Felton as Blazers’ Starting Point Guard?

That long-term deal Raymond Felton had in mind isn’t looking so promising anymore. Jason Quick of The Oregonian thinks Felton may soon be sent to the bench: “McMillan is cautious of benching Felton for fear that it will strip the veteran of whatever confidence he has. And the coach is not exactly convinced there is a clear improvement waiting in the wings: Jamal Crawford has also struggled with his shot and turnovers, and rookie Nolan Smith has been tentative in most of his limited minutes. But at the same time, the Blazers coach can sense a season is slipping away. He gave himself 20 games, he said, to allow his players to work out their kinks, be it lack of conditioning, lack of rhythm, or getting used to new teammates. The Blazers have played 28 of their 66 games. ‘It’s time the play becomes better,’ McMillan said Saturday. So will he consider taking Felton out of the starting lineup in favor of Crawford? ‘I have to look at it,’ McMillan said. How much more McMillan needs to see before making a change, I don’t know. McMillan has already started to trend toward featuring Crawford at point guard. For the past week or so, he has used the tandem together, but has ordered Crawford to handle the ball and initiate the offense. Crawford has had some of his best performances in this role, primarily at New Orleans, when he had 31 points and eight assists. He also had 21 and six against Houston and eight assists against Denver. What’s more, Crawford is creating opportunities and shots for his teammates, and thereby is a threat. Yeah, he is still taking — and missing — a lot of shots. But this team is more dangerous when he has the ball than when Felton does.”

Trade felton and some picks and some cash for nash. Blazers would be a very dangerous team and who wouldn’t be rooting for them. Camby can protect nash defensive decencies (though he’s been playing good d this season) and we all know cash will be enough to entice cheap skate Sarver to make the trade.

crawford is a baller, he can play either guard position with ease but he’s better at point, purists will hate because he scores well but bottom line he can run point with some of the best in this league

    Good for my Fantasy team

damn felton is really that bad huh?

I hate to say it but I called this one. Trading Andre was a bad move. Blazers would have been better off getting some bigs to take the load off Aldridge and just suck it up till a real opportunity for a elite PG came along. And in terms of bigs I’m not talking about Craig Smith or Thomas, I mean a a true power forward over 6’9″ who can score the rock (JJ Hickson was available at the time of the Felton transaction for instance). When will the Bazers learn that the very rare acquisition of a elite level PG is a arduous undertaking. Just watch I’m sure they will trade Felton for another mediocre PG this summer instead of waiting.

Now what the Blazers should do is to stop grousing around, keep starting Felton (Crawford playing the PG will further disrupt the flow of the game), and then go all in trading who ever they have to (except Aldridge) to get an elite level PG. Crawford and Felton are averaging 10 turn overs per game combined, owch!

Crawford shoots to many low % shots.

@Stephen Gram nice analysis. I was a big fan of Dre Miller/Aldridge combo and instead of Portland getting more big man help. they go out and mess up what was already working. Miller ran the team just fine. Portland also dissed Miller by benching him in the West conf. semis vs. Dallas, in favor of broke knees Roy. They rode Roy because he won the game before that for them, but it was fools gold, they were foolish enough to think he could do that in back to back games on those knees and Nate McM decided to bench Dre Miller in the 4th quarter. I’m not saying Portland would have won but the writing was on the wall concerning Miller. Aldridge needs help down low, a big man.

@fruizm I agree, Crawford is a beast, one of the best SG in the league

Maybe I was right about Felton after all. He was proving me wrong at the beginning of the season. This is why we shouldn’t make judgements after a handful of games

@fruizm I agree, Crawford is a beast, one of the best SG in the league. He is under rated

D’Antoni’s system can make a sack of onions into a borderline all-star PG.

    Seems so. Don’t tell anyone.

I also have Kobe, Melo, Josh Smith, Greg Monroe, Javale McGee, Tyson Chandler, Joakim Noah, and Paul George… 44-12 in first place tell me my team isn’t nasty

  • shutup

@gametimeweezy ur team ain’t nasty, but ur league is just nasty. haha

Ray Felton sucks. i hate his game. i hate the way he runs, i hate his ugly and super predictable cross over dribble, i hate how he complains and i HATE his defense. Nate is exactly the kind of coach Jamal needs and i think he can get the best out of him.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Yeah you were right NBK. lol. I still think he is a great PG for that team. Not sure why he hasn’t been able to keep up how he started the year. Kadavour…. A little far with the Felton hate doncha think?
