Derrick Rose Not a Fan of Dancing During All-Star Game Intros

While LeBron James and Dwight Howard danced around happily during the East All-Star intros on Sunday night, Derrick Rose hilariously refused to take part in any of the goofy fun. He explains his reasoning for looking so serious. Per ESPN: “I can dance,’ Rose said after Sunday night’s All-Star Game. ‘But there’s a time and place for that and I don’t think it was right, then and there.’ Rose drew criticism from some fans around the city on Monday because he didn’t dance during the pregame introductions. While LeBron James and Dwight Howard put on a little show for the fans, Rose stood stonefaced on the side and kept his cool. He’s not worried about what people think of the fact he didn’t dance. ‘I don’t care,’ Rose said. ‘You just know that’s me, man. If you would have saw me out there dancing, you would have been looking at me different. I’m just me. I can’t be anybody else. I think that’s what people see.’ Rose also said that he didn’t know if James or Howard were mad that he didn’t dance with them. Rose, who has repeatedly talked about how he doesn’t enjoy playing in pickup games, like many other All-Stars did over the summer, admitted that he still doesn’t feel comfortable playing in glorified exhibitions like the All-Star Game, even though he’s been selected three years in a row. ‘Not at all,’ he said. ‘You know this is not my game at all. But I just love being out there. Just seeing guys, seeing what they do. And it’s exciting when you’re out there. Just seeing how guys are really professionals. They’re great at what they do; scoring the ball, rebounding, whatever they’re doing. They’re out there for a reason.’”

cosign smh.. Personally? I don’t care if rose dances. It would be nice if did though, and I’d really enjoy it bc rose dances like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZczejHLBaG4 and for everyone holding up rose as the antithesis of lebron….. lebron and rose are A LOT more similar than they are different. just fyi.

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

and everybody acts like lebron is this huge arrogant @sshole. I don’t see it. going to another team with multiple all-stars/ great players and admitting you need help isn’t arrogant at all… it’s exactly the opposite. what’s arrogant is chasing everybody else away and thinking your so great that you don’t need anybody’s help. not that d.rose did that… but I’m just saying.

  • Treshiq

I love Drose..he’s beastly..but his personality is a bit monotone..My chin would have dropped had I seen him dance. He just doesn’t seem like the dancing hype man type. I only disagree with the “time and place” the all-star game is a fun exhibition game ….so I think if you ARE gonna dance..that’s the place to do it.. but i don’t fault the east starters for dancing or rose for not dancing… to each his own.

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

I can’t believe people honestly said “oh just bc he danced he didn’t play well” ya’ll must’ve not been watching the game. and how well did derrick rose play? did he do anything? exactly.

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

can anyone see my comment at 2:44? it’s a clip of rose dancing. here it is again: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZczejHLBaG4 wouldn’t it be great if he did this?

  • dev0

Lookin like a boss. I understand that’s DRose and we all love him for who he is, but he’s gotta show he’s having fun sometimes.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

You expect Rose to score 30 points in 18 minutes?
Dude was the only starter who didn’t play more than 20 minutes.
11 points ain’t bad for how little he played.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

    14 points, actually.

  • feez_22

… Please people… Lebron james brought a team with mo williams as his sidekick to a 66 win season and game 6 of the conference semis DANCING ON THE SIDELINES practically every home game. I don’t really care if rose doesn’t like to “dance”… but the look of SPITE rose gave the other all stars for having a good time out there AND THEN his condescending attitude to dancing in general which implies that the other stars aren’t serious is what bugs me. He said “there is a time and a place” for dancing… THEY ARE IN THE EFFIN ALL STAR GAME. the time and place is RIGHT THERE. Rose was just up there frowning having a miserable time. might as well not have showed up. I don’t really care about how rose felt though… its about the look of disgust he had on his face when other stars were having a great time at the all star game. Maybe i am over-analyzing things… but ROSE talks too much. Now some of you guys will say “man you are an idiot” but i mean he talks too much about HIMSELF. remember these quotes (paraphrasing) 1. Pre-2010/2011 nba season- “why can’t i be the MVP? why can’t i be the best player in the league”? … name me a star that has said that the last 10 years. basically begging for MVP. i’ll wait. 2. “there is a time and a place for dancing and basically this isn’t MY time or place” – The all star game isn’t your place to dance? hmm… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZczejHLBaG4 watch this guys. 3. this isn’t a quote but this is about rose not even recruiting guys to be bulls. its like he smites guys… even the best of players (kobe to name one) recruit great players (dwight). its like rose doesn’t want them cramping his style. there are numerous others but they are subtle. People never bring them up. imo, rose is a quiet douchebag. gets a pass bc whenever people talk about a douchebag, chicago fans flip it and talk about the boisterous douchbaggery of kobe/lebron/howard. thats all.

“From this point forward, excessive celebration of any kind is banned during player introductions. Excessive celebration includes dancing, shimming, shaking, getting down, rockin’, or any exaggerated hip movements”
    David Stern

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

nah I hear you enig… but I’m just saying. Everybody saying that lebron played “badly” “doesn’t win as much” or “didn’t take this or any game seriously” bc he was dancing/acts silly is wrong. This is not a criticism of rose as it is certain commenters logic.

  • feez_22

lebron dancing in every home game in 2008-2009=66 wins with mo williams as sidekick, sweeping first 2 rounds of playoffs, avg 38-8-8 on 50% shooting in the conference finals and losing in 6 because mo williams and the other guys couldn’t hit an open shot… best playoff series numbers since early 2000s shaq. wow what a non-serious, non-keyed in player. Derrick rose not dancing in every home game in the 2010-2011 nba season= 61 wins, beating pacers in 5, hawks in 6, losing in the conf finals shooting 35% and sub 15% when lebron guarded him. wow his non dancing has him being such a stone cold killer jeez… i mean that 35% shooting in the conference finals is what winners are made of. non serious players like lebron james can only dream of doing that. Do you guys see my point? its about TALENT and ABILITY. Lebron may not be a killer. but his talent overrides it. Shaq was a fun go lucky guy but when he got serious he was awesome. lebron is that same type of player. Rose is the angry guy but its not like his talent is so much better than anyone elses. People need to give up on the rose humble killer serious bs. That so called “Humble” guy said this the summer before his MVP “why can’t I be the mvp? why can’t I be the best player in the league?”… why can’t you stop talking about yourself and show people what you are? lebron, kobe may be douchebags. but i have NEVER heard them plead for MVP like that.

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

for the record I don’t think he was pleading I saw it as him saying how hard he was willing to work to take his game to the next level but I understand your point feez and also I meant cosign shm nog smh a while back.

  • China

Don’t worry D.Rose, you won’t have to worry about starting next year coz you know who China will vote as the East’s starting PG next year.

    Thanks though.

  • charliewinning

Co-sign everything Feez said. Rose is a great player but things have gone to his head. He’s not in a position to look down on those guys. He hasn’t done a damn thing more than them. Taking yourself too seriously at an asg is lame enough, but throwing jabs at more accomplished players for dancing makes it worse. I’m not a Heat fan in the least but I can’t wait until they humble him AGAIN in the playoffs.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

Yup, Rose is full of himself.
    That’s exactly it.
Same dude who still calls local sportswriters “sir” or “m’am”.
    That egotistical bastard.

  • http://coupdela.com coup

i have to find the old footage of Derrick Rose footworking as a youth in the Chi.

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

coup I already put it up here

  • http://nbasobrietystrike.blogspot.com/ CoolWhip

    D Rose: *drops mic*
How the hell did not acting like a damn dancing fool get spun negatively? Can’t believe this Derrick character would rather be here to compete than dance.
Rose isn’t ‘looking down’ on anyone, just thinks the ‘dancing’ is gay – and he’s right.

  • Nella

That old footage is fake coup, sorry.

  • vtrobot

F*ck corny dancing. People who try to make people dance and get upset when they don’t remind me of people who try to force their religion on you. Do your own thing and don’t worry about what others are doing. Great topic for SLAM.

  • @Deknowz

That man is a K-I-double L-E-R! Him and Durant are gonna have some epic finals battles in years to come!

  • http://slamonline.com The Philosopher

    Shout out @Enigmatic going in…

  • http://www.t-mac.com/tmac/index unf*ckwitable

I would rather dude be himself rather then try and force some kind of swagger like Bron used to. @Eboy, get your hand off it son, no one was criticizing your man for dancing, i wouldnt expect such an irrational answer from the Kobe slurpers if the story had been about kobe dancing.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

    I see you, Philo!

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

Did this thread really happen? Rose didn’t dance because that’s not his style or personality. He didn’t say, “I’m not really into doing the stanky leg and looking like a clown when my name is called”. He just said it wasn’t HIS thing. Those dudes have just as much a right to do whatever the hell they want to as Rose does not too. I don’t understand where this animosity comes from towards Rose.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Brad Long TWO DAYS IN A ROW!?! This is like the return of Ricky Henderson

  • charliewinning

It’s not that he didn’t dance. Who cares if he doesn’t dance? It’s that he was arrogant enough to be disgusted at the other guys who did. It’s fine that he doesn’t dance. It’s fine that they do. But suggesting that the all star game isn’t “the time or place” to goof off a bit is self-righteous; it’s a meaningless scrimmage. He could’ve just said “dancing isn’t me”. He took it further and took shots at dudes who do. Surely your man crushes on him can’t be so serious that you can’t even aknowledge that he shouldn’t have said anything but “it’s not my style”.

  • SikhWitIt

Much respect. The game needs some old school in it.

  • Jerome

@Eboy d rose wouldn’t play in them if he had the option but fans actually like him n vote him in n jeremy lin wouldn’t be an all-star for playing 8 good games while d rose has been good all season

  • http://slamonline.com Brion

@Marco,”D.rose not dancing was my favorite all star moment”….? Where was Mr. serious in the whole fourth quarter? Your coach was coaching, why didnt Chi-town represent? I like Droses game but what a stick in the mud.

  • str8 from samoa

    rose is just being rose

  • J.King

i like how he responded and he’s been this way since he came in the league. for those who say he doesnt smile are probally just casual b-ball fans because he smiles alot in some of his addidas interviews,in some games, commercials, etc. and i remember in an interview he said he likes to joke around a lil bit and having a vince vaugn type of humor.

  • Arthur Woofenden

First of all that was the silliest pregame intro for an all-star game for any sport any time. The music was horrendous (unless you’re a 15 year old young girl). Gimme a break, I was watching the coaches who were so disinterested like they wished they were somewhere else. It looked like Disney meets the NBA with all the dancers and lights flashing and smoke rising. Somewhere the ghost of Bob Cousy, Oscar Roberstson, Pistol Pete, Wilt Chamberlain and all the greats were quietly turning their heads away from the TV. And the rap stuff at halftime, another waste of time. We don’t need this crap. Bring the players out, announce them, have a national anthem, that’s all good, but whoever dreamed up having the dancers on stage with the players is an idiot.

  • mister002

    “D-Rose is a personality-less entity”
Totally agree to Eboys statement. D-Rose is a great ball player and that goes without saying. But I connect with people who have personality. Not Squares. I wouldnt ever wanna hang out with Mr. Rose. I say Mr. Rose because he’s become such a square that i think i should address him formerly.
I like that players are having fun and showing a little bit of color instead of those same political answers and behaviors during the regular season and playoffs. I work 5 times a week for at least 40 hours with squares that i dont like. I have to pretend like im interested in their boring lives and have to address my boss and co-workers in a very square way most of the time….and im in entertainment!
So when i go home and watch the NBA or any sport I like to enjoy all the personalities.
I like Charles Barkleys dumb-ass. He’s “turrible”. I like Lebrons chalk toss. Magic Johnson’s smile etc etc.
I like Peyton Mannings commercials because he shows so much personality and range as a real person.

D-Rose. Is a square. Takes himself a little too seriously…but just like all the other Characters in sports and entertainment. I’ll enjoy his adopted square personality too.
If he was this serious just a couple/few years ago about professionalism and such, he wouldnt have gone to Memphis to play college ball. He wouldve been serious, humble or as i like to say “SQUARE” enough to take his own SAT’s. Imagine that.

  • B-More Mike

How can these people say success has gotten 2 Rose’s head when he same dude that played for Mean Streets with Eric Gordan. Never known him 2 seek the camera. And yeah being stoic might not make you more talented or gifted but at least we know the man is ready. Ready 2 do whatever, whenever! Rose back suppose 2 hurt, all great players back hurt because they willing 2 let all ride on them win or lose. Boston started this stuff, giving everybody an excuse 2 join forces. I just Lebron 2 earn it. A talent like him should not have 2 debate his chip’s, but he will if he wins in Miami. Say what you want how how nobody wins alone, those teams (lakers, bulls, spurs) were built traditionally. When you think of championship teams yeah there talented but you usually get back to that 1 guy who is the lynchpin of everything, how can you say you’re the guy( not saying Lebron but all you) if you play with D Wade? If I was playing with D Wade & Bosh I’d dance 2.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

@ T-Money: I don’t think he was glaring. That’s just his face, you know. That’s just his face (Michael Cera voice). He’s always scowling but I don’t think it’s intentional lol.
I thought Rose’s entrance was pretty funny though. I kind of like that one of the superstars in the NBA is stoic and introverted.

  • JB

why is this an issue. rose stays out of trouble and is one of the most exciting players to watch. not to mention his shoe contract. stay humble rose and keep doing your thing.

  • http://Slamonline.com Mars

Yeah the underlying messasge is here. I feel ya DRose but most dont get it at all. Entertainment. It’s a hell of a drug.

  • http://www.nba.com Red

Wow mister you wrote a whole novel you bum lol.

  • IamYOU

WOW d.rose… spoiling all the the fun.. now I will bench him in 2k12 during all stars sheesh!

  • Jerome

DRose by any other name would still damage your grill.
The ASG used to be something to see, but now it is commodified
crap everything in the U.S.A. becomes, eventually.
Glad some played hard on both ends of the court.

  • UDamnFools

Did someone really type the ghost of Oscar Robertson. Man some of you need to stay away from bball convos. When will you soft ass fans stop crying about Free Agents exercising their right to go to another team. You all are the type of idiots who would stay at a job where there was no potential of growth because you want to show that you’re loyal. Idiots.

  • http://www.t-mac.com/tmac/index unf*ckwitable

Lets be real, anyone who gets any enjoyment out of watchin those big dudes dance is gay.

  • http://slamonline house

I like Rose because he is down to earth and has no qualms about showing who he is, i.e., his love for his mother and team-mates. So he didn’t dance… so what, maybe the music isn’t his thing but playing ball certainly is. Personally I don’t enjoy the Allstar games as it is usually, (99% of the time) offensive showboating. Is it entertainment? Yeah for sure but some guys play to win and DRose is obviously one of those guys, despite it being the ASG. I’d take DRose over a lot of these other NBA stars who seem to be enamored with the whole idea that playing in the NBA is some kind of ongoing popularity contest.

  • T-Money

house, if you’re referring to bron and dwight and saying you would take rose over them then you’re on that dope.

  • Garnett’s Grl

Why should he have too??????????? He doesn’t dance so what? His game is entertaining enough…..Love U D Rose, Dare To Be Different!

  • lemskiz

lolz. let them be. no one’s wrong or right here. some like to have fun, while others prefer to be like Rose. quit honestly, it’s not worth our time debating what type of personality you should bring in at an ASG

  • JP7

Lebron and Dwight are sweet, slightly zesty actually. Dem dudes is soft as a box of puppies (RIP Pimp C). But really tho, dudes can dance if they want but them boys dance like girls and that intro is an awkward time for that trash, just post up like a damn grown ass all star man. Howard shoulda went for MVP instead actin a damn fool and jacking up treys, and lebron wanna do all dat booty dancing but don’t got the balls to take the game winner in an all star game. Soft as a box of puppies lmao

  • JP7

Rose just ain’t that kinda sugary sweet smily pants a-town down low beyonce dance doin ass ni**a
