NBA Changes Rookie-Sophomore Game Format

All-Star weekend is a little over two weeks away, but today the NBA announced a format change in its annual Rookie-Sophomore Game. For the first time, rookies and sophomores will be mixed together on teams, with TNT Analysts Charles Barkley and Shaquille O’Neal drafting the squads. From NBA.com: “Barkley and O’Neal will serve as the general managers of two opposing teams, each with nine man rosters, consisting of NBA rookies and sophomores drafted from a pool that was previously selected by the NBA’s assistant coaches. Also, TNT’s Kenny Smith will serve as the honorary Commissioner and Ernie Johnson will host the live BBVA Rising Stars Challenge Draft on Thursday, Feb. 16, on NBA TV at 7 p.m. ET. The pool of players will be announced on Feb. 8, followed by the live BBVA Rising Stars Challenge Draft on Thursday evening, Feb. 16. Fellow TNT Analysts Mike Fratello and Steve Kerr will be part of the coaching staffs for the teams, with Fratello joining TEAM CHUCK and Kerr joining TEAM SHAQ. The Head Coaches for both teams will be the lead assistant coaches from the 2012 NBA All-Star Game coaching staffs.”

I don’t see this format lasting very long.

I wanted to see Rubio and John Wall go at it but changing the format is a good idea

This is gonna be hilarious. I’m down.

I like it. They should do this for the All-Star game. Lebron would draft all his friends, and Kobe would pick anyone who would be willing to pass him the ball all the time.

The same should be done for the ASG. Have like the leading vote getter from each conference pick the players.

  • Iman Elbanna

    sure i will play

the nhl was doing this for a while now. funny the nba is stealing there style

    Jeremy Lin!

  • Red

    LOL @Zak.

  • LP

i wouldn’t mind seeing an Allstar game like this…

  • Ldub

So ROOKIE/SOPHOMORE name would need to change no? I think it should be left as rooks vs sophs. braggin rights. Now its almost like All-star jrs.

I dont think it is a long lasting idea. They should of just had the rookies and sophomores from the western conference vs the rookies and sophomores from the eastern conference.

  • robb

Gary Payton and C-webb should be the announcers

Would have rather see Steve and Fratello pick the teams. Or Chris Webber and Greg Anthony.

  • riggs

are yall kidding? this is gonna be hilarious. Remember when chuck was drafting all time greats and he started with A.I.? this is a great change.

    @robb, YES

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

and I would also like to see a Team Lebron vs Team Kobe match for the ASG.

  • tavoris

they had to change it. Otherwise, we would have seen stretches where Rubio or Irving or Walker or Knight or Shumpert would have to guard Griffin/Monroe/Cousins/Favors. 2012 Phrase of the year – COMPETITIVE BALANCE.

  • ab40

    puhlease pair blake with rubio?

  • http://nbacheapseats.blogspot.com Chendaddy

Agree with @Money$hot. If they really want to change it, and I think it’s fine the way it was, I’d also like to see East vs. West. But this draft is going to be hilarious because Chuck’s going to do two rounds and then not know who the hell the rest of the players are.

  • http://www.slamonline.com quest

@megatron lebrons just gonna pick all his teammates and have an tv special because they lost

  • http://www.nba.com VanCityBBall

im not a fan of this idea, imagine if u were one of the rookies/ sophomore… the competitiveness that i like before is to see whose better, the NBA draft class of xxxx or yyyy, think of the bragging right? but ill wait and see maybe im wrong

  • kev

    I dig it!

  • swag

The entire NBA All-Star game should do what the NHL does with the draft. Much more exciting/interesting than the same exact East vs West players every year. Imagine Kobe and Lebron on the same allstar team.

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

Could be fun. Just put Rubio and Blake on the same team. That way we can see a through the legs bounce pass off the backboard windmill reverse alley oop. Or you know, something like that.

  • brandon

john wall rick rubio blake griffin, thas not fair

  • Charles Breen

    cosine ROB

  • Racing

Griffin is starting in the All-star game folks. He won’t be participating in the rookie-sophmore sideshow.

I’d enjoy a game in the style of the Hoop Summit, but I’m not sure if there’s enough international rooks to make it work..

  • http://www.optimabbc.be Max

    Is Blake even gonna participate?

  • Yesse

    Lol, funny.

  • LA Huey

Lots of guys going to be disappointed when they find out Blake won’t be in this game. I don’t like Chuck and Shaq picking these teams. I think it should be Wall (’10 1st pick) and Irving (’11 1st pick) as the captains.

  • http://www.twitter.com_dfrance dfrance21

Blake played in both games last year, why not this year? They changed it to different days years ago for this reason. Now he may think he’s too important to play this time around, but he did do it last year so I wouldn’t automatically rule it out… unless he’s already said he’s not playing. lol But I don’t like this change, there is no point to the game now. It used to be to showcase the rookies, then it was for draft class bragging rights. Now it’s just an all-star game restrcited to dudes in their first or second years.

  • michael johnson

I want to see paul george play in the rookie sophmore game and slam dunk contest
