Nets’ Owner Mikhail Prokhorov Says He’ll ‘Sell Everything’ if He Becomes Russia’s President

Mikhail Prokhorov wants to become the president of Russia so badly that he claims he’d give away much of his personal fortune, while selling off all his businesses (including the New Jersey/Brooklyn Nets). From Bloomberg: “Mikhail Prokhorov, Russia’s third- richest man, said he’ll give $17 billion of his $18 billion fortune to charity if he defeats Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and three other candidates to win the presidency next month. ‘I’ll sell everything, all my assets when I become president and donate almost all of the money to charity,’ Prokhorov said during a talk show with fellow candidate Vladimir Zhirinovsky that was broadcast on state-run television late. Prokhorov, who owns the New Jersey Nets basketball team in the U.S. and stakes in Russian metals companies United Co. Rusal (486) and Polyus Gold International Ltd., said he’d need the remaining $1 billion for personal expenses after life in the Kremlin. ‘I’ll need something to live on,’ Prokhorov, 46, said.”

Right, hopefully this isn’t BS. Donating his personal wealth while taking office would set a nice precedent. Wish he was American.

Something tells me David Stern will be endorsing the other candidates.

Bahahahah this is hilarious 1) russia politics are about as fair as a venezuelan election…Have an opponent if you must , we all know who’s gonna win…2) Dude who sold this franchise to him? OBVIOUSLY dude’s head is elsewhere…the Nets are gonna suck for awhile…too bad..say goodbye to DWill..
You guys can’t possibly beleive this dude..HE”S INVOLVED IN RUSSIAN POLITICS…you think USA politics are grimy…PLEASE read a book or even a pamphlet about RUSSIAN politics!! sheesh ppl…i know y’all do other stuff besides watch Ball! C’mon now!

prokhorov has no chance, this is all rhetoric. putin needs to look like he has an opponent and prokhorov relies on the kremlin to keep his billions. westerners think he is an independent candidate because of his enormous wealth? the richer you are in russia, the more you are reliant on the kremlin and insider politics. putin isn’t going anywhere

This guy is crazy, he wants people to be working 60 hour weeks. The third candidate, whatever his name was, could actually be the best choice, but it’s not gonna happen.

man I so hope he would give 14 billion to charity – maybe there is some hope with the human race, I know this sounds a bit weird and hippy like but just think, there are starving people all over the word and a man with 14billion who just thinks “mer what the hell I dont really want it”!!!!???? @ treshiq: Hugo Chavez was democratically elected and, at one point, had a higher approval rating than every American president in the last fifty years, tying John F. Kennedy. I’d say Venezuela’s democracy is just fine compared to America’s.

    of* the last fifty years.

  • Putin Posted: Feb.7 at 10:04 pm
That would be the best thing for the Nets. This guy has given up on them.
