Orlando Magic Waived Larry Hughes

The Orlando Magic parted ways with Larry Hughes last night, reports the Sentinel: “The Magic are down to one less guard after waiving guard Larry Hughes after Wednesday night’s win against the Washington Wizards. Hughes played almost 14 minutes, scoring two points on 1-of-4 shooting. Hughes was was signed as a free agent by Orlando on Dec. 9. He appeared in nine games this season with the Magic, averaging 1.3 ppg. in 12.7 minpg. The Magic might be signing another point guard, with Jameer Nelson (concussion) not expecting to return until Monday at the earliest. Chris Duhon is now their lone point guard.”

Had no idea he was still in the L. Played for 8 teams over 12 year, a career .406 shooter. He produced for a couple of decent seasons & then got paid. I remember him being on the IR more than anything about his game…

Seems right. When he was on the Knicks, I recall saying out loud “I can’t even imagine how hard it is to make it to the NBA, but I’m 100% convinced that I can turn the ball over and force terrible shots for far less money than Larry Hughes makes.” I continue to stand by that statement. If any NBA team needs an over the hill, out of shape guard to turn the ball over and take awful shots, I’m available for the low low price of $18/hour.

Hughes never got any practice or playing time with Orlando. The minutes quoted are for games he appeared in (which were mostly junk minutes at the end of the game). No way Duhon is a better point guard than Larry Hughes today. Duhon’s minutes and points are lower, and Hughes has a better defensive game.
Hughes still will play in the NBA this year, teams need a 6 foot 5 guard that can still cover the passing lanes.
Remember, he took Lebron to his only other appearance in the finals, playing the point (out of position) for Cleveland. Too bad Coach Brown did not let that young team run versus playing a half court slow game back then.
