Report: Clippers to Sign Kenyon Martin

After the summer lockout and a handful of players heading to China for a job, it looks like the first of the pros to play in the Chinese league is headed back to the NBA. Mike James of The Los Angeles Times is reporting that ex-Nuggets power forward Kenyon Martin has agreed to terms on a contract with the L.A. Clippers, bolstering a frontcourt that’s been starving for depth since the season’s start: “The Clippers and free-agent forward Kenyon Martin have agreed on a mini-midlevel deal that will be finalized as soon as Martin passes a physical, according to an NBA individual familiar with the negotiations. Martin, who played for the Xinjiang Tigers in China and had been required to wait until their season was over before rejoining the NBA, was cleared to return to the NBA by FIBA, the international basketball federation, Thursday…Martin has a home in Los Angeles and is a friend of Clippers guard Chauncey Billups, a teammate with the Nuggets. Other teams that had been interested in Martin were the Lakers, Miami Heat, San Antonio Spurs, New York Knicks and Atlanta Hawks.”

    can k-mart get alleys?

  • J.C. Posted: Feb.3 at 1:33 pm
They’re ridiculously thin up front off the bench so it makes sense for them. Hopefully he’s still got something left in the tank and those knees hold up…

  • JTaylor21 Posted: Feb.3 at 1:36 pm
This is a great pickup for the Clipps. Their backup frontline looks better than most team’s starting frontcourt.

  • Wayno Posted: Feb.3 at 1:38 pm
    Solid!

  • shutup Posted: Feb.3 at 1:38 pm
Good fit, do you think he’ll start and maybe Blake at the 3? and for those who say Blake cant play the 3, when they played the thunder he was guarding Durant.

  • LA Huey Posted: Feb.3 at 1:42 pm
Haha, red. After reading red’s comment, I imagined CP3 tossing a Blake/DeAndre-certified lob to Kenyon only to see it sail out of bounds. Nice signing for them. Now if only they could fill their vacant coaching position…

  • nbk Posted: Feb.3 at 2:03 pm
    Orange, you were saying?

  • nbk Posted: Feb.3 at 2:04 pm
Blake can’t play the 3. That is absurd. Outside 16 feet Blake Griffin shoots 35% on 5 attempts a game. And you suggest making him a fixture on the perimeter? lmao — Regardless, Caron Butler is better then Kenyon Martin as a basketball player anyway.

  • Holiday Posted: Feb.3 at 2:09 pm
God I’d love to see Blake mouth off the K-Mart and get KO’d… Just saying!

  • LakeShow Posted: Feb.3 at 2:11 pm
They will bring him off the bench without a doubt. He still got hops even now. LobCity x2

  • Slick Ric Posted: Feb.3 at 2:25 pm
this cool, I wanted to see him go to the spurs.

  • T-Money Posted: Feb.3 at 2:31 pm
cp3, chauncey, caron, blake, jordan. mo williams, kmart, randy foye, gomes. damn.

  • bike Posted: Feb.3 at 2:35 pm
Kenyon’s not the player he once was. The only thing you can lob at him now is an eggroll thrown underhanded.

  • Allenp Posted: Feb.3 at 2:43 pm
    ^lies
    He still gets up.

  • AD Posted: Feb.3 at 2:46 pm
it helps but they still need help

  • LakeShow Posted: Feb.3 at 2:47 pm
Bike, funny, but he can still jump. Unless you have seen footage of him lately that I haven’t seen. Last year he was #14 in Dunks per game.

  • floe Posted: Feb.3 at 3:20 pm
and they need to sign jr.

  • davidR Posted: Feb.3 at 3:45 pm
dude can still jump. isnt the monster dunker/blocker he used to be, but he can still get up there

  • -MAS- Posted: Feb.3 at 3:55 pm
Carmelo for Deron! Make it happen Donny! I mean…Make it happen!
RICKY RUBIO at the Rock…who’s going to be there?

  • Paul H Posted: Feb.3 at 4:00 pm
Great pick up. That kind of toughness and defense is an asset coming off any bench.

  • Da-Meat-Hook Posted: Feb.3 at 4:16 pm
Co-sign Allenp, davidR, and LakeShow, KMart’s still an above average athlete who’s strength is still finishing in traffic. Although Martin will help, I still think LA’s bigs’ horrible f/t shooting (Blake 50%, Jordan 47%, Evans 33%) is gonna cripple them in the playoffs.

  • Mtothes Posted: Feb.3 at 4:42 pm
Ugh… Come on Buss make somthing happen the red headed step child is taking over!

  • Mariano Posted: Feb.3 at 5:03 pm
Should’ve come to SA. He would’ve got real minutes here and he would’ve made us a real contender. I sense a trade coming

  • O Posted: Feb.3 at 6:30 pm
I’m just glad he didn’t sign with Miami. I hate the Heat!!

  • vctmac Posted: Feb.3 at 6:32 pm
floe said it, they need JR, they dnt have an actualy 2 guard all of them are pointguards, foye, mo, billups, paul, bledsoe. if they get someone who can slash and shoot the lights out, itd be over, chauncey has worked with jr before and i think cp3 also. so they can turn him into a good fit. i dnt think martin is necessary but a good addition.

  • fruizm Posted: Feb.3 at 6:43 pm
@vctmac….so basically you just want the Nuggets to become the Clippers haha.

  • burnt_chicken Posted: Feb.3 at 7:13 pm
lob city indeed…Man! these Clips are athleticy.

  • Tyquan Posted: Feb.3 at 7:18 pm
This is a good pick up for the Clippers after losing last nite to Devner. Gallinari lit them up last night because after Deandre Jordan and Blake who else can you rely on Ryan Gomes is good but they are pretty thin up front. Maybe they should trade Randy Foye and or Mo Williams for a real shooting guard over 6’3″ I love Chauncey but he is not the answer at the 2 maybe better suited to come of the bench if they can get a starting shooting guard J.R. Smith would be all they need but the Knicks should think about gettin J.R. as well he would be perfect off their bench too. Kenyon Martin has a lot of game left he’s gonna fit in well with the Clips I think.

  • justlenny Posted: Feb.3 at 10:15 pm
You have to be $hittin me! Go to the heat for effs sake. who wouldnt want to play with the king?

  • davidR Posted: Feb.4 at 12:04 am
da-meat-hook, good point about the clipper bigs terrible free throw shooting. that’s gonna be a huge weakness come playoff time

  • mango Posted: Feb.4 at 3:40 am
    HELL YEAH

  • JML-G Posted: Feb.4 at 5:40 am
so any word where Wilson Chandler, JR Smith and Aaron Brooks might end up?!

  • nbk Posted: Feb.4 at 5:47 am
Wilson Chandler will be a nugget. I think that’s basically a guarantee.

  • ML Posted: Feb.4 at 5:52 am
Solid pickup for the Clipps K-Mart will bring that toughness & defense and dude can still dunk not like he use to though.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER Posted: Feb.4 at 10:30 am
@nbk: Knicks need J.R. Smith’s perimeter shooting more, and there’s only one 2.5 mini mid-level exception to use. Kenyon would have been a great addition for the Knicks frontcourt rotation, but not at the expense of missing out on a guard like J.R. Smith, who will make a much bigger impact on the Knicks who need more perimeter shooting than they need another 4 who isn’t going to draw his defender out of the paint. Wish Kenyon Martin the best though…BTW, notice K-Mart didn’t choose the Heat? That’s right, set Miami glow sticks down, Eboy. lol

  • IAMORANGE4EVER Posted: Feb.4 at 10:33 am
    *those Miami glow sticks.

  • O Posted: Feb.4 at 5:58 pm
We need a PG. Why aren’t we targeting Aaron Brooks? JR Smith is another ball hog who doesn’t play defense. Plus he wants to sign with Chicago. Sign Aaron Brooks and let’s keep it moving…

  • nbk Posted: Feb.4 at 6:36 pm
No money. They can’t get either.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER Posted: Feb.4 at 6:59 pm
The Knicks are the perfect fit for J.R. Smith, who will be out to showcase his talents for his next contract, and he’s the perfect fit for the Knicks, who need guys who can hit perimeter shots and spread the floor. Right now the Knicks are the worst 3 point shooting team in the L, and opposing defenses are clogging the paint because of it. As for Aaron Brooks, please stop. That is NOT happening. Nor are the Knicks getting Wilson Chandler. SMH

  • nbk Posted: Feb.4 at 7:03 pm
JR Smith already said he won’t sign for the MLE. Like 2 days ago.

  • burnt_chicken Posted: Feb.4 at 9:48 pm
You know what would be funny? If the Hornets could sign all three, trade a piece, make a push in the us-against-the-world vein, and win a ring for Stern.

  • quest Posted: Feb.5 at 1:06 am
who even has money to pick up jr smith?.. guess we gotta pull out the 2K to figure this one out

  • Gametimeweezy Posted: Feb.6 at 12:16 am
    Damb Chris Paul!

  • Gametimeweezy Posted: Feb.6 at 1:18 am
Two All-Stars (CP3 and Blake), two former All-Stars (Billups and Butler), two ‘just a step below’ All-Stars (Mo Williams and Kenyon Martin), two potential All-Stars (DeAndre Jordan and Bledsoe), four more college All-Americans (Ryan Gomes, Craig Smith, Brian Cook, Randy Foye)… what more could you possibly ask for at this point?
