Report: Minnesota Timberwolves Want Pau Gasol

According to Fox Sports, the Timberwolves would be willing to trade rookie Derrick Williams and some draft picks for Laker big man Pau Gasol (which sounds like a stretch): “A source said Wednesday that Minnesota continues to pursue a possible trade for Lakers forward Pau Gasol, dangling rookie Derrick Williams, who is from the Los Angeles area, and draft choices. The only players considered untouchable by the Timberwolves, who are seeking to add a veteran by the trade deadline, are Kevin Love and Ricky Rubio. The Timberwolves believe it could be enticing for Gasol to play on the same team as fellow Spaniard Rubio.”

that´ll be a heck of a deal for both teams!! derrick + wes johnson or beasley for gasol – WOW!

  • bt

Must be a mistake in the article, Darko wasn’t mentioned as untouchable.

On a serious note though adding Pau would push the Wolves to the level where their draft picks aren’t all that valuable so the trade would be a no go.

I really don’t think Pau is needed given how well Pekovic(?!) has been playing lately. Dude has been a 20-10 threat for a couple of games now.

  • marc

Would this be a plus for the lakers though? Wouldn’t they lose height even though they will get athleticism.

  • Mike from Spain

Wes Johnson is terrible on the offensive end but he could contribute in defense. Beasley is a chucker but he could be serviceable with good coaching. Derrick Williams is a nice 4, the trouble is that the Wolves already have Love. With Gasol the big men minutes would be shared among Gasol, Love and Pek. That’d be reeeeally nice. Perhaps Derrick Williams, JJ Barea (scoring off the bench), Wes Johnson (D at the #2 when Kobe sits) and picks for Gasol would be OK if Gasol’s contract is soon to end… But I don’t see it happening.

How does Kapono play these days? I guess the Wolves could space the floor with him, he does not get any minutes in the Lakers. Could probably be traded for… what do you think? I am not quite sure because I have hardly ever seen Kapono play but given that the Wolves have half of the time a backcourt with Ridnour, Kapono would have to play hopping in one leg to play worse defense. I also don’t know how his contract looks like. But with Rubio running the offense, he does not need to create his shots.

Trade a rookie with potential for a soft spanyard…. I wouldn’t do it, but maybe moves like this is why Minny is in the cellar.

  • Canesta

@Zack “soft spanyard”? First off, it’s “Spaniard”, and second, if you say that Pau is soft, you are either a hater or you just don’t know anything about basketball. This would be a great trade for Minnesota.

  • Mtothes

No PAU is soft. Dude cries all the time as a laker fan I’d be glad to let him go!

  • http://staticseth.blogspot.com/ Seth

@Zack, passing on an All-Star big man and holding onto an unproven rookie? Who knows if he’ll even come close to Pau-like numbers??? If you’re Minnesota, you gotta do this.

  • startown

LA will probably demand Pekovic to be in the trade, he has been playing very well. Geez, I don’t know if you give up on Derrick Williams already?

Beasley and Johnson, well sure, but I am sure the Lakers will demand Williams and Pekovic, and that could make the Lakers extremely physically tough!

Derek Williams has huge upside, when he plays he scores and rebounds very well. He is not quite figuring out the close at the rim and that should come, his dunks have been off the charts though!

  • ripslam

Derrick Williams has been pretty underwhelming for a No. 2 pick, but I think he’s got what it takes. Would be fun to see him play in L.A. I think, but the Lakers are holding their chips for Dwight.

  • cardel

How can Pau still be considered soft? As a Laker fan, did you consider Gasol’s performance against the Celtics in the 2010 finals to be soft? Simply ridiculous… prejudice before reason.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

That is not a good trade for the Lakers whatsoever.

  • http://Aol.com Kyle

If they offer Derrick Williams and Beasley I don’t see how you can say no.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

Lakers better do it for beasley and williams

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

Williams, Beasley, 2014 1st rounder, and Ridnour for Pau and Barnes.
Rubio, Wes, Barnes, Love, Pau with Pekovic, Barea, and Webster off the bench.
Ridnour, Kobe, Beasley, Williams, Bynum with Metta, Fisher, and McRoberts off the bench.

  • Paul H

I believe the Lakers would deeply stupid to accept that trade. Beasley Is erratic and I have not seen anything out of Williams to suggest he will ever come close to Pau’s level of skill and ability.

  • -MAS-

If this happens I can already see the T-Wolves knocking Kobe out of the playoffs…a thing of beauty.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Double J

cosign caboose… i like that trade!!!!

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Like some aspects of it. Hate others. Just get Gil and give that 1.5 million dollar option a try before dumping the guy who made it possible for Kobe to get his 4th and 5th rings.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

    This won’t happen.

  • rob miller

    make this trade asap hurry

  • RunNGun

This trade doesn’t make sense financially since Pekovic has been on a tear. However, the Twolves will need height at the PF/C position if they are to make the playoffs this year; they have a more pressing need at the wing spot-especially a 2-guard.

  • RunNGun

BTW… imagine a Rubio, JR Smith, Beasley, Love, & Gasol lineup…

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

KAAAAHHHHHN would be making a huge mistake taking minutes away from Pekovic. Y’all are set to be competitive for a long time if you just add complimentary pieces. Not giving up your potential for a “star” who is only going to get worse.

  • startown

nbk–agree we (wolves fan) are sitting good right now, and we are not going to win any championships in the next two years, so why Gasol, he will be 10 years older than all the other talent.

I would say Beasley or Johnson for someone at the 2 guard that can score. Although he is small, I kinda wish the Wolves would have taken Kemba Walker he is going to be a stud!

  • KH10

In other news, the Warriors would like to trade kwame Browns corpse for Dwight Howard

  • LaKid

Nope, lets hold off a minute. I understand the need to get younger and athletic but (assuming we’re actually looking at the report) Williams and picks isn’t enough. LakeShow wants/needs to be a contender all the time, I don’t see how this makes them better immediately. Therefore, no go.

  • http://www.slamonline.com aman from arkansas

    do it now!!!!

  • http://nbasobrietystrike.blogspot.com/ CoolWhip

If Rubio could write and spell English properly then I’d accuse him of starting this rumour.

  • Startown

Williams could be a real star, he can hit 3s rebound , defend, really has unlimited skills, but he is raw, Wolves need to be patient with him

  • Mike from Spain

@nbk -> Pau can play at the 4 and the 5. You could have the big men 96 minutes divided among the three, so instead of playing Love 42 minutes, and then Pekovic 35 and Darko 13, you get to play each of them 32 minutes if injuries don’t appear. I think this makes sense, Love is one of the guys with most minutes in the league and he could get injured if he does not rest a bit more. Pau as 4 and Pek as 5 would be awesome as the resting minutes of Love… what do you think?

This is a ridiculous trade. The Timberwolves are looking at a very bright future, and have one of the youngest teams in the league…why would they throw it away on a guy who is approaching the twilight of his career? They Wouldn’t! Derick williams will be a great player and the wolves are not going to give up on him so soon. They dont need another forward…what they need is a Shooting guard. Beasely and Wes Johnson are the 2 top trade baiters. Both are top 5 lottery picks and are young ewnough to still have great careers. Beasely is a disease in Minnesota and they are desperate to get rid of him.

  • golakeshow

If this happens I’m a knick fan

  • http://sl.com Krishan

No it does not make sense. They lose a draft pick + williams, which at this point will be huge for a team that wants to rebuild a young nucleus. Plus I’m convinced that pekovic is the perfect compliment to klove. You put gasol in there and you say goodbye to any semblance of an inside presence. This trade would be folly.

  • Dungeon Family

@golakeshow……You never was a real fan anyway

Skip yo lame ass on then

  • Jo moe

That trade is a Tease. The real trade is Kobe for Darko and a 6 pack of beer.

  • nic

Trade pau for Beasly. I think Minnesota wants a all white starting 5

  • BBaller

I was expecting Pau and MWP for Love!No way the Lakers entertain this trade.Kobe would demand a trade the next day if the Lakers traded Pau for Williams.

  • T-Bones&RosettaStones

It’s a precursor to what everyone’s been waiting for all season. Twolves trade Williams, Anthony Randolph and Johnson to lakers, lakers send Pau and Johnson to Houston, Houston sends Kevin Martin to wolves and Scola to lakers. Lakers turn around and send Williams, Scola and Randolph to Orlando for D12.

  • Truthtell4r

Terrible idea i mean, Gasol would come off the bench? dis deal doesnt make sense… #JustSayin
