Seattle Trying to Bring Back an NBA Team

by Marcel Mutoni @marcel_mutoni

The city of Seattle has never recovered from losing their beloved Sonics in 2008. Since the team was highjacked and taken to Oklahoma City, there’s been scant talk about bringing a team back, but nothing truly substantive took root. Until now.

The Seattle Times unearthed revealing documents that show a serious effort to start up a new NBA team in the city, with plans to build a new stadium very soon:

A wealthy San Francisco hedge-fund manager and officials in the Seattle mayor’s office have been working behind the scenes for eight months to bring an NBA team back to the city as early as next fall and build a new arena, according to emails and documents that reveal a far more concerted effort than previously known. A Dec. 13 agenda for a meeting between the parties shows they were talking about details such as a “Review of Basic Deal Structure,” “Financing Issues,” including “City Debt Capacity,” and “Security for Public Financing.”

The documents, released Friday to The Seattle Times under a public-disclosure request, also provide the first glimpse of how the largely unknown hedge-fund manager, 44-year-old Seattle native Christopher Hansen, approached the city about his desire to buy an NBA team and build an arena south of Safeco Field. In an initial email laying out his vision, Hansen told city officials an arena could be built with minimal impact on taxpayers.

According to the published report, there’s talk of possibly relocating the Sacramento Kings to Seattle.

This is all obviously very early stages. But there are some encouraging signs here for passionate NBA fans in the Seattle area.

Or how about the Seattle Hornets?

  • http://bloghoggers.blogspot.com bloghoggers

(looks at Kings, Hornets, and Bobcats)

Seattle Clippers? Since Seattle is setting up, why not clippers settle themselves to that city instead of sharing LA with Lakers…

  • SactownKing

    Keep the Kings in Sacramento!

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

When the Kings almost moved to Anaheim last year, I was defiant and still said they’d move to Seattle eventually. Let’s see if I end up looking really smart or really dumb.

  • Dhughes

/yea keep the Kings in Sacremento please they have had good yeaars just not recent good years they’ll get back right in few years they hve a couple good players tht can get better.

  • Rik Smits Mullet

The Seattle super mario’s would be a great name for their team.
in the nintendo arena.Seattle make it happen.

  • http://caseyvaughn.com AlbertBarr

Ugh. LEAVE OUR TEAM ALONE OTHER CITIES! Sacramento is keeping the Kings. Find another date.

  • http://kobebeefnba.com LDR4

It would be disappointing if a team was relocated to Seattle because it is exactly what happened to them. Why disenfranchise yet another fanbase? A best case scenario would be an expansion team but that seems unlikely at this point. Seattle needs a team, that much is certain. Bring back the Sonics.

  • Downtownmbrown

    Uhhhhh jimmer in Seattle?!? YES

  • David Moore

Even if they DO bring a franchise back to Seattle, there will be history behind it. The OKC Thunder has rights to all of the banners as well as the championship trophy.

how about the thunder? make it happen stern

  • Brion

Living in Seattle of course i am excited about this possibility BUT, I do not want to aguire another city’s team the way the Sonics were taken from us. Plus it took us a while of losing until we finally got Durant so it would be the same scenario til we aquired some talent.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

    Take the Hornets.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

If Seattle gets an NBA team back, they need to be called the Sonics..

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

^They will be. The city kept the rights to the name “SuperSonics” and the jersey’s that are retired with the city. As for myself, so glad i’m moving, moving, back, back, to Seatte, Seattle!!

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Seattle is a great city, I live in SW Washington, therefor Im a Blazers fan, But always pulled for the Sonics (except for when they play Portland) :)

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Got ya. Interesting. Most Washintonians don’t like the Blazers, but I rarely was down south. I’ve always lived within 30 mins of Seattle while in Washington.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

I like how a bearded Luke Ridinour is holding the flag up on the right of picture. Good stuff.

  • AQWORD

… also peep out George Karl on the left. Bring back the Sonics !!!

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

BossTerry was me at 1:28 to avoid confusion.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Not that it really matters, but 1:28 was not me..

  • shuref00t

SuperSonics = one of the dopest NBA team names (maybe only second to the Bullets). Reminiscing of the Kemp/Payton/Schrempf days. Good times!

  • Ryan.T.

Yes! It sucks that it’ll come at another cities expense though. I’ve been dying without a NBA team in Seattle. Even if I can’t make it to certain games, it’ll be nice hearing Kevin Colabro while watching on TV. And today the OKC Thunder play in Portland, so it’s “Turn the Rose Garden Green & Gold” in honor of our beloved Supersonics.

  • RunNGun

The Hornets franchise makes the most sense to move if Seattle is getting a team back. Seattle is a bigger market (13th overall–then goes Phoenix (14.1), Tampa(14.2), Minneapolis-Saint Paul (15th), and Miami (16th) respectively) compared to NOLA (52nd overall).

As a lifelong Sonics fan I’d like to say that taking someone else’s team is NOT what we wanted to do. However, the NBA set that prescedent when they pushed our team into Oklahoma, and since they’re not willing to expand, the only way is to take someone else’s team. I hate to say that, because I know what it’s like to have a team ripped away, but at the end of the day I just miss having a pro hoops team and want it back in my city.

  • http://Www.slamonline.com TADOne

I will be the one voice against this. If they would have supported the team more before they never would have left. And where was this guy at when they needed the new stadium built years ago?

  • Ryan.T.
  • http://nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

LakeShow gon’ have an aneurysm if he reads TADOne’s comment.
    Meh.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com albie1kenobi

the real crime is the Thunder took an MVP caliber player away from Seattle (along with the team of course), and Seattle now could have a championship caliber team. that’s why no matter what durant/westbrook do, i’ll ALWAYS root against them. i know it’s not them, but it’s a matter of principle.
    fcuk clay bennett.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

TADOne… BS… It wasn’t about support. Sonics blood runs deep in the PNW. There is a passionate fan base that is similar to that of the Golden State Warriors, Blazers, and Jazz. The team was stinking it up the last couple of years before they left and that’s when team attendance went down. Not because we didn’t like our Sonics anymore, but because we weren’t going to support a businessman from OKC coming in and jacking our team, but trying to make a last few bucks off us before they yanked them. The Sonics always had great attendance when they were making noise. Management wasn’t very good and the team was taking a dive downward when they lost Rashard Lewis, and none of the ten 7′ footers they drafted making any progress, let alone panning out to be decent. Sonics are one of the greatest franchises not named Lakers, Celtics, and the tradition will continue once they get a team back.

i hate watching OKC. should be the Sonics

  • Kieran in Dallas

Well said Lake Show. The Sonics were sold to Bennett and he moved them to OKC. That’s why they moved. It wasn’t about fan support and it usually NEVER is when teams relocate. Bennett gutted the team, alienated the fan base, lied through his teeth and asked for the impossible. A $500 million new arena to be payed 100% by taxpayers and it had to be approved in a year. No money out of his pocket. The NBA offered ZERO help. None. You think any city would’ve said “SURE!!!, here’s some money?” Hell no!! OKC Wouldn’t do that that’s why the approved a whopping $120 million dollar renovation, but ironically a $300 million dollar renovation wasn’t good enough in Seattle?? Really? Of course not BECAUSE HE WANTED TO MOVE THE TEAM. Period. Do you think the NBA trying to help Sacramento and New Orleans get deals done is by coincidence? Nope, it’s because they looked like idiots letting Bennett hyjack Seattle and doing NOTHING to stop it. They won’t let anyone do that again. If the Kings can’t get an arena deal done they will leave and it WON’T BE THE FANS FAULT. I miss the Sonics, but the NBA is not expanding. They set the precedence to take someone else’s team and the game of musical chairs will continue.

Thank you NBA, where “amazing” used to happen.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

yeah, Lakeshow is right, Seattle is the only city in NBA history to lose a team for a reason other then a lack of fan support. Which is why it is the only City I support getting a second chance at an NBA franchise. I feel Charlotte & New Orleans never should have received teams after the first failures.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Shout out @nbk for the rare support.

  • http://Www.slamonline.com TADOne

LakeShow: I will agree and disagree with you. I agree that the Sonics have great history and at one point were one of the most respected franchises in the L. But I ask you…how come no local business man or woman stepped up when the franchise was on a downturn? Where was this guy that was mentioned in the article when they needed him and a new arena? The franchise and the fans allowed an out of state financier step up and purchase the team. If he didn’t see a profit being made and wanted to move the team to his hometown then that was his right. Not saying I agreed with it but someone local should have stepped up at the time.

  • Kieran in Dallas

    TADOne,

Shultz had LOCAL BUYERS to sell to. He HAD offers from local investors but CHOSE to sell to Clay Bennett. Period. It’s amazing what people do not know about what REALLY happened.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Owners don’t build arenas TAD. Tax payers do. And the City couldn’t find a location and/or enough dollars to build a new arena. Clay Bennet bought the Sonics promising he would not move the team. Basically once he found out he couldn’t get a new arena, he moved the team.. No local business owner could do anything about it.

  • golakeshow

whoop. I live in vancouver so I can go see kobe destroy the new team!

  • Kieran in Dallas

    TADOne,

Howard Shultz had multiple offers from LOCAL INVESTORS and chose to sell to Clay Bennett. Period. There were people stepping up to help, but Shultz sold out to spite the city.

Bennett asked for the impossible. If Mark Cuban fresh off of a championship asked the city of Dallas to fund a new arena to replace the AAC with 100% tax dollars the city would tell him to f*ck off too.

When OKC asks for a new arena and they will need one soon, Bennett will ask for what? A check for $400 million and nothing from his pocket? Won’t happen.

  • Kieran in Dallas

Well said Lake Show. The Sonics were sold to Bennett and he moved them to OKC. That’s why they moved. It wasn’t about fan support and it usually NEVER is when teams relocate. If a team comes there, the city of seatle was allowed to reserve the rights to Seatle SuperSonics. Which is why OKC are called the Thunder.

  • http://Www.slamonline.com TADOne

Nbk: sorry, that is not correct. Plenty of owners in professional sports have built their own arenas. Most just prefer not to have to foot the bill. And im completely of the whole Clay Bennett situation. But the only reason he got involved in the first place is because no one locally would step up. Clay Bennett is an ass for doing what he did but he is only doing what businessman have done thru out history. The Maloofs in Sacramento are no different.

  • http://Www.slamonline.com TADOne

And let me clarify: I think having a team in Seattle would be a great thing to have. I’m just wondering where all this support system was before the team was moved?

  • LA Huey

TADOne, you need to do your research because it did not go down the way you think. Click my name for the full story.
Also, I live in the Seattle area but I wouldn’t want a team if we’re hijacking that of another great fanbase (not even OKC’s). The “Hornets” franchise could stand to be moved though.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

As far as it has been explained to me, some owners purchase their arenas, but none actually foot the building costs. That is always performed by the city. Then the Owner buys the stadium as a whole, if they have that option.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

The economy just started to take a turn for the worse at that time. Everyone was unsure of the financial situation going forward. You don’t make money as an NBA owner so it’s not exactly an incredibly enticing gig. The tax situation and the lease situation with Key Arena were both terrible. They wanted half tax dollars which was not within WA State budget at all. Governor Christine Gregoire doesn’t like basketball and pretty much stopped any possible progress from going forward. (While she proceeded to allot illegal citizens with college grants and scholarships to Universities on tax payers dime in addition to 1% required art funds for every public building venture, including recycled water reservoirs ) Then Mayor, Greg Nickels also had no strings attached to the NBA organization either providing no positive leadership from within the local political spectrum. Mike McGinn the current Mayor is a much larger proponent and he will be a positive voice. It’s not everything it seems to have cracked up to be a NBA owner these days so I’m surprised there was no one that wanted in on a failing business venture.

Thanks for the synopsis guys. Great breakdown LakeShow. I thought things were bad when Karen Davidson was trying to sell the Pistons. At least the Pistons franchise has the backing of the local government.

    You da man TADOne.
