Toronto Raptors Fielding Many Trade Calls for Jose Calderon

Toronto Raptors head coach Dwane Casey confirmed that his point guard Jose Calderson has been the subject of many trade conversations recently. From the Globe and Mail: “On the list of missions accomplished in the first half of the Toronto Raptors’ schedule, getting Jose Calderon to play up his trade value must surely be at the top. Yet when general manager Bryan Colangelo and head coach Dwane Casey and his staff do their blue-skying for next season, and figure out the point-guard ‘what-ares’ in the upcoming draft, the trade ‘might-be’s’ and free-agent possibilities, they may well reach an obvious conclusion: the Raptors might be best-served keeping Calderon. ‘We’re trying to hold on to him and keep him, but he has played his way into a very high status as a point guard,’ Casey said. ‘A lot of teams have been calling and wanting him.’”

  • CubicleWorker

Calderon + Ed Davis + 1rst round pick for D12..

  • http://www.slamonline.com spit hot fiyah

^and then lose d12 in free agency..

  • kh

I’m very curious to know which teams are calling and what they are offering.

  • Hanoon

    calderon for lin :P

  • Jer Dawg

Get him to Los Angeles and both he and Pau will be rejuvenated. Then Lakers can be contenders again. They get Steve Blake, one of those rookies, and pick Walton with expiring contract. Throw money at Toronto also because their currency is different to offset taxes or whatnot.

  • Stainless

    no….

  • http://nba.com GP23

Calderon has been ballin’ this season !

  • Rainman

@ Jer Dawg: and why would the Raptors do that…?

What is it with Lakers fans and thinking they can screw any team over with pretty much any trade offer? Not every team’s the Memphis Grizzlies.

  • -MAS-

The Grizzlies got an All-Star in the Gasol for Gasol trade. Turned out to be a max-contract player. I’d say the got good value for that trade. Wouldn’t you agree? Calderon for Blake + cash should be good enough. If not add a second round pick and smile.

As a Raps fan I hope they pull a deal for a guard that can play defense. I love Calderon but he is such a liability on the defensive end.

  • timboslice

the lakers are the only place i really see him fitting…i dont hate calderone but as a toronto guy ive seen him at his best and worse, its just time for a change at PG for us. (brandon jennings come on downnnnn)

  • Da-Meat-Hook

I wonder if the same people who flame an aging Derek Fisher for his inability to stay in front of elite pgs are the same people who are pushing for the Lakers to pick up Calderon . . . he is literally a MATADOR on defense!

  • http://www.nba.com Red

Lol who cares if Raps get screwed over they’re a nobody team. Nobody ever talks about them. They talk about the Wizards more than the Raps lol.

  • LA Huey

The Grizzlies didn’t get screwed over. As previously mentioned, they got Marc Gasol and the cap space from Kwame’s expiring contract allowed them to net Z-Bo. If the Lakers pulled off a trade for Calderon, it’d probably be something we wouldn’t have fathomed.

  • dev0

Jose’s always been steady on offence. A dependable mid-range shooter, around league-leading FT%, assist-turnover ratio, and currently 3rd in the L in assists per. His trade value should be huge and def more than Steve Blake of all people. I see the Lakers connection with Pau and old Fish, but as @Da-Meat-Hook said Lakers fans have been pleading for a defensive PG and Jose’s not that. In any case, Raps deserve a quality young piece in return if Jose is moved. If not, Raps should keep him.

  • CubicleWorker

The problem is the Lakers have nothing to trade outside Gasol and Bynum..

I have a feeling a BIG BIG trade is in the works before deadline. I have a feeling Gasol and Bynum will be traded in a 4 or 5 way deal that nets Lakers D12 and a PG.

Also if there is any GM capable of pulling off a big move it’s Brian Calengo (RE: Turkoglu… twice)

I could see something going down involving Lakers, Magic, Minni or Houston (both teams that want Gasol), and Raps with bodies and picks flying all over the place.

  • CubicleWorker

Or what about something like Jose to Utah for a first rounder? Late lottery pick seems like equal value..

  • http://www.circonba.com David

One team is coming to my head: LAKERS. Especially for the 30 points he scored the other day against them.

  • Shem

It’s too funny reading some of the Lakers fans trade offers. They haven’t seen Calderon play once and think just because their the Lakers the Raptors would surely accept. I don’t think Blake and a 1st rounder would be accepted by Toronto.

  • Stainless

if anything it will be for a point guard and a slightly high pick in the draft. like @CubicleWorker mentioned the jazz; it would be like harris and their pick for calderon.

  • LA Huey

Yeah, I think Cubicle’s idea of something like sending him to Utah is more likely.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Trading Jose Calderon is not yielding a first round pick higher then 25 in this draft. Y’all are nuts.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

More than likely Calderon gets traded for peanuts (cap space). Dude is set for about $20M over this season and next.

  • Stainless

he’s easily one of the top point guards…

  • Stainless

    minus the defence

  • Ill Smith

Lmao Laker fans are high comedy. ‘Umm…hello? This is Mitch Kupchak?!? From the great Los Angeles Lakers?!?! Oh my god I think your franchise is soooo cool! Who do you want from my team just take your pick! Oh you want LeBron & Wade for Metta World Peace, Steve Blake & some cash that was touched by the great Dr Buss?! Gosh darn it Mitch you gotta deal!’ Stop it. Only way LA makes a significant upgrade is if Bynum or Gasol goes.

  • Da-Meat-Hook

@ Stainless, saying he’s easily one of the top point guards minus the defense would be like saying the Raptors are easily one of the best team in the league . . . minus the wins. NBK is on point, no team is gonna give up anything remotely close to a lottery pick for this guy. He’s a 10 million dollar role player that’s already peaked, he’s injury prone and doesn’t play a lick of D . . . Further, how would the Raptors improve with Steve Blake and like the 26th pick? It would just be a band-aid transaction for both LA and Toronto if the trade does happen.

  • Shem

Calderon for Devin Harris and Golden State top 10 protected pick

  • http://www.nba.com VanCityBBall

ok lets be honest how many of you guys even seen a Raps game enough to think u know whats best? especially for a guy like calderon, if i told you that Calderon was a good center before reading this article half of you would probrobly believe me

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

I have seen plenty of Jose Calderdon to know him and his $20M contract aren’t going to yield much.

  • Shem

There are plenty of teams contending or trying to get in playoff position (take Utah) who aren’t getting any production from their starting point guard(Devin Harris; 9 points, 4 assists and 2 turnovers) who would be willing to overpay to get Calderon (give up a Golden State pick which is actually top 7 protected). Would that pick necessarily help them when their biggest position of need is point guard and the best point guard in the upcoming draft is projected to go mid teens. This is one of the several situations where Toronto would get good value for Jose.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Why do you think Calderon is better then Harris exactly? He is the wrist defensive PG in the NBA. The Jazz are not giving up Harris AND a pick in the top 20-25 in the 1st round in THIS draft. Every player in the top 20 in this draft is probably going to be a solid pro.

  • http://www.nba.com VanCityBBall

^ @nbk i know you know your bball thats why i said HALF not ALL… and i totally agree, plus its not like TDot is an old team anyways sure a high pick is good but there is nobody really on that team to help mentor derozan for example. its hard to find a PG that can handle all these young guys and at the same time not turn the ball over much

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

    Oh word man

  • Shem

Calderon isn’t a good defender but he’s playing well this year. A team like Utah with solid defensive big men like Millsap, Jefferson and Favors could also cover up some of his defensive woes. Any team trying to get into a playoff spot wouldn’t mind a walking double double with good shooting percentages and a low turnover rate.

  • http://slam! Criminal Mind

You are all funny… None of you know what the hell youre talking about. The raptors will get the best deal possible for calderon… and I will bet that the two GM’s dont bother asking any of you if its a good deal or not.. lol …… Oh we wouldnt give up all that for Calderon… He doesnt play defence hes paid to much money… thanks for the indepth scouting report…. hopefully Colangelo and other gm’s see this because wow this is some pretty good information… LOL

  • http://slam! Criminal Mind

I wouldnt put any of you boobs in charge of my High school basketball team lol…. Arm chair fans i have to admit youre pretty entertaining to read.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Why don’t you share your vast knowledge of what’s going to happen genius. Rather then just talk sh*t. And none of us are saying this stuff to help the Raptors make a decision, it’s called a discussion. Criminal Blind.

  • phoeve

The raptors are nothing without calderon, why would u trade him? sounds prwrtty pathetic to me.
