Tyson Chandler: New York Knicks ‘Can Win a Championship’

The Knicks stopped their recent slide with a win over the hapless Detroit Pistons last night, and Tyson Chandler says that New York is a title contender. Supposedly, Chandler wasn’t joking when he said this. From ESPN: “Tyson Chandler won a championship with the Mavericks last season. In his first official day as Knick, Chandler said the team had enough talent to bring a title to New York. Nearly two months later, the Knicks are in a tailspin … Despite all of that (and delusionally, some would say) Chandler still believes the Knicks — if healthy — can win a title. ‘In all honestly, I still feel like this is a team that can win a championship. I feel like we definitely have the pieces,’ Chandler said. ‘I feel like we haven’t come together yet. It’s a process … I feel like guys are going to have to step up and play roles that they are not necessarily used to. We get everybody back healthy, we get everybody on the floor at one time, then we’ll see what we got.’”

Should have stayed with the Mavs.

    HAHAHAHAHAHA!

  • http://dsfjklf.com Jukai

Of course they can. If the top two star players on every team get injured, what’s stopping them?

  • Pais

So obviously when he says “get everyone on the floor at one time”, he means literally means NY’s entire 12 man roster against the opposing teams 5? But even then I’m not so sure.

  • Fat Lever

…in 2k12 maybe. He needs to worry about taking it one step at a time. The first step was completed last night, win a game. Now string together a few more of what they did last night before making wild assumptions Skip Bayless would be proud of.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Tyson Chandler later went on to reveal that he was completely wasted.

  • l2ising Phoenix

Being a longtime Knick fan, Im happy to see the confidence, but……. We gotta get rid of d’antoni, that run & gun ish is never gonna work in gotham, fire pringles man and slide woodson in. Make it happen Dolan!

  • l2ising Phoenix

If worse comes to worse, package Amare & chandler for D12 and we outta here.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Why do I keep reading New Yorkers panning for Mike Woodson? Does anybody remember the iso-hawks? Or do y’all really think a defensive coach is going to “fix” all those defensive issues?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Orlando wouldn’t do that trade Phoenix.

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

Too many funny comments already. Haha.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

@nbk: actually think woody’s scheme would work for melo and amare (which is effing crazy i know), but the run n gun has highlighted their ball stopping ways.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

who was that? — But anyway, I can see them improving in terms of how many point are scored by their stars, what about defensively? You think playing a sooper slow pace is really going to improve the team? In terms of how many wins they get?

  • l2ising Phoenix

Ok nbk , maybe the trade is a little far fetched, but as for woodson … You wouldn’t agree that he’d be an upgrade over d antoni? Would u rather have a defensive minded coach or dantoni with his broken SSOL offense? I don’t really see any coaches out there who could make a splash with this team. Say if we wait until dantoni’s contract is up, let him go. Who are we gonna hire? Rambis?Saunders? I know for dam sure Phil aint gonna clean up. So woodson is our best option right now , in my eyes of course . If you can elaborate I would appreciate it!

  • JerseyJayhawks

You can’t bash Tyson for having confidence in this team. Lets not forget (you ungrateful bloodsuckers) that Chandler turned down returning to a championship team AND packing his bags to head west to play for Golden State (who was ONE Tyson Chandler away from doing some elite damage in the Western Conference)all to run the 5 for us in NY.
Before this losing streak, you band wagon Nancy’s were on his jock strap…Melo and Mare’s too. Then we hit a skid (which REAL Knicks fans, such as myself, have been accustomed to for some time) and everyone that was shouting praise is now boo’ing. GO CHEER FOR MIAMI!!! Most of you “Knicks fans” live in the moment. Im in the category of someone who looks at the bigger picture. D’Antoni is a great coach…he just doesn’t seem to fit with US. Thats fine, it happens. Lets shake hands and part ways…as soon as we find a coach who’s qualified for the job…WOODSON is NOT the answer! Do with this what you will…

  • Ismael

Keep telling that to yourself Chandler, Keep telling that to yourself….

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

(imo) – D’Anotni SSOL offense is far from Broken. What IS broken, is the Knicks Roster. You can’t expect D’Antoni to run his system with Toney Douglas or Iman Shumpert at the point. To even insinuate one of them can run a PG centric offense is absurd (imo). I have been talking about that since this Iman Shumpert is a PG talk started. So basically, I feel D’Antoni should atleast be given a fair shot. He did have the Knicks as a playoff team that was steadily improving until the Melo deal totally destroyed the roster. James Dolan should be replaced before anybody lol, but he is the owner.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

There Tyson goes again acting like he’s Moses Malone.

  • l2ising Phoenix

I guess your right, but we had many chances to get a pg. When we had duhon , we passed up on bjennings,Lawson, and many more… So who do we blame! Lol.. Ohh man, I’m gonna go cry now. Depression has kicked in. Thank you Knicks!

  • 130623

Think theres more chance the Chicago sky win the Nba championship

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

lol I am not necessarily right, that’s just how I see the situation.

  • KidCongo

    lol @ pais

  • http://nba.com GP23

If they make a trade for Steve Nash, they could get 6th seed in the East. And then they may upset the 5th seed in the first round, and then who knows after that ?? ….

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

They don’t have anything to get Nash with. Phoenix really loves Shumpert, but salary wise that would be impossible.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

I love what a competitor Tyson Chandler is. Hope he’s right and we don’t have to ship him out for Dwight. lol

  • robb

    yeah, and I can do a 720

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeLRym4Q-pg Allenp

Tyson Chandler signed with the Knicks because they offered him a boatload of money. Not out of loyalty or anything else. Huge amount of money, that’s it.
the Mavs didn’t and Warriors seemed like more of a long shot to compete. The Knicks offered the best combination of roster and money. His decision was in no way altruistic.

  • bull22

wow a great laugh! give chandler credit though, just making those comments gives them a few more sellouts for a little while longer. hahahahahhahahah poor knick fans.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

LOL, laugh it up now bull22. Cry come Friday!

  • http://slamonline.com. datkid

the sad thing tho orange is that bulls22 is absolutely right…… which is terrible.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    LMAO

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

I love Chandler’s determination and optimism, but we can’t win a damn thing until we have an actual PG. I had my doubts about our SG situation, but Fields is playing like a man possessed lately. I don’t know WHO’s pinning for Woodson to take over, I know I ain’t one, but I am pinning for Jeff Van Gundy to come back and bring order to the chaos in MSG. Phil Jackson ain’t coming out of retirement to fix a train wreck. He’s coming out of retirement to coach contenders. If – HUGE IF – Baron Davis can actually get back to what he was with Cleveland alone last year, the Knicks CAN become a problem, but the coaching style has to change. B. Diddy’s back and Amare’s knees aren’t built for this 7 seconds or less crap.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Damn O, Jeff Van Gundy is a good idea. I can’t believe that’s really the first time I’ve seen that suggestion. Have i just not been paying attention?

  • Ldub

What in the blue hell is Chandler smoking. They have 3-4 pieces (if you include Fields along side himself, Melo and Stat). Unfortunately, they do NOT have a “team” that can win the chip. If they do, Im pretty sure ORANGE4EVER will make a return. There is no way. They might not even make it out of 1st round (assuming they can make it to the playoffs). And if they get the 7 or 8 seed, then they are gonna have to run up against the Heat or Bulls. SOOO yeah, im sticking with a 1st round KO “IF” they can even make it to the playoffs.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

datkid aint a kid, dat fo sho! ;)

  • davidR

jvg coaching the knicks? i can already see the baggage under his eyes getting heavier

I must say, it’s REALLY GOOD to see I was missed so much by my “SLAMILY.” I can feel the excitement my presence is generating! You know the saying, there is a thin line between love and hate! Click my name!

Wow. Iamorange4ever is back. Everyone was wondering where you’d been the past few weeks. We thought the pressures and expectations of the NY’s season finally got to you. We was worried!

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

organge is back , the world is in order. lmao

  • bull22

believe me orange iam sure there will be tempatures rising at the stinky mecca garden tommorrow night.. even when these teams suck they go all out and i expect no different tommorrow night, biggest game of the season for the knicks this year and iam looking forward to it.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

nbk, i’m surprised you ain’t think of JVG or anyone else for that matter. Everyone’s dreaming and getting wet over the thought of the Zen Master holding it down on the Knicks sidelines, but come on, that ain’t happening. And I still say trade Stat to Philly for Iggy and Jrue – even Iggy straight up if you have to – and sign Kenyon Martin to be the starting 4. Stat just isn’t playing with that fire anymore. Plus the defense of Tyson, Kenyon, Iggy and Shumpert could help take the “pressure” off of Melo to play actual D.

  • http://wagesofwins.com/2012/02/01/kyrie-irving-is-not-the-rookie-of-the-year/ nbk

O, I honestly don’t think D’Antoni should be punished because James Dolan gave him a box of Crayons and told him the City expects him to paint the Mona Lisa. So I haven’t really given much thought to who his replacement should be.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

nbk is still a wild and “crazy” guy…if you know what I mean. ;)

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

LOLOL @ Orange’s comment. And you right, nbk. In all fairness, Antoni’s been given skeleton rosters his whole career here and has had them traded mid-season damn near every year. He was looking like he was poised to make noise last year before the Melo trade, but defense was still an issue. But I still believe that the SSOL system isn’t gonna be doing Amare any favors in the future. He needs to take it easy on his knees (pause) if he wants to make his career last.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

There is no way Philly trades Iggy and Jrue for Stat. Jrue is off limits. But, they might trade y’all Iggy and Lou Williams for Stat and toney Douglass. Unlikely, but possible.
But I can’t see how that trade would help either team to be honest. Might as well trade Melo for Deron Williams like I’ve been saying.

  • http://sdfjklf.com Jukai

NBK: I don’t understand. D’Antoni can turn ANY point guard into a superstar MVP. I thought that was the only reason why that scrub Nash made it in the league. That’s what I was told on SLAM, anyway.

  • http://wagesofwins.com/2012/02/01/kyrie-irving-is-not-the-rookie-of-the-year/ nbk

Lol you didn’t hear that from me.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Tony Douglass is a not a point guard. He’s a two guard in a point guard’s body. And Shumpert is a straight two guard.
Are we pretending like we don’t remember hte Chris Duhon resurgence of a few years back? Are we really doing that?
Bottom line, the system is great for anybody who can pass. That designation doesn’t apply to Toney or Iman. Particularly not when Mike decides to let Melo play point forward.
    Don’t be asinine.
