Carmelo Anthony Doesn’t Want Jeremy Lin to Lose Confidence

Predictably, Jeremy Lin has struggled since his amazing emergence, but teammate Carmelo Anthony want the Knicks’ point guard to keep his head up. Per Newsday: “Carmelo Anthony talked to Jeremy Lin several times during Wednesday’s loss to the Spurs. He even motioned for Lin to throw a bounce pass after his chest pass to Anthony was knocked away. In those huddles, Anthony said he was trying to be a veteran leader to the young point guard, who has come upon some tough times. Lin isn’t producing the way he did when he and the Knicks were rolling for most of February. At times he hasn’t looked like the same player, and he still seems to be trying to get used to playing with Anthony. ‘I wasn’t really talking to him about getting me the ball out there,’ Anthony said Wednesday night. ‘It was more just keeping his confidence at a high level. It’s a learning process for him, for us as a whole. We’re in it together. With him, it’s just a matter of running the team, running the offense, just doing what he has to do, doing what he’s been doing. We rely on him for that.’ Anthony said he’s not worried about Lin’s confidence but ‘my message to him is don’t try to put it all on your shoulders.’ During the Knicks’ three-game skid, Lin has shot 38.6 percent (17-for-44) and averaged 16.0 points, 5.3 assists and 3.0 turnovers. The upgrade in the level of competition has been a factor. The Knicks lost at Boston, Dallas and San Antonio, and Lin was outplayed by Rajon Rondo, Jason Kidd and Tony Parker.”

i’m so fed up with the clutch and closer talk. what if you just miss? rose shoots 82 from the line not 98! sports talkshows and “analysts” are really starting to ruin the game for me. i can’t remember the last time i’ve watched a game with sound on because i just know they’re going to keep feeding us the same tired story lines.

    ^wrong thread?

  • Sxxmi

16 points and 5.3 assists are not bad numbers! That’s better than Jameer Nelson, Jeff Teague, Ason Kidd, Rodney Stuckey, and pretty much half the other starting PG’s in the L!

  • AndifromAustria

I just think they need more time together, getting to know eaxh other. d’antonis system relys on players making decisions. the better they know each other the better these decisions will be. Other coaches draw up more sets which dont allow their players as much freedom. to make use of that freedom players gotta know the game as well as their teammates. neither can be said for jeremy lin especially after teams now know his preferences. it will take him some time to be as effective as steve nash in this system. melo on the other hand doesnt really fit in there at all…

So for how long are Knicks fans going to play the “they need more time” card? First it was Carmelo who needed to ‘gel’ with the team, then when Carmelo was out and Lin was in, then Melo needed to ‘gel’ with Lin. The reality is that they traded their entire roster for a ballhogging, no-defense-playing volume shooter who can’t accommodate another scorer on his team.

  • ripslam

^That sounds a bit dramatic now that I read it, but it’s true, haha. Mr. Anthony ain’t doing wonders for my fantasy team.

Something seriously wrong when bringing back an All-Star forward results in more losses and your point guard’s play is suffering. Either Mike D doesn’t have a clue or Carmelo is the most overrated player in the history of the nba.

RELAX, the Great Jeremy Lin will be fine. He’ll still consume his competition with fireballs from his eyes and bolts of lightning from his arse. Tonight, the Knicks NEED to pay the Bucks back for their previous meeting exactly 7 weeks ago tonight at the Garden. To tell you the truth, as a fan, I want to see a big payback.

  • trueballer4life

since melo came bk the offense is messed up ?..

  • Kablamo

Okay he’s not gonna be isaiah Thomas..give him to grow …16 and 5 is pretty healthy though

D’antoni and his system need to go, he should take Amare with him. They are both hacks. Mike can’t make any player in the NBA listen to him because they have all seen that it doesn’t work come crunch time. It took a minimum paid pg before anything happened. Fire that guy, get Calipari.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com albie1kenobi

    they need to fire Dolan.

  • Bawse

Calapri isnt a talented coach just a great recuiter and will get embarrassed in the NBA again. Melo should not be coaching anyone. Dude needs to look in the mirror and ask himself why is the team sucking when I am back in the uniform. Amare needs to go back to the Wizard and get some heart. D’antoni isnt a championship level coach. He is a entertainer coach. He is a glorified assistant. We need Van Gundy to come back and let D’Antonia an assistant.

I think the person who should be worried about his confidence is Melo.

  • http://www.michaelcho.com M Cho

Lin has overachieved, Melo has underachieved. Lin isn’t the problem.

  • http://coupdela.com coupcoupcal

How this falls on anyone but D’Antoni confuses me. The players are players. The coach needs to work with what he has and create a system around his players’ strengths. Boehiem and Karl never had trouble finding a use for Melo’s talent.

  • Cameron

    The Knicks need Jim Boeheim

Melo has never had confidence problems.

  • http://slamonline.com the kidd 7

Wow you guys are funny what do you think the coach is there for!!!?? To coach so I don’t see how everyone loves to blame all this bs on carmelo. the coaches job is to make it work so that’s what he needs to do!!

  • http://slamonline.com the kidd 7

The d’antoni system will never win a CAMPIONSHIP !! NO defence NO rings and if you know basketball you should no that. Everything starts with the coach!!

  • MDubb3

Knicks need to fire D’antoni point blank, he has a championship kind of roster and they are losing??

  • Waggle

Melo being a leader and dishing out advice?
    Lookout world!

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

Looks like Lin has to get back to his 28 pts 8 TO days.. lol =P

15 years ago today Biggie died. 1 year ago today Melo shot the game winner in Tony Allen’s face against the Grizzlies at Memphis. I get deeper and deeper.

  • http://www.nba.com JB

trade melo!!! knicks have lost their energy since he came back.

  • http://slamonline.com The Philosopher

Lin will be fine… if they move him over to the two.

  • http://slamonline.com 1982

Looks like the Knicks need another string of subpar teams to get back to playing like championship contenders.

  • CSS

Correlation doesn’t mean causality. Just saying.

  • http://slamonline.com the kidd 7

Trade melo…?? That would be so dumb why would you trade one of the top 5 players in the NBA!! Because the coach can’t get them to win and mesh?. And just so you know this knicks team that’s been together for maybe .. a year. Has not had one full!! training camp together since melo got there so yeah I think teams with that kind of talent need those things so leave them alone and let them get it together! It takes time everybody is not the 07-08 Boston celtics

  • startown

the kidd 7: Melo is top 5?

Is he better than any of them?

  • http://SLAM FLIGHT 9

Melow just shut up…. Knicks aint going anywhere bcoz of u and stupid d antoni…..

  • nj2519

what if we let Melo take a good rest for one game and then see what will happen?

    Jeremy Lin is Mello’s mojo.

  • JF9

Not including the games where Lin only played a few minutes, his starter stats thru the Bucks game are 21.1/3.9/8.1 this season. Pretty good for basically being a rookie.

    CP3 is 19.8/3.6/8.4 in his 6th year.
Rondo is 13.8/5.1/10.1 in his 5th year.
    D.Will is 22.4/3.5/8.2 in his 6th year.
    J.Lin is 21.1/3.9/8.1 in his 17th game.

Knicks need to start playing some D!

holy cow, they play d like my grandma!

IF they don’t play D, they won’t win.

    Their offense is fine.

I wish we could play offense with lin, melo, amare, novak and chandler
and play d with chandler, shumpert, smith, fields and jeffries

  • ClydeSays

I think Melo needs the pep talk. He’s got to be on the block at this point. Lin/Chandler/Amare would be a decent core to build around. Melo is great offensively, but he needs the ball & won’t show up on D.

  • Kurino

Somebody mentioned that Melo doesn’t defend. Uh, that’s exactly what D’Antoni wants! LOL

  • FruitMan

I don’t want him to lose confidence either, but I’m afraid he already has. Linsanity is over and the Knicks will continue to be irrelevant. The reason that all of this is so sad is because Lin was my favorite player in the leauge (behind Ricky Rubio of course and now he is hurt!!!!). I don’t even know WHO my favorite player is now. Blake Grinni lol? Point is, I guarantee: the knicks will be bad.

  • Fruitman = dumbass

    @Fruitman, that’s because you’re a bandwagoner.

  • Genuis

im a carmelo fan. but i have to be honest he’s a scorer but a scorer who needs the ball in his hands at all times & when u have a player like that you can’t win as an organization
