Chris Webber is Mentoring DeMarcus Cousins

DeMarcus Cousins says he’s very happy in Sacramento, and he tells the Boston Globe that he’s gotten some mentorship from a great former Kings big man: “Cousins, who doesn’t turn 22 until August, is averaging a double-double in his second season with the Kings (16.6 points, 11.5 rebounds). He is a prototype franchise cornerstone but has endured a lot of upheaval in Sacramento and spent considerable time fielding questions about his attitude. An NBA scout compared Cousins’s footwork with Kevin McHale’s, and he has a solid mid-range jumper and a mean streak. Rumors that he wants out of Sacramento are just that, especially since the Kings replaced Paul Westphal as coach with Keith Smart. ‘Man, that’s something I’ve been dealing with my whole life,’ said Cousins. ‘I’ve got tough skin. They can say what they want. They are always going to have something to say.’ Asked if the misperceptions bothered him, he said, ‘No, because they’re not really trying to understand me. They’re just following the crowd.’ [...] A mentor who has emerged for Cousins is former Kings forward Chris Webber, who played seven seasons in Sacramento. He has tried to offer sound advice, not criticism. ‘I have the utmost respect for C-Web, he’s a real person,’ Cousins said. ‘He just gives me advice, tells me how to handle situations. He went through similar situations so of course he has advice for me. I guess you can say a big brother looking over me.’ [...] ‘Sacramento is where I want to be,’ he said. ‘I want to bring the organization back, help the organization get started back winning. I love the city of Sacramento. That’s where I want to be. End of story. We can dig a hole, throw that topic in there, cover it with dirt, pack it down. I want to be in Sacramento. End of story.’”

Chris Webber still remains one of my favorite players of all time. athletic, skilled, vicious… And SMART. Said It before, I will say It again….TNT, Dump the “big ego” (shaq) and bring back Webber!

  • Rainman

I remember Webber, Barkley, and Shaq talking about doing something like this during AllStar weekend, so its good to see one of them following up on it.

DeMarcus Cousins is blossoming under Keith Smart’s coaching and Chris Webber’s mentoring. You got to be excited if you’re a Kings fan.

Weber Hall Of Famer? I think so, bascially 20 10 and 5. Big CUZ stud! and on his way to stardom.

  • Waggle

Hopefully he isn’t getting any advice on timeout calling.

yeah Diesel, is nice to see Webber actually going for it. Also: I agree with Paul H: last season, Webber seemed to fit in so well with Ernie, Kenny and Chuck. C-Webb is made for TV, did very well in my opinion.

C Webb; one of my favorite NBA players of all time. On and off the court and on TV as an analyst. I wish TNT would bring him back more often and have Shaq there a whole lot less.

Waggle speaking the truth about the timeout! CWebb and the Glove were hilarious! Half the time, I didn’t even know what the Glove was saying, but it was good times.

    @Paul H

Agree with you 100% percent. TNT was so much better with Chris Webber instead of Shaq.

  • SikhWitIt

If C-Webb can teach him how to throw those behind the back dimes out of the post this will be totally worth it. AND F’REAL, BRING BACK C-WEBB AND GP! WHY IN THE WORLD DID THEY BREAK THAT UP?

You guys sound really uninformed when talking about CWebb and the timeout. Watch the ESPN documentary on the Fab Five and get some knowledge. Anyway, Webber is the man and Cousins is wise in learning all he can from him. On a complete side note, does anyone else think Cousins sounds like a young Sheed when reading his comments?

  • Dingo Rob

Not sure what people are saying about the timeout, as far as I remember when watching the game he called a time-out when there wasn’t any remaining, caused a tech foul when down by a couple of points to NC

Does anyone else think HOFers without rings should find it harder to get in or is it simply based on how good you are as an individual?

  • Justin G.

Dingo, it’s not an NBA Hall of Fame, it’s a basketball Hall of Fame. Not that that helps Webber’s chances because obviously he didn’t do anything internationally but it’s why number of rings won’t matter.

  • Madterps

As a Wizards fan, I wish that CWebb would’ve stayed with the Bullets instead of getting traded. As well, I wish that someone like CWebb, Ewing, Olajuwon would mentor Javale McGee.

  • BoWeezy24

    ^ Agree

  • Dingo Rob

Yeh that makes sense, you know he helped some what internationally with Fab5. Put college ball in the spotlight a little more here in aus at least. With no cable back then we only watched what was on free to air, there was enough buzz to give air time and the basketball fan has benefited because if this. Good luck to him
