Derek Fisher Reaches Buyout Agreement With Houston Rockets

A few days after the Lakers traded him and a Draft pick to Houston in exchange for Jordan Hill, Derek Fisher has reached a buyout agreement with the Rockets that’ll allow him to sign with a new team—anyone except the Lakers, per League rules—once he clears waivers. Yahoo! has the report: “Derek Fisher has reached a buyout agreement with the Houston Rockets and is expected to become a free agent once he clears waivers, league sources told Yahoo! Sports. Fisher, 37, was traded to the Rockets on Thursday with a 2012 first-round draft pick for forward Jordan Hill. Fisher became expendable after the Los Angeles Lakers acquired point guard Ramon Sessions from the Cleveland Cavaliers. Fisher will likely have a deal with a contender soon. A new rule in the collective bargaining agreement doesn’t allow him to get bought out after a trade and re-sign with the Lakers this season.”

He’s going back to the Lakers.

  • burnt_chicken

^^not much of a reader, hey?

  • Heals

^^^Common sense takes another giant step back…

  • JA Toro

    Hi there, LA Clippers!

  • http://slamonline.com Chaz

Thank you, we don’t need dirty playing Fisher here.

  • MikeC.

Clippers need some PG depth with Chauncey out for the season. Backing up Chris Paul for a few mins a game seems right.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

    Haha @ burnt.. :D

  • pyschoblab

better go to the knicks then..

  • Wet

    wolves maybe?

  • ripslam

    Just retire already.

  • PippenAin’tEasy

Is it legal for him to go to the D-Fenders THEN go to the Lakers? (Just dreamin’)

  • Riki

My money is on the Clippers or Thunder.

  • http://www.nba.com Red

I bet my whole life he joins the Seattle Sonics

  • http://slamonline.com Chaz

    He’s washed up, just leave.

    ^ dead.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Is there a reason Houston doesn’t want him?

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

    Also what about the Heat?

  • -Mas-

I think HE doesn’t want the Rockets. 1st Comment dude was funny and comment 2 funnier. I think the SPURS would pick him up in a heart beat. Just sit it out Fisher…come back next year and the good bye.

  • Jono

As much as a great guy he is, maybe it’s time to retire and start your coaching career early.

  • tomtom

    Haha well done stepfan.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

I would like to seee him back in Utah.. People always forget about the Jazz, but they are only 1 or 2 players away from contending (Not that Derek is one of those 2 guys, his experience would be a big lift)

  • kablamo

  • Startown

Bossterry: agree with you on Jazz, nice team might help win a game or two. Personally I would like the Jazz to win just enough games so that you are not in the top 14, then the Wolves get the Jazz #1 pick

  • Startown

I should have said (top 14 protected pick)

  • http://www.waihak.blogspot.com Tariq

I imagine he’ll sign with the Clippers so he can play in the same building.

  • tomtom

If NY want Phil Jackson then Fisher would be enticing prospect even if he was 3rd string and more of an assistant coach. He is one of PJs all time favourite players.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

I think he could retire at this point…?

  • Golakeshow

He could replace Jeremy Lin. It would be an upgrade for the Knicks

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

Upgrade over Lin?! Golakeshow obviously doesn’t watch any Knicks games. Fisher is going to Miami along with Turiaf. All d*ck riders are going to go to Miami…

  • Holiday

@ BossTerry Fisher is hated here in Utah for the most part, at least with most people I know around here!

  • bravo

  • Juan

He gave us 5 rings. We will miss you Fisher.

  • Juan Cervantes

It is a good idea to retire and persue other interest in your carrier. Job well done with the Lakers…..

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

How about Orlando? Don’t they need someone to spell Jameer?

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

^We’d love to have him and he’d give us some (much needed) discipline. He’s an upgrade over Chris freaking Duhon.

  • blakos

  • al

maimi pls take him, we cant have him backing up jkidd…it would be like the YMCA old dude league on drugs

  • http://yahoo L P

Fish will be missed by the Laker fans.I can not see him play for any one elase.

  • http://slamonline house

Stepfan: there is die-hard fans and die-stupid fans…..

  • IamYou

I bet scola is dissapointed.. @scola You are still the oldest in the team.

I see him headed to Miami…

  • Gregor

    GO BAK 2 LA!!!!

  • http://www.nesn.com/2012/02/kobe-bryant-says-hes-better-than-michael-jordan-second-to-wilt-chamberlain-as-best-nba-player-ever-v.html shutup

Truth is does anyone actually care? The real question is will LA retire his jersey? I doubt it.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

I think he’s put in ALOT history wise with LA but retire his jersey…… hmm thats a tough call.

  • misso

Clippers, Jazz, & Magic are going after him but as a Magic fan, I would love him here to backup Jameer & especially when were in the playoffs. Good locker room guy

  • Wasabi

Clippers have CP3, Mo Williams & Bledsoe…..All 3 are BETTER than Fisher so he definitely isn’t playing there. I say he lands with the Heat or Thunder. Would have said Spurs if it wan’t for the addition of Patty Mills.

  • http://www.nesn.com/2012/02/kobe-bryant-says-hes-better-than-michael-jordan-second-to-wilt-chamberlain-as-best-nba-player-ever-v.html shutup

Magic need some help inside, a backup center would really help, Duhon is a solid backup at point, but putting an aging slower pg on the bench doesnt seem like a good idea, unless he’s just there for team spirit.

  • billy

They haven’t retired Michael Cooper’s, or Byron Scott’s.. solid but unspectacular players..so hardly..

  • StepFANLOL

I hope D. Fisher will go to either Miami or Spurs

  • L Dribble

Ironic (in the Alanis Morrisette way) that the new rule that means he can’t go back to the Lakers was one that he was involved in negotiating as head of the players’ association.

  • Yesse

He is gonna retire or go to Miami or Los Angeles (Clippers).

  • Gregor

  • http://www.slamonline.com Dagger

Kind of disturbing to see how many people don’t read beyond the headline.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

He should probably just be like screw it, I’m done.

  • http://www.nba.com Clay

If the Spurs are retiring Bruce F@#%ing Bowen’s jersey, I think the Lakers can retire Fisher’s jersey…

  • ripslam

^The Spurs also hardly have the history that the Lakers do. If Cooper and Scott don’t get their numbers up in the rafters, I don’t think Derek Fisher should.

Fisher deserved his money. He was a coach on the floor.

  • RunNGun

Wow… lmfao at the idiots who didn’t read the article. Fisher can’t go back to the LAkers. To the Knicks… make it happen, Morey!

  • abaci

    thunder could use him

  • http://www.nba.com Red

They’re saying he wants to go to the Bulls or Heat.

  • tayriley

lol he SUCKS. the only reason he is of any value is because he was a team leader in LA. but putting him on another team that already has a team leader?? he’ll be completely useless because he is SO SLOW at point now. he’s also a dirty player. it is not “toughness” when he knocks another player down for no damn reason. it is tackiness. i’m glad rockets didn’t keep him.

  • Gregor

I tink F1sh shuld go bak 2 da Lakerrrrs!
