Dominique Wilkins Urges LeBron James to Enter the NBA Dunk Contest

Like most hoop fans, the Human Highlight Film would like to see LeBron in the Dunk Contest. But as the years fly by, James doesn’t sound like he’ll ever do it. From Fox Sports: “I’d love to see him do it,’ Wilkins said. ‘I think he would win it. I really do.’ Wilkins entered five times in an era when all the top guys regularly showed up. He won in 1985 and 1990 while starring for Atlanta. ‘Any compliment I can get from a great, especially like Dominique, is very humbling, just knowing what he meant to this league,’ James said. ‘He was an unbelievable talent, and he’s a great guy, too. I’ve had an opportunity to sit and talk to him a few times. It’s very humbling.’ But Wilkins’ praise doesn’t mean James, who bypassed the event for the ninth time in his nine NBA seasons last month in Orlando, has any newfound desire to try it. ‘I don’t know,’ James, 27, said. ‘We’ll see. I’m getting older. I’m not getting younger.’ [...] ‘I think it’s disappointing that all the great players that have athleticism don’t get in it,’ said Wilkins. ‘For whatever reason, there’s so much going on that weekend, for whatever reason guys just don’t to do it anymore … I’d like to see Josh Smith (who won in 2005 for the Hawks) get back in it.’ And, yes, Wilkins wants to see James do it just once. ‘That’s something you got want to do or you don’t want to do,’ Wilkins said. ‘I would love to see him it, but, if he chooses not to, that’s him. It doesn’t change who he is if he doesn’t do it. I did it for the fun, for the fans. I don’t think it matters if you win or lose. Just doing it and getting in it for the fans, that’s what matters. I was in it five times, and I won three.’”

    Stop it 5.

Nba Scrubs made the dunk contest into what it is today.
Nate Robinson 3 time champion killed the dunk contest.
Next dunk contest i like to see Lebron,Drose,Wall,Griffin slugging it out.
3 rounds with judges and no props.

^I’d rather see Paul George again than Griffin..

They need to just scrap the contest altogether. James is smart not to enter because all the people clamoring for him to be in it, will be the same ones bashing him for not having the greatest showing. They should just pay the streetball cats, like Kenny Dobbs, to do a dunking exhibition. No rules, no props, no judges, no scores. Just have 5 or 6 of the worlds best taking turns doing their best dunks and cut them all a check.

I really think Lebron would win too. It doesn’t matter if he’s not a creative/original dunker, his power, athleticism and star power are enough for him to give a good show and win the contest. He needs to do it.

Nique’s my guy but I thinkJames would’ve done it already at least his rookie or 2nd year if he was gonna do it. I’m just disappointed Kobe didn’t go against Vince, and Vince didn’t go against Richardson.

I’ll never forget Lebron announcing that he was going to do it and then pulling out. Bad look.

Those ‘Team Flight Brothers’ (TFB) guys are amazing. Put them in it.

  • abaci

move on. he is clearly not going to do it. why bring it up every year?

  • bike

LeBron should enter the contest and do a skit with DeShawn. Like making out like he is going to throw a lob to DeShawn and then fake it.

… what fake the shot & pass? Word to GP23 though. TFB are sicasphuk!

Baiting him to do it every year is getting old. As mentioned before get some of these Sprite participants and let them duke it out. I saw a guy on youtube in China who lobbed it to himself and did a 360 between the legs. Those are the guys we need not cupcakes and Kias and Kenny Smith’s long drawn out intros.

Save your breath Dominique- He’s scared. Afraid to fail. He cares what others think about him.

  • jake

They should let one amateur in every year. It c
Would be much more interesting. I know a few people including myself that would stand a chance.

  • Lloyd

They should have TFB and guys like that coach participants. Demar’s dunks a couple years back (one of the times he got robbed) came out of working with Justin Darlington aka Jus Fly. They were nasty!

Great gesture by Dominique. A request like that from a legend should make any superstar wanna get in the Dunk Contest. Too bad we have to face reality…lol

  • burnt_chicken

I think Jake would win hands down, Lebron or no Lebron.

  • jake

Lol not saying I would win but as a 6 foot 2 white guy who can honey dip, I think it would excite people to see average joes facing off against all stars.

Damn u and your honey dip jake!

  • jake

Baha,God messed up and gave me the jump gene.

    1 name. KENNY DOBBS

  • robb

Nique saying he won 3 times is hilarious. He still thinks he defeated MJ in ’88

  • Dingo Rob

I have no desire to see him dunk without defenders trying to catch or get in front of him.

  • Dingo Rob

@DFrance I like that idea…these idea maybe not – how about a dunk comp where the ring gets higher and higher, the winner the one who dunk the highest, the record remains until broken over the years. Either that or somehow measure dunk power, best power dunk with style and strength.

  • barnabusb

How about a dunk contest where guys come out and jump really high and dunk really hard? Leave the gimmicks at home. Leave the props at home. Leave the crowd-baiting antics at home. Just go up, do a double-pump reverse, and kill it. That’s what the crowd wants to see. It doesn’t matter if the dunk has been done before as long as you do with it authority and add your own little leg kick to it or something. It’s not rocket science.
