Grizzlies GM: Gilbert Arenas Signing Unlike Allen Iverson Signing

When the Memphis Grizzlies signed Gilbert Arenas, many Allen Iverson-related jokes were cracked. But GM Chris Wallace refuses to compare this situation to the 2009 Iverson disaster in Memphis. From the Commercial Appeal: “Gilbert was never the rock star that Allen was. Gilbert is in better physical condition than Allen was. Allen hadn’t done anything all summer,’ Wallace said, adding that: ‘Gilbert desperately wants to get back in the NBA. He’s a legit card-caring basketball junkie. He’s only 30 years old. He feels he’s got some years left in him. He doesn’t have an issue coming off the bench. I don’t think they’re comparable situations.’ Read: Gilbert is ‘desperate.’ I can tell you that Iverson was delusional. He lied to the Griz about being OK with coming off the bench. Then Iverson was a flat-out cancer after he arrived. He totally disrespected his teammates and then quit. Arenas has never been painted as a bad guy before the gun incident with the Washington Wizards. That was Arenas being stupid. He’s generally viewed as a bit goofy and eccentric but not a thug. Plus, Iverson was team owner Michael Heisley’s idea and his alone. None of the Grizzlies’ basketball people wanted Iverson. That was also the case with Jason Williams last year, and he quit. This Arenas deal is all on Wallace, and it’s a relatively risk-free proposition.”

    I think he meant “card-carrying”

Someone needs to remind Gilbert not to bring guns to the Arenas of the NBA.

Best of luck to Gil, but why bother throwing dirt on Iverson? Any casual NBA fan would have told you Iverson was NOT going to be ok coming off the bench & would have little respect for a rookie coach. Wallace should have been able to convince ownership of that…

I’m actually happy to see someone give Hibachi another chance. I hope he comes back and proves people wrong.

Iverson screwed up the situation himself but he would’ve taken Conley’s starting job within a few weeks. It’s too bad he overreacted. A.I. had some nice games off the bench for Memphis. The breaking point was when he came off the bench for Conley and lit it up giving them the lead and then Hollins benched him so Conley could play the last two minutes (which honestly he blew). He’s fine with a bench role now and he could definitely help a contender but this scared all the teams away.

The big shame is that Iverson has a worse reputation than people who are constantly getting arrested, brawling on the court, etc. He’s also far from the first guy to get upset about being benched. He just got singled out for it because of his image. A lot of “class acts” have whined too.

Its pretty funny that he said Arenas wasn’t much of a ‘rock star’, i would be nearly certain that when Arenas was writing on NBA.COM he had a whole post devoted to someone calling him ‘The biggest rockstar in the NBA’, it was quite funny if i remember. Anyway, i wish him the best, he was awesome pre-injury, lighting up Kobe at staples.

What do u mean Gilbert isn’t a hall of famer. LET me tell u this, Arenas isn’t a thug AI is, Gil doesn’t disrespect his team mates AI does, arenas has some game left, AI’s game IS DEAD, and in 2006 their was a time that one game gil scored 40, next game 45, next 41, had a few more game with regular stats, THEN SCORED 60 AGAINST THE LAKERS, ARENAS IS A HALL OF FAMER, he freakin lead a team with no playoff experience since 1998, to the 2nd round of the playoffs in 2005, made a game winner against chicago also in that series, before getting swept by the heat, then lead them to the playoffs at 2006, 2007, and 2008. Yes i understand AI took his team to the finals, but listen gil had more heart, gil was AT THE GYM MORE, PRACTICED MORE, and WAS JUST A LEADER TO HIS TEAM,
