JaVale McGee Unhappy With Benchings

JaVale McGee committed a horrendous foul against the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday night, which resulted in him getting benched for large portions of the game. Following yet another Wizards loss last night, McGee explained his frustration with head coach Randy Wittman’s playing time decisions. From the WaPo: “After he bit on a pump fake, left his feet and fouled Milwaukee center Drew Gooden on a three-pointer with one second left in the first half on Tuesday, JaVale McGee had to wait nearly 29 minutes of game action before he got the chance to play again for the Wizards. Coach Randy Wittman reacted to McGee’s silly foul in Milwaukee by placing his hands upon his head and gritting his teeth. Then he decided to let McGee and the rest of his teammates know that the Wizards needed to do more than play; they need to play with a purpose. And certain actions weren’t going to be tolerated. He benched McGee for the rest of the second half, then put Kevin Seraphin in at starting center against the Orlando Magic. McGee scored nine points and grabbed six rebounds in a season-low 16 minutes in the Wizards’ 102-95 loss on Wednesday. But McGee still doesn’t know what he is supposed to learn from this experience yet. ‘I can’t say I do, but I’m sure I’ll figure it out sooner or later,’ McGee said after the game. […] McGee couldn’t hide his disgust when he wasn’t allowed to battle Magic center Dwight Howard down the stretch. ‘I would like to have a chance to be on the floor, but I wasn’t, so I had to make what was given to me,’ McGee said. ‘Just frustrations with losing and just not being able to play. It wasn’t anything that serious.’ McGee makes spectacular plays and is having a career season, but his defensive lapses also frustrated Wittman’s predecessor, Flip Saunders. With his athletic gifts, McGee can sometimes mask his errors on defense by recovering for blocked shots, but Wittman has talked about accountability ever since taking over. Wittman said he spoke with McGee and Nick Young, who also was benched, after the game. He explained that he had to reward Seraphin and Jordan Crawford for how they performed in helping the Wizards come back from a 22-point deficit and nearly pulling out a win in Milwaukee. When asked what they discussed specifically, McGee said, ‘That’s between me and him.’”

Mark my words. Javale will surprise you all one day soon. Nick too.

  • james

hey i mcgee is a decent center i love his highlights and yes his defense does to some polishing but overall hes young and is very athletic and maybe the coach is using him as a scapegoat because he already knows he’s gonna lose and by putting starters on the bench for “disciplinary purposes” makes it look like its their fault they lost also that team has no leader wall is no rose that whole team is nothing but thugs and punks

He will finally learn what Basketball I.Q. means?

‘I can’t say I do, but I’m sure I’ll figure it out sooner or later,’ win!

james is secretly McGee… or he doesn’t proofread.

The only surprise from me on either of those two would be if they both bombed terribly for the rest of their careers. I expect both of them to be good solid pieces on playoff teams someday.

I think Javale is actually one of the most entertaining guys the league to watch — both in good and bad ways. It’s like he lives in an alternate cartoon universe – like you expect a laugh track to follow him around, or the laws of physics to not apply. Kinda like Nate Rob. Now THAT would be a cartoon – the Nate Rob and Javale team-up on saturday morning!

If James was McGee, I’d expect his comment to be in wingdings.

    javale needs to grow up

Discipline and direction Is what the doc ordered for the Whiz. Shut your mouth and listen to your coach Javale.

I don’t know man, I watch a lot of Wiz games being in the Baltimore area and a lot of times, Javale is the only dude out on the court playing hard. Yes he makes some bonehead plays, but he does what is asked of him with 0 plays called for him. A lot of times they will go 5-6 possesions without him touching the ball. Not saying he should touch it everytime down, but if you’ve played you know how discouraging it can be to be playing all out on defense and guys won’t pass you the rock. Anyway, long story short, I think he gets a bad wrap and will flourish given the right situation.

I’m from the DMV too and what I see is JaVale not passing the ball back to his point guard after missing a basket and rebounding. I see him pouting like a little kid after a bad shot attempt. I don’t see him in the weight room and putting time on that hook (maybe he is because it does look better than last years). He doesn’t do the one on one dribble thing anymore. He just needs to be more patient on both O and D. Hopefully learn to box out and get bigger in the weightroom. But that is just a wish list.

  • bike

The foul was epically stupid. Stupid is, stupid does.

  • tb

I have no idea what goes on in his head sometimes. That’s including Nick

  • reflections

the Wizards need to get some good veterans on that team before it’s too late!! Get like any older center and point guard to back up McGee and Wall

  • T-Money

if an organization like the spurs could get their hands on mcgee. oh my…

Fire Flip and get rid of Blatche.

    They did and they’re trying.

  • robb

Which NBA player are you? Jessica Simpson is JaVale McGee

  • http://slamonline.com The Philosopher

All that those young guys need is a coach.
    Wittman is not the guy.

  • Rainman

    LOL @ rob.

  • bike

    Angelina Jolie is Birdman.

  • burnt_chicken

I’ll take that, if it’s a bet, AllenP. I’ll give you three years.

  • MikeC.

Somebody get Kurt Thomas on the Wiz. That’ll fix the immaturity issues. One way or another.

  • blakos

I am becoming less enamoured with this guy everyday. Let him go to the Warriors. Tank the season. Pick up Anthony Davis in next years draft………..

  • ripslam

Man, the Wizards roster is full of guys who could be stars if they had their head on straight. McGee is the worst defensive shot-blocker I’ve ever seen, if that makes any sense. I mean, it shouldn’t.

  • Just Sayin

@JTaylor they fired Flip a while back. Whitman has not done anything to earn the respect of fans atleast Flip was a veteran in this league.

  • http://slamonline.com J

i like this players potential actually.
Javale+some d-leaguer+ cash for Jamison+sessions+2nd round pick in whatever draft. Is that possible? Or would the Wiz take that? If that happens the Cavs would have a great core to build around. Byron Scott can shape javale trust me.

    Shaq is Big Momma.

    Robb is Susan Boyle.
