Kevin Garnett: Trade Rumors Motivating Rajon Rondo

by Marcel Mutoni @marcel_mutoni

Amid on-again, off-again trade rumors, Rajon Rondo put up monster numbers against the visiting New York Knicks yesterday in the Boston Celtics’ overtime win.

Rondo’s silly line — which was Wilt Chamberlain-esque — of 18 points, 20 assists and 17 rebounds (a career high) ignited the Celtics, and according to teammate Kevin Garnett, Rajon is using the trade talk as a motivating factor.

From the Boston Herald:

“Rondo’s line is one that I haven’t seen since I’ve been in the league,” said Garnett, a 17-year veteran. “Very, very impressive. I had to come in here and give him some real (praise) after that. I saved the (box score). Just as a witness that I was here and I actually got to see this up front and center.” According to Garnett, the performance wasn’t a total surprise. A nationally televised matchup with much-hyped Knicks point guard Jeremy Lin amid the swirling trade rumors is a recipe for a monster game from Rondo, who has 17 career triple-doubles.

“The thing about Lin is I think everybody who’s at the point guard position is going to be excited to play the kid,” Garnett said. “(Rondo) was nothing short of that today. I could see it. I could tell. I’ve been around him to know when he’s motivated and when he’s more than motivated. Tonight was one of those nights.” Surely, [Danny] Ainge would love to borrow Garnett’s superpower. As Ainge charts the franchise’s future he must determine whether to keep the uniquely talented Rondo as the centerpiece or trade him for a more stable presence. “The trade talks really is a good motivating factor for him,” Garnett said. “If you know Rondo, he’s an I’ll-show-you type of person.”

Paul Pierce has tried to comfort his point guard by telling him that he also been the subject of trade chatter for a number of years in the past, and that you can’t let that affect your play negatively.

To his credit, Rajon Rondo has taken the incessant trade rumors in stride — publicly anyway — choosing to let his play on the court do the talking for him.

It;s already been pointed out but Lin might as well have a crosshair tattooed on his forehead.

  • http://www.slamonline.com spit hot fiyah

if this is the result, they should flood the media with rumors

  • RunNGun

    Garnett is getting traded too.

The Celtics are finished this season. That’s right Boston, get ready to pour out some liquour. Your run is over…just like it is over for the Patsies.

Rondo can be an A-Hole, but what superstar isn’t aside from D-Rose?? Gotta take the bad with the good, and with that stat line, THE GOOD OUTWEIGHS THE BAD FOR SURE!

  • Drey

    @KHOLIDAY: Durant?

  • http://www.fullc0urtpress.com KHOLIDAY

@Drey, Durant isn’t an A-Hole in the media, but who knows about the locker room. He and Westbrook seem to get into it all the time! I’d agree with you tho to an extent… you can say Durant and D-Rose are low maintenance superstars.

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/tray24 T-Ray

Na I think Durant is a douche but he keeps it low key for the most part. DRose can be stand offish but he seems like a chill dude. But on another note…momma here come that man! Rondo is a freak for that stat line!

  • http://slamonline.com The Philosopher

Lin is not a point guard…
It is becoming more apparent with each passing game.
    In my opinion.

  • Rik Smits Mullet

drose is probably an a-hole in real life as well. this dude smiles twice a year when he is on the job. Digusted by dancing while on the annual fun work bbq. Looks like an A-hole to me lol. Our just a bitter/sour dude from work.
I have to make a case for durant because he might be the only none A-hole superstar.

rondo is the best pure point guard in the league if he didnt miss so many of the layups he normally makes he could almost go for a double triple double(i dont even how you name it lol). i cant even do that stuff on nba 2k12

  • http://slamonline.com The Philosopher

Rondo is the best pure point guard since Jason Kidd.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    Chris Paul.

  • bull22

rondo should not need any motivation.. just play hard and continue to lead your team period. better attitude and being more fan and media friendly would be a great start.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Philo, Lin really isn’t a PG in terms of how he plays because he’s new to the position. He’s going to become a good PG though, he’s got the instincts. It’s not like watching RW where you question whether or not he’ll grasp the concept of the position

  • http://slamonline.com The Philosopher

    Maybe you’re right…

  • Rik Smits Mullet

Rondo secretly got more fans then most people know. Based on his jersey being the third most popular last season. And its not like he switched teams. for instance iam a Lebron James fan and a celtics hater since the larry bird days but Rondo is my second favorite player. i dont give a crap about fan or media friendliness. Just his vast array of obscure passes right in the shot pocket area and his layup skills make him a fan favorite to a lot of people.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

maybe i’m not tho lol – I just think he has a better foundation as a PG then many other guys we have watched and said “that dude is playing out of position”

  • http://slamonline.com The Philosopher

    I don’t know.
It just seems like, to me, that Lin and the Knicks would be better served if he were allowed to play more to his strengths.
    Scoring the ball.
Getting open looks. Receiving more kick – outs so he can improvise a little more.
Utilizing more of a two man game.
Playing with his instincts, instead of having to think too much.
I definitely can be wrong too, though.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

You are probably right in the short run (if New York could have Baron Davis set up the offense and not die of accelerated heart beat, or over exposure to motion). But Lin can’t really be a long term off-the-ball option unless you have a PG who can defend a wing position (like a Jason Kidd) – might as well have him develop at the only position where he is a long term option while the whole city is impervious to turning on him….for however long that lasts….

  • http://www.fullc0urtpress.com KHOLIDAY

@RikSmitsMullet, D-Rose might be an a-hole in real life, but basketball wise, I think he just takes the game seriously! Yes, too seriously at times, but you cant fault him for that because he gets the job done! Have fun on your own time lol. I agree with the Durant notion to an extent. I think he’s a good guy.

  • Rik Smits Mullet

i never said rose is a bad bball player. Certainly top 5 in the nba. But he looks to me like he might be an a-hole off the court. Some people people call it humble but it looks more sour and bitter to me. This allstar game make me look at rose in a different way. Telling the press he doesnt enjoy an allstar game and saying the asg isnt a venue for the latest dance moves and a smile while being introduced makes me dislike him even more. I just want to say to drose just smile sometimes and enjoy the asg atleast for your fans. It doesnt make him a better bball player but it atleast makes it look like the guy enjoys his life.

  • BoWeezy24

    Haha. I Agree ^

  • Heals

If they’re finished what does that make the team they just beat smart-a$$. Your ucking Knicks can’t even beat a C’s team on it’s last legs and you think they’re gonna compete with Mia and Chi over the next 5 years, totally delusional…

  • http://www.fullc0urtpress.com KHOLIDAY

@Rik, I’m not talking basketball talent when I speak of Rose and his demeanor. I’m just saying in terms of him being disruptive to his team he isn’t. You never hear of him arguing with teammates or being what some would describe as a cancer in any way shape or form. As far as the all star thing, I didnt like his stance on that either, but doesnt surprise me coming from him. He seems like the type that only wants to compete. If you put some stakes on the game (like home court advantage during the finals), he’d change his tone about playing. In regards to dancing during intros, he prolly cant dance! You see how he contorts going to the basket? Would you really wanna see him dougie?

@IAMORANGE4EVER, wow you must really have something against the Celtics….OH WAIT 17 TITLES!!!!

  • Clos1881

@bull22 what does being fan and media friendly have to do with basketball? All rondo has to do is continue to do what has done over his career and that cause havoc and be everywhere on the court.

  • Rik Smits Mullet

i agree with you completly. Rose is in no way disruptive or a cancer in the locker room. Though i didnt like the small jab he took this year by saying he liked a trade for pau gasol. Which would have led to a trade for some of his team mates. But i digress. his profesional stance is something to be admired. But a little enjoyment in your profession could even be productive. He doesnt have to dance. Which would probably look like he is having multiple seizures lol. But a smile after a great play would make him look more human. Also the asg mvp could count as a stake right.
But all this hasnt have anything to do with his bball skills and he would be just as great of a player. It only makes a case for him being an sour a-hole which doesnt effect anything while he does his job.

  • http://cechicagorilla@aol.com yada

wth are yall talking about? u saying d.rose is an ahole btw he looks? or because he isnt loud or colorful to the public? geez ppl are insecure. then u throwout the fake pau gasol rumors by a spain newspaper? i really dont understand the mind of some ppl

  • http://bigleaguewiffleball.com/ Jon L.

Rondo had an awesome game yesterday, but I can’t see why Ainge is shopping Rondo. He is the best player on the team right now and this team cannot afford to lose him.

  • bull22

@ricksmitsmullet, no doubt rondo is a great player but a bad attitude can affect how the franchise and fans feel about you otherwise there would be no trade talk.
@clos1881 without the fans and the media, rondo would just be another cat playing pickup basketball like the rest of us normal folk.

  • Rik Smits Mullet

iam having a discusion with kholiday he said at 11:24 that all superstar are a-holes except for drose. My opinion is that probably drose is an a-hole aswell. I stated a few facts which are based on my limited and probably biased impression from games i watch and stuff i read on the internet(which can be very wrong as you point out) I made up my own opnion of drose and was trying to use this in this very offtopic disscusion. I think drose has as a personality like a cardboard box and is probably a a-hole. But you dont have to agree with me. And yes i like to see people enjoy themselves once in a while when they do something great. His less colorfulness (as you put it)made me form this opinion. I dont know why does this make me or anybody with this opinion insecure.

  • What

Why does everybody think rondos got a bad attitude? Theres nothing wrong with a leader being a knowitall.

  • trueballer4life

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com albie1kenobi

my impression of Rondo being a diva: he arrived at the arena in a NASCAR stock car in game 1 of the 2009 playoff (i believe).

  • Shem

This is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. Whether it’s true or not, if you need trade rumors to motivate you to play to your full potential then you’re in the wrong profession.

  • hushabomb

Rose may be an A-hole yet he’s paid very well to be on the court. I think he gets it when he’s paid to win as many games as possible. He doesn’t want to dance around and do all the fancy stuff. His main purpose is to win. You can’t fault a player for that. If he’s a fighter, he would be Bruce Lee. Total dedication to his craft!!!

  • http://www.wfp.org Felix

waaaaaaaait!?!? why would you ever trade Rondo? The guys that are arguably better than him at his position (which is like two or three dudes in the world) aren’t gonna be on the block… and when he becomes a dangerous shooter (he will…trust me) over the next couple of years? Rondo seems too good to trade… Then again somebody traded Wilt, Kareem, Shaq, etc. so I guess anyone could be tradeable…

  • Ldub

Rondo is top 5 PG in the L. What you could get in return could push your team over the hump. With KG, Ray and PP past their primes, it would make sense to get what you can as part of the rebuilding stage. Rondo has admitted (according to “sources”) that he doesnt want to be apart of the rebuilding stage, as he hates losing. So it could ultimately benefite him in the long run. He goes to a team such as Lakers/Orlando where he can be one of the stars and still put up #’s like hes doing for the C’s. I guess it boils down to what you would get in return. Rondo for Gasol? KG gets shipped somewhere? Too many possibilities. 2 more weeks before trade deadline? Someone from the C’s is gonna get the timberland!

he should do what Shaq did to Buss when he was with the lakers and say “PAY ME” to danny ainge after his next triple dub

  • John B

    Rondo to the Lakers
