Kyrie Irving Not Playing for Australia at the 2012 Olympics

There was talk earlier this season that Kyrie Irving might suit up for Australia — the country he was born in — at the upcoming Summer Games in London, but the Cavs’ rookie sensation has elected to hold out for a Team USA spot at the 2016 Games instead. From the Akron Beacon Journal: “Kyrie Irving said Monday night he will not play for Australia in the Olympics this summer, but will stay with Team USA in hopes of making the Americans’ Olympic team in 2016. Irving received confirmation that his college coach, Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski, would be back to coach the Americans in four more years. That was enough to convince him to stay. ‘It was the right decision,’ Irving said. ‘I found out Coach K would be coaching in 2016. It made my decision so much easier to play for my coach again. That was the deciding factor.’ Irving could have faced battle just to get cleared by FIBA if he wanted to play for Australia, since he already represented the Americans in junior competition. Now he’ll stay on with the U.S. Select Team and would appear to be a strong candidate to make the Olympic team in four years.”

    worth the risk for sure,
shout out to shane heal, who remembers when he murdered the US in the pre olympic games ’96

Kyrie, patty mills, Andrew bogut, Nathan jawai, David Andersen… Meh, we’d still get smashed.

Irving was never going to play with the Boomers. Kyrie may have been born in Melbourne, but c’mon, he’s no Aussie. I’d rather have players representing our country who have no question about which nation they want to play for. Not someone who sees Australia as a back door to the olympics.

He won’t make it is he crazy?!

  • bike

Is that where he got his hops from?

Red based on what he has shown this season there is no reason why he wouldn’t give himself a good chance of making it, he should be up there as one of the top point guard in 3 to 4 years.

Australia still have – Bogut, Jawai, Mills, Andersen, Worthington, Ingels, Newley, Nielsen, Gibson, Maric, Dellavedova, Ogilvy, Martin, Majok, Lisch, Redhage, Khazzouh etc etc. I’m sure we will be fine.
Irving, whilst born in Australia, is not Australian anyway. He’s never stepped foot back on Australian soil since he was 2 years old. I’d prefer the spot go to an actual Australian.
Irving uses the “Aussie” tag for a cool factor. Pure poser.

Big-Ups to Kyrie for his willingness to take on the challenge of competing with Rose, Russbrook, Deron, and CP3 for right to be Team USA PG. I thought he’d just go star for the Aussies and be content competing for silver.

Kyrie could have played for Australia at the London Olympics then after 3 years be eligible to play for Team USA.

The ozzies are actually hoping he will play for them. Come on we all know he will play for the US only no matter what.

Goodluck to the young man, you got some players in front of you right now but who knows, as they get older a couple might not wanna play for teams USA anymore.

  • Willlkh

Why he souda like he’s in USA roster for sure?

  • Bigblue

whatever he isint a aussie anyway, be better if someone who is actually proud to be from this country takes his place. no doubt he would have been the star on the team though.

@Dave as far as I know, FIBA rules will not let anybody play for a different national team if they have already done so previously with another country.

FIBA rules does not allow anyone to play for more than one national team. I mean, they make an exception if the country/state you repped before dissolved (ie. the former Yugoslavia) but generally you can’t.
