Mike Woodson Introduced as Knicks Interim Coach

by Yaron Weitzman / @YaronWeitzman

NEW YORK —The New York Knicks held a pre-game press conference tonight to introduce Mike Woodson as the their new interim head coach. Woodson will replace Mike D’Antoni, who resigned from the position earlier today.

Woodson was introduced by Knicks owner James Dolan, who spoke for three minutes before leaving without taking any questions, and senior vice president for basketball operations Glen Grunwald.

“He (D’Antoni) clearly felt that it was best for the organization if he were not to continue to coach the team,” Dolan said. “He did offer to stay, but after a long discussion, agreed that it was best for the team to have a new voice going forward.”

Dolan also stressed that Woodson will be reevaluated at the end of the season.

Grunwald, who took took questions from the media with Woodson after Dolan left, said he was “surprised” when D’Antoni came to him after this morning’s team shootaround and informed him that he would be resigning. Grunwald was also hesitant to pin the resignation on D’Antoni’s reportedly deteriorating relationship with Carmelo Anthony.

“It wasn’t just Carmelo,” Grunwald said. “Our whole team was not playing up to the way we thought they could. I know Mike was as frustrated as anyone with that.”

Grunwald also acknowledged that the Knicks’ constantly changing roster did not make D’Antoni’s job any easier, and described D’Antoni’s decision to resign as selfless.

Woodson was very complementary and respectful towards D’Antoni, and thanked him for giving him a job this season. He did, however, say that he would eventually make a few tactical changes.

“I’ll make changes as we go along,” Woodson said. When asked what specific ones he had in mind, Woodson mentioned giving both Anthony and Amar’e Stoudemire more touches in the post.

This is just the NBA. Someone has to be accountable and D’antoni was the easiest to push out. Owners and GM’s just dont give a shit about building anything they just want a get rich quick scheme of some sort. Most of em are morons and should really let teams play with each other long enough to build chemistry. It takes years for this ish not one short season with no team pre season. The NBA is starting to suck…what a lame melodrama.

Is it just me or is D’Antoni overrated? His style worked in PHX with Nash like last decade, but he has been a disaster elsewhere. NYK need to work on defence (I’m Australian, that’s how we spell it). Not just Melo, STAT or Lin, but all of them, team wise, ala Thidobeau. Hopefully Woodson can have a solid crack at one of the worlds most scrutinized job… Good luck.
On a side note, Thidobeau for COY?

  • TOMGUGLIOTA

@Dukefromdeep lost in all the Carmelo bashing is the fact that D’antoni has tried to force feed his style on a team that is not built for that style, as style that has not proved to beat good teams in seven game series…as much of a nice guy D’antoni is his style has been thoroughly exposed.

As much as I wanna say, “Oh man, now it’s ON! Knicks are gonna bring it!” I can’t. Yea, we played dope defense on a team whose chemistry is WAY worse than ours. Not to mention we were raining 3′s like crazy, but the team knew how important the first game when a coach quits is. If we can sustain this intensity for at least 5 games or more – against playoff teams – then i’ll start believing they actually respect Woodson and want to do right by son and give him they all. But until that happens, we just beat a weak ass team who quit on they own coach.

@O –They just beat a team with a record better than theirs. The biggest problem in NY is the B.S. media, who do just that, they overdo it criticizing everything. Sometimes it feels like the NY papers are the tabloid rags. Big respect from everyone from Isiah to Steph to D’antoni to Melo, before them and after them. NY sucks to play in, you always have a bulls eye on your back rather than just having your back.
