Mike Woodson: New York Knicks ‘Have a Legitimate Shot to Win the Title’

Woodsanity has taken over New York (ok, not really), but with the Knicks playing some of their best ball this season, new head coach Mike Woodson thinks the squad can win it all. (Oy.) Per a wide-ranging Q&A with the NY Post: “Q: Message to Knick fans. A: ‘To be patient with us, stay behind us. Stay behind and be positive and help us push this thing through. Because it’s a total team effort, man. Yeah, you win a title, not for yourselves, but for me, it would be great to bring a title here to New York, man. I think if that ever happened, man, it would be the most unbelievable experience. ’Cause you got Manhattan, all the surrounding boroughs, man, that would just go bananas if you win one. That’s all I think about. I don’t think about anything else. Q: If you make the playoffs, what qualities do you want this team to have when the playoffs begin? A: ‘They have a legitimate shot to win the title. When the playoffs come around, it’s open season. Who’s playing the hardest, the best … who believes that they can really get it done. Homecourt and all that goes out the door. It’s great to have homecourt, but hey, we (2004 Pistons) didn’t have it in the Eastern Conference Final that year, and we ended up beating the Pacers. We didn’t have it in the Finals that year, and we beat the Lakers …and if these guys are honest with themselves, and hold each other accountable, their credibility is rollin’ high, man, anything can happen in a playoff series. Anything.’”

LOL! this not the NFL coach woodson. the last 16 straight champions were a TOP 4 team in their conference. only the 1995 rockets won the title with a lower seed then 4. not a chance this team wins a title this year unless earth freezes over.

  • Rik Smits Mullet

they can still win the title of most dysfunctional big three.

  • MirChilly

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha…. Funny part is they actually have a shot to get out of the east If my Bulls don’t get Rose healthy and Wade can’t win every game in the fourth for Miami and the sixers don’t have a go-to scorer (should’ve got Monta). So it is possible for a title run to the finals atleast… But still funny!!!!!!!!!! hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

  • http://nba.com GP23

The Knicks need to get that 6th seed… anything less (7th or 8th) they’re getting swept and going home.

  • 130623

He has to say this, but I think there’s more chance the new York liberty win the Nba title this year

  • dazzy

What else is he supposed to say, haters?

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

I like how bull22 still uses the “MirChilly” Name tag.. lol. What a dork.

  • MirChilly

Hey @LakeShow ask yourself this question, How many times have you seen the name MirChilly tag on this website? So kind sir, please relax with your rampant cornballness

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

I am no Mike Moodson but I think that Amare is in the running for Defensive Player of the Year.

  • Aizen

I like this statement by Woodson, ’cause it gives the players something to look forward to.

Besides, I doubt anyone here thought the 2x champion Lakers would get swept by an old Mavs team last year.

  • l2ising Phoenix

It’s realistic…..you want woodson to say “championship ? Nahhhhh, a second round outing would be ideal” haters gon hate. Go Knicks!

  • ratguts

They throw him in as interim head coach and he’s out there doing standup? Gotta love it. He’ll shave his eyebrows off during the next game.

  • Ash

NY is a scary team if they can play D..they can go far…good bench and starting 5

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

Well on the contrary, if the starting line up of every contending team gets injured just in time for the playoffs, then yea, there’s a shot…

  • l2ising Phoenix

    That’s what see said.

he sure says “man” a lot

Trivia question: Has there ever been a black coach who took over a team from a fired white coach that won an NBA championship in the same season?

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Why is it that anytime the Knicks go on a nice little run (like damn near every decent team in the NBA from time to time), everyone starts predicting championships?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

if Mr Chilly isn’t Bull22 they are related.
And why do the Knicks coaches prefer to be unrealistic?
We just beat the Raptors! We can win the title!
    Are you f*ckin kidding me.
You won 4 whole games in a row, 2 against non-playoff teams. And you are still under .500
Say something like, “this team can compete for the 6th seed, and even homecourt next season”
    - It’s called having realistic expectations.

hahahahahaha let’s hope u get out the first round fellas

  • dazzy

I’m sure he’s well aware of what the NY media and fan base would like to hear, regardless of what he’s saying to his team behind closed doors. But wait, the online coaches of Slam know everything. They can even read NBA coachs’ minds.

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

I’m gonna laugh if (when?) the Bucks make the playoffs over the Knicks.

  • Waggle

Funny. I was thinking the same thing about the Suns.

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/tray24 T-Ray

The Knicks and their fans are unrealistic. Four in a row good job plenty of teams have done it. With that talent they should be doing that and even more games. It’s nice to have high hopes but at least be honest with yourself.

  • bull22

nah nbk and lakeshow i dont diguise myself as multiple users, that crap is for children, nor do i know who mr chilly is. what i wrote is a true statement that you can’t refute, so yeah you can relate me to true facts

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

nobody is refuting your statement genius. You and that person comment just like one another. plain and simple.

  • @boweezy24

I Believe The Knicks Got a Shot In The Play Offs. They’ll Win it All!!!!

  • Just Sayin

People are making fun but i think the Knicks can pull an upset in the first round. If they go up against the Bulls and Heat and match their defensive intensity(most likely not gonna happen) and Lin doesn’t get too many turnovers I think they can give the Bulls/Heat a fight. They don’t lack the offensive firepower to do it. Lol where is Iamorange?

  • Justin G.

JTaylor, who outside of Woodson and iamorange are predicting the Knicks will win? They can score the ball but their problem lies on D, as everyone knows. They can’t stop anybody, at least not the elite teams and that will be their downfall

  • MirChilly

I would love to know what makes us similar??? But anyway… Mike Woodson comments comments while idiotic hold some truth. They have the paint clogging center (Tyson) scorers (Amare, Melo) Playmakers (baron, lin) off the bench scorer (J.R) shooters and defensive role players (Iman, Novak, Jefferies, fields) needed to win a title. But I believe my bulls have what it takes (If Rose and Hamilton is healthy)

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com albie1kenobi

if they can keep up their defensive intensity (as exhibited during their win streaks), then it’s a remote possibility. but the starters do not have “defense” wired into their game or mentality, so as soon as something goes wrong, instead of dialing up the defense as any successful team would do to get back in the game, they just slump and give up playing D.
no one should argue they have enough talents to win it all on paper (seriously talent-wise they are top 5 in the league), but the game is not played on paper.

  • bull22

@mirchilly its nbk and lakeshow’s nonsense, its as old as dirt. nbk is a bandwagon fan who makes his predictions as they happen. lakeshow is the ultimate moronic laker fan who just loves to accuse people of crap he is probably doing. welcome to the jungle mirchilly and dont let those two losers
get on your nerves. they are nothing but a bag of wind.

@nbk, glad to see you still follow me around my little mini-twitter son
where i appear you appear. ready for your fruit-rollups son?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

you are really bad at this. i mean, i would jab back at you if i didn’t feel like i was talking to someone with a mental handicap.
Chilly, we were referring to you being a bulls fan (who doesn’t seem to have a very firm grasp on reality, like saying the Knicks have a chance to make it out the East, which is asburd) and typing hahahah a thousand times. It’s right in bull’s wheelhouse.

  • http://SLAMONLINE.COM Gab

Lets face it realistically they don’t have a chance to win title. But then again he’s supposed to motivate his players. And in NYC anything can happen.

  • http://slamonline.com 1982

People misuse the word hater a lot on here. It’s not hating if it’s true. If I said your sister’s fat and ugly, and she really was fat and ugly, calling me a hater would be the wrong word. Saying Mike Woodson wants to motivate his team is fine, but if you’re saying anyone that disagrees that the Knicks can win this year is just hating then your sister is fat and ugly.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Hating would be saying “I don’t understand how his fat and ugly sister got a man. Dude could do better.”

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

someone just called steve novak a defensive player… wow..

  • http://www.nba.com Red

What’s wrong with the water in New York, somebody find out!

  • Sparker

oddly, on paper, they just might have the talent… but definitely not the coach

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com albie1kenobi

@megatron: novak is not a defensive player on his own, but the 2nd unit is very pesky and plays all out on the defense (unlike the first unit), and he contributes by rotating and hustling. (remember d’antoni said the 2nd unit beat the 1st unit often during practice?)
the Mavs was a great defensive TEAM during their playoff run last year, even though dirk is not a good defensive player. not that i’m comparing Novak to Dirk, but it’s to illustrate the point that just because someone is not a good individual defensive player doesn’t mean he can’t be a good TEAM defensive player.

    K.C. Jones.
I THINK Bill Fitch was fired. Not completely sure.

    Weird sht going on here

  • http://www.starting5.com.au NM30

    Hey mike Woodson
    U r a dreamer
    That is all

  • Bosss

New york knicks would beat the bulls only since chicago is a one man team and playoffs is about matchups miami would
Mash them up looool easiser then the bulls

  • Marc

So you guys want him to say “We have no chance at all” Would you consider that a good coach? He is suppose to think and say that. If you was the coach you would say it too. So chill out.

    PS. They have no chance.

  • crooklyn

NY – sky’s the limit. I really gotta laugh at all these clowns who give coaches or players a hard time about shooting for a title. None of you clowns could pick a weeks’ worth of wins, especially this season. Let the chip fall where it may

  • Paul H

The fact that Bull 22′s first comment ended with “Earth freezes over”, then 13 mins later a guy called “Mr Chilly comes on sounding exactly the way he always does, leads me to believe they are one and the same.

  • Omar

The Knicks would give the Bulls fits in a series.
