Report: Grizzlies to Sign Gilbert Arenas

After working out for the Grizz this morning, free agent guard Gilbert Arenas impressed team executives and is close to signing a deal for the rest of the season. The Commercial Appeal has the details: “Arenas appeared slender and shot the ball well during the workout. He is scheduled to take a physical this afternoon. All that would remain is for Arenas to pass the physical and agree to a prorated veteran’s minimum contract requiring the Griz to pay about $300,000. The deal, if completed in the next day or two, would allow Arenas to join the Grizzlies later this week in Portland. The Griz begin a four-game West Coast trip tomorrow at Sacramento. Arenas, 30, has been unemployed since finishing last season with the Orlando Magic. He worked out for the Los Angeles Lakers earlier this season but they declined to make him an offer. Even though Arenas averaged a career-worst 10.8 points a game and shot 36.6-percent in 2010-11 while playing for the Magic and Washington Wizards, the Griz are willing to give him a look because rookies Jeremy Pargo and Josh Selby haven’t inspired confidence as understudies for starting point guard Mike Conley. The hope is that a 6-4 Arenas would provide quality backcourt depth. He is a three-time All-Star who averaged 21.2 points and 5.4 assists 10 NBA seasons.”

Allen Iverson: “God chose Memphis as the place that I will continue my career,” and that “I feel that they are committed to developing a winner.”

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

@albie:Apparently the Grizz were commited to developing a winner, with or without A.I.

    WHAT!!! Don’t sign that bum!!

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com albie1kenobi

@B.Long: I was going to have a snarky comment regarding to the two quotes, but I thought it’d be more interesting to just present a quote and let people chew on them.
remember when bunch of people bashed on the Grizz and lionel hollins on these boards for the handling of iverson? hindsight is always funny.

I’d have thought the Grizzlies would have learned the lesson with Iverson.

    Why mess up that chemistry.

    I hope he averages 20 a game.

Stepfan, what do you think about Fisher resigning with LA this year? Alright i’m done with that now.

  • Moj

Cosign Lakeshow. I’m also interested in hearing what Stepfan has to say about the prospects of Derek Fishers chances of landing with the Lakers this year. What say you?

  • Joe

Co-sign Lakeshow with regards to Stefan ha ha

The loophole that lets a guy clear a buyout and resign with is old team after 30 days is closed. Fish isn’t going back to LA this year LOL.

    The Grizzlies sign Allen Iverson.
    .
I remember that. Hope this is better.

YES ARENAS FINALY U ARE BACK HOPE TO SEE U IN THAT UNIFOR

  • ClydeSays

I loved Gil in his prime, but that time is long gone. Maybe he’ll prove everyone wrong…

Incidently, the Celtics are responsible for the trade/buyout/resign loophole being closed. They traded Sam Cassell, he was bought out, he resigned after 10 days or so. The League didn’t like that at all…

Man, the Griz are a puzzling outfit. Sometimes they seem to make brilliant moves, then sometimes they do dumb ish like this.

  • Rainman

why? are they quiting on OJ or something? or are they gonna let him be backup PG? Either way it doesnt work with THIS specific team IMHO. I got nothing against Arenas, i was hoping he’d be on a team soon. i just dont know if this is the right place

  • gusisit

^ oj’s natural position is sg, so agent zero can play back up pg

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

a 3 player back-court rotation of Gil, Conley and OJ is DEPTH.

  • L Dribble

@luigi – thanks for that – good read. Hopefully his time out pays off. “I’m not going to lie, I feel so much better. I’m jumping and moving like before I got injured, like it’s basically ’06 again. My explosiveness, my jumping ability, my quickness — it feels like I never got injured. I can see why he’s out there doing what he’s doing at his age.”

  • jay

Griz would’ve been better had Iverson been okay with that bench role. He played well the 3 games LOL. To his credit he WAS better than Conley at that point.
