Photo: LeBron James and the Miami Heat Show Support for Trayvon Martin

Earlier today, LeBron James tweeted a picture of the Miami Heat wearing hoodies, with their heads bowed in support of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed high school student carrying only an iced tea and a bag of Skittles, who was pursued, confronted and fatally shot on Feb. 26. The photo is above, with the accompanying tweet reading: #WeAreTrayvonMartin #Hoodies #Stereotyped #WeWantJustice

justice is needed. even if it’s just 1 case out of probably thousands that don’t have the same exposure, a small step is still a step.

This story is truly sickening. I’m not always one to jump on the race debate train but this was racial profiling at it’s finest. The law does state that you can act in self defense but they was no true evidence of self defense but rather pure murder. The police even told that man to leave that kid alone when he called them and said he was following him.

Never been the biggest LeBron fan but I have to give LeBron and the rest of the Heat props for this one. I love seeing athletes using their celebrity for more than personal gain. I can’t imagine what Trayvon’s family is going through right now. This situation is completely unacceptable. Dude should’ve been locked up day one.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Don’t get this. But I guess I like it. How bout donating to his family. I’m sure they are doing that though.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

C’Mon Lake. You do know that all the money in the world won’t bring the kid back. Just because you are an athlete with deep pockets doesn’t mean you should donate to every cause that you relate to. I don’t mind if they donate, I don’t think they should be expected to donate. Just like Dwade and Antoine Walker’s situation. Still a terrible tragedy though and big ups to the Heat for their support.

  • http://dillanleuyahoo.com Holy Baller

Strongly dislike LeBron and the Heat, but definitely like this move. Like it was said above, good to see them speaking out against something bigger than basketball and something that’s not for their own personal gain.

  • AD

this is becoming a trendy situation but al least its positive… RIP Trayvon Martin

  • tomtom

    Nice gesture for sure.

  • LA Huey

Poorly organized photograph but I’m feeling the show of support.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Nick, I think money helps more than a picture, but maybe i’m being to superficial. I appreciate and respect this either way. Your right that nothing will bring back that child.

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

Good job Heat, he(k the whole NBA should do a picture like this. This is more relevant than any game played.

  • http://slamonline.com 1982

I like the coverage. It can only help in this case.

  • http://caseyvaughn.com AlbertBarr

That is actually a powerful image

  • Otis

Good for them. And AlbertBarr is right – it’s indeed a powerful image.

  • bike

Very nice gesture by these guys. Classy. However, I hate to see all the racial tension associated with this kid’s death. No one knows for certain what happened and everyone should let this play out. It’s a horrible tragedy but NO ONE can say for certain right now if race played a factor.

  • smoove

@ lakeshow..well the pose they are making in the picture corresponds to how Trayvon was wearing a hood the day he got killed

  • http://www.twitter.com/_dfrance dfrance21

It’s just a show of solidarity. NOTHING, not donations, pics, tweets, rallies, letters or phone calls, is gonna bring Trayvon Martin back, so saying you would rather have them donate money instead of take this picture really does nothing for the situation. IDK bike, I’m more in the mind that it has to be proven that race WASN’T a factor, other than the other way around.

  • http://slamonline.com The Philosopher

People are still surprised that this still goes on.
    R.I.P. to the young man.
His family, from what we’ve seen, is handling this like soldiers.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

If you can’t say for certain that race played a role in this incident, you can’t say it for any incident.

  • http://slamonline.com The Philosopher

    R.I.P. to Shaun Bell.

  • http://www.slamonline.com TADOne

The Heat players are also planning some type of tribute during the Heat/Pistons game tonight in Auburn Hills but have not said what they plan on doing.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

    cool gesture. respect

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

    Thanks smooth. Got it.
The only problem with the “hate crime” laws is that they are only possible in a white on minority situation and never the other way around. I mean, it’s strange, because every culture and race is racist/ignorant. If a group of Asians beat up a white kid nothing would be implicated about that. It’s just strange how they determine motivation. It’s some Minority Report type ish. This story appears to be obvious, but others not.

Not saying this was handled great by the police or Zimmerman, but here’s a little more info on the situation…I found it interesting…

    Amazing. Major respect.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

There are two sides to this story…I’m not standing by what Zimmerman did or what the police didn’t do, but this story isn’t being reported accurately by most sources. Once my link clears check it out. I’m interested in people’s opinion.

  • Rik Smits Mullet

great stuff by my heat homies.
I still dont get why normal americans have guns.
    Self defense my bum.
But rip to the young guy .

  • niio

Wow….I’m so glad all these wealthy high powered individuals took the time to get involved and….put their hoods on. talk about doing the least amount possible got some pub. I don’t understand why the public is all of a sudden in an uproar. Mexicans and blacks have been killing either for ever.

  • Dungeon Family

Should’ve known an ignorant ass person like @Bike was gonna leave a comment.

  • niio

How is this race? Why would cops want to protect a Mexican man that killed a black man

  • niio

That happens between gangs all the time

@smits the 2nd amendment protects our right to have guns, people legally buy guns for many reasons. Sport, hunting, and protection. If you think outlawing guns will stop anything your sadly mistaken. Criminals live outside the law, thats why they are criminals. However; this story saddens me, because regardless of whatever the outcome is this young life has been cut short. But from personal experience I can tell you the news you see doesnt tell the whole story, let me be clear, I am far from thinking this guy is innocent, but certain public sympathy cases get twisted.

  • SikhWitIt

Mad respect for LeBron on doing this after refusing to take a stand with Ira Newble on the Darfur issue. This is wonderful to see.

The Wayno article is exactly the sort of stuff I was referring too. Some cases aren’t as cut and dry as the popular media paints it out to be. Tragic death regardless, 17 is so young.

  • Rik Smits Mullet

    @shutup
i live in a country were you cant get guns legally and the murder rate is only 1% of americas murder rate.
Outlawing guns works in the rest of the world. So why wouldnt it work in the usa.
In the netherlands were i live the police and military have guns and some people who do it as a hobby but they can only keep their guns at shooting ranges. Your second admentment law is straight medievil .

  • http://www.nesn.com/2012/02/kobe-bryant-says-hes-better-than-michael-jordan-second-to-wilt-chamberlain-as-best-nba-player-ever-v.html shutup

So now guns are the only way people murder each other? whats the population of your country? whats the person per land mass ratio. Many factors play into murder rates. I stand by the idea that if you outlaw guns only outlaws will have guns.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

So because Zimmerman was getting his a** whopped by Martin that warrants Zimmerman shooting and killing him?
    F*ck that.
Zimmerman put himself in that predicament by not adhering to what the 911 dispatcher told him to do, which was to not pursue him.
If I’m a 17 year old and some grown a** man was following me, I’d defend myself too.
@niio – where in the f*ck does it say dude is Mexican? He’s half-white half-Peruvian, and in Peru afro-hispanics get treated like second-class citizens so I don’t see how that changes sh*t.

  • Rik Smits Mullet

    @shutup
the netherlands is one of the most densely populated countrys in the world.
Still the number of people killed by guns is extremely small. I dont understand why giving everybody guns makes a country safer. Look with a gun in your pocket you might shoot somebody who steps on your shoes. Without a gun you might hit the dude. I know which option i would choose. The more guns you have the easier it gets for outlaws to get a gun. Also its easier for police to shoot people because the expect that package of skittles to be a gun.
But okay this is a basketball site and this is not space to talk about this kind of stuff.and i respect your point. This neighbourhood watch just didnt have to have a gun. And the poor kid probably would just have a black eye.

@enigMatic I see where your coming from, but following someone is not attacking someone. Lets not try to justify (if it happened that way) this person attacking another but then condemn a man for defending himself (if it happened that way) in the same breath. EXAMPLE: if i’m in a store and some person profiles me, follows me around hits you with that condescending “can I help you find something?”. it wouldn’t justify me acting an @ss and just start breaking ish, or turn around and attack them.

@Smits The netherlands population is about 16 million and the state of New York is 18 million, lets not try to argue diluted facts here. Explain to me why the crime rate in England has skyrocketed since the ban on guns has been put in place. There is no correlation between gun control and crime control. Here’s an article that illustrates the point. http://www.american-partisan.com/cols/blanks/081400.htm

  • shutup

heres an excerpt of the article in case your feeling lazy, the article is a tad verbose. —-”Based on the crime rates in areas with the most and fewest gun control laws, one could argue that gun control schemes contribute to higher crime rates. There is much evidence to support this hypothesis and similar results can be found in international examples. Just recently, the violent crime levels in England have risen during the past year by more than 15%. These results represent a continuation of crime problems in England that have been encountered since their gun bans took affect in the mid 1990s. The home invasion, burglary, robbery, and a wide range of other crime rates in England now exceed that of the U.S. “—-

If this kid was in a similar situation in my country this kid would have lived. Because our gun regulations prevents a neighbourhood watch to own a gun. And he wouldnt expect a package of skittles to be a gun. This whole case is not about crime in general this case is about a gun being introduced in the mix. and because of your 2nd amendment an innocent kid died. Thats why i say that law is wrong.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Here is the account of the witness referenced:
“The guy on the bottom, who had a red sweater on, was yelling to me, ‘Help! Help!’ and I told him to stop, and I was calling 911,” said the witness, who asked to be identified only by his first name, John.
John said he locked his patio door, ran upstairs and heard at least one gun shot.
“And then, when I got upstairs and looked down, the guy who was on the top beating up the other guy, was the one laying in the grass, and I believe he was dead at that point.”
Now, why would the neighbor tell the guy on the bottom to stop yelling for help or to stop in general if he was being pummelled?
More importantly, when did it become okay to initiate a stop of a pedestrian against the advice of police, become engaged in a fistfight while ignoring police orders and then shoot someone when you’re losing that fight?
I heard all of these details early on because I’ve read everything written. What the link provided doesn’t note is the black guy with the Muslim name also told the interviewer that he was afraid to walk in his own neighborhood because he’d been confronted by Zimmerman in the past and so now he goes downtown to walk and get his exercise. I guess when trying to provide “context” the Examiner decided it didn’t want to include that detail.
It’s funny to me how often conservative white people push to be considered individuals, and then blithely deny others that same right. If you don’t want people to randomly label you or your movements racist because of the actions of a “few” then why do you feel so comfortable attempting to justify profiling and discrimination against black people because of the actions of a few?
Remember even the most aggressive estimates only say that 33 percent of African American men will have some sort of contact with the criminal justice that results in incarceration, probation or parole. That means that roughly 66 percent of the black population, or the super majority, is law abiding. So why does it make sense that the law abiding population should suffer for those who are doing wrong? Would you like it if you had to suffer indignities because of the wrong actions of others, or would you deem that unfair? Isn’t that the main complaint about Affirmative Action?
What we have here is a case where a man stereotypes an innocent black man, challenged him based on that stereotype, confronted him despite being told not to by police, potentially lied about that incident and then killed the innocent boy when he lost the confrontation he initiated against police orders.
If you don’t see who this relates to race, or you spend lots of time trying to figure out how Trayvon Martin was a bad kid then it says a lot about you and how you view the world.
That’s all I have to say.
