Orlando Magic GM Says 6 to 8 Teams are Chasing Dwight Howard

Otis Smith claims that little has changed in the Dwight Howard saga, but he did provide a number when asked how many teams were in the hunt for the big man’s services. Reports the Orlando Sentinel: “Magic General Manager Otis Smith said the list of teams who are still calling about the possibility of acquiring or ‘renting’ Dwight Howard are down to ‘six to eight.’ ‘I’d say everybody in the league has called us. …but this late, it’s six to eight,’ Smith said before the Magic faced the Toronto Raptors on Monday night. Smith said there was ‘nothing new to report’ about Howard’s situation. With the trade deadline next Wednesday, Smith wouldn’t get into any specifics about Howard. ‘We still have a ways to go. It’s early,’ he said. ‘Usually nothing gets done until the 15th.’ Howard has been talking with Magic CEO Alex Martins, who remains hopeful that the franchise can convince their superstar center to stay.”

i say just call his bluff and see if he really wants to take less money and a year less on his contract, if he leaves u get some cap room and can start over, i don’t know of any trade scenario which makes them contenders anyway.
Nobody answered this last time, but i have question. What happens if he becomes a free agent this summer and signs with lets say the lakers for one year. After that contract can they sign him for the extra year and extra dough?

I would also just rather get the cap room than a bunch of mediocre players (basically what their entire roster is currently made up of) in a trade. Start blank.

Spit hot: I’m not certain, but I think you need the 3 Bird Years to get the extra money and the over-the-cap signings that resigning teams can offer. So, (check me on this, I may be way off), 1 year wouldn’t get the extra year on the next contract.

nbk: NJ, NY, Bos, GS, Dal, LAL, SA, Chi. Those are just the rumors I hear from Magic sites and whatnot.

Caboose you are right. He needs 3-years on a roster, or 6-months on a roster after being traded to obtain/retain bird rights. As far as i understand the rule.

    You heard San Antonio?

This is a big mess, but I wonder where he will go. With the leagues harsher rules limiting the ability for super teams I think the playing field is leveled a bit. Hopefully it’s the Lakers.

Just for one year, you can go anywhere else after.

David Kahn called. He said, You know Otis, you’re a very smart GM. We both know now that smart GMs are all about maximizing their assets. Now, let me interest you in our array of point guards?
