Pau Gasol to the Rockets?

With the trade deadline approaching, rumors are heating up. Besides Rajon Rondo, it looks like Pau Gasol is the biggest name on the market and the team most interested is Houston. While Gasol publicly discussed his distaste for being traded to the Rockets during the whole CP3 trade saga, it seems like the center is more open this time around. From Ric Bucher at ESPN: “They have the opportunity to move Pau Gasol for a couple of younger pieces.  They need help at the point guard position.  Kyle Lowry would provide that, Luis Scola would be a servicable replacement at the power forward spot. …. My understanding is that Gasol is a little more open to the idea of being moved to Houston than he was back when we were talking about the Chris Paul deal.”

Stay tuned.

LA should try to get TWill

  • http://twitter.com/4point0show Wes

How come the Lakers always make out like bandits if and when trades happen? Gasol for someone who can do what he does, PLUS a guy who could have been an all-star? Is it salary based?

  • OTB

The Lakers need to make a change. As big as of a Kobe fan I am, he is the biggest impediment to the Lakers success right now, both on the court and with his contract. I know its blasphemy to amnesty Kobe for all he has done for the franchise, but he should have taken the Tim Duncan route and cut a portion of his salary for the sake of the franchise. Its biting them in the a*S right now.

  • thor

Rockets would be dumb to give up both Lowry and Scola for Gasol, alone.

  • Shifty

Drajic is underrated imo. If thy do make that trade then kudos to the lakers, they are getting more out of it then te rockets. Give Drajic more minutes and he wil produce.

  • David M.

I’m a Lakers fan to the heart, but they need to find a successor for Kobe right now. He’s having a good season individually, but they need to prepare for the future like the Spurs did with David Robinson and Tim Duncan. Real talk.

  • Shifty

And I’m talking about if lowry gets traded that Drajic would be a good starting point gaurd.

  • Sean B

As a Lakers fan, I do not want this to happen. Gasol provides too much, and while Scola is good, he isn’t close to Pau. Gasol gives us way more size, rebounding and defense…obviously the Lakers have two useless PGs, but to fix one problem and trade away their main strength (size) doesn’t seem smart. In a perfect world, they could somehow get a guy like Felton while keeping their bigs. An elite PG isn’t necessary as long as Kobe is in town bc he dominates the ball so much anyway.

  • OTB

Well, if they get Scola for Pau PLUS Lowry, that is a steal. Scola is a double double waiting to happen, especially if he has a dominant center in the mix (Bynum) who can take pressure off him. He’s not Pau, but given the fact that we we’ll also be replacing a 67 year old Derek Fisher with Lowry, who is rapidly improving, this is a steal. Seriously.

The rockets would come out losers in this deal.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

I like this trade. Love Pau, but that’s an upgradeja.

  • Keep lowry in hou

I as a rockrt fan dnt want to give up lowry fot pau i dont mind letting go of kmart or scola but lowry should be untradable let alone the 1st rd pick ive been hearing about oh hell no lol. I would rather have 2 seperate trades one dealing kmart out and one dealing scola out. But not a kings ransom for an old soft pau. If he was so damn good lakers wouldnt be shopping him qround so much if they want lowry I want bynum

Scola is a workhorse, they would really miss Pau’s length on the defensive end, but getting a pg that can keep up would be a big step for them

  • jpm34

The Rockets will keep Kyle Lowry. You read it here first.

  • http://juan.garcia@computershare.com NBA Head

You guys don’t know squat. You “almost” never give-a-away talented height for smalls. So how’s Houston getting the bad deal? You guys don’t know sh1t!

  • SikhWitIt

CO-SIGN MAX! T-Will on the Lakers would be a brilliant move. The Lakers would get the lightning quick perimeter defender that was their downfall last year. Trading for Scola and T-Will would be a solid move, imo. Then they’d just need to sign Aaron Brooks and they would be the favorite for this year’s chip, imo.

  • Cool Dude

Honestly, Gasol for Lowry AND Scola is a great upgrade for the lakers. Incredibly so.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Double J

This trade needs to happen. We keep bynum, get a talented big to play beside him and also get one of the most improved point guards in the game today? I like it even if we lose Pau… maybe we could even somehow work Terrence Williams into the trade.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com albie1kenobi

@NBA Head: you almost never “give-a-away” young for old either. So how’s Houston not getting the bad deal?

  • Keep lowry in hou

Gasoft size is too important… So keep his sorry ass and his huge contract…ill b happy keeping lowry and his small size over gasucks and his aging soft self

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Someday the Lakers will regret trading Pau Gasol. Watch him blow back up in Houston.

  • Keep lowry in hou

No way pau 31+ lory like 25… Yeaaaa uhhhh noooo

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I hope the Lakers do make this trade so we can really find out how important Gasol was to Kobe.
    I’m curious.

  • http://dsjfkl.com Jukai

So what exactly is the trade? Gasol for Scola and Lowry? That… is probably better than the Gasol for Smith and Hinrich trade. Houston loses out on this one.

  • bdogg

i love the deal to get lowry..if we can somehow get milsap for scola i would be thrilled. i would want ariza back and with that lineup we are in the finals!!!

  • Nate

Why can’t we (rockets) go for Dwight Howard!?

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

If Houston trades Kyle Lowry, I’m done with that team. I’ve been a Rockets fan for a while now but there’s no way I’d be able to root for them after that.
If they can manage to keep Lowry and get Gasol that would be awesome though.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

williams would be great for LA. I’d be sad to see him go but he hasn’t really worked his way into Houston’s rotation consistently. He’s got All-Star potential for sure, though. Guy is a beast.

  • slimtebow

Pau would do great in a hawks uniform.

  • http://www.nesn.com/2012/02/kobe-bryant-says-hes-better-than-michael-jordan-second-to-wilt-chamberlain-as-best-nba-player-ever-v.html shutup

Gasol will have a resurgence wherever he goes, cant believe the Spurs let Scola slip away, I like Blairs game, but always wondered why they decided against signing Scola.

  • hushabomb

Pau has played more games than Bynum has. With his shaky knees, you’re willing to let Pau get traded for a PG. If the Lakers trade Pau, you have traded the one thing you have prided yourselves on. That is your length. The Lakers lose more than the Rockets will. And isn’t Brooks supposed to come back from China soon….

  • robb

Man, I don’t want Pau to leave. I don’t know about this, I mean I’d love to have Scola and Kyle, but I really like Gasol.

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

shutup: They picked Splitter over Scola, not Blair. Which (at this point) looks even worse.

  • Doug

Anyone who thinks this deal is bad for the lakers doesnt really understand how good Lowry is. Turrible deal for the rockets.

  • http://www.slamonline.com spit hot fiyah

@caboose didn’t the spurs actually draft scola and then trade him to houston before he ever played for them?

  • Yesse

    I don’t like this.

  • Mike From Spain

I guess if there are team chemistry issues, the Lakers want to dump some salary, and they play a more PG friendly system now, they might consider that the trade gives them what they need. But I am kind of sad that they ship Gasol like that after being one of the main contributors to three finals appearances and two titles.

  • venom

Allenp: so you will judge Gasol’s importance on Kobe’s success without him? That’s not totally fair to either player is it? It’s not like you can disregard what Gasol meant for LA if they go on to win another chip without him. And needless to say, you can’t discredit Kobe’s accomplishments if it all goes downhill from here either, the Lakers problems are far more complex than that.

  • shutup

i know with blair and scola it wasnt one or the other, but they have similar games. just curious of the mindset, behind not signing scola ( with the connection to manu and all) but then drafting an undersized posting big. and i know they drafted scola, i just think they gave up their rights to him.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

I understand why Houston wants Pau Gasol. What I don’t understand is why they would even considering giving up a 25-year-old point guard who you can build around for years to come, for a 31-year-old Pau Gasol. You can’t “rebuild” around a 31 year old player. You can add him to the pieces you have already, but giving up young talent like Lowry makes no sense.

  • Orlando Woolridge

I’m not sure I understand the love for TWill. I know he has the potential to be a good player, but the dude has been in the league for a while now and hasn’t been able to crack the rotation on a couple of teams that aren’t even that good. I can’t say I know exactly why that is, but I’m assuming its an attitude problem? So I don’t think its worth giving up Gasol unless they can get Lowry along with Scola.

  • jpm34

Cosign Teddy-the-Bear, Kyle Lowry is an important building piece. Lowry made Aaron Brooks expendable.

  • jpm34

T-Will is a great player but must have issues, Nets dealt. him early on in career for a little of nothing.

  • http://Slam Andrew 229

I’m sure Pau is about tired of dealing with Kobe’s selfishness by now. The Lakers really needed a personality like CP3 do get Kobe to cooperate. I really don’t think they will go far without a top-flight PG.

  • http://minusthebars.blogspot.com Don

No way in the world I’d trade Kyle Lowry and Luis Scola for Pau Gasol (and I’m assuming Matt Barnes).

  • Albert J

Lowry is from Villanova , & I’m a Laker fan so lets do it !

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Yeah @ jpm34: I found it really odd the Nets gave up on him so soon… He was playing really well for them his rookie season too. Weird. The year before Avery Johnson took over as coach too, right? (I can’t really remember but i think so).

  • http://www.nba.com VanCityBBall

kevin mchale coaching a pau gasol??? i likeyyyyy, who says you cant teach an old dog new tricks?

  • Sylvester O.

I am a diehard Rockets fan, but if they go ahead with this stupid so called trade, then I will stop being a fan of their organization. Nights in nights out, they talk about great Kyle Lowry is to the organization and how agueable he’s the most important team member of the Rockets; they also talk about Kevin Martin, the team leading scorer, oh by the way, what does do for them in just about every game nights? provide much needed offense for them and lights up the score board with 20-30 plus points. If I were him too this season, I would make sure my plays reflects how unhappy and unappreciated I feel about the team eager to get rid of me. As for Mr. Scola, what can I say about him that all Rockets fan don’t already knows? Every nights the guy comes ready to play like a blue collar worker. He’s probably the most consistent players of the Rockets team, providing the team solid numbers nights after nights. Now I am not stupid! I know that the team needs a good center like the likes of Hakeem Olajuwon, Dwight, Shak, etc… but that does that mean the Rockets have to give away the whole store too? All I am saying is this, clear the roaster of meadeoker to average players like Hakeem Thalbeet, Terrence Williams, Jordan Hill, Greg Smith, and the rest of the bench warmers in order to get the money to pay for a quality center, whose name is definitely not PAU GASOL!
