Post Up: Hold You Down

Recent struggles continue for the Knicks and Clippers thanks to DRose and the Big Three.

by Abe Schwadron | @abe_squad

7 games from last night. Ready, set, discuss.

Bucks 105, Nets 99

For the first few quarters, it looked like Kris Humphries might will the Nets to a win without Deron Williams in uniform. But even Hump’s career-high 31 points, plus 18 boards, weren’t enough for New Jersey to hold off the Bucks, who all of a sudden are tied with New York for the 8-seed in the Eastern Conference. Four different Milwaukee players had at least 6 assists, including Brandon Jennings, who went off for 34 points, 7 dimes and 7 rebounds to counter Humphries’ big night. Milwaukee erased a double-digit deficit, tying the game at the third-quarter buzzer on a Beno Udrih 3-pointer before Jennings hit two to open the fourth, putting the Bucks out in front. Last time these two teams met it was Ersan Ilyasova who did the heavy lifting with a 20-20 night, but last night he scored just 4 points and had 3 boards. Drew Gooden added 23 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists for the 18-24 Bucks.

Bobcats 73, Hornets 71

If a 6-win team and a 10-win team barely scored 70 points each in a half-empty arena, did the game actually happen? According to reports, it did. Charlotte notched just its third road win of the year in New Orleans, riding a 22-5 run in the second half and holding the Hornets to 38.5 percent field goal shooting. New Orleans had a chance to tie the game—with possession in hand and 5 seconds to play—but Bismack Biyombo blocked the living snot out of a Trevor Ariza dunk attempt that would have sent the game to overtime (the world thanks you, Bismack). It was one of the big rookie’s 4 blocked shots on the night, plus he had 7 rebounds and a career-high 12 points. The leading scorer for each team finished with just 15 points (Gerald Henderson and Jarrett Jack).

Bulls 104, Knicks 99

Watching Derrick Rose play basketball is just damn fun. The MVP racked up 32 points, 7 assists and 6 rebounds as the Bulls dominated the boards to beat the Knicks, who have now lost 6 in a row and are 2-8 since Carmelo Anthony’s return to the lineup. Chicago outrebounded New York 56 to 38 and grabbed a ridiculous 22 offensive rebounds, cementing their place at No. 1 in the Eastern Conference. The Bulls are 9-1 when DRose scores at least 30 points, and have won 10 of their last 11 games. Even Jimmy Butler gave the Bulls some great minutes down the stretch (8 points). The Knicks, meanwhile, are a mess. Anthony led NYK with 21 points (8-21 shooting) and 8 rebounds, but was obviously frustrated at his lack of fourth-quarter touches, and while all five New York starters scored in double figures, the bench provided little spark, or production. At 18-24, the Knicks are now in danger of falling out of the Playoffs, as they sit tied with Milwaukee for the No. 8 spot in the East.

Spurs 112, Wizards 97

Ugh. At least it was over quickly—the Spurs shot better than 60 percent from the field in the first half, and Richard Jefferson’s corner three at the halftime buzzer put San Antonio ahead 63-59. On the same day his backup (TJ Ford) retired from basketball, Tony Parker poured in 31 points on 13-18 shooting and dished out 7 assists after sitting out the previous game to nurse a strained quad. Even after Manu Ginobili (8 points, 7 dimes) had to leave after his 20 minutes of action due to some tightness, the Spurs were just too much for my Wizards, outscoring Washington 64-30 in the paint. Tim Duncan passed Clyde Drexler for No. 25 on the all-time scoring list with 14 points, while Javale McGee led the Wiz with 21 points and 15 rebounds.

Jazz 105, Pistons 90

Has Al Jefferson finally figured it out? The Big Fella poured in 33 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Jazz back to 20-21 on the year. Paul Millsap had 12 points, 10 rebounds, and season-highs in assists (5) and steals (5), Devin Harris had 19 points and Utah shot 54 percent from the field as a team. Rodney Stuckey (team-high 29 points, 7 assists) tied the game at 85 on a driving layup with 6 minutes left in the fourth quarter, but the Jazz finished the game on a 20-5 run, capped off by Jefferson’s first career 3-pointer, which came with 4 seconds left in the game. Oh yeah, and Jefferson did all that just about 24 hours after learning that the grandmother who raised him had passed away. Be well, Big Al.

Timberwolves 127, Suns 124

When these two teams hook up, defense is optional. It was the highest-scoring game of the NBA season thus far, as Minnesota shot 56 percent, Phoenix shot 52 percent and 13 players in all scored double-digit points. Kevin Love was the high-point man with 30, Luke Ridnour hit a driving go-ahead layup with just under 2 minutes remaining, and the Wolves’ bench outscored that of the Suns 52-35 to improve to 22-21 on the season. Minnesota snapped a 9-game losing streak versus the Suns, who were led by 28 points and 9 rebounds from Jared Dudley and a 25-point, 10-assist night from the ageless Steve Nash. The Wolves hit 14 3-pointers, got 24 points from Nikola Pekovic and had 30 assists as a team despite the absence of Ricky Rubio.

Celtics 94, Clippers 85

The Celtics blew a 10-point fourth-quarter lead before gearing up again and staving off the charging Clippers, who join the Knicks in borderline panic mode, having lost 5 of their last 7. Los Angeles shot 37 percent from the field, and yet were in this one until late, when a 9-0 Boston run ending with a Paul Pierce 3-pointer gave the Cs an 83-79 lead, enough to take home a 22-19 record. Pierce scored 10 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter, Kevin Garnett had 21 points and Rajon Rondo dished out 10 dimes to go with 12 points and 3 steals. For Lob City, Blake Griffin had 24 and 9 while Chris Paul and his mask had 14 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds—but the home team shot just 37 percent from the field and made only 5 of 23 three-ball attempts, dropping to 23-17 on the year.

Lines of the Night: Big Al Jefferson drops 33 points and 12 boards in Utah’s win, Derrick Rose goes for 32-6-7 to beat the Knicks, Brandon Jennings gives the Bucks 34-7-7 and Kris Humphries goes off for a career-high 31 points, plus 18 rebounds.

Moment of the Night: “You. Shall. Not. Passsss.” —Bismack Biyombo

Dunks of the Night: DRose takes flight and your nightly Blake Griffin highlight.

Tonight: 8 games on deck, highlighted by Heat-Magic on NBATV at 7, with a smattering of other intriguing games including Rockets-Thunder, Lakers-Grizzlies and of course, Wizards-Mavericks.

BTW, I like UK playing for the title as well, rarely do I go all the way with the overall number 1 seed, but I’ve seen UK so many times this season and they’re just better than everybody else, and IMO they’ve got the best defense. Still not 100% sold on the Orange. They’re really good but I def. don’t like them as much as UK.

On another note, I’m starting to see more and more support for LeBron as DPOY, and I have to see I agree with that. I don’t want to disrespect Dwight, but just watching LeBron playing against Gasol a week ago against the Lakers, and just his overall versitilaty, I’d vote for him. Like MJ, he’s one of those rare perimeter players that deserves both MVP and DPOY.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

I understand JT. I do feel like RW is the most valuable 2nd best player in the league. Either him or Andrew Bynum.

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

We’ve actually had this convo about rose before. even if they were deng and Cj were in, he’d still be jacking up lots of shots bc everybody except him is a fairly mediocre offensive player. and I don’t fault him for it. but can we stop acting like the bulls offense ever, you know looked efficient or fluid? this is what it looks like sometimes stop being homers and face facts.

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

and speaking of choppy offenses the clippers looked so out of sync the 2nd and 3rd half smh… it was horrible. even w/ cp3 and blake in. VDN has to go. and eric gordon or jamal crawford, or SOMEBODY has to come.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Cool, so how good do you think JHarden could be down the road? Do you seem him as a team’s go-to scorer or stricly a 2nd/3rd option? I’m leaning towards a great 2nd option with 24/5/5 numbers.

  • http://dsjfkl.com Jukai

Maybe next game, Thibs should put Rose in the shooting guard position and the shooting guard in the point guard position so then T-Money will be ok with Rose taking 30 shots! Even though it doesn’t f’ing matter.
I can not believe how bad the Knicks have gotten since Melo’s return. I really didn’t think it would be THIS bad.

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

it’s hilarious that you guys are actually mad at T-money for being correct. This is BIG something that teams will exploit in the playoffs….but whatever

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

Blake is quickly gaining on KG when it comes to douchiness. Just saying.

I dont have a problem with Rose shooting that much, as long as they got the W.

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/tray24 T-Ray

Cosign nick I’m really starting to dislike the mad ginger.

  • http://dsjfkl.com Jukai

datkid: No, T-Money is wrong because he didn’t have all the information here. Follow me in my convoluted explanation.
Derrick Rose takes 18 shots a game, and usually plays 35 minutes. However, his backup (Watson) was out and so Rose had to play eight extra minutes. If we look at Rose’s averages of 18 shots in 35 minutes, then he will take roughly four extra shots in those eight minutes. So that’s 22 shots in 43 minutes.
Now, the team was missing two big scorers, Deng and Hamilton, plus Watson. In total, these players take slight over 33 shots a game. These shots have to be replaced by other players in the flow of the game. Well, Rose played 43 minutes and the entire team played 240 minutes… So Rose played roughly 18% of the teams minutes. He had to make up Watson/Deng/Hamilton’s offense in those 18% minutes, so he had to take just under six shots more a game to make up for their loss. That’s right under 28 shots. Still following?
Now, you can crucify Rose for taking one and a half more shots than he should be taking, but guys like Scalabrine and Butler probably aren’t going to be taking those extra shots, so give Rose an extra one, ok?
And, if you think my explanation was overly complicated and probably beyond nonsensical, then how about this: Rose played without shot attempt number 3 and shot attempt number 4 guy, and his backup was gone. He had to shoot that much to make up the difference. Watch the actual game and don’t just make baseless assumptions.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

JT – I think Harden could be a very good number 2. Can’t see him carrying a team at all Unless, he is a teams playmaker. He would be a good pseudo first option on a team like Orlando, but even then he’d be more of a 2nd option. I like the role he had in OKC, taking a lot of pressure of RW lettin him do what he does best. (did that even answer the question?)

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

    has* in OKC

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

I get it jukai. I’m just saying. rose shoots a lot usually. He has too. I get that and I don’t fault him for it. but that doesn’t mean it’s not a problem.

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

harden would be a dope 2nd option. and btw where was tyson chandler when on that rose poster?

  • http://dsjfkl.com Jukai

datkid: if Deng and Hamilton are out of the playoffs, then yeah, it’ll be a problem. I know Rose isn’t at the spot where people say ‘perfect point’ but his shots are down and his assists are up.
Chicago is probably going to lose on talent. You can nitpick the team their flaws as a team, but every team has flaws. Chicago is probably going to lose on Talent.

  • T-Money

jukai – your explanation/breakdown would have some merit if last night was an isolated incident. derrick rose took 24 shots per game and shot 39% from the field in the playoffs. and that was with a full squad. this is how the bulls play and it’s a problem against teams that can keep him out of the lane. it’s not as simple as calling him a shooting guard and be done with the shot selection issues, d-rose has never played off the ball in his life. so he is the player on the floor responsible of bringing the ball up, organizing the offense and giving guys the ball in their spots. during last year’s playoffs, chicago’s offense in the last 5-6 minutes of games was rose bringing it up, taking a high screen and turning the jets to throw up a lay up or a floater – only passing out of necessity. THAT’S TERRIBLE.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

I realized something last night guys. It was like an epiphany……. Michael Beasley is the small forward JR Smith…. They are the exact same player… I’m still in a state of shock.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Despite the Knicks current 6 game losing streak, and I might add against some quality opponents (@Celtics, @Mavs, @Spurs, @Bucks, Sixers, @Bulls) with a combined record of 150-102, I‘m still VERY VERY EXCITED about this team‘s chances during the playoffs – yes “we” are making the playoffs y’all. During the peak of “Linsanity” the Knicks were racking up 7 wins in a row against teams (Nets, Jazz, Wizards, struggling Lakers, @Wolves, @Raptors, Kings) with a combined record of 117-173. ALL of said opponents SAN the LAKERS are currently LOTTERY TEAMS if the season ended today. Another thing I’d like to add, Melo isn’t the only player rejoining the Knicks since Lin became the starting point guard and “face” of the franchise. Josh “JORTS” Harrellson and Baron Davis have rejoined the rotation. Amar’e is still being worked back into the rotation after the death of his brother. J.R. Smith is a new addition, and he still is learning how to play within this system with his teammates. If you think about it, that’s 5 NEW ADDITIONS since “Linsanity”: Amar’e, Melo, B-Diddy, Jorts, and JR. The Knicks coaching staff is tinkering with the starting lineup, and the rotations, trying to figure out what’s the best way to move forward. It’s going to take time and patience. BTW, I like the way the Knicks competed last night on the road against the Bulls, who are the best team in the EAST right now. It was a good game, and the Knicks could have stolen that game if they just finished their defensive possessions with the defensive rebound more, however, give credit to the Bulls for their offensive rebounding prowess…Taj Gibson was a beast last night. He’d look great in a Knicks uniform someday. ;) Not to digress, but I can’t wait to watch me some NCAA Tournament. GO ORANGE! Note: I hope Syracuse faces Harvard in the Sweet 16. Licking my chops for that.

  • http://dsjfkl.com Jukai

T-Money: If you thinks Thibs is a good coach, I’ll bet ya that this strategy will change during the playoffs, as the strategy as changed during the regular season as well.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Love and Pekovic are freaking offensive boarding beasts. Those guys will get the T-Wolves so many extra possessions for the future. Keep those two together. Hopefully no one is trying to pay Pek some ridiculous contract… Sh*t of course some idiot GM will though.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

FYI: Don’t sleep on the Cuse just because we don’t have Fab. We are deep. I’d love to see Christmas get more PT.

  • T-Money

jukai – thibs is certainly a premier defensive coach. i don’t know if he can change his style offensively, some can. erick spoelstra has improved a lot in terms of ball movement and not being rigid and predictable. mike brown on the other hand seems to be the same ol’ coach: control pace, keep the tough games in the 80s, let your superstar do what he does in isolation or PnR situations. i don’t know if thinbs can let go and develop trust in other players and let them create offense in tight games.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

    YES!
Anyways, what’s up with enigmatic? It’s not like him to pull an “Orange” and be MIA after DRose has a average game (by his standards).

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

I haven’t seen Enig in a minute on these threads. Last I heard the SLAM virus got to his computer.

  • Heals

Orange you popped off during the offseason, during Lin-week and are now feeling good after a 6 game losing streak because Josh, Baron and JR are gettin more mins, wow. Now I know why you were so arrogant before, your team selfish/individualized, is cap-strapped and may not even make the playoffs in a WEAK EC so of course you gotta make the most of how truly little you have to cheer for…

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Matic can’t post on here. For whatever reason. That’s why I have had to relay a few comments for him over the last few weeks

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

This Knicks team will figure things out in the “Knick of time.” Can’t wait to knock some high seed out in the first round. Can’t wait for that. Can’t wait to see that on the cover of SI. lol

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Bulls or Heat in the first round…who’s going play the role of the ’99 Heat for these 2012 Knicks in the first round? I hope it’s the Heat, again. Bust it in them at their house again. Yeahhhhhhh.

That Biyombo block was hilarious, son just jumped up with both hands in the air, and there wasn’t any way Ariza was putting that one down, lol. Loved the C’s resolve last night, especially on the road. Clippers and Knicks are looking mighty suspect right now.
