Post Up: Sunday Funday

Four overtimes in Atlanta, a possible Finals preview in OKC and the Grizz win in L.A.

by Abe Schwadron | @abe_squad

Wow. Big night. Let’s hit it.

Suns 108, Cavaliers 83

Marcin Gortat scored the first 10 points of the game all by himself, and the Suns led from start to finish in a drubbing of the Cavaliers. Phoenix led by as many as 28 and was buoyed by Gortat’s 22 points. The old vs. new point guard battle could be called a draw, since Kyrie Irving came up with a team-high 16 points to go with 6 rebounds and 4 assists, but the rookie also had 5 turnovers, while savvy vet Steve Nash dropped 13 dimes and needed to shoot just 2-2 from the field (4 points) to lead his team to a blowout win—oh, and he had just 1 turnover. The Cavs have lost 6 of their last 7, and Byron Scott flatly assessed his team after the latest loss with this nugget: “We’re not a very good team right now.”

Timberwolves 117, Nuggets 100

One game after putting up 51 points, Kevin Love poured in 30 and grabbed 21 rebounds—his third 30-20 game of the season and No. 7 for his career, which leads all active players (the rest of the NBA has two this season, total)—and the Wolves used a huge first-half run to build a big lead against Denver. The Nuggets found themselves down by 28 in the first half, thanks in part to a 39-9 run at one point. Luke Ridnour chipped in 25 points for Minnesota, which took home the W despite being outscored 64 to 38 on points in the paint and being outshot 51 percent to 46 percent. Denver, which was led by Kenneth Faried’s 17 points and Javale McGee’s 13×11 double-double, is now 2-6 in its last 8 road games.

Celtics 88, Wizards 76

With missing pieces on both sides, including Ray Allen (ankle), Mickael Pietrus (head) and Nene (back), second-year guard Avery Bradley scored a career-high 23 points as the Celtics beat down the Wizards. In the first quarter, Bradley scored 15 points—Washington had 12. The Wiz shot 35 percent from the field and made just 3 of 14 three-point attempts, while Boston never trailed and assisted on 24 of their 34 field goals. Kevin Garnett scored 21 points and while Rajon Rondo finished with more turnovers (6) than points (4), he ran the Celtics’ offense with ease even without Allen’s shooting, and he had 11 of those assists. Jordan Crawford led the Wizards in scoring with 20, but shot 8-18 from the floor. John Wall struggled with his shot, too, going 5-17 with 12 points and 9 assists.

Hawks 139, Jazz 133 (4OT)

You know what’s probably not fun on the third night of a back-to-back-to-back? Playing 4 overtimes. And yet the Hawks did just that, and eventually outlasted the Jazz for the epic win. It was the first 4-OT game in 15 years and ties the third-longest game in NBA history. Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin apparently didn’t care about that—he played all five of his starters 50+ minutes. The crazy box score is worth the click. Seven players on each side scored in double figures, with Joe Johnson’s 37 topping the list. Josh Smith added 22 points and 10 rebounds and Zaza Pachulia grabbed a career-high 20 rebounds to go with his 15 points as the Hawks won their fourth straight game. Al Jefferson (28 points, 17 rebounds) and Paul Millsap (25 and 13) both had big games for Utah before inevitably fouling out in the extended overtime periods. Perhaps the wildest part about this game’s result is that the Jazz had the final possession four straight times and yet couldn’t put the ball in the basket on any one of those occasions, dropping to 26-23 on the year.

Spurs 93, Sixers 76

Gregg Popovich is an evil genius. On the third night of a back-to-back-to-back, with Tim Duncan resting in street clothes, the Spurs whooped up on the Sixers—with a starting lineup of Parker-Blair-Leonard-Bonner-Green. Tony Parker scored 21 points, DeJuan Blair had 19 and San Antonio benefitted from 21 Philly turnovers. The Sixers made just 1 of 9 three-pointers and struggled to generate offense from anywhere on the court. Elton Brand’s 14 points were tops on the team, and Philly scored only 27 points in the entire second half, including a pitiful 11-point fourth quarter effort. Oh, and I found this bit from the AP recap of the game hilarious: The Spurs’ statisticians at the AT&T Center poked some fun at Duncan, listing his line in the official box score with a “DND — OLD.”

Thunder 103, Heat 87

The most popular NBA Finals pick finally has a reference point, as Oklahoma City took care of business on its home court in the first meeting with the Heat this season, riding 53 percent shooting and a near triple-double from Kevin Durant, who finished his night with 28 points, 9 rebounds and 8 assists. The Thunder had a season-high 13 steals and forced Miami into 21 turnovers, which led directly to 28 OKC points. On an off-night for Russ Westbrook (4-16, 13 points) Serge Ibaka and Kendrick Perkins provided the beef up front for the Thunder—Ibaka had 19 points on 8-10 shooting (and 10 boards) and Perkins scored a season-high 16. Miami’s Big 3 was headlined by Dwyane Wade’s 22 points, while Chris Bosh put up 18 points and LeBron James struggled his way to 17 points on 8-18 shooting to go with 7 assists and 4 turnovers. The Heat (35-12) pulled to within 8 midway through the fourth quarter before OKC made a final push, improving to 37-12 on the year.

Trail Blazers 90, Warriors 87

After a David Lee tip-in put the Warriors up 87-86 with 1:30 to play, LaMarcus Aldrige hit a turnaround 12-footer from the baseline with 40 seconds remaining to put Portland back in front, and Golden State’s offense sputtered on the game’s final two possessions. The Blazers—losers of 10 of 14 post-All-Star break—got the win behind 24 points and 7 assists from Raymond Felton and 18 points and 8 rebounds from Aldridge. Portland shot just 37 percent from the field (Jamal Crawford was 1-10 himself), but also had only 7 turnovers. David Lee racked up 16 points and 16 rebounds for GSW in the loss, and one night after rookie Klay Thompson dropped a career-high 31 points, a fellow rookie did the same. This time, it was Charles Jenkins, who scored 27 in a career-high 39 minutes—just his second career game in double figures.

Grizzlies 102, Lakers 96

The intrigue of a Gasol Bros. battle was quickly replaced with Laker drama, as L.A. fell victim to a revitalized Grizzlies team. Memphis snapped a 3-game losing streak on the last game of a four-game toad trip, handing the Lakers just their 4th loss at Staples Center despite 30 points from Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol’s 16 and 14. Even with the Laker bigs going crazy, the Grizz scored 52 points in the paint to just 36 for Los Angeles. Seven players scored in double figures for Memphis, led by Rudy Gay (18 points) and OJ Mayo (16 off the bench). In the final period, Kobe Bryant (7-15 shooting, 18 points) went hero mode, but Memphis held tough. With 5:45 left in the fourth quarter and the Lakers trailing 93-79, Mike Brown did the unthinkable—he pulled Kobe off the floor. Bryant was, shall we say, not pleased. He re-entered with 1:51 left and the Lakers down 98-91 after a pair of Pau Gasol free throws. Sadly for Los Angeles fans, he made a minimal impact, scoring zero points from there on out. To say Kobe was frustrated would be putting it lightly. The Lakers are at Golden State next before hosting the Thunder on TNT Thursday night.

Line of the Night: It’s crazy that Kevin Love’s 30 points and 21 rebounds will get overlooked because it’s become routine for him. KLove has been putting in work this year—he’s averaging 26 and 14 a game.

Moment of the Night: Joe Johnson didn’t care that it was a school night. He wanted to hoop.

Dunks of the Night: Kendrick Perkins dunks, sticks foot in DWade’s face. Consider it a metaphor for the game as a whole, as the Thunder got a big win over the Heat in OKC. Also, somebody should probably guard Shannon Brown.

Tonight: Nine games in all, highlighted by Nuggets-Bulls, Heat-Pacers and CP3′s second go-round against his former Hornets. Enjoy.

Quite a week for my Hawks. 5 games in 7 nights (including an OT game and last night’s 4 OT game). We’ve now won 4 in a row (barely lost to Boston on Monday). Just swept a back-to-back-to-back, including the crazy 4 OT win (game ball goes to Zaza last night). Won 6 of our last 7 games. Half game up on Indiana and 2.5 games up on Philly. 4th best record in the East. 7th team in the entire League to make it to 30 wins. Joe is grossly overpaid, but he has absolutely been clutch for us this week so he’s at least earning some of that contract lately. There’s a strong chance we’ll end up with the 4th best record in the East, but we’re still just #3 in our own division (behind Miami and Orlando). I hope we get Orlando in the first round (which means we need to let Indiana get #5 and we need to fall to #6). I don’t like our chances vs. Philly so I’d love to avoid them in Round 1; that’s one team that’s given us a lot of trouble the past few years. We still have a chance to move up to #3 and take Orlando’s spot, but more than likely, we’re NOT going to move up so I’d rather us move down and settle in at #6 at this point.

There was so much future NBA talent at the GA Dome yesterday in just one college game. I mean, I’d much rather build an NBA team around Doron Lamb, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Anthony Davis, Terrence Jones, Darius Miller, Marquis Teague, Perry Jones III, Quincy Acy, Quincy Miller, and Pierre Jackson… than one with Kemba Walker, Gerald Henderson, Bismack Biyombo, DJ Augustin, Corey Maggette, Tyrus Thomas, and Reggie Williams. I honestly think a joint squad featuring Baylor and Kentucky players would beat the Bobcats in a best of 7 series.

  • Otis

That was probably the best all-round game I’ve ever seen Durant play. He was absolutely everywhere on both ends of the floor.

  • FnF

Perkins should have done the cabbage patch.

It’s crazy that the Hawks always get the OT games. It was a very good game. I wish MAX (Joe Johnson) would play like this every night. If he did he would be in the upper echelon of players in the league; Lebron,KD,Wade,Rose,Kobe. Josh Smith has really improve and if he ever gets a more consistent mid range jumper he would be super scary. But the Hawks are Hawks. They will always be in the middle of the pack and will never contend. S/O to that contract that you gave to Joe MAX Johnson. Thunder with a huge statement game against the Heat. Was it me or did Lebron look timid out there? I really think the three early fouls on Westbrook helped him. It showed that he doesn’t have to jack shots just in order for his team to win. KD played a complete game and it showed that he’s just not a scorer but also a playmaker. But I truly believe if they are to win it they have to play defense like they played last night. This was the best the Thunder have played all season. S/O to Memphis complete game by the entire team. Kobe was pissed hahaha. Mike Brown…what balls to sit Kobe in the 4th for four minutes hahaha

51 points forcing OKC to double ot and 30 and 20 In a destruction of Denver. K-Love continues to make things very, very hard for those not on the bandwagon…..

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Pause the Perk dunk at 33 seconds…lol

  • Heals

LAL and Bos fans how does “Fisher to Pekins” sound?

  • Heals

I wanna watch the tourney, I really do, but I can’t. OKC v Minny, Hou v Dal, Atl v Ut, Kobe, LBJ, JoeJ, TimmyD, etc. This past weekend just had 10+ entertaining games easy, I don’t care how good the college kids are playing nothing tops NBA hoops like how it’s been lately…

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Pause the Perk dunk at 34 seconds…that sure gets your attention. Perk’s leg all up Wade’s back, and Wade’s left hand on Perk’s hip. LOL it almost looks NSFW.

  • riggs

perk didnt even do it on purpose, and on the next possesion he runs backwards into wade too.

    Spurs will win this thing!!!

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

ugh… the heat….. let’s not talk about it.

  • http://www.optimabbc.be Max

    KD MVP

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Yup because one game dictates MVP

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

I am no prisoner of the moment, but KD for MVP gained serious momentum last night.

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

    lol @ Robin Lopez

  • startown

Durant is the best player in the league, If I had one pick…any player

    I’d pick him

  • MUBWAR

Durant is the best player in the league? After 1 game against the Heat. loool prisoners of moments. You think next time heat okc meet Perking and Ibaka would go a combine 16/21 for 35 points?

  • seun

kevin durant is officially the mvp of the nba, Lebron’s been struggling as of late, and even though i don’t think he’s the best player in the league he deserves to be considered the mvp.

  • logues

i love how nbk gets all worked up over someone simply saying “KD MVP”… 28 ppg, 8rpg, 50%fg, 85%ft, over a steal and block a game for the season.. second best record in the league, best in the west.. doesnt sound like just one game determined that

  • feez_22

Its funny when people use STATS of all things to push KD as MVP over lebron. You honestly can’t be that stupid. If you use stats to promote KD as MVP all someone like NBK has to do is point out lebron’s stats and how he is having a season statistically wise that durant may take 2-3 more years to topple. You point out that lebron has wade dominating and people can just point out that westbrook is having his best season (not passing but everything else is way up). If you just like KD or you like that he beat lebron 1 on 1 for only the 2nd time in 9 total career games than fine. Don’t bring stats into this please because All I have to do is outline lebron’s stats: 26.8ppg, 8.3RPG, 53.7%fg, 76.FT, 2 steals and 0.8 blocks per game and that doesn’t even account for his 6.9 assists per game. Again… stat comparisons will get you nowhere promoting KD for MVP.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Worked up? Im just saying that’s a pretty absurd thing to say just after they play one another. Where is KD for MVP after the other night when he went for 40 and Westbrook had 45? Get the point?

  • MUBWAR

Actually Feez as a huge Lebron fan, they are pretty similar this season
    KD 27.9 8.1r 3.6a 1.5s 1b .498
    LBJ 26.8 8.4r 6.9a 2s 0.9b .539

very similar beside assists and fg %

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

    So not very similar.

  • MUBWAR

so nbk does D and locking up opposing team’s best player add something to those stats?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

no but if they did they would be even less similar. Tell me Mub, if their scoring averages were were seperated by 5 points would they be “very similar” – especially at a 4% difference from the field?

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Even though one game shouldn’t decide the MVP race, I think KD has over taken LeBron for the lead in the MVP race because LeBron hasn’t been playing up to his standards the past few weeks. I’m fine with that as long as people don’t use the “LeBron is playing with 2 all-stars arguement” against him because it’s not like KD is playing with a bunch of scrubs over there in OKC. That team is loaded.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

    -Your being emotional nbk.
-Who was it that was saying Kevin Love isn’t a top 3 PF again? Trying to remember who that was. I want to make fun of that person.
From my perspective Durant is tied for MVP right now with Bron. It all comes down to how each team and player finish out the season. Durant will have his team as the top spot in the West by a margin, while Miami will be behind the Bulls for a 2nd seed. Top team in the conference has allot to do with MVP. Durant is having just as good a year other than defensively. Bron is the better defender, but that doesn’t always play into MVP either.
-Weird how the Bulls win another game without Rose and the Lakers lose another game with Kobe shooting less than 18 field goals. That’s why you can’t pay to much attention to those little “fun facts.” They don’t add up.
Great weekend for ball all around though! Loving the new look Lakers. Sessions is awesome. I didn’t realize how good he was. I remember someone saying Sessions isn’t a PG. LMAO… He’s not only a PG, but a very, very, good one.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

That difference in assists and fg% is pretty big. We realize LeBron leads Miami in every statistical category except Blocks per game right?
    .
Kevin Durant leads the Thunder in Points Per Game and Rebounds Per Game.
    .
I am not saying Durant isn’t clearly 2nd in the MVP pecking order and having a great great season, but what LeBron is doing this year is something that should be appreciated.

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

yeah this is like the 2nd time KD has EVER beaten lebron. let’s not TOO excited… KD over LBJ is not a real argument. If you think it is your just letting your anti-lebron bias get too you.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Oh and Kevin Durant is using more possessions a game to get his inferior stats. (and we haven’t even addressed the whole defensive aspect of basketball. which is half the sport.)

  • hugo

I hate how passive lebron has been lately, he got outworked and out played last night. wtf is wrong with him???

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Lakeshow, yup so emotional. look at me lash out at people and everything.
    .
btw, where were you with your Kevin Love, love, after that Spurs game last week? It’s only when he Dominated a rookie, or David Lee that you are in here makin those little remarks. The best PF in the NBA doesn’t let a guy who just got a DNP-OLD, make them look uhm old and slow. Kevin Love is a top 3 offensive PF in the NBA. And by far the best rebounding 4 in the game. But he is so absolutely terrible defensively that it makes no sense to gloat about something that is purely your opinion.

  • MUBWAR

sorry nbk i was on a lunch break but to answer your previous q. if the scoring is separated by 5points and 4%fg. NO. Lebron is only behind Dwight Chandler and Bynum in fg % last time I checked. (3 centers). If the heat and OKC have about the same winning % at the end of the day they’re is no way KD will take that award from Bron.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

no stress Mub, my thing is we can talk about the things Kevin Durant does as well as LeBron all day, scoring & rebounding but that is not really enough to make a case that he is having a better season. That just doesn’t make any sense. Now if LeBron keeps playing like he has over the past week or two then yeah, at the end of the year we will be having a different conversation. But you can’t let one or two weeks change your perception on a whole, very long season.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Lake, I was one of those guys that said that. Why is it that you’re always on here gloating about KLove after every great game he has but as soon as he plays a bad game, you’re quiet.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

2 weeks haven’t changed my perception, I still have both of them neck and neck in the race, I just feel that KD’s slightly ahead at this very moment due to LeBron’s struggles the past few weeks. We all know that one bad game or a two-week slump shouldn’t decide the MVP race but it sure seemed like that was the case (from a media standpoint) last night after the game.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Well if I went with the media I would be bipolar.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

I mean when putting up, 17 and 13, against the greatest PF to ever play the game and it’s the worse game he’s had in the last 20, with other ones being 30,20′s and a 50,14 and that warrants his fans to have to defend him… Yeah, I think that certifies Love as arguably the best PF in the game, and a definite top 3. LOL… You know nothing of basketball if you think Love is not a top 3 PF right now.
-I believe it was AllenP that was saying that he would take Marc Gasol over Bynum. I mean if your talking about personality or something I understand, but Bynum is so much better than Marc. Offensively he dominates the paint more so than any Center in the L right now. If he gets position your done with(if no double team comes). Gasol put up 8,6 and zero blocks to Bynums 30,4(don’t know why he was so awful on the boards last night) with 2 blocks. Bynum is the better player by far. Bynum is by far the 2nd best center in the L. He’s putting up the exact numbers I predicted he would this year also. Even if Bogut is healthy next year, Bynum is dominating more than Bogut ever did. DeMarcus Cousins is the only one looking to take his spot.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

It’s not worth wasting time trying to explain things to you Lakeshow. If you can’t see that Kevin Love has bad games just like he has good ones then that’s a personal problem. Just look at his last 7 games,
.25 Points 16 rebounds 0 blocks 0 steals in a loss against Utah on 9-23 from the field,
.27 points 15 rebounds on 11 of 24 with 0 blocks and 1 steal in a loss to the Lakers,
.21 points and 11 rebounds on 7 of 20 with 1 steal and 1 block in a loss against Sacramento,
.36 points 16 rebounds on 13 of 23 with 0 blocks 0 steals in a win against Golden State,
.17 points 12 rebounds on 5-13 with 0 blocks and 2 steals in a loss to San Antonio,
.51 points 14 rebounds on 16 of 27 (in 49 minutes) with 1 steal and 1 block in a loss to OKC,
    .and then last nights game.
    - Doesn’t look like a very consistent “clearly” top 3 PF too me. Despite what you say.

  • feez_22

besides, i think getting completely owned by durant in a 1 on 1 battle will push lebron to be better for the rest of the season. I’d rather see lebron fight a regular season slump than doing what he did today in the finals… which is what happened guys. The heat went into the playoffs winning like 21 of their last 24 games. Adversity will help this team gel going into the playoffs. Their post all-star record has been less than stellar and they are bound to rebound. The whole slump started when chris bosh left the team for a death in the family. I think the heat can get back to that 11 wins in a row by double digit streak mode soon enough. The thunder are great but if anyone thinks ibaka and perk will combine for 35 pts ever again you are fooling yourselves… It was a perfect storm for the thunder. well semi-perfect. Westbrook didn’t play well but the heat had their highest TO game, were dominated by 2 bigs that can’t really score, bosh looked like he couldn’t play D out there, harden was killing and durant completely owned lebron. Usually, lebron and durant play to a stand still, westbrook and wade battle it out and bosh is ok v. OKC. No need for overreactions or prisoner of the moment mentalities. 20 games to the playoffs. Teams can jump and fall easily.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/officerbarbrady what

Myung, you gotta think bigger. Getting the 6 seed and playing Orlando means playing Miami in the second round. We gotta hope for getting the 5 seed and beating Philly so that we can play Chicago. And that way, Orlando gets to play Miami in Round 2, and they match up better with Miami than any other East team.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

You’re right but they are the ones that vote on the MVP.
Lake, who do you think is better? A healthy ZBo or KLove? Remember ZBo is the same cat that scored at will against the best frontline in basketball whenever he got the ball last night.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/officerbarbrady what

In Love’s defense, he’s been playing center for the last several games.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

JTaylor my point about the Media is that they aren’t going to feel the same way they do today even tomorrow, let alone in a month

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

-That’s a tough one Taylor. Probably Z-Bo. I’m a big fan of his game. Either one could give you more than the other on any given night, but I do think K-Love is only going to become better and better. So I would obviously take Love as my PF going forward, but give me a healthy Z-Bo today over K-Love.
-nbk, Think about the team that Love is surrounded by… Over those games he is averaging 30, 14, less than half a block and 1 steal. I mean I’d love for some bigger “Gambling stats”, but those definitely look like best PF in the game numbers to me. And for sure top 3.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

He’s shooting over 20 shots a game. His scoring verge better be high. You can blame his teammates for his inefficiencies if you want, but this is your opinion. It doesn’t say anything about what we know about basketball to disagree with you. Sorry.
