Post Up: Superman Lives

The Magic bounce back to beat the Bulls and Nash’s Suns beats Dirk’s Mavs out West.

by Abe Schwadron | @abe_squad

So if one game the Bobcats beat the Magic, and the next game the Magic beat the Bulls, then the Bobcats are the best team in the Eastern Conference, right? Marinate on that while we get the facts from yesterday’s light night.

Magic 99, Bulls 94

Last time out, Orlando lost to the Bobcats. Last night, they made up for the momentary embarrassment by beating the Bulls, behind a monster game from Dwight Howard—who racked up 29 points, 18 rebounds and 3 blocks—and a clutch 3-pointer from Ryan Anderson with just over a minute to play that broke a 91-91 tie. The Magic snapped Chicago’s 8-game winning streak, and the last time Chicago lost a game with Derrick Rose in the lineup was February 1. Rose finished with 17 points and 9 dimes but shot just 6-22 from the field. The Bulls twice rallied from double-digit deficits in this game, and even took a 2-point lead with 2:56 remaining on a Carlos Boozer (26 points, 7 rebounds, 4 steals) jumpshot off a DRose feed. But Orlando (26-15) fired back with an 8-1 run and closed out Chicago, dropping the Bulls to 33-9.

Suns 96, Mavericks 94

Dallas held a double-digit lead late in the second half, but Phoenix used a 20-4 run sparked by 12 of Jared Dudley’s team-high 18 points to regain the lead, eventually holding one final furious comeback try from Dirk Nowitzki and company to take home the win. The Suns took an 8-point lead on a Grant Hill jumper with 3 minutes to play, but Hill missed a pair of free throws with under 20 seconds left and PHX only up 2, leading to a pair of chances for the Mavs to tie things up—luckily for Hill, Roddy Beaubois missed a driving layup, then a wide open look from the top of the key, and that wrapped things up. Steve Nash dished out 11 assists to go with 11 points and Marcin Gortat did his double-double thing with 16 points and 12 boards. Nowitzki and Carter led the Mavs with 18 apiece in the loss. The Mavs are now 23-18 and No. 6 in the West.

Line of the Night: Superman’s 29 and 18, plus 3 blocks.

Moment of the Night: A Dwight Howard interview without a hint of a smile? You know it was a big W.

Dunk of the Night: Yes, Shannon Brown is still alive and well.

Tonight: I’m out for the weekend, which starts tonight with 10 games, the best of which is Clippers-Spurs. Others to keep an eye on include Wolves-Lakers, Jazz-Sixers, Blazers-Celtics and Nets-Bobcats (kidding). Have a good weekend, everyone.

I might be the only guy in the world who HATES Hubie. Over-complicates simple plays to make himself sound smarter, rarely admits he makes a mistake on a replay when he’s going on a long rant, and thinks every coach is a damn genius. Yeah, Mike Brown just ran an isolation play and cleared out everyone to the sides of the court. What a monster playmaker.

Not talking about facial hair, I don think he even has a goatee, maybe its the orange tan that looks so unnatural, but side by side pics of when he was in utah he just looks different and a lot more creepy. and a side by side pic of him and carrot top is super creepy.

@ Jukai Hubie makes a lot of mistakes now that I think about it. Like you said, he over-praises coaches, especially when they play soundbites from the huddle. I like SVG and Mike Breen because SVG calls him out on all his cliched stuff and undying support of the refs. The Heat/Lakers game last Sunday, Troy Murphy gets in the game to match Miami which had gone small, playing Bron at the 4. Mike Breen says that Murphy was inserted for his “quickness”. SVG goes, there’s no way Troy Murphy is in the game for his quickness. He would be the slowest person on this table!

He over-praises coaches because he used to be a coach himself. People in similar professions tend to gas up others in the same line of work, I don’t see anything wrong with that. His insight on the game outweighs everything else.
    Oh…I’m a big CWebb fan.

observations from a very winnable game…
deng- his wrist flaring up sounds like bad news.
korver- he says shooters shoot, but he should EVER shoot 6 three
point attempts in a quarter like he is ray allen and make the extra pass
especially when you are winning 91-89 with a chance at a 4 point lead.
rose- you know howard is going to come at you and end of the game and patience and the extra pass is needed for better look at basket.
boozer-needs to continue to play like he played last night and get open looks and easy baskets with his aggression.
hamilton- please get you behind on the floor and stay there because rose needs the help.

    JTaylor: Hubie’s insight is overrated.
But I also absolutely love Webber as a commentator.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Webber always sounds like he’s rushing when he’s speaking.
Hubie tells me stuff I otherwise wouldn’t know. I also like the color announcer for Golden State.

I like CWebb too was just telling my dad about it last night. He does at times see to be rushing himself but that will go away he hasn’t really had the experience. Oh and that Inside the NBA with Shap and 3D was horrible.

Hard to find a good color analyst. The worst are Reggie Miller, Stacey King, Matt Harpring, Michael Smith, and Tommy Heinson.
Some good ones are Hubie, Webber, Steve Kerr, Mike Fratello, and JVG is tolerable now but I couldn’t stand him and Mark Jackson together. Too many playful shots back and forth at each other, it was like Bill Walton and Steve “Snapper” Jones all over again.

Also, starting a few seasons ago, I really started enjoying listening to play by play guy Ralph Lawler call games. He just has a great sense of humor about everything.
You know how you’ll be on Twitter during a game and people are on there cracking jokes about the game?
Lawler will be doing that while calling the game. Lol
Only drawback is you have to take Michael Smith’s whininess and homerism.
Also, yes I’m a Bulls fan but the Stacey King and Neil Funk team is pretty bad.
No chemistry and King can be annoying. SUPER annoying if you’re not a Bulls fan.
I don’t get why they don’t have Chuck Swirsky doing tv instead of radio.
Anyways, surprised my comments are showing up so hi to everyone. Hope all are well.

Y’all need to really go re-read that KG interview that just went up.
    That joint is awesome.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

And I really dislike the color guy in Denver. He is Tommy Heishon West.

“Kobe with another 3! Business is about to pick up! It’s a slobberknocker! The Cerebral Rabid Black Mamba!!” – Jim Ross

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/tray24 T-Ray

Lol “Damn that Jeanie Buss damn her what a jesabelle!” “Bynum is beating up the competition like a government mule!”

  • LA Huey

I feel for Bulls fans that don’t like Stacey King. They’re just too good and fun not to watch but you gotta deal with Stacey King.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

I don’t mind the home Laker announcers(too lazy too look up names.) They regularly point out stuff that Kobe gets away with (travels, reaching fouls, offensive fouls etc and they don’t have an inflated opinion of the team’s performance. Once they were talking about OG Kevin Willis who has really short arms for a 7 footer. Talking about how he had to get some help reaching for his wallet in his back pocket because his arms couldn’t reach that far down. Now, the Clippers guys are something else.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Your right Nick. They are honestly some of the least “homer” announcers in the L. They call Kobe, Pau, and Bynum out all the time. They give other teams props and seem to enjoy watching NBA Basketball just as much as Laker basketball. I feel like people who rag on them are either Laker haters or they just don’t understand a teams color commentators job. He is suppose to be talking to the home town fans not other teams fans. Hubie is the man. Twice as old as every other commentator, but better than all of them IMO. I know he has his flaws, but he seems to be professional to go along with knowledgeable.

i’m all for Coach Hubie. a year or so ago, he was on the Follower’s NBA podcast, and he dropped mad knowledge for 20 minutes straight. he talked about how Lew Alcindor and Big O were great professionals during his early coaching years with the Bucks, about how the bench production was affected when a starter is out with injury, and a lot of other inside stuff. it was hands down the MOST educational lesson regarding to basketball that I’ve encountered, and I’ve followed NBA for 18 years. i really wish i still have that podcast somewhere.
