Report: Lakers Turned Down a Trade for Michael Beasley

With the trade deadling looming, you can expect to read about a trillion of these types of stories. Sorry. Here’s the latest rumor, per the Daily News: “The NBA trade deadline is only two weeks away, and the league’s rumor mill was cranked up to full throttle Wednesday. For starters, the Lakers reportedly took a pass on acquiring Minnesota small forward Michael Beasley for a first-round draft pick. The Lakers remain interested in every other player on every other team, if the chatter is to be believed, including center Dwight Howard of Orlando and/or power forward Luis Scola and point guard Kyle Lowry of Houston. Weeks ago, Boston was rumored to be willing to send point guard Rajon Rondo to the Lakers for power forward Pau Gasol, which seemed highly unlikely at the time. Now, it appears the Celtics actually are trying to deal Rondo. It remains to be seen if the Lakers have any interest in Rondo, whose lack of a perimeter shooting touch could give them pause. [...] The Lakers’ secondary need would be at small forward, which explained their interest in Beasley. They turned down a proposed deal with the Timberwolves, according to a report posted on ESPN.com, because of luxury-tax concerns. Beasley’s salary of $6.2 million would add to their $88million payroll, which is already $18 million above the league’s luxury tax. One of the unstated reasons general manager Mitch Kupchak agreed to trade forward Lamar Odom to Dallas for a first-round pick and an $8.9million trade exception was to trim the team’s payroll.”

    this is getting ridiculous.

  • Heals

Bigger news is that a former 2nd overall pick is now actively trying to be dumped for a very late 1st round pick…

  • Paul H

I honestly believe the Lakers should have entertained this trade, If there Is any truth In It at all. That makes the Lakers MUCH better, right now. Kid Is still only 23 and has been playing very well as of late.

Jim Buss is going to ruin the team.

  • RunNGun

Who comes up with this 5#!t? Beasley is a box of chocolates; never know what you’ll get on a given night. Let him bulk up and play PF again and we’ll see where his career goes from there.

  • startown

The question would be for both teams, is there a player in the middle to late first round depending on where the Lakers finish that is better than Michael Beasley?

  • Donnettia

How bout Jerry Buss have nothing to do with that, its Jim Buss who dont know what he’s doing. The lakers should not believe that, just get Ramon Sessions & Dwight Howard. What makes sense to me is Dwight need to think about what Kobe can help him get, that he’s been trying to get for years (Kobe has 5 rings, go ahead & be the duo to win a couple more think….) He needs to put that aside and just go with a veteran thats been there & got it done he remember who kept him from getting the championship in 2009.

Cut Darius Morris and Luke Walton to make room for Beasley.

  • http://nonstopsports1.blogspot.com/ LaKid

Thought the point of the trade exception was to bring someone in, great to see it was a payroll move. Expect a post about Jimmy Buss and how he is ruining LA on the blog (link in my name).

They are worried about salary now? Really? That is shameful.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    @BETCATS, again.

  • Ill Smith

Oh so theyre worried about payroll? Hmm…then why didn’t they use the damn amnesty on Walton?!

  • http://www.google.com/news BETCATS

The Lakers are one of the richest franchises and they just signed a $150 million tv deal. I don’t think they are as worried about losing money as you’d think. It looks like Jim Buss hiding behind a bullsh!t front not to improve the team. LOLOLOL

  • http://getwisenyc.com Christian Wise

That would’ve been a good look..

  • Donatello

In a box of chocolate I always know what I’ll get. There is a description on the back.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

No, dammit. Take that trade every single time you a$$ holes. Beasley would be a great bench scoring option. He is a better scorer than Odom and can play the 3 and 4 like Odom. It’s stupid to not make that trade if that is the truth.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

JIM BUSS! LAKESHOW – been trying to tell you for what, 6 months?

  • T-Money

    wow, that’s crazy.

  • Allen Iverson

It’s not about the “money”! It’s cap flexibility with the tougher CBA rules in the next couple of years (ie not allowed to sign free agents if your over the cap). The lakers don’t want to be strapped with Beasley, and no cap manueverability when Kobe retires.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Double J

We can only hope that by turning down this “gift wrapped third-tier, 2nd overall pick, and scoring machine” the Lakers have something better on the horizon.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Beasley makes about the mid-level, and his contract expires after next season. You wouldn’t be “strapped” to anything but a pothead who is better then everyone on your roster whose initials aren’t KB, AB, PG for a year and a half.

  • burnt_chicken

I am a fan and unabashed supporter of Jim Buss as the sole Lakers braintrust. I hope he gets to run the Lakers for the next 50 years. The buss a buss! Yeah, he keeps these Lakers moving!

  • Brandon

Man, that pisses me off. I was hoping they would do this trade. For a draft pick that would be used on a not-too-promising player??? Common Jimmy! Beasley is still very young and has great potential. I am really hoping that the Odom trade was NOT a salary dump, or that Lakers’ management are not holding their breath for Dwight, because that trade will not happen. Lakers r 1 or 2 players (Beasley was great fit) from being LEGIT contenders. They DONT need to trade Pau and/or Bynum.

  • anon

Lakers signed a $3 billion dollar tv deal! it’s disgusting that they’re pinching pennies.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Yeah, nbk… Jimmy boy needs to fall off a cliff soon… SOAB.

click my name Lakeshow, you definitely should read this article.

  • startown

As a Wolves fan, I am surprised the Lakers did not take this offer if it is true? I watched the game last night and the Lakers are huge inside and of course you have Kobe, but their bench is not very good (although they outplayed our bench last night)…

Beasley would flourish in the LA system, open all the time because of the tough matchups on Kobe/Pau/Bynum.

I doubt there is anyone on the bottom of the first round draft that can help you like Beasley

  • http://www.nicekicks.com Chris

Unless Jim Buss has scouted the next Kobe deep in the bowels of Africa that no one knows about I don’t no how they didn’t take this trade like yesterday.

  • http://www.nicekicks.com Chris

    *know, blah

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

nbk……. wow…. I mean I knew allot of that, but it just kind of put it all together…. I can only say…. wow…

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

yeah man, I haven’t really been able to explain why i never saw anything good of him taking over, but that definitely helps

  • http://www.dimemag.com showtime

wow , you penny pinching & your one of the most profitable sport team in the US.(no matter what sport). super cool beas was a gift wrap..

  • robb

Burnt_chicken is either the biggest troll ever or the stupidest poster ever.

  • will

trade pau for luis scola and lowry..morris and walton for beasly…

  • will

trade pau, for scola and lowry ,,morris, walton, for beasly

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

LMFAO, the Lakers scouting staff now consists of two kids and Chaz, Jim Buss’ buddy from the horse track? No offense to them but WOW, ahahahaha.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

At least this whole Chaz situation re-opens my dream of someday working in the L.

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

Dwight and Sessions to the Lakers
Pau and Bynum to the Magic
Jason Richardson and Lakers 2nd rounder to Cleveland.

  • bar

it doesnot make sense to not make this trade. You can amnesty luke walton and trade metta for a d-leage player, Plenty of room to fit in beasley’s contract

  • Thomas

Never count out the Lakers Management team. Buss is the man! He got Gasol for Brown! Genius! I expect he’ll make a move for Steve Nash. Or maybe the Rondo thing will work out. But the Beasley move isn’t a good idea. Wait and see but I bet top0 dollar that you’ll see something very interesting happen before March 15th.

  • BlackNicholson

Get rid of Walton, Morris, Kapono and McRobers for B-eazy.
    we need another scorer!!!!
