Report: Ricky Rubio Out For Season

UPDATE: The Star-Tribune reports that Rubio will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL and is also likely to sit out the Summer Olympics.

by Ryne Nelson / @slaman10

Wolves PG Ricky Rubio has been—by most accounts—phenomenal during his rookie season. But the 21-year-old point guard may not be on the court again until the ’12-13 season.

Rubio crumpled to the floor on this possession with just 16.4 seconds remaining in the Wolves’ loss to the Lakers. Ricky was helped into the locker room and didn’t speak to reporters after the game. Official news on the severity of the injury should come after Ricky’s medical evaluations today.

Initial reports aren’t good. We hear that the Wolves fear that Rubio might have a torn ACL, according to Yahoo!’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Minnesota Timberwolves rookie point guard Ricky Rubio will have an MRI on his left knee Saturday morning amid fears he tore his anterior cruciate ligament, a league source told Yahoo! Sports.

“Possible ACL,” the source briefed on Rubio’s condition said. “We’ll know more after the MRI. … There’s a lot of worry right now.”

The Wolves have counted on Rubio a lot this season. The rookie was playing 34 minutes per game and dishing 8.2 assists per (fifth in the L). He’s started 31 games for a young team that’s only a half-game out of the Playoffs.

Out for the season or not, Ricky Rubio has proved he’s capable of ruling el mundo.

And in the first Chicago/Indiana  playoff game… Drose wore the crazy lights for his first game.. Twisted his ankle at the end of the game… And went back to his regular shoe for the rest of the playoffs

  • RunNGun

Wow, this really sucks; my league pass just went to sh!t. This is pretty bad for the Twolves franchise; the timing couldn’t have been worse as they’re fighting for the eighth seed in the West. Have a speedy and healthy recovery, Ricky.

I feel you Dark. The Pistons even outlawed a nike shoe last season (you already know or heard of this I’m sure), so some trainers definitely do have some say. I just hope analyzing shoes for players health becomes more of a science. But yes definitely any player can he hurt in any shoe. I would just like it to be minimalized

  • Cameron

    lix….haha, that was good lol

@darksaber thats why I never bought a pair of boings or shox whatever the VC shoes were back in the day, they always seemed unstable in the heel area, also dont advise playing in airforce 1′s or any air-max type once the bubble pops. Its not playing the 34 minutes a game by itself, the shortened season and overseas minutes arent the same as NBA minutes

I’m very very sad for this. He was having the time of his life, finally playing in the NBA and making it big. This really sucks, ACL man… I just hope he gets 100% healthy again, Olimpycs are secondary now.
    @Bravo: f*ck you

  • bravo

Smh ricky you deserve this :) u think ur that good? All i really see is ppl hyping your game up.
In my eyes all u can do is make the assist in a fancy way. U dont play d and def cant hot junp shots when needed. Wolves will b much better without u. Thats rite im a HATER

  • goattree

@shutup – advising not to play in Nikes with a visisble Max Air cushioning system that’s been blown is like advising a Formula 1 race driver not to compete on a flat tire, good advice, but must be common sense, no?

  • ripslam

I doubt his shoe choice made a whole lot of difference. The Hyperenforcers really aren’t that different from the Hyperfuse 2011s he was wearing before. Both use Hyperfuse material with Zoom Air cushioning setups.

  • Shem

This might be a blessing in disguise. Realistically, when you evaluate Minni’s roster their too good to get a good pick and not good enough to make a legitimate playoff run. This team needs a center. With this injury, they’ll most likely slip out of the 8th seed and get a draft pick in the lower teens. Other than Drummond, the only solid center is Meyers Leonard who’s most likely going to go around there. If they could pick him up, add that to the development of Rubio, Love, DWill, and the eventual trade of either Beasley or Wes Johnson and this team has got a bright future.

    Wow..That SUCKS.

@goatree common sense isnt so common and not really the same thing, a car with a blown tire is a lot different than a sneaker with a cracked bubble, obv I’m not talking about on the pro level, I’m pretty sure those guys get new ones every game, I think I read that Jordan mighta got new ones every half. In all reality even with a blown bubble you only lose about a quarter inch on each side of support, it doesnt seem significant but it makes a lot off difference.

  • dev0

worst news in a long time. ruins the olympics

  • DABIGFUNDAMENTAL

OUCH !!! torn ACL… Hurts for him. Luckily is very young and can recover. Sad news. For pro ballers they seem better and better to heal this type of injury these days. Mucho animo to him

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

Shem: I’m pretty sure Pekovic is a more than capable center…it’s that shooting guard spot that’s a problem. Luckily this upcoming draft has no shortage of 2′s. Brad Beal maybe? Austin Rivers if he slips?

  • robb

I’m pissed. I became his fan just recently and this happens…SMH

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Caboose, you really think Rivers is coming out?

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Plus they don’t have a pick unless Utah makes the playoffs

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

Yeah, I really think he will. He seems the ambitious type…
And I totally forgot about the Utah caveat, right. It really is a shame about Rubio….I hope he’ll be able to come back ok.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

I just think it would be more beneficial for him all around to wait. Unless he is trying to play for his pop. Waiting a year almost guarantees he gets drafted higher, plus gives him times to fill out.

  • Shem

@Caboose: Pekovic cannot be the starting center on a championship team. They need to draft a center and either trade or sign a guard. It’s much easier to find a scoring guard than it is to get a defensive center.

  • Mike From Spain

What do you think of traning the shot from one of those paralympic basketball wheelchairs? He can always watch the team practices. He can add upper body strength and keep his other leg’s conditioning. The injury is bad but it will not completely stop his and the team’s development.

  • Paul H

@Shem So you think that a guy averaging 14 and 8 over his last ten games (In under 30 mins) Is incapable of being the starting centre on a championship winning team? Ever heard of Luc Longley?

  • jpm34

Bravo spends his weekends doing stunts for Little Richard.
