Report: Ricky Rubio Out For Season

UPDATE: The Star-Tribune reports that Rubio will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL and is also likely to sit out the Summer Olympics.

by Ryne Nelson / @slaman10

Wolves PG Ricky Rubio has been—by most accounts—phenomenal during his rookie season. But the 21-year-old point guard may not be on the court again until the ’12-13 season.

Rubio crumpled to the floor on this possession with just 16.4 seconds remaining in the Wolves’ loss to the Lakers. Ricky was helped into the locker room and didn’t speak to reporters after the game. Official news on the severity of the injury should come after Ricky’s medical evaluations today.

Initial reports aren’t good. We hear that the Wolves fear that Rubio might have a torn ACL, according to Yahoo!’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Minnesota Timberwolves rookie point guard Ricky Rubio will have an MRI on his left knee Saturday morning amid fears he tore his anterior cruciate ligament, a league source told Yahoo! Sports.

“Possible ACL,” the source briefed on Rubio’s condition said. “We’ll know more after the MRI. … There’s a lot of worry right now.”

The Wolves have counted on Rubio a lot this season. The rookie was playing 34 minutes per game and dishing 8.2 assists per (fifth in the L). He’s started 31 games for a young team that’s only a half-game out of the Playoffs.

Out for the season or not, Ricky Rubio has proved he’s capable of ruling el mundo.

Click my name. His ACL is torn. Rubio to miss remainder of season an Olympics.

  • MikeC.

I guess that unprotected pick the Clippers were dishing around in various trades has its full value again. Seriously though, this sucks for the Wolves. They were on their way back to respectability and playing a style that was fun to watch. I was actually kinda amped for Hornets-Wolves tonight. Not so much any more.

  • Heals

Ugggghhhhhhhh!?!? This kid reps everything there is to like about hoops and now having had this happen reps everything I hate about sports – season ending injuries…

  • D12FSU

this sucks, him and the wolves were so much fun to watch, and the olympics aren’t going to be the same without him

  • angus

the curse of slam covers, good job guys…..

  • onions baby onions

SLAM cover injury curse making a comeback?

  • TO

Reading the Youtube comments made me take a closer look..it is apparent that as he planted the weight shift indeed might have torn the ACL, in which case it has nothing to do with the impact from Kobe for those who are curious…

  • http://www.slamonline.com Dagger

Damn. And the Olympics? Sad stuff. Hope he comes out on fire next year.

  • http://slamonline house

damn that sucks, I hope he can make a Griffin like comeback when he returns, great player to watch.

  • http://www.andywhitby.com Andy Whitby

I hate classless people like Bravo who wish ill on others just because they are jealous of the success they have compared to their own lives.

  • http://slamonline.com The Philosopher

We must educate our brethren. We shall not hate.
We cannot combat hate with hate.

  • Jake

Well this sucks. An ACL injury can really take the wind out of your sails, and I’m saying that from personal experience. Especially when your whole game is based on cuts and being able to make split second decisions. It’s going to be a long road back to full strength but at least he isn’t a dunker. Most of his time is spent on the floor, which will make it a lot easier on his knee when he does come back. The only advice I’ve got for him is to find a good pool and get used to being in the water for half the day lol.

  • http://hoopshirts.com hoop shirts

    no.

    noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!

    my 3rd favorite player!!!

i guess that’s what you get for showin’ off so much.

just make a simple pass dammit!

  • Mike Mihalow

Bummer, dude. I’m gonna miss all those Minnesota home games where every time he makes any kind of pass, you can hear everyone in attendance have one big, simultaneous orgasm.

  • BrackMamba

thats what happens when you try to stop Kobe in the 4th.

  • El_Black_Mamba

    Go kings

  • El_Black_Mamba

Chris webber is better than ricky rubio

  • tavoris

    that sucks and blows.

  • talieru

    the mamba strikes again!
    damn you slam curses!

  • logues

i was at the game last night and knew right away it was bad cuz he couldnt even walk by himself, had to be carried off the court. but that sucks, he had like 3 great passes last night, including a couple behind-the-backs where as Mike Mihalow said above, the whole crowd just goes crazy.

  • cardel

Sad news, he was having an awesome rookie year.

  • http://www.twitter.com/gerardhimself Gerard Himself

    damn it

  • Fat Lever

With the advancements in surgery, a torn acl isn’t the death sentence it used to be for an athlete. He’ll be fine, it’ll just take a little bit of time.

  • Canesta

q desastre! I can’t express how sad I am. And I just bought a Rubio jersey! I’ll have to wait until next season to wear it.

  • Rainman

This is sad. Horrible. Hopefully he gets bak to 100% for the coming season

  • underdog

Damn it. Hope he gets better soon.

  • Matt Park

Now he’s gonna be even worse at finishing in the paint…

All jokes aside, I sincerely wish him a speedy recovery. A torn ACL has ruined many careers and let’s hope that it won’t ruin his…

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85Bl3GRdULQ&feature=youtube_gdata_player 1982

Wow. And just like that, the wolves are the wolves again.

  • mustard

the fact that this is an olympic year makes it 100 times worse. get well soon ricky.

  • http://www.nesn.com/2012/02/kobe-bryant-says-hes-better-than-michael-jordan-second-to-wilt-chamberlain-as-best-nba-player-ever-v.html shutup

Sad to see anybody get hurt, truth be told he wasnt gonna change the outcome of the Olympics. Hope he fully recovers from this, however much I couldnt stand the hype never wished anything like this on anyone. At least he’s young, and has more of a chance of being able to heal. Is it wrong to blame his coach for running this rookie 34 minutes a game? when clearly he was starting to drop off production wise, whether due to the NBA game itself or the compressed schedule. coaches should be mindful and take a page from Pop’s book, and from white men cant jump, sometimes when you win you lose, and you lose you win, etc……

  • http://slamonline.com The Philosopher

I’ve seen players get serious injuries on less than 34 minutes per game.
Besides, he’s been a pro for a while. He does have some miles on him, already.
One can never know when an injury will occur. We just know that they can occur at any moment.
    Greg Oden.

RICCCKKKKYYYYYYY *cuban gooding jr voice in boyz in the hood*

  • j

oh man this sucks so much

  • Mike from Spain

To be honest I half expected some injury to happen, such as a muscle tear or landing awkwardly on a wrist while penetrating in traffic. I did not expect him to do his ACL in. Damn! This kind of thing used to be career ending, let’s see how he does.

  • Kilo

Hope hope will be fine. Will be an All-Star guy if he gets back full strength.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Man that really sucks.

  • Tmac

man this sucks….That USA v Spain gold medal game woulda been good still might be

gasols, ibaka somehow is up there , rubio, fernandez , navarro …smh oh well

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

Switching midseason from the Hyperfuse to the fairly new Hyperforce might also have been a factor her. Half the Nba wears HD’11, a very comfy and stable shoe. I’ve only seen 4 or 5 big minute players wear the Force regularly (Iggy, Milsap, Gay, Marion, Odom and at times Rondo) of those Iguodala switched back to the Fuse sometime in early February.
I tend to pay attention to the gear choices that are made in the L and judging by the small amount of Hyperforce wearers (compared to Fuse or HD 11′s), i’d be wary of those kicks.
Of course it was an unlucky foot plant during his attempt to trap Kobe, but the old shoe MIGHT have cushioned the move better.
    Just a thought.

  • Startown

Sucks, not as fun to watch now, it will hurt both the Wolves and Spain

  • FruitMan

This in terrible news for the Minnesota Timberwolves. Without Rubio, the team will be much worse. He is the point guard and he is the best! I know for a fact they will be a worse off team now!! Also, Beasley was caught with a lot of drugs. That is not good for the team!!! At least Kevin Love is good! Go Timberwolves!

  • http://Slamonline.com Mars

Get WELL soon Ricky. Hey it’s entertainment though. Good/Bad People die everyday. That’s what really sucks. Change gon come.

  • http://hoopshype.com/rumors.htm nbk

Dark I bet that is something that teams are looking into. I haven’t really seen many guys wearing the Hyper Forces either.

  • Da-Meat-Hook

As someone previously noted, the combination of medical advances and his youth will have him back in no time. I think the fact that he doesn’t rely on his athletic ability/explosiveness the way some of the other pgs do will make his injury less apparent. Also, cosign anybody who hated on Bravo’s comment!

  • Matt Park

He might get considerably worse on defense… He relies on using his length to make up for his lack of elite quickness. If he doesn’t, however, get up to 100%, he’s going to have a much harder time staying in front of his man.

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

Nbk: yeah, they probably will. Although not sure how much influence the trainers have on the players shoe choices.
Al Horford once told me it was entirely up to him and he sometimes consulted with Nike pre-season.
Again, pretty sure a wrong plant / ligament tear can happen in any shoe, especially in a pro bball player, just noticed that certain players who switch models after using one consistently (Wade for example) have more problems.
Most irritating one for me was when Dampier decided to switch from Shox to something else IN THE LAST WEEK OF THE REGULAR SEASON, and promptly busted his ankle killing any chances Dallas had in the playoffs that year.

  • Jzakoni

And in the first Chicago/Indiana  playoff game… Drose wore the crazy lights for his first game.. Twisted his ankle at the end of the game… And went back to his regular shoe for the rest of the playoffs

  • RunNGun

Wow, this really sucks; my league pass just went to sh!t. This is pretty bad for the Twolves franchise; the timing couldn’t have been worse as they’re fighting for the eighth seed in the West. Have a speedy and healthy recovery, Ricky.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

I feel you Dark. The Pistons even outlawed a nike shoe last season (you already know or heard of this I’m sure), so some trainers definitely do have some say. I just hope analyzing shoes for players health becomes more of a science. But yes definitely any player can he hurt in any shoe. I would just like it to be minimalized

  • Cameron

    lix….haha, that was good lol

  • http://www.nesn.com/2012/02/kobe-bryant-says-hes-better-than-michael-jordan-second-to-wilt-chamberlain-as-best-nba-player-ever-v.html shutup

@darksaber thats why I never bought a pair of boings or shox whatever the VC shoes were back in the day, they always seemed unstable in the heel area, also dont advise playing in airforce 1′s or any air-max type once the bubble pops. Its not playing the 34 minutes a game by itself, the shortened season and overseas minutes arent the same as NBA minutes

  • AQWORD

what’s up with this $hite not posting !! SLAM , youre good peeps but you suck too much c0(k sometimes.

  • feez_22

    Dammit.

  • http://Officialblogfamily@tumblr.com OBF

  • http://www.yahoo.com The Fury

The Cover Jinx is still in full effect…darn it!

  • http://moontain.org Fredd

no problemo David K must have a bunch of PG left under his table … ( get well soon Ricky, maybe now you don’t play for spain in the olympics, other teams’ luck will rise a lil ).

  • http://www.acb.com A l a n

I’m very very sad for this. He was having the time of his life, finally playing in the NBA and making it big. This really sucks, ACL man… I just hope he gets 100% healthy again, Olimpycs are secondary now.
    @Bravo: f*ck you

  • bravo

Smh ricky you deserve this :) u think ur that good? All i really see is ppl hyping your game up.
In my eyes all u can do is make the assist in a fancy way. U dont play d and def cant hot junp shots when needed. Wolves will b much better without u. Thats rite im a HATER

  • bravo

Thats rite ppl keep saying BRAVO cuz you know the injury to ricky is truly……..BRAVO

  • http://www.nba.com Red

    Bravo is a sock cucker.

  • bravo

Just trade for jermey lin lmao im sure hes strong enuff not to get injured during crunch time BOIIIII………BRAVO

  • goattree

@shutup – advising not to play in Nikes with a visisble Max Air cushioning system that’s been blown is like advising a Formula 1 race driver not to compete on a flat tire, good advice, but must be common sense, no?

  • ripslam

I doubt his shoe choice made a whole lot of difference. The Hyperenforcers really aren’t that different from the Hyperfuse 2011s he was wearing before. Both use Hyperfuse material with Zoom Air cushioning setups.

It’s official, Bravo is 7 years old.

  • hugo

andy whitby hey your mom says hi from my bed uk sucka

  • EBOY

man i gotta agree with bravo on this im not even a big ricky or wolves fan. but im happy at this moment

  • hugo

thatsssss rite keeeeeeep talking BRAVO and say what you wish as long as ppl keep saying my name than imma keep chit chattin bout ur boy who cant play in the nba no more hahaha

  • Shem

This might be a blessing in disguise. Realistically, when you evaluate Minni’s roster their too good to get a good pick and not good enough to make a legitimate playoff run. This team needs a center. With this injury, they’ll most likely slip out of the 8th seed and get a draft pick in the lower teens. Other than Drummond, the only solid center is Meyers Leonard who’s most likely going to go around there. If they could pick him up, add that to the development of Rubio, Love, DWill, and the eventual trade of either Beasley or Wes Johnson and this team has got a bright future.

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca niQ

    Wow..That SUCKS.

  • http://www.nesn.com/2012/02/kobe-bryant-says-hes-better-than-michael-jordan-second-to-wilt-chamberlain-as-best-nba-player-ever-v.html shutup

@goatree common sense isnt so common and not really the same thing, a car with a blown tire is a lot different than a sneaker with a cracked bubble, obv I’m not talking about on the pro level, I’m pretty sure those guys get new ones every game, I think I read that Jordan mighta got new ones every half. In all reality even with a blown bubble you only lose about a quarter inch on each side of support, it doesnt seem significant but it makes a lot off difference.

  • dev0

worst news in a long time. ruins the olympics

  • DABIGFUNDAMENTAL

OUCH !!! torn ACL… Hurts for him. Luckily is very young and can recover. Sad news. For pro ballers they seem better and better to heal this type of injury these days. Mucho animo to him

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

Shem: I’m pretty sure Pekovic is a more than capable center…it’s that shooting guard spot that’s a problem. Luckily this upcoming draft has no shortage of 2′s. Brad Beal maybe? Austin Rivers if he slips?

  • robb

I’m pissed. I became his fan just recently and this happens…SMH

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Caboose, you really think Rivers is coming out?

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Plus they don’t have a pick unless Utah makes the playoffs

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

Yeah, I really think he will. He seems the ambitious type…
And I totally forgot about the Utah caveat, right. It really is a shame about Rubio….I hope he’ll be able to come back ok.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

I just think it would be more beneficial for him all around to wait. Unless he is trying to play for his pop. Waiting a year almost guarantees he gets drafted higher, plus gives him times to fill out.

  • Shem

@Caboose: Pekovic cannot be the starting center on a championship team. They need to draft a center and either trade or sign a guard. It’s much easier to find a scoring guard than it is to get a defensive center.

  • Mike From Spain

What do you think of traning the shot from one of those paralympic basketball wheelchairs? He can always watch the team practices. He can add upper body strength and keep his other leg’s conditioning. The injury is bad but it will not completely stop his and the team’s development.

  • Paul H

@Shem So you think that a guy averaging 14 and 8 over his last ten games (In under 30 mins) Is incapable of being the starting centre on a championship winning team? Ever heard of Luc Longley?

  • jpm34

Bravo spends his weekends doing stunts for Little Richard.
