Stan Van Gundy on Orlando’s 59 Points: ‘Our Offense Was Pathetic’

The Orlando Magic only managed a pitiful 59 points against the visiting Chicago Bulls last night, and head coach Stan Van Gundy didn’t mince words (when does he ever?) when assessing his team’s performance. Per the Orlando Sentinel: “Plagued by turnovers, an inability to stop Carlos Boozer and some tired legs, the Magic fell to the Bulls 85-59 at Amway Center even though Rose sat out the game with a groin injury. ‘We’ve just got to play hard,’ Magic center Dwight Howard said. ‘They outplayed us at every position, one through five. They outplayed us. It can’t happen if we want to be a championship team.’ [...] ‘Tonight, they sent a team out there that played without their star player and did what they needed to do to win the ballgame,’ said backup big man Glen Davis. ‘And they beat us. They beat us with no problem. I wish they would have had Derrick Rose, in a sense.’ Just 11 days earlier, the Magic beat the Bulls — with a healthy Rose — 99-94 in Chicago. That Magic team played together that night. Like a team. This Magic team didn’t. Playing their third game in four nights, the Magic managed just 59 points, turned the ball over 19 times and shot just 35.3 percent from the field. ‘Our offense was pathetic,’ coach Stan Van Gundy said. ‘And that’s something that I’ve got to take a look at because we’ve got better players than that. I’ve got to take a look at what we’re doing because it’s really two games in a row now where we’ve been very, very bad offensively.’”

  • MUBWAR

when boozer keeps blowing by howard all night for an easy layup, you will see scores like that too. If Superman takes the night off on D, it’s a bunch of Calderon like defense out there. yuuck

Tomorrow I’m expecting an article where Dwight Howard says he wants to leave Orlando again. 59 points is high school basketball type ish… Baylor’s womens basketball team couldve beat Orlando yesterday!

Ironic, the team he didn’t want to sign with, and the MVP he didn’t want to play with smashed his entire team to pieces…That game was great to see as a Bulls fan, why would the idiot re-sign with them?? pull a Lebron! we’ll hate you, we’ll talk bad about you either way, Mr. Howard.

Not making any excuses for pathetic play by Magic, but this shortened season coupled with back to back to back games is resulting in some really crappy play. Some of these teams are looking really gassed before the first tipoff.

Stan Van Gundy’s vibe is just too negative. The Magic needs a new coach.

I love the knee-jerk reactions out of fans who don’t quite know what they’re talking about. Y’all forget that Orlando beat Chicago, IN Chicago, last week. That game was an ugly thing to watch, but every team has bad games. And the Boozer dominance was mainly because of Ryan Anderson (who looked like a player from middle school last night).

  • RunNGun

Why can’t Orlando play like this every night? LOL

u can make all of the excuses u want. idc if u played 3 games straight. cant score 59 points at home

I saw the game and the 59 points may have had something to do with the Bulls’ defense. LOL.

I have to hand it to Thibodeau. That man can coach. And to think the Bulls’ best player wasn’t even on the floor……Impressive.
