Steve Nash ‘Would Definitely Listen’ to a Miami Heat Offer

by Marcel Mutoni @marcel_mutoni

Steve Nash will be one of the most prized free agents this summer, and though the point guard (38 years old, and still leading the League in assists) says that returning to Phoenix is what he’d like to do if they’re serious about winning, he’s keeping all of his options open.

Those options, apparently, include possibly teaming up with LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and the rest of the Miami Heat. (*Gulp*)

Nash made an appearance on the Dan Patrick Show today, and said that if Miami made him an offer, he’d listen very carefully:

“I’d listen,” Steve Nash said. […] “I love what they’re doing there. A lot of people don’t like them because they put all that talent together.”

“But they’re professional, they play hard, they play together. Their coaching staff has done a great job. So, I have a tremendous amount of respect for them, and I would definitely listen.”

Steve Nash also said that he thinks the Phoenix Suns are willing to spend and make moves to improve the roster, so that he can have a legitimate shot at his first NBA championship. Nash — though still obviously brilliant at his advanced age — doesn’t have a lot of time left to be playing at such a high level.

If he bolts to South Beach or another contending team this summer, it’d be difficult for most reasonable basketball fans to be upset with Steve Nash’s decision.

Rainman, his offer was based on Nash’s injury history and age, it was a wise decision. And let’s not act like Cuban was only going to give him the minimum. Bottom line, Nash left an established contender for more money. And after 8 years, his former team has more championships than he has NBA Finals apperances.

i’d say go to Orlando. i think you’re the missing piece there and Dwight Howard would feel delighted to have you on their number 1 position.

What about they trade for Howard and sign Iverson?

if nash goes to miami, hes gonna be in a reserve role. total liability on the defense if there ever was one. in contrast, chalmers plays actual defense and good defense at that. he can go to miami for a bag of hot cheetos and skittles if he wants to but if Im miami, Id be worried abt the frontcourt depth or lack their of. I already saw this comin. phoenix and dallas have given nash multiple chances to win titles with 50 and 60 win teams and plenty of talent on each one. he couldnt cut it. phoenix is in rebuilding mode – its the volatile nature of every organization. phoenix have had their ups and now theyre having their downs. nash didnt take full advantage during the “up stages”. its unrealistic of nash to think phoenix is going to rebuild in 1 season. just leave.

The Suns will be able to add a few key players after this season. The contracts that come off the books at the end of this season include:
GRANT HILL 6.5 m (may retire/resign vets minimum?)
STEVE NASH 11 m (may resign?)
    SHANNON BROWN 3.5 m (traded)
    AARON BROOKS 2.8 m (China…??)
VINCE CARTER 2.9 m (traded, guaranteed for 4 m only)
    MICHAEL REDD (vets minimum?
    GARRET SILER (already waived)

These guys will have money. It’s going to depend on whether they can bring an all-star calibre big man in.
If not…Nash will look at the team the Suns ‘plan’ on putting out there and it could work or he’s gone. I think the Suns really need to move Childress and Frye and bring in a better calibre big man to play with THE POLISH HAMMER, a 2nd year Marcus Morris, Dudley and Hill who they should resign straight away.

NOT TO DIGRESS, but no way Nash comes to NY this off-seaso now that his “coach” is gone. I hope he does go to the Heat.

  • http://www.starting5.com.au NM30

That’s unfair to the rest of the league

  • jetstar7

Back then, Cuban didn’t want to commit to an aging 30yr PG and match PHX’s offer to Nash who was reluctant to leave Dallas and his friend in Nowitzki. Correct me if I’m wrong, but if your old team won’t match or come up with a higher offer, short of waiting around for another team to offer, you have to go to the team that wants to sign you. To imply that Cuban or any self-respecting owner or GM will ever offer a minimum contract to a high performing, if not elite, PG in Steve Nash circa 2004 is laughable.

-Meekly raises hand- I’d like to see him in Orlando….

  • shutup

This is a very diplomatic answer, would love to see him win a championship before it’s all over. Great pg and quite possibly the best shooter the league has ever seen.

  • IamYOU

JUST DO IT! NASH ON MIAMI HEAT DO IT!!!

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

The (Suns) will likely lose an asset (Nash) for nothing this summer.

‘Advanced age’ bahaahha he’s not senile.
If you haven’t, check out my site and my take on the #FreeSteveNash movement.
I love Nash (who doesn’t?), but he got back to back MVPs, with one of them being one of the most hotly contested ever. Does he really ‘deserve’ more?

  • loloponkz

.nash just listen..f i will nash ,i would go to LAKERS..HEHEHE

  • BBaller

@AllenP and Da meat Hook, it’s not double standards. I ,like many people don’t begrudge or dislike Lebron or Bosh for leaving their respective teams in pursuit of winning. For one more time( i cannot believe you guys still don’t get it) IT was the way they left their teams that was the problem. They both made ” the decision ” to leave and go to Miami months before the announcement but like egotistical douche bags they selfishly led on the NBA public.Especially Lebron with the Cleveland fans. If Nash does bolt from Pheonix at the last minute and leaves the fan base there thinking he may have re signed. Then YES he too is a douche bag( i can think of more appropriate word but will refrain).Or is it just another Race thing with you AllenP?

It’d be interesting to watch Nash play with the big 3. Anyone else agree it would work best if he came off the bench? He could spell LBJ + D-Wade while creating offence for the second unit and hopefully get Bosh’s numbers up. Chalmers could still start and the benefit Cole would get playing under Nash’s tutelage would be incredible. Defence is a liability but under Coach Spo’s system and Turiaf’s (if he stays) post defence would help cover some of that. A second unit of Nash, Chalmers/Cole, Miller/Battier, Bosh and Turiaf could play a lot of good minutes.

The difference between Nash and Lebron or Bosh is that he’s much older. Like Payton, like Malone, like Shaq, Barkley, Drexler, Ewing…all guys at the later stages in their careers went looking for teams to give them the best shot at a title. Shaq was the only one out of that group who already had titles. You guys want to slam Nash for leaving a contender ready team in Dallas yet Lebron leaves a team consistently at the top of the league and getting at least to the Conference Finals and Finals and it’s somehow not as big of a deal? Nash is also playing out his contract the same way Bosh and Lebron did. The guy has been nothing but class but leave it to the SLAM haters to find something to try and hate about him. Sucks for you guys that the small Canadian white kid made your heroes look stupid on a nightly basis while taking his team to the top of the league. Let’s not kid ourselves that the Suns weren’t one pair of ridiculous suspensions away from winning it all that year too

  • jay cutler

BBaller, if you’re being honest then I advise you to get a life. I’ve seen people get over bad breakups/divorces quicker than people have been hating on LBJ for The Decision.

  • BBaller

Have a life Jay, a good one in fact. Got over the Lebron thing quite a while ago actually. No hate here, just don’t see how it relates to Nash’s current situation.

  • AQWORD

Forget the B.S. Stevie deserves a ring & Miami is the place where hel get one.

I have a hard time believing that Nash thinks Phoenix has any interest in maintaining a competitive roster after their track record of the last several years. They have let Amare Stoudemire, Joe Johnson, Shawn Marion, Raja Bell, Quentin Richardson, Jason Richardson, Shaq, Goran Dragic, Leandro Barbosa, and many others go. I’m not counting Vince Carter since no one expected them to keep him. Aaron Brooks is another player, although you could argue the lockout took him away.

The team could not hold on to GM Colangelo, Coach D’Antoni, nor GM Steve Kerr (who found a way to squeeze out the last of Shaq’s productivity).

The Suns have not shown any interest in paying for talent in the last several years besides signing Nash. Off the top of my head, their other free agents have been Grant Hill, Josh Childress, and Hakim Warrick.

I don’t know why Nash has been so willing to be so loyal to the team which basically made it more and more challenging for him to play at such a consistently high level (of offense) every year since he won the second MVP.

I’m still upset that Sarver dismantled the “7-seconds-or-less” team

    Just do it!

  • trueballer4life

IF NASH GOES TO THE HEAT, THEY GOT EVEN A BIGGER SHOT AT THE TITLE, NASH WILL RUN THAT OFFENSE WITH DELIGHT!

  • elreymago

HAHA go for it Steve! Heat starting 5 next year:

Nash, Ray Allen, D-Wade, CB, LBJ!!

  • larrybird1

I am not so sure that Nash and James can coexist, Nash being a true point gaurd and LeBron a point gaurd (in his mind) If James can transition to being a front court player and stop chillin uptop this would be a lethal combo (Scary to consider all that talent on the same team)

  • Bostonballer

people buy chips every day…no big deal

  • Dale Mc

Let Steve play and do what ever he seems
Fit. I’m sure he is going to stay in Phoenix
Tho, there are really not to many places he
Can go. Most teams are already caped
    Good luck where ever
    He Lands PS CLASS ACT

  • gogs

Does Nash seriously think phoenix could make the type of moves that would make them a contender? I just don’t see that happening in the next 2 years.

nash would be great. he could spread the floor,an the could use the under-rated mario chalmers at the 2 at times.we know age is a factor for nash, but miami needs someone who dont mind passing,to keep lebron in the pain. With his ablity to move the ball he creats better opportunity for Miami to beat teams up in the paint. that give Dwayde options as well in the paint.James jones Mike Miller are the key peices along with the hopeful pick up nash, cause then the only one needed is a big man in free agentcy or in the draft. that would open the floor for the heat ,lebron and the fast break. Nash is the one to go after the title in 2012 you herd it here first.

nash would be great for them. he could spread the floor,an the under-rated mario chalmers could get burn at the 2 at times.we know age is a factor for nash, but miami needs someone who dont mind passing,to keep lebron in the paint. With his ablity to move the ball around (nash/lebon(assit monsters)they creat better opportunity for Miami, to beat teams up in the paint. that also gives Dwayde more options as well in the paint.James jones Mike Miller are the key peices along with the hopeful pick up nash, cause then the only peice missing is a big man in free agentcy or in the upcoming draft. that would open the floor for the heat ,on more of lebron and the fast break. Nash roamin the ball come playoffs to slow the game down an he has one of the highiest filed goal percentages in the nba at 38. i mean fisher is with OKC they will get better. so after MIAMI win the title in 2012, a big man an steve nash will get lebron a great start to that 7. you herd it here first.
