The End of Linsanity in New York

by Marcel Mutoni @marcel_mutoni

I suppose that one could make the argument that the Linsanity phenomenon ended when Carmelo Anthony rejoined the New York Knicks’ lineup earlier this month, but now that Mike Woodson has replaced Mike D’Antoni on the bench, Jeremy Lin’s days of being the team’s offensive catalyst are a thing of the past.

Woodson announced the death knell of Linsanity in comments to reporters about the new system he will put in place, one that will see Anthony and Amar’e Stoudemire getting the lion’s share of touches and shots.

From SLAM contributor Jake Appleman, writing for the NY Times:

Woodson ran his first practice and began to make it clear to his players that this is now his team, at least for the rest of the season, and not Mike D’Antoni’s. That almost certainly means it will be a Knicks team that will slow things down on offense and run an isolation-heavy system more suited to Carmelo Anthony’s ball-dominating inclinations. “It’s everybody’s ball club,” Woodson said after practice Thursday, when he was asked if the Knicks were once again Anthony’s team, as they were before Jeremy Lin briefly took over. “I want everybody to feel comfortable. When I put a guy in the game, if he’s got a shot, I want him to feel comfortable about making that shot.”

But then he spoke more bluntly, saying that he wanted everybody to know that when “I’ve got to get a big shot, I’m going to go to Melo and Amar’e and guys that have done it,” a reference to Anthony and Amar’e Stoudemire. “A lot of these guys are young,” Woodson said in reference to their teammates. “They’re still trying to figure it out.”

Jeremy Lin momentarily appeared to have saved the Knicks’ season, leading them at one point to seven straight electrifying wins. But then Carmelo Anthony returned from injury, and it all went to hell during a nightmarish six-game losing streak, leading to the resignation of Mike D’Antoni.

Sad as this may be not just for Knicks fans, but for anyone who had fallen in love with the unbelievable-yet-true Jeremy Lin story, this is the way things were always supposed to be in New York. Team owner James Dolan didn’t gut the roster to acquire ‘Melo and STAT just to have them play second-fiddle to anyone else.

The Knicks will only go as far as Amar’e, Carmelo and Mike Woodson take them — frightening a thought as that may be for their fans.

Linsanity is dead; long live Linsanity.

How about McMillan to New York? Eh?

  • FLIGHT 9

After 10 games i think knicks fans want to bring d antoni back…. Yes, including me.. Sorry mike about my comments earlier..

  • Paul H

I wonder what ‘Melo’s trade value even Is right now…

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

LA Huey got it right. That was funny.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

And Paul H, are you who I think you are??

  • Paul H

That depends who do you think I am?!

  • anonymous

@startown cosign. ppl have gotten too caught up in the hype. NY didnt gut their team for melo and stat just to have them play 2nd and 3rd options to a guy who “Blitzkrieged” 7 teams in the mediocre to horrible ranges – mostly horrible. He seems like he`ll be a nice player but certainly never ever a #1 option.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

You’re delusional if you think having Mike Woodson as coach only benefits Melo. Did you see the Knicks play the Blazers last Wednesday night? Both Melo and Stat played well. Stat played magnificent, shooting 8-10 from the field in about 25 minutes of play for 17 pts and 8 reb. Melo shot 6-12 from the field in about the same time as Stat (25 min) for 16 pts 7 dimes <–So selfish? 2 reb to go with a steal. Oh and Teddy, perhaps the Knicks would be better off without fans like you. Yeah I said it. *rolls eyes*

  • Jerome

STAT had 2 rebs … wow. Blazers will make the playoffs. Knicles will not. Swallow it.

Linsanity the phenomenon died when they met the Miami Heat. Jeremy Lin isn’t Linsanity. He’s a young kid with a great future in the works if he develops right. He’s not a 25ppg 11assists guy on the regular. That was his coming out party. It stopped when other pg’s took it personally that he was annointed Point God in the middle, not the end, of a 7 game win streak. If you’re a basketball fan, support his growth. If you’re just someone who watches Lin highlights on youtube, stop acting like you’ve been a fan since he was on the bench. If Sessions led the Lakers on points and assists for 7 games, they wouldnt hand him the keys to the locker room. This should have happened. Not the coaching change, but the change in offensive focus.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Jerome…STAT had 8 rebounds, and the “selfish” Melo had 7 dimes…one more than the great Jeremy Lin. Open up now, and SWALLOW IT WITH A SMILE. YOU’RE WELCOME.

  • ab40

amare’s game is based on athleticism and his is declining. He can’t go insided anymore because Chandler is posted on the block now a days and he isn’t the smart and willing passer shaq was when they played toghether so amare is stuck on the outside. Melo likes to post up as well but he’s the third option there. Smith likes to chuck up shots, so do Shumpert and Douglas. This team is going to be as good as their ball movement and since that will be non existent I predict either a first round sweep or not making the playoffs again.

  • Backboard

i dont care about the Knicks either way – they win, they lose, they make the Playoffs or they dont. whatever they do, they wont be Champion any Time soon. One thing i would like to say though: Orange, you have Easily become the Most ridiculous and ignorant commentor on this Site. now, if you just want to troll than Thats Fine. but if you want to be taken seriously you might want to change your Attitude, just saying. Even jtaylor Turned into a respectable Person on here – take notes…

  • Paul H

Co-sign Blackboard, Orange you sound like a five year old who has stumbled onto his dads computer sometimes

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/tray24 T-Ray

Yea JTaylor used to be like that not as bad though. Orange has moments where he is pretty insightful so I think him being a troll is still up for judgement.

  • http://www.michaelcho.com M Cho

Only the trainwreck that is the New York Knicks could take the best, most inspiring, most popular story to come out of the NBA this year…and completely destroy it.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Paul H, please stop acting like a 5 year old behind your dad’s IPAD. @Blackboard I don’t take notes here…but you might want to keep taking them. ;)

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

@M Cho sorry to see you’re so disappointed after a 42 point win sans Pringles. lol

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Haha, forgot Taylor use to troll on here. I probably did a little also when I first came here.
    +
Orange who’s more athletic, Baron Davis, or Iman Shumpert? I wanna say Shumpert, but he can’t pass as well as B-Diddy… Any inside info from the athlete/Knicks expert?

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/tray24 T-Ray

    Lol @Lakeshow

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

LMAO…I’m going to say B-Diddy’s beard makes him more athletic. Next question!

  • http://www.michaelcho.com M Cho

@Orange…we both know where this team is going under Woodson. 1 blowout against a demoralized blazers team on the verge of firing their coach doesn’t mean much.

  • salty

    Orange, you are unflappable.

  • Mas

Thw Knicks just committed Seppuku. Look it up.

  • DominiqueH

ain’t no way in hell he could garner that many assist and points and still be garbage in any system

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

    Thank you salty.

  • bull22

come on @orange, the FAIL BLAZERS, LOL. back to back wins against the pacers is a start, but knicks are a long way from being contenders if ever with
woodson’s iso-ball. the knicks so far are in the lead for “NBA FAILURES OF THE YEAR AWARD”. HAHAHAHAHHAHAHA

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!!! Orange vs bull22 Round 1!

  • Paul H

The Wizards hung 120 points on the Blazers recently Orange, they going to be taking It to the League soon to?

  • shm

    Linsanity ended a minute ago…

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

Stat needs to do like Ewing and develop a fade-way cause God knows his knees aren’t going to let him dunk by the time his contract is up. It was a matter of time before Lin went to the bench either this season or next. Melo, I don’t even know where to start with son…

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

If anyone believes the Knicks ran a new offense not even 12 hours after D’Antoni was out as coach (game against Portlad) you are stupid. Yes. Stupid.

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/tray24 T-Ray

C’mon Lake don’t start the unstoppable. Once they start there will be no end lol two guys that are some of the most loyal a$$ team fans not to mention those teams are the Knicks and Bulls?!

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

@ NBK, you actually right. That offense was MIGHTY similar to D’Antoni’s except that this time Melo actually stood on the wing and waited for the ball to be passed to him instead of running into the paint. Tonight we’ll see what Woodson’s offense looks like.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

I know I’m right I watched that game (one of the few opportunities I’ve had to watch a non-nationally televised Knicks game), and Orange keeps going on and on about it, like a retard at the special Olympics who thinks his gold medal actually makes him a world class athlete. I honestly do not care if this is offensive, to believe such stupidity to be true is insulting to intelligent basketball fans.

  • bull22

@lakeshow, no is fighting mon, its just friendly banter. in the end its just a game moron! HAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAA

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Not trying to be rude to you O, but man I am sick of blatant stupidity from Orange. It’s ridiculous.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

O, the Knicks offense in the first half went mostly through Melo and Amar’e. It was not speedball offense.

  • bull22

and there we go again with nbk’s mr spock commentary, rather dullish.
you and lakeshow are probably some of those losers on this site that will blog as different users.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

nbk, you didn’t watch the Blazers at Knicks game. It’s so obvious. LOL

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Go ahead bull, you right, everyone would much rather here your perspective on basketball then mine.

  • Ty

    Known:
If Melo didn’t have his groin injury, Jeremy would never have his chance.
If Linsanity was not real, Knicks would never win seven games in a roll.
    Unknown:
If Melo were benched by D’Antoni, would the Linsanity continue?
If Jeremy is taken out of the picture, will Melo lead the Knicks to success?
Well, Linsanity has created so much positiveness and money for the Knicks, so Dolan can continue to show off his $18M Mashmelo.
It is time to start watching NCAA games and forget about Knicks.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Sure I didn’t Orange. The Knicks must have crawled up and down the court, I mean they did score 121 points, and 38 of their 80 shot attempts were 3′s. You are a genius.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

hear your perspective > here your perspective

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

If you want to get all smart it’s “read your perspective”

  • Mas

    Seppuku!

  • Paul H

Orange really has a habit of dragging a discussion away from the factual, rational and sensible Into the realm of the playground.

  • Heals

Cool now I can just watch him play ball, enjoy the story and not have to put up with the hyperbole on every play he makes. Shame on all the leeches who sucked the story dry and then ditched him when Linality set in about his ability/performance…

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

I’m talking first half nbk. The Knicks offense went through Melo and Amar’e. Playing that way along with solid defense gave the Knicks a 26 point halftime lead over the Blazers. Melo and Amar‘e played about 25 minutes each and played almost entirely in the first half. The second half against the Blazers belonged to the second unit that got hot (16-30) from behind the arc…J.R. and Novakaine alone torched the Blazers for 13 three pointers on 24 attempts. HOWEVER, I can’t wait to see more Woody Ball against those pesky Pacers tonight. I love watching the offense run through Melo and Amar’e. ISO ISO BABY!

  • Bishop

As much as it is about skill winning basketball is also about confidence. What we saw when they losing started (and Melo returned) was that fire that Lin played with during his breakout started to wane. I dont want him to lose that because it was truly electrifying.
