Derrick Rose: ‘I’m Sick and Tired of People Trying to Take Cheap Shots at Me’

by Adam Figman | @afigman

Derrick Rose takes a beating. Anyone with his skills would, what with the flying around guards and big men en route to acrobatic, body-bending finishes around the rim, all while those same guards and big men do their best to slow the reigning MVP down anyway they can—even if it means hitting him with a flailing elbow or shoving him mid-flight. And, frankly, Rose is sick of it. So sick, in fact, that he took to the media about the beating he ensues nightly after the Bulls 100-94 win against the Detroit Pistons Sunday night.

Via the Chicago Tribune:

One call Rose did get came with 4:31 left in regulation. [Charlie]Villanueva whacked Rose as he drove on a fast break, getting some ball, arms and cutting Rose’s face. Villanueva compounded his mistake with a technical foul for a four-point Bulls possession.

He and Rose exchanged words as he left to get his cut addressed.

“I’m sick and tired of people trying to take cheap shots at me,” Rose said. “I was mad, man. I’m a man, so situations like that, you have to say something. He hit me in the face and didn’t even aim for the ball.”

Rose can lobby for calls as much as he’d like—and he may have a great point, because he has been getting beat up around the hoop—but as long as he’s dominating offensively, he can expect those annoyingly dangerous cheap shots from frustrated defenders to keep coming. Here’s hoping the hit that injures him (any further than he’s already been injured) doesn’t come anytime soon, if at all.

He is a sook too man this new generation of nba players are crybabies

  • bull22

every team the bulls face is going to throw everything at rose including the refrigerator hoping that by doing this they can knock out bulls out of playoffs, the key is the whole bulls needs to continue to lock in, step up
    and get it down.

    @red
i would be hospitalised if i tried driving the lane in todays nba. But probably died in the nba of yester years. Also because iam not build like a tank or a cast member of 300 like most of the driving nba players are. But because i didnt play in the nba i cant complain about million dollar athletes who even get payed thousands while getting fouled. Come on dude. Bill laimbeer probably would have eaten drose during the 4st quarter and get away with just a simple foul.

  • lakernation

In New Orleans we call them bounties!

  • http://www.fullc0urtpress.com KHOLIDAY

D-Rose starting to feel himself…. U get fouled like everyone else in the league. You’re a strong, athletic dude. Ppl are going to foul you to try and prevent a 3-point play. Plain and simple… First you were a demigod now this? Cmon Son (ED LOVER VOICE)!

  • AsadSaleh3

AI after Game 2 of the NBA Finals in 2001 said something like “I can’t remember the last time I only went to the free throw line twice with how much I go to the basket.” How is what Rose has been saying different than that for those of you who say AI never “whined” or “complained”? Rose isn’t feeling himself at all. He just wants fouls called when they occur. Again, the 90s are over. Come join us in 2012. This is a different league. Let it go.

  • AsadSaleh3

It’s very easy to say “Stop whining” while you’re sitting behind a desk with no knowledge of taking hard fouls in the NBA. Again, look at it from his perspective.

-Rose sees three defenders in paint but open lane.
-Rose drives full speed at defenders.
-Defenders move outside restricted zone and put hands up.
-Rose collides with largest defender, throws hands wildly, falls awkwardly.
    -No foul call, Rose whines.
-Repeat, with the occasional foul call.

@ASAD, It’s all in how you say it homie! What AI said comes across completely different than what DRose said

  • robb

Imagine what would Rose say if he had played against those Pistons from ’89.

co-sign AsadSaleh3, It sounds like a bunch of broken dreams on this thread.

What fouls are we talking about here? I swear people make it seem like rose is getting tackled out there. He sometimes gets those EXTRA HARD fouls, but so does everyone else. if rose doesn’t want.hard fouls he should try the wnba, because the nba has ALWAYS had hard fouls and they always will. Especially if your a player like rose who is built like LeBron, hard to stop and constantly drives hard to the lane.

  • T-Money

people need to stop romanticizing the 80s and 90s. yeah, detroit and new york were very physical but that was not the whole league. i remember growing up that west coast games would routinely be in the 120s or 130s, no one was playing any defense in the western conference.

  • http://cechicagorilla@aol.com yada

what u mean how a.i said it? did u see a.i postgame convo? better yet did u even see d.rose postgame convo? how do u know “HOW” he said it? or u just judging how by words printed on a screen

  • http://slamonline house

All the haters on here calling DRose a whiner, crybaby etc need to wake up… it was called a flagrant for a reason you f*cking tools.

    Thank you T-Money.

  • tomtom

Iverson used to get beat up way worse and he would either get in the guys face or shut up about it if you want to cry to the media then tell your coach to do it for ya like D12 n Blake.

  • jake

He should just start throwing elbows when he goes in for a layup, knee a few people in the nuts….

  • jake

The whole point is, if you’re going to play tough d, so be it. But throwing cheap shots on purpose to “punish” someone is idiotic and shouldn’t be tolerated. Play the game the way it’s supposed to be played. I have no respect for people that can’t play defense, bailing themselves out by being cheap.

  • AsadSaleh3

AI sounded exactly like Rose. Very calm. Just voiced his displeasure. They said it the same way. And AI said it on the biggest stage in the NBA, in LA after an NBA Finals game. I do believe the Bulls miss Kurt Thomas for this reason. Kurt would have layed out Stuckey or any other guard to send a message. No enforcer on this team.

  • AsadSaleh3

    laid*

  • anonymous

I have been watching basketball since forever and there is no comparison to what Iverson went through and what rose is griping about. Iverson`s slight, bony build and persistent, gritty invasions of the defenses` painted-area is unparalleled. AI just wanted his due opportunities at the charity strike when he got hammered. He accepted the beating and the consequences or injuries that accompanied the physical nature that defenses impose upon him, he just wanted to be compensated with free throws. rose is in fact complaining about being fouled (hard). if you drive into the paint, you will not be granted a free layup by the opposing team or an AND1 opportunity. that`s the reason for hard fouls to prevent AND1s and to send a message to the opposing team that you are not going to do whatever you please in “our painted area.” hard fouls does not equal “cheap shots.”

  • http://theurbangriot.com The NUPE

I understand why he’s frustrated, but all he’s really accomplished is letting other teams know that the hard fouls are getting to him. Hence, in the playoffs you can count on teams stepping up and being even more physical with him.

  • AsadSaleh3

…All Rose wants is foul calls, same as AI. No dirty play. He feels that some fouls are dirty plays that aren’t on the ball. Same thing.

  • jake

When you throw an elbow at someones face, then yes it’s a cheap shot. Wrap him up if you don’t want him getting an and 1.

  • djb

    @NUPE I agree.

  • nbaNw8

    Why everyone bashing Rose?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Red

Rik, I’m saying though, would u not want to protect ur body? It’s what pays the bills. If you’re being trampled all the time & not protected by refs you’d be pissed too.

  • bubuh

That why he needs to work on his jump shoots

  • Jerome

@AsadSaleh3: 90s hip-hop is better plain and simple. Real lyrics. Real talk. None of this Weezy/Drake/Minaj nonesense. Hip is knowledge and hop is movement. Put the two together and you get 5 sides of a coin.

  • Jerome

oh yeah … Iverson >>>>>>> Rose.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Red

No enforcer? Kurt Thomas? LOL no he wouldn’t have, u have some horrible theoraticals.

  • djb

@jerome all day, everyday in response to both comments.

  • http://www.blogspot.com LLC#12

In any league on any court in the world, players receive cheap shots all the time, thats how basketball is…at least Rose gets paid millions of dollars…

  • AsadSaleh3

Not arguing which era is better because that really doesn’t matter here. The main point is that the 90s are over and you can’t compare the two eras as if today’s players should play like the guys in the past did.
@Red You think the Bulls have an enforcer? And Kurt Thomas isn’t one? Ever watched him play? Some of you all really comment as if you don’t watch much basketball at all.

  • http://www.nba.com Red

Yes because you’re all knowing about basketball? Well, funny cause we have the toughest bigs in the L, and Kurt is 40 & when he was here he never started no big fight/argument. So you look like an idiot.

  • AsadSaleh3

@Red I just watch. Apparently you don’t. Boozer is tough? I wouldn’t say “we” as if I’m a real Bulls fan like you just did and then claim that the Bulls have the toughest bigs in the league when Boozer is included in that frontline. I think that may be your bias showing itself.

  • anynomous

  • http://slamonline.com house

Watch Boozer and you will see that he plays terrible defence, especially close to the basket, poor lateral movement, doesn’t keep hands in passing lanes etc. He get carried defensively by the OTHER Bulls bigs, (Noah, Asik etc). His offensive ability, (which is also soft in some respects) carries his poor defense. I am a big time Bulls fan and always have been but calling Boozer ‘tough’ is a huge over statement.

  • b

Allen Iverson without the heart… AI never complained he just got up and killed em again…

  • titanic

@b you right on point with that assessment. rose needs to toughen up and handle his business on the court. I miss AI.

  • AsadSaleh3

Again, AI talked about not getting foul calls numerous times.

  • YC

    LOL @ AI NOT COMPLAINING

    HE COMPLAINED ALL THE TIME!

  • shutup

tough guys, aint to many left. let someone touch a goalie in hockey, or land a hard check on your goal scorer theres gonna be a problem. Too many people worrying about being liked, this is what you get when you dumb down everything, keep childproofing everything and over using hand sanitizer and handing out trophies for participation, welcome to the world we live in.
