*Pau Gasol. Seven-foot Spaniard Pau Gasol is arguably the most athletic big man in the NBA today. After setting nearly every franchise record during seven seasons with the Memphis Grizzlies, he was traded to the storied the Los Angeles Lakers, where he teamed with superstar Kobe Bryant to win back-to-back NBA championships. Entering the shortened 2012 NBA season, Gasol was the subject of constant trade rumors, but with the trade deadline behind him, the four-time all-star can now focus on playing deep into June. REAL SPORTS correspondent Jon Frankel sits down with the 31-year-old Gasol to discuss being a Laker and the pressure that comes with the Hollywood spotlight.

REAL SPORTS has won the Sports Emmy® for Outstanding Sports Journalism 14 times and has received 22 Sports Emmy® Awards overall. It is the only sports program ever honored with the duPont Award for excellence in broadcast journalism, having first been recognized in 2005. On Jan. 19, REAL SPORTS received its second duPont Award, for a series of investigative reports on concussions, highlighted by the Aug. 2010 story revealing the scientific link between sports concussions and the onset of ALS. On March 20, the program received four Sports Emmy® Award nominations for the 2011 programming season, including two in the category of Outstanding Sports Journalism. The winners will be announced April 30.

athletic is not a word i’ve ever used to describe gasol, certainly not in comparison to the nba’s other bigs. maybe skilled, not athletic.

lmaooo @ them calling pau gasol athletic

  • MikeC.

Gasol is athletic. Coordination, footwork, quick feet, soft hands. Those are all athletic traits. “Most” athletic is a bit much.

  • Jer Dawg

“Athletic” is subjective. Jumping high, lifting lots of weights, running fast is something we think of immediately when it pertains to “athletes.” Baseball players and soccer players are athletic with great hand- eye, feet coordination. Gasol compared to a few other NBA athletes is on low end, but his hand eye and feet are extremely athletic compared to other athletic players, that have very poor coordination. Gerald Green is great athlete, but what else was he good at besides jumping and running? Kwame Brown physically more intimidating than Dwight Howard, but his poor coordination makes him seem unathletic. I say Gasol is great athlete.

  • Bleh

He’s not one of the best athletes, but he is one of the best big men. There’s a difference.

  • Joe Black

Pau Gasol’s main talent is not athleticism. He is one of the most cerebral and multi-skilled big men in the game. And one of the classiest high character players.

Slow news week. Come on HBO.

@MikeC when comparing Nene to DeMarcus Cousins, who do you feel is more athletic? I ask because i was discussing this with someone and we disagreed.

  • dahon

im excited to watch it…viva espana.

  • b@lls

We all the know most athletic big man is Lebron James hehe.

  • Mike From Spain

I watched the Dallas Lakers game yesterday and I was surprised at how nimble Gasol appeared, he’d been a bit slow for some days. I really did think he looked more athletic than earlier in the year. Same for TAFKAR (the Artest formerly known as Ron). But I’d say Deandre Jordan, Javale McGee, Dwight Howard, Nene, Noah, are more athletic than Gasol. Bynum is stronger but I am not sure he’s quicker. I can’t think of more big men to enter the argument right now, but to say that Gasol is on the lower end of athleticism is to underrate his shape.
