NBA Trying Out Corporate Logos on Jerseys in the D-League

The NBA is cautiously approaching the issue of placing corporate sponsorships on team apparel, and quietly trying them out in the D-League. Reports the AP: “While the NBA studies putting sponsor logos on jerseys, the Development League is placing them on their teams’ uniforms in the playoffs. BBVA’s logo will be featured across the back of all jerseys during the NBA D-League playoffs, the league announced Monday. It’s the first time a marketing partner will have brand exposure on a D-League jersey other than adidas, the league’s official outfitter. BBVA, a financial service institution, is the presenting partner of the NBA D-League playoffs and finals. NBA owners discussed placing sponsor logos on their jerseys during their meetings last week, but are just beginning the study and Commissioner David Stern said he doesn’t expect to take any action next season.”

let’s see how this affects d-league jersey sales, thats right people don’t buy them. I don’t think trying them out in the d-league will give any indication as to what would happen if they put them on nba jerseys

I will never buy another NBA jersey as long as I live if they go through with this crap. I have bought hundreds of jerseys since I was 15 now Im 37. It is disgusting we are even having this discussion. The uniforms are sacred. Screw Mark Cuban and Stern. Those guys are such jokes. They are pathetic. Black ball A.I. the greatest little man in the game. Rip the Lakers off out of getting CP3. But its ok to make a laughing stock out of the historical and sacred NBA uniforms. Pardon me while I go puke now.

can someone answer a question for me? I, probably like most of the other followers of SLAM, love having unique or simply different ball jerseys, shorts, or whatever. How come if I want to buy a D-league jersey, I cant buy one from the D-league online store?!? All they sell are tee shirts and hats. I dont even care if the there is a player’s name on it but I want to own some cool D-league swag!

They should put them on warm-ups! Then the companies get their product advertised clearly at the game on TV without making the jerseys look stupid. NBA generates more revenue, companies get to advertise, the jerseys still look cool. Everybody is a winner

@spit hot fiyah jersey sales? That’s not the main reason to put corporate logos on jerseys.

@orange he’s saying jersey sales will decline if sponsors logos are added to them (which they will, especially amongst jersey collectors), which will offset the money paid to the teams by the sponsors for having their logo on the jersey

@Bt I think this is perfect for the D-League. Local corporate sponsors on the jerseys to give the team an additional revenue stream.

    thanks bt

@Bt Of course the collectors will stop buying jerseys if there are ads on them, as would guys like you and me. But the kids will still want a LeBron or a Griffin jersey, even if it says BVBA on the back, and that’s where most of the sales go. Plus, what the companies will pay will be more than high enough to compensate the sales drop…

I think it’s a good idea, if I was a business owner I’d look for additional ways to increase revenue as well. I don’t think jersey sales will be impacted much (but some), a persons favorite team/player doesn’t change because a ‘dominos’ logo is added to the back. I could see an initial slippage in sales, but over time they’ll increase again. It will just be interesting to see how players that endorse competing products respond. For example, if you Endorse Kia Motors but Ford is put on your uniform – will that player try to cover it up like the Dream team did with the addidas logo?
