Phil Jackson: Everyone Should Relax When it Comes to Andrew Bynum

Former Lakers head coach Phil Jackson has observed the emergence and petulance of Andrew Bynum this season from afar, and he thinks people are getting too worked up over the young big fella’s occassional missteps. Reports the LA Times: “Phil Jackson has a message for everybody criticizing Andrew Bynum. Settle down. The former Lakers coach said he enjoyed seeing Bynum’s development, even if it had been filled with inexplicable turns the last few weeks. ‘Bynum is not quite mature, but everyone should relax and watch him grow up,’ Jackson said via email. ‘This year has been a big step for him offensively…nice to see…and when he takes up the mantle as defensive captain the Lakers can get back in the hunt.’ Jackson was strict with Bynum while coaching him for six seasons, prodding him about his fitness, getting more rebounds and playing better defense.”

You know what? I actually miss PJ and whenever there’s an article on Slamonline about him I read it and enjoy his insight. Him and Poppovich are my 2 favorite coaches.

So would Phil be okay with him bricking a few threes every game just for fun?

  • huami

@BIKE of course not, i believe it was covered when he said that bynum was immature!

  • JD

He’s 24, in his seventh season, and makes $15 million a year – there is no excuse of immaturity.

Maybe if Bynum appeared to be getting more mature (a la DMC) then we could give him the benefit of the doubt, but he seems to be regressing. Not a good look.

Lets get him to play defense, that’s my only issue. BOOK IT!!

24 years old, male, and immature? Wow, never seen that before. Phil is right, relax.

Thats easy for Phil to say; he coached Bynum for like 6 games a season!

  • Mooney10

Bynum is another typical pre-madonna sports star. Thinks he deserves certain things because after 6 years he finally had an all-star appearance, still an immature, unprofessional guy in regards to attitude. Those are things that can never be taught IMO, work ethic on the court means nothing if you’re gonna make bad decisions after the work you’ve been puttin in, guys haven’t learned consistency means more than on the court it also is incorporated off the court as well.

Dude is 24. Also, I bet you he can hit a three or two in practice and didn’t feel like this was strapping a bomb on the Laker’s chance for a W. The reaction of Brown was a little over the top (but defendable, given the percieved battle for dominance with the locker room) and the fans and media blew it up. There is no real problem, just a challenge for the team’s staff. Same with Kobe. Same with Pau. Same with MWP. Same with (you get the picture).

@ mooney you’re right, he is shaping up to be a prima donna

    kholiday FTW!!!!!!!!!!

I love Andrew Bizarro. He’s the anti-Dwight: doesn’t give a flying fack what anyone thinks of him.

  • GQ

    LOL @ Mooney10 ‘pre-madonna’

  • http://Juanm.garcia@comcast.net KingsWithRings

Bynum will be dominating your punk teams center so I can understand the jealousy mascaraded as “Bynum Pre-Madanna” rhetoric. Admit the truth. Phil’s right and you wish you had him.

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

@Mooney10 – Totally. Look at how much more mature Rodman was after dating Madonna. Bynum needs to Vogue a little.

  • Justin G.

Maybe that’s one of the reasons guys should stay in school longer. Gain some maturity and work on your game. For every Tim Duncan there’s probably 10 Bynums as far as professionalism and maturity level

    Lol @ Ugh
