Post Up: Call Me Carmelo

Melo’s heroics ruin DRose’s return, LBJ leads MIA and San Antonio wins No. 11 in a row.

by Abe Schwadron | @abe_squad

Another Sunday Funday to recap, so grab that Monday morning cup of coffee and warm up the typing fingers. Let’s get it.

Knicks 100, Bulls 99 (OT)

What a game. Derrick Rose was finally back in uniform after missing 12 games due to injury, and the Bulls and Knicks squared off in what could be a first-round Playoff matchup. The Knicks took a 21-point lead in the first quarter, only to see it become a 10-point deficit by the fourth quarter—good thing New York had Carmelo Anthony on its side. Melo finished with 43 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists in 47 minutes, getting every big bucket for the Knicks all game long. None bigger than these two, though—first, he forces OT with a three. Then, he finishes the game off with an eerily similar trey, outdueling a rusty DRose (29 points, but on 8-26 shooting) in a game when both teams shot sub-40 percent from the floor.

Celtics 103, Sixers 79

It’s hard to say which team this result says more about—the surging Celtics or the slipping Sixers? Rajon Rondo’s 15 assists marked the 17th straight game in which he’s racked up double-digit dimes, and his passing opened up the floor for the Cs to shoot 59 percent from the field (Philly shot just 38 percent). Kevin Garnett scored 20 points on just 11 shots to lead all scorers, even while he played only 27 minutes. Meanwhile, the Sixers’ typical “balanced” scoring attack saw just 3 players in double figures, led by Nikola Vucevic’s 14 points and 13 rebounds. Philly has now lost 4 in a row, this time to the team they once held a healthy lead over in the Atlantic Division. As of today, Boston sits in the 4-spot in the East, while Philadelphia is the 8-seed, trailed by only one game by Milwaukee.

Heat 98, Pistons 75

No Dwyane Wade, no problem. DWade sat out with a sprained ankle, and LeBron James and Chris Bosh responded as they always do by carrying the Heat to a win. LeBron finished with 26 points on 12-22 shooting, Bosh had 22 points and 9 rebounds and James Jones chipped in a career-high 18 off the bench (yes, all on 6 three-pointers) as Miami won its 12th game in the last 13 against Detroit. The Heat are now an NBA-best 24-3 at home and, yes…10-1 without Wade. How terrible did the Pistons play against the vaunted Miami D? As a team, they piled up 22 turnovers and just 8 assists. That’s pretty terrible. The least terrible Piston was Brandon Knight, who scored 16 points. Greg Monroe had 11 points on 5-8 shooting—can we get this dude some more touches, for the love of Pete.

Nets 122, Cavaliers 117 (OT)

Gerald Green scored 32 points—a season-high and one point shy of his career-high—in leading the Nets to what was an unexpectedly thrilling showdown of Lottery teams in Newark. Not to be outdone, Antawn Jamison poured in 34 points of his own for the Cavaliers, but with ROY favorite Kyrie Irving still nursing a right shoulder injury, Cleveland didn’t have the will to win in OT. How did they get there? Check out the last 30 seconds of regulation for some craziness:

The Nets scored the first four points of overtime and never looked back. Green threw down a nasty alley-oop dunk from Deron Williams (18 points, 10 rebounds) to put the finishing touches on a New Jersey win—the Nets are just 9-19 at home this year.

Spurs 114, Jazz 104

San Antonio is quietly becoming a monster. Consider this: they blew past Utah with relative ease, riding 28 points from Tony Parker and 51 percent shooting as a team—all with Boris Diaw in the starting lineup (DeJuan Blair cannot be happy about this). Manu Ginobili added 23 points and Tim Duncan had 13 points and 16 boards as the Spurs won their 11th straight game as they sit atop the West. The only thing crazier than that streak is that it happens to be the second such stint that the Spurs have rattled off already this year. San Antonio outshot the Jazz from the free throw line (38-43 to 16-26) and held Paul Millsap to a dreadful 2 points on 1-8 shooting and 3 rebounds. As if Utah—now on the outside looking in at the Playoff picture—needed more bad news, CJ Miles left in the second quarter with a calf injury and did not return.

Thunder 92, Raptors 75

Kevin Durant scored 23 points and James Harden’s 17 led a 40 to 21 bench scoring advantage for Oklahoma City as the Thunder beat down the Raptors to snap a season-high 3-game losing streak. Russell Westbrook added 15 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists and Serge Ibaka notched his 16th 5-block game of the year as the Thunder improved to 24-5 at home and are in a virtual tie with San Antonio for the top spot in the Western Conference. Durant led a 24-0 second-half run that spelled doom for Toronto, which was led in scoring by Jose Calderon’s 19 points. Unfortunately, DeMar Derozan was 6-22 from the floor (16 points), James Johnson was 2-11 (5 points) and the Raps as a team shot a dysmal 37 percent on field goals.

Rockets 104, Kings 87

Houston is now 7-3 over its last 10 games after completing the season sweep of Sacramento behind 17 first-quarter points from Courtney Lee, who finished with a season-high 25. Perhaps even more encouraging than the big win for the Rockets was the return of Kyle Lowry, who played 18 minutes and dished out 7 assists (only 1 point) while regaining his strength, zapped from a serious bacterial infection. Houston led most of the way in this one, and while the Kings ended the third quarter on a 16-4 run, the red-hot Rockets were simply too much on the offensive end, sharing the ball to the tune of 29 team dimes. Terrence Williams continued his stellar play of late, leading SacTown in scoring with 21 points—but Tyreke Evans (3-7 shooting, 6 points, 1 assist) and DeMarcus Cousins (4-8, 9 points, 8 rebounds) struggled.

Line of the Night: Melo’s 43 for the Knickerbockers.

Stat of the Night: The aforementioned Boris Diaw now has more wins while a member of the Spurs (9) than his entire season prior to now with the Bobcats (7).

Dunk of the Night: Derrick Favors on Tiago Splitter. Duck for cover, San Antonio.

Tonight: Ten games on tap, including Clippers-Grizzlies, Spurs-Jazz and a Lottery matchup for the ages as the Bobcats host the Wizards. See you back here in 24.

Doesn’t change the fact that he still only made 8 of 26 to get 29 points.

  • Old Long Johnson

@T-Ray: No doubt about that one, bulls will win a close one tomorrow.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Comparing Rose to Starbury is a disgrace to Rose and all he has accomplished so far in his short career. Was Starbury ever the best player on a 60+ win team? Did starbury ever come close to winning the MVP? Was Starbury even half the leader/teammate Rose is? Come on now, I’m not even the biggest Rose fan around here and I feel the need to defend him.

  • LA Huey

Knicks-Bulls was a great game but I’d bet that it was Rust that was locking down Rose and not Shumpert. That being said, I’ll take the Bulls +10 over Knicks on Tuesday. I love these home-and-home games, I wish the league did more of them. Particularly conference rivals, and ESPECIALLY division rivals.

  • LA Huey

JTaylor, I think they were just comparing style of play. Not stature.

  • http://nba.com GP23

I like Derrick Rose and I love his game… but JTaylor21′s comment at 10:11 is spot on.

  • ALD

id know why ppl insit on talking about the mpv award because it clearyly does not mean most valuable player.. Plus the award should be givn before the finals imo.

Rose missed that same shot last year against Lebron. he needs to fix that stepback and make it his goto move.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Oh…ok. Still, I don’t see the Starbury-Rose comparison. Rose’s better at finishing around the basket, better mid-range and has the ability to carry teams further in the playoffs than Starbury. There hasn’t been a PG like Rose in the history of basketball, his athletic abilities and skills are only comparable to Westbrook.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

T-Ray what do you think of Shump’s defense? I beleive Shump right now is a better defender than both Tony Allen and Rajon Rondo…

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

I remember a slam article where Rose said he loved Steve Francis, now in terms of accomplishments Rose is climbing the ladder so fast it’s hard to compare him to alot of people even though they have a larger body of work when it comes to games played. I do think Rose is more athletic than Iverson though.

i think westbrookis more athletic than rose.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

You believe a rookie (albeit a very good defender) is already better than the best perimeter defender in the NBA? This is why no one takes knick fans and their basketball “knowledge” seriously.

  • http://www.michaeljordansworld.com/statistics/triple_doubles.htm nbk

    right

  • http://scores.espn.go.com/nba/shotchart?gameId=320404014 Allenp

There are only like six players int he League averaging 8 or more assists. Rose is fine.
He was rusty, he shot too much and his burst was lacking. It only means something if his burst isn’t there in the playoffs, otherwise he played like 99 percent of players coming off a long lay off.
Shumpert does play great defense though. He also takes horrible shots.
The bigger problem was that the ball stuck in Rose’s hands and all that great ball movement and player movement I saw out of Chicago for weeks just disappeared. That is what made them dangerous, but as soon as Rose came back they went back to just standing and crashing the boards. If they play aggressively it only makes Rose MORE dangerous.
The Spurs appear awesome. But I just can’t shake my doubt. And Tony Parker is having a nice year, and there is a precedent of point guards winning MVP with middling stats (Nash) but I don’t see it happening for him. None of his numbers are eye popping and he’s shooting one of his worst shooting percentages in years, although it’s still stellar for most players.
    Fat Lever
Why don’t you like Jrue? And you’re ready to fire Collins already?

  • bike

There are more people who complain about Knicks fans on here than there are actual Knick fans. It’s worth noting.

  • http://nba.com GP23

The Phoenix Suns have done a great job since the ASG break. They are nearly at that 8th spot now. Before the ASG, the Suns being in Playoff contention seemed ludicrous, so respect goes to them if they can get that 8th seed. Steve Nash is still a Top 5 PG in the league today.

  • http://scores.espn.go.com/nba/shotchart?gameId=320404014 Allenp

Knicks fans should be happy. Their team looked dead in the water, and now they are sitting at seventh and could still rise since who knows what the hell Orlando and Philly are doing.
So, they could get a first round matchup against Indiana, a matchup they have to have some confidence in, right?
So basically, if they keep winning they could go from lottery team, to a second round playoff appearance. That would be a success no matter how you slice it. Of course, they could also squander their current momentum and go on a losing streak to miss the playoffs.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qNzF0mZUPI&feature=youtu.be MeloManTO

Thanks a lot orange…. appreciate the support from a fellow knicks fan

  • bike

    They’ll squander it. Guaranteed.

  • http://scores.espn.go.com/nba/shotchart?gameId=320404014 Allenp

    Top 5?
    Hmmm.
    Rose
    Paul
    Deron
    Parker
    Westbrook
    Rondo
    Nash
Now, of the six cats above Nash, who would you bump? I can possibly see Rondo and Westbrook for different reasons. So he might be able to squeak in.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Rondo has to be above Nash given just how dominant he has been since the AS break

  • Sizzle

Derrick “I choke on the foul line” Rose

  • Fat Lever

Allen, I know you’re high on Jrue, but he has regressed this season. He has the offensive skills to be a 18ppg scorer consistently, but far too many times he lacks aggression. As a PG his assist numbers are atrocious, considering he isn’t an aggressive offensive player. I watch every Sixer game and I fully expected him to take over as the primary or one of the top 2 offensive players on the team this year. It was there for the taking, and he let it slip.

As far as Doug, the way he has handled ET this year and his complete lack of offensive scheme in the 4th Q of close games tells me he is not good at adjusting as the game moves along. Far too many times he has allowed BOSS(Lou Will) to iso to win/tie the game when the other team knows exactly what’s coming. He throws all of the offensive movement he preaches in the beginning of games out the window in the 4th Q. And his record in games decided by 7 points or less, more or less, typifies this.

Doug has also completely mismanaged Evan Turner, to the point that we’re wondering here if he has a real disdain for him as a person. ET’s strengths are bringing up the ball, initiating the offense, yet Doug doesn’t play to that. He’s the #2 pick, you have to see what you have! At least give ET the opportunity to fail. And god forbid if Evan makes one mistake on the court, he gets yanked. However Jrue can make the same mistakes over and over with no ramifications.

  • http://www.michaeljordansworld.com/statistics/triple_doubles.htm nbk

Sounds like Doug Collins values defense more than offense.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

JPriceless21, yes I am saying Iman Shumpert is playing at an NBA All-Defensive Team level.

  • Fat Lever

And to be honest, if it comes down to Jrue or ET, I’d side with ET, because he has shown flashes of what he’s capable of. I like Jrue, he seems like a good kid, but he disappears from time to time.

  • http://scores.espn.go.com/nba/shotchart?gameId=320404014 Allenp

    Fat Lever
I actually agree with you completely. On everything you said, particularly about how Collins handled Turner. Don’t forget the Speights debacle too.

  • http://scores.espn.go.com/nba/shotchart?gameId=320404014 Allenp

I feel like Jrue hasn’t made up his mind what he’s going to be as a point guard. Collins should let Turner be the on ball decision maker and let Jrue be the shot maker/ part-time decision maker. The Harden/Westbrook playbook but with less shooting by Jrue. And they should have traded Igoudla.

  • Fat Lever

Agreed. Doug should have started ET at point, and told Jrue he’s got the green light to shoot and be aggressive. ET is the only guy on this team that can create offense for others. When the Sixers get into a rut offensively, Doug will leave Jodie Meeks out there to brick 3′s away when you need more of a creator. The Sixers need a young, “outside the box” thinking coach.

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/tray24 T-Ray

Orange I think for a rookie he is a good defender. He often let’s his man blow by then reaches but Allen keeps his in front of him. But give him a few seasons and he’ll be the best perimeter defender in the league.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

Great win for the Knicks yesterday. Made my m*thaf*ckin weekend! But now with all this talk about Shumpert holding down Rose, you KNOW Rose is going to go out tomorrow night to make a statement. Hopefully Shumpert is able to answer dunn. But true that, had Lebron made all those mistakes that Rose made… it would be the top topic of the day…

  • LA Huey

    co-sign everything O just stated.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

IAFUSCHIA4EVER , you said nothing about Shump making the all-defensive team, you said he’s a better defender than TAllen. Now I agree with former but the former deserves no response.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

    *the latter*

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

I am no JTaylor21, but I’d choose Shump in the “blink of an eye” over Tony Allen.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

    ;)

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

Shumpert’s a good defender, but you Knicks fans have another thing coming if you think he’s a better defender than Allen or Rondo.

  • Doug

Woah MeloManTO, that video gave me goosebumps… Slam should post it

  • http://larrybrownsports.com/basketball/lebron-james-played-superb-defense-on-derrick-rose/70485 nbk

Shumpert is a very good defender. But he’s not in the best perimeter defender in the league conversation yet.

  • http://scores.espn.go.com/nba/shotchart?gameId=320404014 Allenp

If Melo had shot threes like that for Mike D, he’d still have a job.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

Shump is a great defender, but yeah, he’s not in the “best perimeter defender in the L” convo yet.
And before you chalk that up to me being a Knicks hater, Orange, keep in mind I was a Shumpert fan since before you knew he existed.
Rose was rusty, sure, but this is AT LEAST the third time he’s choked at the line in a big game in his career.
    Some cause for concern there.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

Yeah I’d hate to see Rose make that a habit.

  • LA Huey

Rose is just perfecting what fellow Nick Anderson started. It’s a Chicago thing.

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/tray24 T-Ray

Rose choking at the line could be a huge problem come playoff time because the play is more physical and he’s a guy that demands a lot of contact near the rim. I find it funny people have hinted on here today that if it were LeBron the conversation would be much different.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

    LOL @ LA Huey.
Even more specifically, it’s a Simeon High School thing.
Better perimeter defender – Iman Shumpert or Avery Bradley?

  • http://scores.espn.go.com/nba/shotchart?gameId=320404014 Allenp

    Good question.
I really like Bradley. I might bump him up over Jrue Holiday as far as point guard defenders at this point.
I like Shumpert too. He reaches a little too much. Then again, his reaching makes offensive players uncomfortable. I can’t really say which one is better. Neither of them is Tony Allen.

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/tray24 T-Ray

Avery Bradley that guy hawks the hell out of his man.

  • Cool Dude

lol schumpert better than Trick o Treat Allen. Irrational Knicks fans are funny.

  • bike

Oh please, if people weren’t making comments about the lack of flack Rose gets for things like this in comparison to LBJ no one else would’ve initiated it. If it was Lebron, who most of ya’ll love to hate on, it would’ve been the first few comments. I find it funny that Enigmatic is the only Rose fan that doesn’t have Rose’s sac in his mouth.
