Post Up: Not So Fast

Chicago takes down the Knicks without DRose, Boston stumps Miami yet again and more.

by Abe Schwadron | @abe_squad

Welcome to the Wednesday morning Post Up. Where else can you digest a 6-pack before 9 o’clock in the morning?

Wizards 93, Magic 85

Your eyes are not deceiving you. My Wizards did in fact beat the Magic, behind career-highs in points (24) and rebounds (13) from Kevin Seraphin who also tied a personal best with 4 blocked shots. Of course, Dwight Howard’s absence made things a bit easier for Kev, but it’s not the Washington’s fault that Howard’s sore back was enough to keep him out—I’m guessing he as just so scared of Seraphin he refused to get dressed. Of the Magic players who did in fact suit up, Jameer Nelson was the best, scoring 19 points and dishing out 7 dimes. But John Wall outplayed him, scoring 15 points an dialing up 7 assists of his own while wreaking havoc on the break and helping his Wiz teammates shoot 50 percent from the floor. Jordan Crawford (21 points) delivered the dagger on a 3-pointer with just over a minute to play, on a pass from—who else—Wall.

Celtics 115, Heat 107

Rajon Rondo had 10+ assists for the 18th straight game, this time finishing with 15 dimes to go with 18 points, and the Celtics overcame a 36-point effort from LeBron James (who added 7 rebounds and 7 assists on the evening) to deal Miami just its fourth home loss of the year. Boston went on a 16-2 run to end the first quarter and Miami gave up 65 first-half points to the Celtics—the most they’ve given up before halftime all year. And even after the Heat got back to within single-digits, the Celtics responded by hitting their first 8 shots of the fourth quarter. Yet again, Dwyane Wade (20 points) cut the Beantown lead to 5 with just over 2 minutes remaining, but Kevin Garnett played the role of closer, putting the finishing touches on his 24-point, 9-rebound night to send the Heat home unhappy campers. Paul Pierce’s 27 points led the Cs, who shot an absolutely insane 61 percent from the field as a team—a season-high.

Cavaliers 103, Bobcats 90

The life of a Bobcats fan has been bad all season, but seeing Luke Walton play 20 minutes, dish out 4 dimes and help ignite a crucial 10-0 run to start the fourth quarter as the Cavaliers took down Charlotte without Kyrie Irving in uniform has to be damn near rock bottom. Not to mention the fact that Lester Hudson led all scorers with 25 points, along with his 8 rebounds and 6 assists. The ‘Cats have now lost 13 straight games, this one while being out-boarded 45 to 32. Gerald Henderson (21 points) and Kemba Walker (20) tried their darndest to get the W, but Corey Maggette had other thoughts (perhaps ping-pong related) as he shot 1-7 and scored 4 points in his rousing 16 minutes.

Sixers 107, Nets 88

It’s not stealing if I’m the guy who wrote it, right? Here goes: Lou Williams, Spencer Hawes and Thaddeus Young came off the bench to spark the Sixers, who snapped a four-game losing streak by beating the Nets in blowout fashion, 107-88. Williams finished with 20 points, eight rebounds and five assists, while Hawes and Young each scored 19 points and grabbed eight boards. The Sixers opened up an 18-point lead in a decisive third quarter during which Williams and Hawes each had eight, and Philadelphia’s lead swelled to as many as 23 in the fourth. Nets forward Kris Humphries finished with a team-high 20 points and 10 rebounds in a losing effort.

Mavericks 110, Kings 100

Win No. 1 without Lamar Odom? Check. The Champs are 32-26 and have shed the weight that was LO, for better or worse. In his absence, Dallas played total team ball, as 6 players finished with double-digit scoring nights, and 10 guys scored at least 7 points. Dirk Nowitzki had the highest total with 15 points, but Shawn Marion’s 14 rebounds (to go with 10 points) were more important—the Matrix terrorized the Kings on the boards with 6 offensive rebounds. Even with DeMarcus Cousins going ham to the tune of 25 points, 18 rebounds, 3 assists and a career-high 6 steals, Sacramento was still outrebounded by a 56 to 40 margin. The Kings have lost 5 in a row, while the Mavs are now just a half-game back of Houston for the 6-seed out West.

Bulls 98, Knicks 86

In a rematch of Sunday’s overtime thriller, which the Knicks won, the Bulls were without Derrick Rose. Luckily, Richard Hamilton was healthy for once—he scored 18 of Chicago’s 25 third-quarter points and finished with 20, plus 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Rip and the hustling Bulls scored 25 second-chance points to just 5 for the Knicks, thanks in large part to 51-33 rebounding advantage. Tyson Chandler was the only man rebounding for the Knicks (15 boards, 10 points) while Carmelo Anthony handled the offense, with 29 points, but got little help from the rest of New York’s roster. Luol Deng scored 19 points and had 10 rebounds, Kyle Korver dropped 14 and the Bulls opened up a full 3-game lead on Miami for the top spot in the East. Oh, and the Knicks bench was atrocious.

Line of the Night: Miami took the L, but Mr. James delivered a tidy 36-7-7 line in defeat.

Dunk of the Night: Plenty of rim wreckage on Tuesday night, but here were the 3 best, according to yours truly—Iggy gets up for the oop, Vinsanity dials up the time machine and LeBron and Wade hook up per usual.

Tonight: ESPN brings you a suddenly imminent Playoff race matchup between the Knicks and Bucks before Warriors-Blazers wraps up their doubleheader. Elsewhere, 9 more games including Clippers-Thunder and Spurs-Lakers.

JT, I know. He’s only had to bump heads with Parker but even then, TP probably fell in line as he matured and realized Duncan’s way better and allows Pop to rip him a new one.

“I heard what Chris Bosh said, and that’s strong words coming from the RuPaul of big men,” O’Neal said. “I’m going to do the same thing (in their next meeting) I did before – make him quit. Make ‘em quit and complain. It’s what I do.” That insult was lobbed by Shaq due to Chris Bosh having a reputation in the “L” for being a soft big man. As for Skip Bayless calling Chris Bosh by the nickname Bosh Spice, it was clearly over the soft label Chris Bosh had earned at the time. On one hand you have Shaq (a player at the time) comparing Chris Bosh’s game to a transsexual pop singer-songwriter, and on the other hand you have a sports journalist comparing Bosh’s to David Beckham’s wife Victoria Beckham, who was dubbed “Posh Spice” while she was a singer with the all-female pop group Spice Girls. The question I have for you AllenP, is which one of these insults “cuts to the core” of Bosh having a rep as a soft big man in the NBA. Which one is more “perfect,” Allenp? I ask because I just got done reading your comments back on Mach 2nd, 2009 at 12:11 pm.

nbk, well, Miami would have if LeBron would have tried.

Man LeBron crumbled, he tried, he just crumbled mentally. Still though, by acting like Miami lost that series rather than acknowledging that Dallas earned their win we are not giving enough credit to Dallas for what they did. That team was a wrecking ball. They swept the defending champs for goodness sake.

Calling a man woman is an insult and is unprofessional for a journalist.
If you don’t see this, then you don’t want to see it. This has nothing to do with Shaq or what he said.
Bayless called another man a woman multiple times on television. If your beef is with Jalen being unprofessional, then Bayless is the wrong person to be defending. He has been unprofessional for years.

  • http://scores.espn.go.com/nba/shotchart?gameId=320404014 Allenp

Doc hasn’t had the sort of teams that Pop or Jackson have had.
He took the Celtics to the championship the first year of the Big Three and in doing so go two non-defenders to buy in defensively, and made suitable players out of two young players who had massive holes int heir games.
The next year he loses the heart of his team, and still manages to get some good victories in the regular season in playoffs.
The next year with his best player still hobbled, he gets to the Finals despite a lackluster regular season and is a Kendrick Perkins injury away from another ring.
He motivated that ridiculously untalented Orlando team to compete for a playoff spot back in the day with Darrell Armstrong as his best player.
I don’t understand how you keep giving credit to a man who no longer coaches a team. Thibs has been gone for a while now. The Celtics still play great defense. That means Doc has to hold them accountable and make adjustments. Hell, who played better defense against the Heat, Chicago or Boston?

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVFSfRVzQ8s nbk

Boston right now (well since they switched KG over to Center), is playing better defense then they ever did under Tom Thibodeau. I mean that has a lot to do with Garnett and Avery Bradley, but still that is something too consider. Plus, Doc Rivers is a genius at drawing up a play, he’s the best “out of a timeout” coach in the league. Which I think speaks volumes for his basketball IQ and ability to read a situation… Doc is a top 5 coach in the league.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

LeBron didn’t try. He had the same look/demeanor at times during that series he had during the GM5 debacle against BOS in ’10. When LeBron is “trying” he’s attaking the rim and getting to the Line (he only attempted 20FTAs during that 6gm series).

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Yeah he did do that with Orlando. Yeah Celtics are still a great defensive team. Yes everyone agrees, Doc=Great Coach. Your the only one I have ever seen to say that people say he isn’t. Do you have an article or comment someone posted negating Doc for the amazing coach he is?
Oh and please everyone, never say that the Celtics were a Perkins injury away from a championship. STFU. Celtics lost fair and square. We don’t know what the outcome would have been either way. Your not going to see me on here always claiming that if the Lakers only had a healthy Bynum over the past 5 years they would have a 4-Peat right now… Celtics lost that year, Lakers won. Like the Mavs won last year. No need to downgrade an accomplishment because your not a fan of a team or player.

  • ALD

Until the heat fix their pick n roll defense, their championships dream will remain dreams. With the fact that on offense wade and lebron look at eachother to see who makes a move… What is wron with Coach Spo?

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

What makes you say that nbk? As far as the Celts being better defensively now than ever before? That I don’t go for. Not because of Thibs not being there, but these dudes are much older now and aren’t nearly as spry as they were a few years ago and they were playing some of the best defense I had ever seen a couple years back. Perk isn’t a huge loss, but he did clog th emiddle well for them. Celtics D, 07-09 > 10-12 IMO

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Taylor your saying Bron gave up in the finals??! Whoa man. Not sure about that. I have more faith than that in dude. No way. No NBA legend gives up in the Finals.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVFSfRVzQ8s nbk

LeBron over thought the situation. It was purely a mental implosion. Trying to force the issue was not going to change how he was playing. He was trying, he just didn’t know what to do. our definition of trying is just different, I know he wasn’t doing what he normally does or should have been, but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t trying to figure out how to. I don’t think he just gave up and said “f*ck it” – he genuinely just didn’t know what to do.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Chicago played better D because Wade/Bron went off against BOS while Bosh struggled. Against CHI, Wade struggled immensely while Bron and Bosh excelled.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

nbk, everything you said about Doc at 3:21 is pretty much indisputable fact. Does anyone on here not think Doc is a great coach and a top 5 in the L right now? Taking a poll here, cause i’m pretty sure everyone agrees he is.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVFSfRVzQ8s nbk

: When Bradley and Garnett play together, Boston gives up 88.8 points per 100 possessions, allows 38.8 percent shooting and forces nearly one turnover for every assist.
: When Rondo and Bradley play together, opponents average 82.2 points per 100 possessions. That’s nearly 20 points below the league average.
    espn.**.***/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/40441/avery-bradley-matters-now

  • ALD

@Jtaylor how did lebron not try? Not trying is one of the most overused phrases in sports. If he ‘s not trying why is he playing. Lebron lost confidence and is was seen everywhere. He teamed up with dwade and bosh to win and probably take less shots most nights. Plus nobody is giving defenses credit anymore , Lebron is great but he is not Unstopable.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/online/nba/2009/03/shaqs-nickname-for-chris-bosh-rupaul/ IAMORANGE4EVER

Dear nbk, YOU are the LAST person on SLAM to tell anyone whether they know what is or isn’t professional. Why? YOUR actions here at SLAM have shown you yourself are NOT a professional. You are a wannabe hoops journalist here at SLAM who tends to lose his cool with those who don’t play by his rules in his little mental sandbox….As for me, I’m just here for fun/entertainment. I love the NBA and discussing hoops with my fellow hoops junkies. If someone says something I disagree with, I agree to disagree without being disagreeable. It’s that easy!

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Lake, I wouldn’t go that far but he wet the bed worse than my 3rd old nephew in the Finals. There’s no other way to explain just what the hell he was doing/thinking out there. How can you go from dominating 2 of the best defenses in the NBA to struggling and playing hot potato with the rock while guarded by JKidd and JJ Barea? That has to be the biggest unsolved mystery since Chappelle walked away from 50 mill.

Allenp, you said “calling a man woman is an insult and is unprofessional for a journalist,” Where did Skip Bayless call Chris Bosh a woman? He gave him the nickname Bosh Spice because he played soft as a big man. Did he call him Bosh Spice during the playoff last year? Nope. Now that Shaq

Perkins getting injured in the Finals was just karma from the Basketball Gods. If you recall, he was 1 technical foul away from a suspension. Perk made a deal with the devil to transplant his personality and the Gods were aware.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/online/nba/2009/03/shaqs-nickname-for-chris-bosh-rupaul/ IAMORANGE4EVER

Allenp, you said “calling a man woman is an insult and is unprofessional for a journalist,” When did Skip Bayless say Chris Bosh was in fact a woman? He gave him the nickname “Bosh Spice” because he played soft. Posh Spice…Bosh Spice. It was funny. Just as funny as RuPaul. The difference between Shaq and Skip is Skip gave Bosh his props last year in the playoffs and didn’t call him Bosh Spice anymore. Riles should put Skip on the payroll man…lol. Skip even met Bosh face to face on First Take! Shaq, who played the game, and is now in sports media with TNT, still is disrespecting Bosh by calling the Heat the “Big 2.” LMAO

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-talk/2011 Diesel

nbk – So you’re entire basis for saying the Boston Celtics are a better defensive team now is rooted in convoluted statistics that average out per 100 possessions a scenario that rarely happens? Avery has been starting for like what, 10 games now? And him and KG are on the floor together for like 15 minutes total…and you have the nerve to average those statistics out across 100 possessions and try to compare them against season averages of the entire team while Thibs was the assistant coach? That’s a hell of a reach.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Diesel bringing the common sense on these days.

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-talk/2011 Diesel

When Doc coached at Orlando, he never got out of the first round of the playoffs. In fact they epically collapsed in 2003 after being up 3 games to 1 in the first round of the playoffs and eventually lost to the Pistons in 7. When he moved to Boston, he underachieved with a decent team. Then finally he was graced with 3 hall of famers and Tom Thibodeau as an assistant coach. Even as he coached the Celtics to the championship in 2008, it took them a record setting number of games to do so, with far and away the most talented roster in the league. And all through that run, the defense was winning them games…they beat the Cavs averaging 84 points per game and the Pistons averaging 91 points per game. I use these examples to show that Doc is nowhere near Pop’s level. Pop has won championships with teams less talented than the 2009 – 2011 Celtics. I 100% agree though that Doc is a good coach and top 3 or 4 in the league now.

  • http://larrybrownsports.com/basketball/lebron-james-played-superb-defense-on-derrick-rose/70485 nbk

Him and KG have played 656 minutes together. And no my opinion is not solely based on stats. But If I didn’t use stats to illustrate my opinion I would be just telling a story. Stats are nice because they are supporting proof of something

  • http://scores.espn.go.com/nba/shotchart?gameId=320404014 Allenp

Like I said, calling him Bosh Spice is calling him a woman.
He’s calling him a Spice Girl.
First of all, it’s unprofessional for a journalist to be running around insulting people and calling them names. Second, it’s unprofessional to compare a man to a woman as an insult.
If you don’t think Bosh Spice was a way of calling Bosh a woman, then there is really nothing to discuss. Like I said earlier, you don’t want to see it. Fine.

  • http://larrybrownsports.com/basketball/lebron-james-played-superb-defense-on-derrick-rose/70485 nbk

And I didn’t say they are a better overall defense then the teams Thibs coached, I said right now, since KG moved to Center, showing Rivers has the ability to make productive adjustments even defensively. Way to take my comment out of context though.

  • http://scores.espn.go.com/nba/shotchart?gameId=320404014 Allenp

Popovich has never won a championship without Tim Duncan at full strength.
    Ever.
Garnett has been the most important and arguably best player on the Celtics team his entire tenure.
Garnett was fully healthy one year, they one a championship. He was injured and recovering from that injury the next two years. The got to the second round without him and got the Finals with him playing on one leg.
Last year, the lost in the second round to Miami after Rondo dislocated his elbow or whatever he did.
The same year, Popovich lost in the first round to Memphis. Despite having his core together, Pop hasn’t been to the Finals since 2007.
As for epic collapses, have you pulled the roster on that Orlando team that lost to Detroit? Did you check the figures on what everyone outside of McGrady averaged? The fact that they were up 3-1, which tied directly to Detroit’s unwillingness to double and triple team McGrady until later in the series was a testament to both McGrady and Doc. Drew Gooden was the second leading scorer on that team in the playoffs!
Look at the roster starting in 1999. Consider that roster and the fact that his team was never below .500. Check out the defensive ratings for those teams, it’s all available on basketball reference.
Explain how those early Boston teams underachieved? Underachieved based on what metric?

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

I don’t think Diesel was calling you out nbk, just saying that that is a sample size compared to entire portions we have seen. Obviously Doc at least recognizes defensive talent. Other coaches wouldn’t care if they had Thibs on their bench they would just do things their way. So he’s obviously a smart cat by utilizing Thibs and also keeping some of the ideas that he helped him implement with the team.

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-talk/2011 Diesel

I’m not saying don’t use stats, but to average out stats per 100 possessions like that is a stretch.

  • http://larrybrownsports.com/basketball/lebron-james-played-superb-defense-on-derrick-rose/70485 nbk

100 possessions is an average game.

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-talk/2011 Diesel

I’m not taking your comment out of context, I’m just saying its a stretch to average out across 100 possessions something like “when 2 guys are on the court together”. That’s like taking the bench player that goes all out for the 4 minutes he’s on the floor and grabs 4 rebounds…you can’t say per 48 minutes, this dude would average 48 rebounds a game.

@LakeShow, thanks man, lol. :) @AllenP I have no horse in this race. I see what was said. I never came to the conclusion Skip Bayless was saying Chris Bosh was a woman or questioning his sexuality. Skip’s nickname was all about Chris Bosh the NBA player, not the person. Skip was not questioning Chris Bosh’s sexuality ala nbk insinuating Richard Jefferson is bisexual last December 19th at 4:31pm. Click my name, and search for nbk’s comment. Just because nbk ended his comment with “nothing too “confirm” it though” doesn’t make it any less personal/professional. nbk came off more unprofessional/personal than Skip Bayless calling Chris Bosh by the nickname Bosh Spice. I respect Skip Bayless, because he puts himself out there, and meets those he criticizes in sports face-to-face. He doesn’t just hide behind his keyboard or microphone. Skip’s a man, he’s 60! Shout out to Mike Gundy for that.

NBK isn’t a journalist. It’s no unprofessional, it’s disrespectful when a regular person does it.
As a journalist, you should be lying to make yourself look better, and you shouldn’t be lobbing personal insults at dude’s that revolve around their sexuality. You just shouldn’t.
I can’t explain this any other way. That’s not acceptable behavior. It’s not professional. That’s Media Ethics 101

Uhh, duhhh Orange. Knicks vs Lakers Finals of course…

Orange you realize I’m a commenter on the Internet right? I don’t get paid for what I say. All of what I say is opinion, and millions of people don’t read what I say or watch me give my opinion. There is nothing professional involved with my Slam name nbk and it relates in absolutely no way to my career. I can lie and lie and lie on here (which I don’t do but regardless) it isn’t going to influence the thoughts and opinions of an entire nation of people. If Skip Bayless is going to be on the most popular sports channel in the country lying to his customers then it’s completely appropriate for another professional in the same field to set the story straight. You can waste time sifting through all the comments I have ever made on slamonline, I’m sure you can find something more unprofessional then my Richard Jefferson comment, but it really just doesn’t prove anything. I’ve already told you I don’t give a sh*t how I’m perceived by anyone here, this is nothing more than a place I express my opinion and argue nothing professional to even care about. So keep proving I am not a professional while you defend a proven liar. That sounds like a lot of entertainment and fun. And it’s not pointless at all

  • http://larrybrownsports.com/basketball/lebron-james-played-superb-defense-on-derrick-rose/70485 nbk

And you can go back and read what I said about Richard Jefferson, I didn’t insult him. I said what I had heard about him and told a story that I found funny, that really had nothing to do with his sexuality and I inappropriately linked the two together. It was wrong, but ultimately it was just a mistake I made that doesnt really affect anything.
