Post Up: The Countdown

Phoenix stays alive, Miami beats Chicago and time is running out for the Rockets and Bucks.

by Abe Schwadron | @abe_squad

There is officially one full week of regular season basketball left to play. Strap in.

Pacers 118, Bucks 109

On the same night Indiana clinched home-court advantage in the first round of the Playoffs, the Bucks took yet another step back in their attempt to steal the No. 8 seed from Philadelphia. David West played his butt off, finishing with 21 points, 14 rebounds and 7 assists (one a pinpoint full-court pass), while Danny Granger and George Hill packed the scoring punch, combining for 51 points. Brandon Jennings had 27 points to lead the Bucks, but he and Monta Ellis shot a combined 13-37 form the floor. Milwaukee lost its third straight game and now sits 3 full games behind the Sixers. Larry Sanders, for one, doesn’t seem happy about it:

Timberwolves 91, Pistons 80

Minnesota snapped an 11-game losing streak, leading from start to finish and by as many as 23 behind Nikola Pekovic’s 23 points and double-doubles from JJ Barea (13 points, 12 assists) and Anthony Randolph (15 points, 10 rebounds). The Wolves held Detroit to 37 percent shooting—a good number considering the Pistons missed their final 10 shots of the first quarter and shot 29 percent in the first half. Tayshaun Prince scored a team-high 18 points, but it was at the point guard spot where Lawrence Frank would probably like to have last night’s playing time decisions back. Brandon Knight started, played 28 minutes and shot just 2-12 from the field with 5 points and only 1 assist, while Will Bynum’s 12 late minutes produced 17 points and nearly got the Pistons back into the game.

Hornets 105, Rockets 99

With New Orleans leading by 1 and under 30 seconds to play, it looked like a Chase Budinger (22 points) missed jumper would wrap up a rare Hornets win and send the Rockets to a crushing sixth straight L. But Courtney Lee caught Greivis Vasquez napping on the defensive rebound, stole the ball, got fouled with 15 seconds left and made 1 of 2 free throws to send the game to overtime. You’d think Houston would realize the gravity of the situation and turn up its intensity in the extra period. Instead, the Rockets stood idly by while the Hornets rattled off a 9-0 run to deal the Rocks a dagger of a loss. Eric Gordon scored a game-high 27 points, outdoing Goran Dragic’s 23, and improbably, New Orleans improved to 7-3 over its last 10 games.

Heat 83, Bulls 72

LeBron James went for 27 points, 11 rebounds and 6 dimes, Dwyane Wade dropped 18 and the Heat exacted revenge on the Bulls, while pulling to within 1.5 games of the top spot in the East. With no Derrick Rose, the Bulls built an early lead, but from 3:30 in the first quarter on, Chicago shot a dysmal 27 percent from the field, finishing with a season-low 72 points. Miami’s D locked down, fueled by the extra chippy-ness of the potential Eastern Conference Finals preview. The two teams combined for 4 techs, 2 flagrant fouls and 1 ejection—James Jones for a shove/mush of Joakim Noah’s face—and one of the hardest picks I’ve ever seen. DWade probably could have been tossed, too, for his blatant elbow on Rip Hamilton. John Lucas led the Bulls with 16 points and Noah had 15 and 10. Miami and Chicago split their regular season series, 2-2.

Suns 93, Clippers 90

More skirmishes in this game, too, as Jared Dudley got all “What’s up” in Blake Griffin’s face, then Robin Lopez earned an ejection midway through the fourth quarter for a flagrant foul on Griffin as he headed toward a fast break throwdown. At that point, with the game still hanging in the balance—along with the Suns’ Playoff hopes—Steve Nash re-entered the game after his normal fourth-quarter rest and promptly put his imprint on the game. Nash (13 points, 6 assists) blew past BG and went glass to tie the game at 88 with just over a minute to play, then hit a pair of free throws to put Phoenix in front 91-90 with 25 ticks left. Chris Paul (19 points, 10 assists) got the call on Lob City’s final possession, but his driving layup was swatted away from behind by Sebastian Telfair, who played great defense all night, finished with 13 points and 3 assists in 16 minutes and was on the floor with Nash for much of crunch time. Phoenix is currently the 8-seed out West, holding the tiebreaker over Utah.

Line of the Night: Bron Bron had a nice night, but give David West credit for his 21, 14 and 7.

Moment of the Night: When LeBron’s doing this circus-type ish, it’s tough to compete with the Heat.

Dunk of the Night: A relatively routine Blake finish from CP3.

Tonight: Pete’s back for the last weekend Post Ups of the regular season. How crazy is that!

someone tell me what the heat did differently this time against the bulls so I can pray they do it every time they play them.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

What the hell is Wade’s problem? Seriously that elbow was so wrong and then the way he acted after he did it, just disgusting. I don’t know why every single Bulls player on the floor did aboslutely nothing but it’s starting to become a trend. How about sticking up for your guy? I wish I was on that floor atleast I would’ve tried something, yes I would’ve gotten my ass kicked like no one has ever seen before but show some toughness for god’s sake, this is getting pathetic.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

Well Rip pushed first, Wade just pushed a lot harder. The Bulls are the most annoying team in the league, Noah and Boozer actively try and get under peoples skin. Noah’s foul on Jordan Crawford a few games back was a lot worse than Wades forearm/elbow.

  • RobbieJay

@jahmai the bulls do alot of little dirty plays, prime example:CJ Watson. but anyways, i think this solidified LeBrons MVP campaign. wade was off, no bosh, and LeBron basically carried them.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

@AllBall, And the Heat are not annoying? BTW if you’re rooting for one team probably every other team that’s a challenge to your (in general) favorite team is annoying imo. Did you read the post up? Even Abe said Wade could’ve been tossed, and should’ve been if you ask me. Rip’s little push is nothing it happens all the time it wasn’t painful it wasn’t dirty it weren’t three consecutives elbows or anything but Wade got all MMA on Rip, and it sure as hell didn’t look like an accident.

  • MUBWAR

allball let’s just say the bulls and heat don’t like each other. I taught I was watching a playoff game last night. I know Blake lives in L.A. but the dude should be ejected for excessive acting.

  • backboard

what the heck is wrong with the bulls players? no one got in dwades face? you cant let him do that and then even let him talk smack towards Hamilton… also: how is that ref going to stand right in front of lucas and lebron when he set that pick and just watch without calling anything? that was crazy. lastly, is it me or is CP3 always to first to jump into something… yh, he got heart but if i was a player i would be like: man, not you again… little annoying.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

I don’t like the Heat (although I can’t help but like LeBron this year), the only team I root for is the Clippers, although not very actively, and that is only because I am a Chris Paul fan. Boozer and Noah are just really annoying as a neutral observer.

  • Myung

Tonight, Larry Drew and Doc Rivers have every reason to sit their starters. Mathematically speaking, we’re 93% certain to draw Boston in Round 1. Neither coach/team really has anything to play for tonight.

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-ray

    LOL @ Jahmai
You would have got your a$$ handed to you man. I loved that shove though but a lot of acting by Rip. I think the Heat are much tougher than people would like to think.

  • Myung

The WORST part about playing Boston in the Postseason isn’t that they’re playing great (which they are). It’s that their FANS are so vocal and that ours are so terrible. The best visiting fans (at least here in Atlanta) are LA, NY, Chicago, and Boston. I’ve been to all those games before… but no one reps their team in Atlanta harder than Celtics fans (I’d say NY is a close second). It’s going to be REALLY embarrassing to have nationally televised home games where the crowd is green clad. The Celtics are essentially going to get between 4 and 7 home games, depending on how long the series goes. I went to the Hawks-Celtics series in 2008, and it was probably 40% Boston fans. Thankfully, we won all three home games that year (essentially shutting up their fans at the end of the games), but I almost feel like there are even MORE Boston fans in attendance now compared to back in 2008. Pretty sad.

  • Heals

^^^I know Bos is resting RayRay’s ankle and Rondo’s back, wrist, etc., but it became quite clear earlier this week that the C’s have no qualms about starting off in Atl. Make no mistake every game could be VERY ugly, even more chippy, but ultimately close games. Ditto on the influx of fans this year and last year, especially that last game where you had the Green Regime going wild most of the game, then Atl cameback and the Hawks fans got loud…

  • logues

Myung: hawks dont stand a chance against the celtics

  • Myung

Here’s what the C’s have going for them: Veteran players who know how to win in the Postseason. They’re the hottest team in the East. Rondo is playing out of his mind. Doc Rivers > Larry Drew. The Celtics fans will be vocal, both in Boston AND ATLANTA. A history of beating Atlanta, even this season. All that being said, I still think we can beat them. First of all, we need Al Horford back. He hasn’t really said he’ll be back by the First Round, but he’s getting closer to returning each day. That would be a huge boost for us. Secondly, we’re not afraid of Boston. We’ve played them tough for the past 5 seasons, and there’s no reason to think they will just run all over us. We’re a veteran laden team now (no longer than young squad that went up against them and took them to 7 games in 2008). Are we a championship team? No. But again, we’re not going to just roll over and die. Will we win the series? I don’t like our chances, but to say we don’t have a chance? C’mon. The 2012 Celtics aren’t the 1986 version or the 1996 Bulls or the Showtime Lakers. They’re a very flawed team that just happens to be rolling the past month. I know every talking head out there is going to pick Boston to win in a cakewalk, but the Hawks just might surprise some folks.

  • gercruise

the bulls play dirty. and that lebron pick where john lucas ran off is really a no call

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

lol @ D-Wade’s fake tough guy act. He’s a cheap player and that was a cheap shot by him. RIP was just making space, he wasnt throwing elbows. How can you possibly say that was acting by RIP? It’s not like he expected Dwade to go and act like a b*tch like that. Most people who get shoved off gaurd would fall.

  • Myung

Just FYI, probably 90% of the “experts” predicted Orlando to win in Round 1 last year, and the Hawks got the last laugh.

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-ray

Wayno it was excessive acting. You mean that I guy showing with his off elbow and I’m at a stand still can knock my a$$ into the front row? F*ck out of here with that. I just don’t see how in the world he went flying like that. Maybe he would of stumbled back but damn you would of thought he got tackled.

  • logues

cosign Wayno. if ur not expecting to be shoved with a bow like that ur prolly gonna be off balance. and wade is quite a bit bigger than rip. rip is a pretty skinny dude

  • http://slamonline.com/ Abe Schwadron

If we’re talking “annoying,” let’s not leave out the Clippers. Frustrating to watch a game when every single call elicits a reaction/complaint from multiple players and/or their bench (warranted or not).

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

He’d have to be able to see the future to even be able to act to that dude. Rip is skinny and didn’t even see it coming, how would he have time to even react, let alone flop. He had no chance to even brace for it.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

“I’m so tough, I’m gonna give you a cheap elbow when you’re not expecting it and you’re holding a ball, then I’m gonna talk sh*t about it like I’m a bad@ss” lol

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-ray

Cosign Abe the Clippers are way more annoying than the Heat and Bulls. I probably feel they are more annoying because I live in LA hear their “fans” and just the whole nine.

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-talk/2011 Diesel

I can understand other people thinking the Bulls are annoying, but dirty? Absolutely not. I had a love hate thing going on with John Lucas yesterday. I loved that he was the only Bull to actually get fired up by the Heat’s cheap shots and translate that into playing harder. But then he also let his anger take over at the end and he was shooting some crazy shots that I think took the team out of the game. I don’t have a problem with the cheap shots, but the Bulls need to give it back a little too..within the rules of the game. I wanted Noah to level Wade on the very next play after the elbow thing. Instead he gave him an uncontested layup.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

T-ray, no that’s not the reason, the Clips are very annoying.

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-ray

    Cosign Diesel
I loved the fact Lucas is the smallest guy that was going the hardest. It did mess up his mindset at the end of the game and the Bulls couldn’t buy a basket at one stretch of the game.
    AllBall
I know you’re a CP3 fan but is it me or is he way more annoying in LA than he was in New Orleans? Never had the chance to watch him that much before but now that I see him all the time I realized that he’s a prick.

  • T-Money

chicago got punked last night. noah, booze and jl3 spent all game talking but on 3 different occasions when it was time to step to (jj’s flagrant, dwade’s shove, bron’s screen)… no one did anything! it’s really weird, whenever a bull gets decked they all rush to pick him up but they don’t even look at the agressor.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Jaredy Dudley kept the Suns season from setting. With 3:54 left in the 3rd quarter the Suns were trailing (67-58) by 9 points, then Jared happend…he sparked his team when he got hit with that tech for getting in Blake Griffin’s face, who was still acting cranky over getting hit in the face by the Polish Hammer. From the moment Jared got hit with the tech, the Suns outscored the Clippers 33-23 the rest of the way. Jared Dudley – 18 pts on 7-14 shooting, 4 of 7 from behind the arc, and to go with 4 dimes. This is who Landry Fields should pattern his game after.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

@ T-Money – That’s called smart…escelating the situation serves no purpose, let the refs penalize the other team and just keep cool and stay in the game. That’s smart basketball. This whole “I’m a tough guy, I’m not gonna stand to be disrespected like that” is a load of sh*t. Just move on and play. If someone is continuing to threaten yo or a friend, or actually hurt someone, then maybe, but that clearly wasn’t the case.

  • http://slamonline.com Slick Ric

lol @ the bulls play dirty, examples?

  • ron g

The bulls play hard, not dirty and that often gets under opposition teams skins. As soon as the game got physical the bulls had a bad time reacting to that style of play. Eventually the bulls will have to stand up because its the same reason why teams throw Rose around during the season.

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

Blake Griffin has gotten to be ridiculously annoying. Jumping directly into a stationary defender is not a foul on them. Pulling down someone who has you boxed out is a foul on you. Hard fouls happen, they’re not flagrant. No chance was Robin Lopez’s foul a flagrant 2. Flagrant 1 MAYBE, but not “excessive.” Hell of a pick by LeBron, but it looked like he retaliated way too strongly against Lucas. Wade is pathetic.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I had a game last night so I missed the whole second half. What was all of that about? The Wade push, where did that come from/why did he do that?

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

No, honestly T-ray Paul has been like this for a while. I can’t remember him being this bad when he blew up his second and third years though.

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-ray

Oh I was just curious because he’s been acting like a douche this year. I was wondering if it was just the mentality players get when they go to big cities with big markets. I remember him being a dirty little bastard hitting people in the family jewels though.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iF30WneDtQc Datkid

i mean rip definitely threw an elbow at wade first tho…… and then flopped like his life depended on it and that pick by lebron was totally legal.

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-talk/2011 Diesel

Haha, t-money is a lawyer all. So you know that he’s the “touch me and I’ll sue” type of guy. But on here, he’s street soldier t-money yo! Nobody look at me funny or I’ll shank you in the shower!

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-talk/2011 Diesel

@Datkid – did he throw an elbow or did he swing his elbow to clear space like Wade does on almost every single possession?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I thought just E-Boy was the lawyer?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

RIP didn’t “throw an elbow”, it was a routine move to clear space, vastly different than Wade’s cheap shot.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

The only part that could be considered a flop was RIP continuing to roll when he hit the ground…it’s pretty easy to fall when you get shoved without expecting it.

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-ray

I just think Wade was frustrated cuz they were talking way before that so he probably said something out of line and he lost it lol I read his lips he was like “you got one more f*cking time” lol I lost it after that cuz that’s some sh*t I use to say playing ball. Dude was holding my shorts and hit me in the jaw with an elbow so I warned him. The next play down I set a pick for my guy and put my elbow right in his chest like Chris Webber did John Stockton.

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-talk/2011 Diesel

I could be wrong but I thought they both were nbk.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iF30WneDtQc Datkid

diesel IMO he did kind of throw an elbow at him but he just made it look like he was clearing space, but i’ll admit that i’m wildly biased. but really you don’t just throw somebody out of bounds for no reason. RIP HAD to have thrown an elbow at him.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iF30WneDtQc Datkid

who replaces dwight howard on the olympic team? who’s the best person and why. GO!

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

no biggie i was just wonderin. it would be fitting that both our resident Heat people are Lawyers though.

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-ray

Chandler because he’s been there before and is quick enough to guard versatile 4s and 5s.

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-talk/2011 Diesel

I say forget the center position and just run every other team off the court. Replace Howard with Bosh in the starting lineup and just add another power forward to the bench. We don’t need any true centers on the team.

  • T-Money

who’s talking about hurting guys and throwing punches? no one has played competitive ball or what? miami knows they can do whatever they want to chicago’s stars and there will be no consequences. i was amazed that no one put dwade on his -ss when he drove the lane just after decking rip hamilton.

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-ray

I;m really interested see how the US does without Kobe being as dominant as he was in 08. He was the difference maker and so was Melo at the 4 spot. That team was crazy good.
