Post Up: The Countdown

Phoenix stays alive, Miami beats Chicago and time is running out for the Rockets and Bucks.

by Abe Schwadron | @abe_squad

There is officially one full week of regular season basketball left to play. Strap in.

Pacers 118, Bucks 109

On the same night Indiana clinched home-court advantage in the first round of the Playoffs, the Bucks took yet another step back in their attempt to steal the No. 8 seed from Philadelphia. David West played his butt off, finishing with 21 points, 14 rebounds and 7 assists (one a pinpoint full-court pass), while Danny Granger and George Hill packed the scoring punch, combining for 51 points. Brandon Jennings had 27 points to lead the Bucks, but he and Monta Ellis shot a combined 13-37 form the floor. Milwaukee lost its third straight game and now sits 3 full games behind the Sixers. Larry Sanders, for one, doesn’t seem happy about it:

Timberwolves 91, Pistons 80

Minnesota snapped an 11-game losing streak, leading from start to finish and by as many as 23 behind Nikola Pekovic’s 23 points and double-doubles from JJ Barea (13 points, 12 assists) and Anthony Randolph (15 points, 10 rebounds). The Wolves held Detroit to 37 percent shooting—a good number considering the Pistons missed their final 10 shots of the first quarter and shot 29 percent in the first half. Tayshaun Prince scored a team-high 18 points, but it was at the point guard spot where Lawrence Frank would probably like to have last night’s playing time decisions back. Brandon Knight started, played 28 minutes and shot just 2-12 from the field with 5 points and only 1 assist, while Will Bynum’s 12 late minutes produced 17 points and nearly got the Pistons back into the game.

Hornets 105, Rockets 99

With New Orleans leading by 1 and under 30 seconds to play, it looked like a Chase Budinger (22 points) missed jumper would wrap up a rare Hornets win and send the Rockets to a crushing sixth straight L. But Courtney Lee caught Greivis Vasquez napping on the defensive rebound, stole the ball, got fouled with 15 seconds left and made 1 of 2 free throws to send the game to overtime. You’d think Houston would realize the gravity of the situation and turn up its intensity in the extra period. Instead, the Rockets stood idly by while the Hornets rattled off a 9-0 run to deal the Rocks a dagger of a loss. Eric Gordon scored a game-high 27 points, outdoing Goran Dragic’s 23, and improbably, New Orleans improved to 7-3 over its last 10 games.

Heat 83, Bulls 72

LeBron James went for 27 points, 11 rebounds and 6 dimes, Dwyane Wade dropped 18 and the Heat exacted revenge on the Bulls, while pulling to within 1.5 games of the top spot in the East. With no Derrick Rose, the Bulls built an early lead, but from 3:30 in the first quarter on, Chicago shot a dysmal 27 percent from the field, finishing with a season-low 72 points. Miami’s D locked down, fueled by the extra chippy-ness of the potential Eastern Conference Finals preview. The two teams combined for 4 techs, 2 flagrant fouls and 1 ejection—James Jones for a shove/mush of Joakim Noah’s face—and one of the hardest picks I’ve ever seen. DWade probably could have been tossed, too, for his blatant elbow on Rip Hamilton. John Lucas led the Bulls with 16 points and Noah had 15 and 10. Miami and Chicago split their regular season series, 2-2.

Suns 93, Clippers 90

More skirmishes in this game, too, as Jared Dudley got all “What’s up” in Blake Griffin’s face, then Robin Lopez earned an ejection midway through the fourth quarter for a flagrant foul on Griffin as he headed toward a fast break throwdown. At that point, with the game still hanging in the balance—along with the Suns’ Playoff hopes—Steve Nash re-entered the game after his normal fourth-quarter rest and promptly put his imprint on the game. Nash (13 points, 6 assists) blew past BG and went glass to tie the game at 88 with just over a minute to play, then hit a pair of free throws to put Phoenix in front 91-90 with 25 ticks left. Chris Paul (19 points, 10 assists) got the call on Lob City’s final possession, but his driving layup was swatted away from behind by Sebastian Telfair, who played great defense all night, finished with 13 points and 3 assists in 16 minutes and was on the floor with Nash for much of crunch time. Phoenix is currently the 8-seed out West, holding the tiebreaker over Utah.

Line of the Night: Bron Bron had a nice night, but give David West credit for his 21, 14 and 7.

Moment of the Night: When LeBron’s doing this circus-type ish, it’s tough to compete with the Heat.

Dunk of the Night: A relatively routine Blake finish from CP3.

Tonight: Pete’s back for the last weekend Post Ups of the regular season. How crazy is that!

Who Else was sleepin on the Suns to start the season? they wakin ppl up. A first round matchup between Suns and Spurs? Classic.

    “What’s up?”
“No, really Blake, I’m curious what’s going on.”
    “Huh?”
    “What’s up?”
    “Yeah!”
    “What’s up…”
    “Yeah.”

T-Ray, I hope KB passes the torch Olympic wise. D-Wade, Bron, Melo, Durant are all better for team USA to win. Kobe still can play a vital role, but they just plainly don’t need the 1 on 1 master. They can run everyone out of the building every single night. Only if the game comes down to the wire will they actually “need” Kobe.
I think no center is needed for most teams, but to be honest, against Spain i’d like to have a big guy. Andrew Bynum really should be added to the roster just to give them a dominant inside presence when needed.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Why is it always assumed that in order to respond to a cheap shot you start a fight. You could just push a guy. Or get in his face and level someone the next play. Despite urban legend fights have never been that common in the league.
And Rip made a regular move that included an elbow. Wade overreacted completely. The pick was legal. Completely.

If the Playoffs started today my preseason predictions would be off by 2. I didn’t have Philadelphia making the playoffs and had Milwuakee in. And I had Denver out and Portland in.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

I know were all hating on Blake today, but don’t we want him on the Olympic roster? Just for 10 mins a game to throw down embarrassing hammers on every single country. Don’t we want that? A little Vince 2.0 action on Serge and the Gasols :)

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

So Allen, you think people should just walk away? Thought that’s how you make yourself a punk b*tch. I’m confused…

  • http://Slamonline.com 1982

Miami had home court on a lot of those nocalls. But it wasn’t a one-sided game. A lot of pushing and holding on boh sides – and a lot of playoff atmosphere ball. When Reggie said he was loving the physical play after the shove, I couldn’t help but agree with him.

That is how it is nowadays, no one stands up for their teammates. Everyone is afraid of getting fined or suspended, so they sit by and watch teammates get abused (example, Clippers and BGriff). Opponents will continue to cheap shot and hard foul certain players because they know their will be no repercussion from their teammates.

  • bobbyD

    @Wayno – You sound like Rip’s mum.

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-ray

Yea I agree Lake. It was just awesome seeing him ball out with Wade, Bron, Melo etc. Either way this team will be ok this year in London. The real interesting thing will be who makes the cut at the PG position.

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

nbk, you had phoenix in the playoffs?

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

If that meatballs eboy is a lawyer, then I pity who he represents. Real talk, Cliff. Lol

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Yea I said 8 would be between them and Houston – I sided with PHX because of Nash.

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

ahh good call, the west I had phoenix out and portland in and I thought phoenix would be 10th behind houston. I had the east all right (not the seeds, just the teams).

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Good sh*t. The Dwight and SJax saga fugged up my east predictions. I didn’t come close on the seedings

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

actually I think I may have had NJ in and orlando out cause i was expecting a healthy brook lopez for a little bit and then a trade for dwight.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

Went to the Suns/Clippers game last night. When CP3 isn’t concerned about setting up everybody and feeding Blake’s non-existent post-game, he is amazing. Granted, the All World defense of Steve Nash was guarding him for most stretches but when takes over a game, he is good. I also don’t understand why fans cheer vicious hits on the other team’s airborne player. It’s stupid.

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

who do you guys think would be a harder second round matchup for the bulls? celtics or pacers?

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-ray

I would say the Pacers because they have a chip on their shoulder from last year and they’re better than last season.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

I just can’t bring myself to count out the Celts. They’ve been playing very well. Rondo is in beast mode, and KG looks young(er) again.

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

Why do we assume that the Pacers will beat Orlando? The Magic swept them this year (some by blowouts). Yeah, Dwight is gone, but it’ll still be a competitive series.

  • http://sfjklf.com Jukai

A little confused that Allen threw a sh*tfit when Haywood threw his arm out at a grabbing Delonte on a normal basketball play we see every day, but referred to Hamilton’s elbow as a “normal move.” Favoritism much?
I was glued to the TV cheering wildly at the Suns game, but I can’t feel like they still don’t have much of a chance. They’ve probably climbed over Houston but I totally overlooked Utah…
Phoenix has Denver, UTAH, and San Antonio….
Utah has Magic (without Dwight), PHOENIX, and the Trailblazers…
So I’m pretty confident Phoenix can beat Utah, but given that Utah is gonna beat the Magic and the TBs, Phoenix has to beat Denver (doable) or San Antonio (unlikely… UNLESS Pop wants to rest his starters, which my fingers are crossed).
    It’s gonna be really tough.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

@ Caboose – While I agree that anything can happen…there is next to no chance that Orlando – Dwight beats any other playoff team in a series. Dwight means way too much to them.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Orlando is done Caboose. They don’t stand a chance without Dwight.

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

YOU GOTTA BELIEVE IN MAGIC! Ok, yeah, they’re done.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

There’s a cool article on Gordon Hayward on NBA .com. I guess keeping his emotions in check has been something he’s always been able to do and puts an emphasis on. Or being a “b*tch” as some would look at it…
Yeaaaaah, Orlando is done haha. Sorry. Worse part is they would have been a fun(/dangerous) team to watch in the playoffs.

  • Da-Meat-Hook

Not sure if serious, Caboose . . .

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

btw, did anyone see that Tony Parker is not even in the top 10 on the R2MVP on nba.com?? thats just crazy.. Kevin Love is 7th and his team has 26 wins.. wtf

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

idk, Parker is 100% definitely in the top 5.

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-ray

If there’s one thing I’ve learned is to not take what either ESPN or NBA.com say as law.

  • MUBWAR

some of us here are better nba bloggers then most nba and espn analysts. The only thing I agreed with was the 30th spot of the power ranking on NBA.com last week
    the bobcats: this team stinks!!

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

Never trust NBA.com, their rankings are…laughable. And obviously biased. Tony Parker deserves All-NBA 1st Team consideration. Speaking of, who does everybody have as their 1st team?

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-ray

    Caboose
    TP
    Kobe
    Bron
    Durant
    Love

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

my first team is dwight, durant, lebron, kobe, paul

  • MUBWAR

Westbrook Kobe James Durant (Love or Dwight)

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

    TP Kobe, Bron, Durant, Love

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Noah does the most talking but when it comes down to stepping up and defending his teammates, he’s nowhere to be found. The dog that barks the loudest usually has the smallest bite.

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

Love just transmogrified into a center?

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

I just saw that MVP ranking on NBA.com and I’m not surprised the one bit. The NBA is in a business to market all it’s big name stars and teams, so it shouldn’t surprise anyone when they have Melo, Bynum, Wade and Love on there and the best player (TP) on the best team out west is nowhere to be found.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

I cant really pick a first team. Either,
. CP, Wade, James, Durant, Howard
    . Or
. TP, Kobe, James, Durant, Howard

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

Once again nbk, I share your opinion.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

It’s weirD because literally Wade and Paul have been the best 2 guards. But for their respective teams I’d say Parker and Bryant have done more. Parker and Paul are barely separated either way though. Like 1A and 1A.1

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

I think if I had to pick at this point, I’d take Parker and Kobe. Yeah Kobe hasn’t been terribly efficient, but he will be the scoring champ, the rest of his stats are pretty, and despite ESPN opinion, he still drives the Lakers. As for Parker, he’s carried the Spurs numerous times this season and has them playing championship (as opposed to just Playoff in the case of the Clips) ball.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Yeah. I don’t know what I would vote if I had that opportunity. I’d probably decide after the season ends

  • http://sfjklf.com Jukai

    NBK:
    Parker, Kobe, Durant, James, Howard

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

    Yup yup, cosign Jukai.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Looks like the Pacers will get a layup in the first round now, due to my Knicks taking tonight off.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Jukai
Delonte caught an elbow to the head. Comparing that to what Rip did is asinine. And even you do want to compare go read what I said about the move again and stop depending on your faulty memory.

  • shutup

Moving pick and rolls are dirty plays imo, and the bigs have very active hands and get away with a lot of excessive contact, does it make it dirty? not so much but it still is very annoying when the announcers classify that as good defense.
