Report: Stan Van Gundy Thinking of Quitting After the Season

Said to be fed up with the Dwight Howard drama in Orlando, there’s growing chatter that Magic head coach Stan Van Gundy might walk away from the job when this season comes to an end. Per Hoopsworld: “A growing number of people within the organization believe that Van Gundy will quit after the season, mainly because he doesn’t want to go through the Howard circus again next season. Sources close to the situation say that Van Gundy was ready for the organization to move Howard at the trade deadline so that the franchise could move on and once again focus on winning games. He’s not interested in going through that drama again next season. Van Gundy would be one of the top coaches on the market and would have no problem finding a job elsewhere. The New York Knicks and Portland Trail Blazers are two teams that would likely throw a lot of money at Van Gundy this offseason. Whether Van Gundy quits or gets fired, one name that has come up as a possible replacement in Orlando is Nate McMillan. As ESPN’s Marc Stein wrote on Friday, McMillan is someone that the Magic would target should Van Gundy leave. Howard would be behind the hiring since the two men have gotten to know each other during their time with Team USA. There have been rumblings that Howard presented the front office with a list of coaches that he’d like them to pursue this summer, which lends credence to the idea that Van Gundy is gone after this season.”

I don’t rate Van Gundy as a coach because of his stubborness about jacking 3s, but he’s shown the capacity to make stretch-4s stars, so Portland would be a great fit. Van Gundy’s system would be perfect for helping Aldridge take that next step. Of course, they’d probably need to find a C who can command double-teams first (Lopez, Kaman anyone?).

SUPPOSEDLY WORD HERE IN ORLANDO THAT NATE MCMILLAN IS THE FRONT RUNNER FOR THE JOB

the only reason the magic shoot 3′s its cause like van gunny said himself, ” who is gonna drive to the rim” there aint no one, now if we would’ve got mont a ellis then it would’ve been a different story

It’s considered good strategy to say you are thinking of quitting when you are sure you will get fired.

Portland and the Clippers should be banging on that man door. He took a flawed team to the finals with Rafer Alston and Anthony Johnson running the point to the finals. Made Dwight Howard into a top 10 player and Jameer Nelson into a top 10 pg. The man can coach. Plus the play he drew up for Courtney lee in the finals was brilliant. Give him the clippers roster and I guarantee that’s an top 3 team in the west. But then again who wants to play for Donald Sterling? So I guess it’s Portland.

Vince Carter was going to drive to the rim in 09-10, but Van Gundy turned him into even more of a jump shooter, the Magic offence is far too simple to succeed in the playoffs (and don’t bring up the 08-09 playoffs because the Cavs offence was even simpler and the Magic would never have made it past a healthy Boston that year).

He should go spend some with his family

You can tell this report is fiction: it says Stan Van Gundy is disinterested in drama.
