Stan Van Gundy Says Dwight Howard Wants Him Fired; Howard Denies it

What an unmitigated disaster that is currently developing in Orlando. Following a recent report that Dwight Howard asked the Magic to fire their head coach, Stan Van Gundy confirmed the story this afternoon to reporters. Moments later, Dwight said it’s not true. Awkwaaaaard. Per the Orlando Sentinel: “I know he has,’ Van Gundy told reporters after the Magic completed their shootaround. ‘That’s just the way it is. Again, I’ve been dealing with that all year. It’s not anything real bothersome. You go out and do your job.’ Asked if it makes it harder to coach given that he thinks Howard is not committed to him, Van Gundy responded, ‘It’s not a matter of being committed to me. It’s a matter of being committed to the team and trying to do everything you can to help the team win games. That’s all I’m concerned with. As far as the other stuff, I don’t think that matters. I don’t need love and support here at my job. I’ll turn to my family for that. I don’t need these guys giving me hugs and pats on the back.’ Asked how he knows it’s true, Van Gundy said, ‘I was told it was true by people in our management right from the top.’ [...] When Howard was asked point blank if he asked to have Van Gundy fired, Howard, responded, ‘What did I just say yesterday? I know you guys watch ESPN.’ Later, Howard said: ‘Whatever happens at the end of the season is not under my control. I am a player for the Magic. I am not the GM. I am not [team owner] Rich DeVos. I am not [CEO] Alex Martins. So that’s not my job. So you guys should stop with every other week it’s trying to find something, because there’s nothing. There’s nothing. I haven’t said anything to anybody about anything. Our main concern is winning. So all the other stuff should stop.’”

This is my way of saying “Fire ME!!!”

  • Marc

smh. I really don’t like SVG. I think somethings shouldn’t be told to the media. This is going to create an awkward situation.

dwight howard is a team killer. He has done nothing but complain. They should fire them both. The funniest part about it is dwight’s not that good. Do you really want this guy messing up your chemistry? I would not want him there criticizing his coach, his GM, and his teammates.Just screw with him and give van gundy a raise, and trade dwight to the wizards for john wall.

  • RickyRude

I agree with you Marc, but I also understand Stan’s frustrations and where he’s coming from. He had roller coaster of a season with all the drama surrounding Dwight, and most of it being self-inflicted by D12 himself. To me it’s very cowardly from Howard to go to management and try to get your coach fired. Be a man, go sit down and talk 1 on 1 with Stan and work out whatever differences you two may have. Simple as that. Grown man act. Not go behind the guy’s back. I understand how Stan feels. He’s right too, it’s not about love and hugs with the team, but respect and wanting to win each and every night, a level of professionalism.

Not the right move by SVG but with all this Dwight BS he’s had to deal with all season, I can’t blame him for reacting the way he did. If Dwight wanted a coaching change, as a franchise player, I can respect his right to request changes but do that ish during the offseason, not just before a playoff run.

Lol SVG defends Dwight after alleged punch, Dwight asks SVG to leave

  • abaci

SVG clearly knows he is gone. Im sure he is frustrated but this isn’t going to help matters.

Jeez, what a petty, dysfunctional mess. Charles Oakley needs to whip a ball at both SVG and Dwight’s faces.

  • http://jsklff.com Jukai

    Shoulda traded Dwight.

  • Omar

(Sighs) SVG is totally wrong in this case! Dwight is a drama queen but SVG just cannot do this now!!!

Dwight, it gets harder and harder every day to defend you. I think he lacks the understanding that there are intermediates in life. To him, it’s either: Keep SVG without any changes at all or fire SVG; Stay with the Magic and go nowhere or leave the Magic and win a ring; Go in the dunk contest and win or don’t go in; Be happy on the court or be whiny on the court. There’s gray areas in between all of those, but based on everything this season, it seems like he can’t see them.

Howard is an idiot. Stupid dummy. And yes I know those two sentences were redundant in the extreme.

I’m sick of Dwight’s bitch ass he’s not that good simple and plain

  • T-Money

i have very little respect for dwight, too wishy washy. i have no issue with him wanting svg gone but damn man, you can’t have everything! he wants it all and none of the blame. svg is also an idiot for going to the media, these things are kept in house. he’s essentially trying to take everybody down with him.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

lol at the Magic for putting themselves in this position. They deserve this for rewarding Dwight’s behavior. No offense Caboose.

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

Haha none taken, the management of the team since June 14, 2009 has been pretty atrocious…

  • bike

This is the inherent problem with all nba prima donnas who do what Dwight is doing—there is no one with the authority to discipline the guy. He doesn’t have to listen to anyone or be accountable for his immature nonsense. Everyone in the Orlando organization: the owner, the GM, the coach, his team mates can’t get in this dumb bastards face and tell him to shut the f*ck up.

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

bike: Or SVG tried and now he’s getting fired.

  • Mooney10

Why does Dwight continually try and put his team in these situations, yo wanna talk about a guy who is not a leader. All I can see is a selfish guy who can’t keep his mouth shut and wants the whole organization to bow down to him, kudos to SVG I would have called him out if it were my job as well, just not before playoffs. Dwight needs to learn to shut up and play, stop whining and oh…stop laughing at the end of the bench when you’re team is getting their ass beat, professional?? Should have went to college like a lot of others, he would know respect and know when to keep his dumbass mouth closed…I hate this guy and I wish he could actually take over a game, he will never be in the mention with any of the great centers…baby

What Dwight is doing Bike is trying to please people like you.
He wants everybody to love him and that’s more important than manning up. Look at how Dwill handled his business. He told Utah he wasn’t happy and they needed to fix it or make a move. Utah said “SCREW YOU, ENJOY JERSEY” and that was a smart move by the team. No drama, just a nice trade that’s allowed them to retool and be in the playoff race with decent young talent.
All these other teams let this stuff fester, play out in the media, and in Orlando’s case they were acting like a broad having a “keep a n*gga” baby. Instead of nutting up and trading him as soon as it looked like he was flaking, they wanted to get a great deal and hope that all their money and guilt would make him stay long term. And it killed the team and the already fractious relationship between the player and coach.
And Van Gundy is a whiny prick, who wants things his way and hates admitting that his dumb offense that revolves around tons of three pointers is flawed.

  • LA Huey

Allen’s right about Utah. No single player is bigger than the Jazz, even without Jerry Sloan.

  • IamYOU

SVG doesn’t care if he’s gonna lose his job or not as long as he is not near Howard.

  • don the GSW fan

LOL at the magic right now. they’re actually winning and yet these things are happening. GSW would be happy just to be in a playoff race and i’d bet that when that happens, everyone’s going to focus on WINNING, trying to get the coach fired.

  • RedRum

ok, it is obvious what is happening here. SVG knows he is gone because DH asked for it. He goes on camera and confirms it in order once he gets fired for DH not to be able to defend himself blaming it on management. Scumbag move from SVG but genius at the same time!!! He leaves with his head high AND destroys DHs reputation as a good guy and marks him as a coach-killer! SVG is a bleaping genius!

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

Dwight, why would you opt in for next year when you don’t want to be here? Loyalty? No, you’ve hurt our team more by staying with us, playing horrible and selfishly, ruining team chemistry, and depriving us of a player who actually wants to be here. So, I say this, unless Dwight actually signs an extension with the Magic and demonstrates simply ONE selfless and mature act of commitment, you can consider me no longer a fan of the star of my own team. Seeing Dwight tune out SVG tonight at the Knicks game just proves he simply lied to the media. All he cares about at this point in his career is, well I don’t even know what you’d call it. Selfish infamy?

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

In short, I’ll be smiling the day Dwight’s off my team.

  • http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/39910/knicks-will-miss-lin-during-playoff-push Paul H

I hate to admit It but I respect SVG more than Dwight. Stan should not have done It like that, but I think whatever way he has been told Dwights news, it has rubbed him the wrong way and he has just said F*ck It, i’ll tell It my way. I mean why should he suffer that immature idiot? His offense may well be flawed but I know who I respect more…

  • shutup

Wait is NBK admitting Dwights behavior was wrong??????? Sorry had to get that out my system. I don’t like that Stan can’t keep out of the media also; but he definitely did this outta frustration. Dwight wants to play little games and then deny it, Stan is just calling him on his bullish. Stan knows his days are limited, and he’s still gonna get his checks but he is not going to go quietly. I can’t wait for the interview the day after he gets fired, its gonna be priceless…..
