Steve Nash May Have Played His Final Game as a Phoenix Sun

by Marcel Mutoni @marcel_mutoni

Steve Nash continues to insist that he has “no clue” what the future holds for him, as the 38-year old point guard heads into free agency. Many seem to believe he could have played his last game in a Phoenix Suns uniform last night, in a loss to the visiting San Antonio Spurs.

Nash, who was second in the NBA in assists this season, has repeatedly talked about the need for the Suns’ front-office to make serious roster improvements, something they have time and again failed to do (Phoenix missed the Playoffs for the second straight year), and it might be time for him to look elsewhere as his remarkable career winds down. For now, though, there is only uncertainty.

Per the AZ Republic:

Nash said he might not even allow himself to think about the possible finality of it as he [went] through his day. “It deserves a lot of thought,” Nash said. “It would be an important moment if I don’t play for the Suns again. It could be a big moment.”

On what he needs to see from Suns management to stay: “For me, I just want our team to be as competitive as possible if I were to return. We’ll see. There are a lot of factors involved and I’ll get a chance to sit down and evaluate them all at some point.” [...] On the chances of him staying in Phoenix: “Honestly, I have no clue. I couldn’t predict. I don’t know what the future holds at this point. And I’m actually OK with that. I think now’s the time to maybe get some distance from it and try to find a clear perspective on where I am. Until I do that, I couldn’t put a number on it or take a guess on what the chances are on whether I’ll be back or not.”

Sensing it might be the last time they see him rocking the team colors, Phoenix Suns fans made sure to give Steve Nash a proper send-off last night:

Maybe him and KG will go to Brooklyn with Dwight.

KG isn’t leaving Boston, although he is about his money too. I think he takes a discount for the tradition, but I wouldn’t be surprised if bolted.
Y’all think Ray Allen is going to sign with the Clips?

Steve Nash is a Canadian like me and I want him to consider going to Miami. He will be a great asset to the Heat and will help tem to win the title. Steve Nash at this point in his career need to win a ring or else he may end up not getting one.

Which ever team he decided to play for; I bet he would put into consideration, if he will get a title ring at the end of the season. It’s only fair because he has giving a great deal to the NBA. I wish him all the best in his tough decision making. I so much will love to see him win a ring because he deserves it.

Mos def Allen, and along with that “the man” $$$ comes all the attention/publicity of being “the man” he gets in Phx (and nationally too). You don’t get those things taking less $$$ and a back seat on a contender (unless ya win of course) like you been saying…

  • @boweezy24

Nash Needs a Ray Allen On His Team.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Ray Allen sure won’t be in Boston next year. I can tell you that.

  • LeBrOn 4 MvP!

ya’ll should just stop conlcusions on wher he gon be next year. yall qualified analysts? NO, let steve be nash yall feeling me?

  • http://abcnews.go.com/US/seattle-arrest-questions-cops-dash-cams/story?id=15595576 Allenp

    “qualified analysts.”
    Hilarious.
The qualifications are having an opinion that people agree with or respect. That’s it man.
    People are funny.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I always wondered what made the people who work for ESPN as Columnist more qualified then us in terms of opinion? Is it just a degree is sports journalism? That’s the difference right?

  • Ramnita

    hahaha. Lebron. . just. . .no. .

  • http://abcnews.go.com/US/seattle-arrest-questions-cops-dash-cams/story?id=15595576 Allenp

Now the difference is someone will pay them to talk. That’s it.

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

Nash is the most overrated player of this era. Tayshaun is the most underrated.

  • http://www.twitter.com/gerardhimself Gerard Himself

nbk: i usually am no fan of all these hypothetical talk, but why would Nash go to Brooklyn? If Dwight and KG would end up there, Deron won’t leave. Or maybe you were just kidding. Not sure.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Nah Tarzan, that is Andre Miller. You lead the League in assists and can’t make the All Star team. Really?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I was half kidding. Deron Williams is more than likely going to Dallas, unless Dwight gets traded to Brooklyn right around draft day. If not, as soon as free agency hits, if Brooklyn hasn’t added another star Deron is headed for the hills.
The reasons I said I’m half serious is because of all the rumors i’ve heard
    - I have heard a lot about New Jersey pursuing KG, which I don’t know how realistic that is.
    - I have heard that Dwight will request a trade as soon as the season ends if he hasn’t technically done it already
    - I have heard Nash wants to go to a contender that can pay him what he feels he’s worth. Which right now is none, so if a contender can be made from scratch that would be the only likely destination.

. Other than that, what I said was as you said, purely hypothetical.

Nash is one of the greatest point gaurds to ever play. Dude is the best shooting PG ever, dribbles like “Pistol” Pete, sees the court like Stockton, passses like Magic, is ice at the free throw line and will make the clutch shot or pass 9 out of 10 times. #13 is tough, dedicated, has heart and plays hard every night. Not to mention he’s had he best years after turning 30 and is still one of the best in the game at 38…and he’s 6’3 and Canadian!! Hope he stays in AZ. But if he leaves…Then thanks to him for all the effort and highlights in a PHX jersey. No one deserves a title more than Nash.

  • rloz

@nbk—Nash was 2nd in assists this year on a team with no studs, averaged 12.5 pts , which was 14th in the league and seperated from the 9th spot by 2 points) and shot a better percentage from 2′s, 3′s and free throws than any other point gaurd. To say he’s worth nothing is kinda ignorant for someone who seems to know a lot about players. Check the stats my man…

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

The two time “MVP”, is probably going to stay in Phx selfishly for money reasons, getting a 3 year deal or end up in Orlando with Howard. Nash has had a good, ok career, that really if you look at it is very overrated. He is not a star compared to pass point guards or a leader to me. He never won and Stockton would kill Nash in his sleep. This is how you know the NBA is looking for _____ stars, when a player averages 16pts and 12 assists with a team and gets an MVP because Amare is hurt or because Media is looking for a Great ______ Hope. I can care less where Nash goes, he is not a winner. Phx should have sold for something a long time ago.

Paging mr fredette? Where are you mr fredette? hmmm well he doesnt seem to be in the area, Ill send you to his voicemail…..”this is Jimmer…leave a msg” BEEEEP—-
“Yo Jimmer, its Steve “filthy” mcNashty…..You dont know sh*t”

  • dagwaller

@ Any of you saying that Nash is asking for too much money, or what he wants:

How do you know? Link or you’re lying. And I have a feeling I won’t see any links anytime soon.

    Please.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Put Jalen Rose on the underrated players’ list too. The Pacers were contenders with him and he averaged 20, 5 and 5 for back-to-back years and didn’t make a single All-Star game… I also think Bibby should have cracked at least one ASG squad too, the way he helped the Kings.

Man, it’s amazing that some people think they know about a person just because they took a better deal on a worse team. Perhaps he saw something in that Phoenix team where he knew he could help. He also already had a home in Phoenix after being drafted by them, and considering they were offering much better money and length in the contract at a time when there was a health uncertainty, no kidding he went to Phoenix. As for re-signing with them with a bad team, it wasn’t just about the money or championship aspirations. He didn’t want to move his family. They were comfortable where they were and I don’t see what’s wrong with that. And see, I actually know this because I talked to him and his wife about it last time he stayed at the hotel I work at. We played together in school and were able to have a conversation about it. But go with the supposed sources and draw your own conclusions because we all know there are certain people on this site that once their mind is made up about something, whether they’ve been shown to be wrong or not, they stick with it

  • jimmer

    Sorry, 114ppg.

  • jimmer

not the spurs and thunder – miami and thunder; slide westbrook back to the two, miami don’t have a good pg.

  • Mike From Spain

Nash + Ray Allen on a team with loads of cap space… could it happen? What teams have enough cap space and a big man who can run the pick and roll well? That team would be something in the offensive end. They’d need two tough defensive wings to start and they could be fun to watch.

  • AdamD

I think these conversations about steve nash would be alot different if not for Robert Horrys hip check and diaw and amare’s suspensions back in ’07 playoffs. In the rules the suspensions were justified but i know plenty of debate was had over them back in the day. It certainly affected the series. Whoever won the west that year was taking the title over that Cavs team.

  • http://fjklsf.com Jukai

There’s a lotta fake outrage here, man.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Lebron said he went to Miami to play with his friend and because he only wanted to win. Same with Bosh.
How many folks took them at their word?

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

I drink triple x vitamin water because of this guy. I cut my side burns ‘pointy’ and have a side part because of this guy. I look the other way when i pass, lick my fingers before i dribble and bend my knees at the free throw line because of this guy. i wear the number 13, love the colour orange and work on my lefty lay ups because of this guy…. Steve Nash the one and only guy that gets ‘fake outrage’ on slamonline… I imitate him everywhere I play… i even get called ‘Nash’ as a nicname, by guys I’ve never met… because of this guy. I have a favourite player of ALL TIME and it’s because of this guy. He can go play anywhere for as much as his contract ends up being and it will be his pure unadulterated entitlement.

  • phamie

steve nash please stay in phoenix. gortat and the other suns players needs you for them to shine too.
NASH is thebest PG ever to play the game.

  • Ldub

Its a given that Nash “DESERVES” to play for a contender. PHX is not it. Especially not in the west. Because of Nash’s age and health, it would be best for him to go to a contender such as Mia, LA (lakers), OKC, NY, etc. Somewhere we he is surrounded by enough talent to at least make a run at the title. IMO (and not just because I am a Miami fan)…Miami would be ideal. Chalmers would be a great backup pg and he could learn alot from Nash (should chalmers stay). But with Nash running the show (as the distributor) in Miami…it would be more of a nightmare for teams, than the Heat already are. IQ, Shooting, assists, ball movement, ft%, fast break points etc, would all go up. Make it happen Riley…make it happen!
