Amar’e Stoudemire Wants to Play With Steve Nash in New York

by Marcel Mutoni @marcel_mutoni

The Miami Heat had barely finished putting the New York Knicks out of their mysery for the season, and Amar’e Stoudemire was already beginning his recruitement of prized free agents.

Most Knicks fans made themselves feel better last night by dreaming of a full season with a healthy Jeremy Lin next year, but Stoudemire had other, grander ideas.

STAT told the media that he’d like to team up with Steve Nash again.

Reports the NY Daily News:

Amar’e Stoudemire issued a public plea to Steve Nash, his former Phoenix Suns teammate who will be a free agent on July 1, to join him in New York. “Everyone knows that Steve loves New York and that New York loves Steve,” Stoudemire said. “I love Steve. It would be great to have him here next year.” Ideally, the Knicks would have Nash as their starting point guard next season with Jeremy Lin serving as the understudy.

Nash, who spends part of his summer in Manhattan, has always been enamored with the idea of playing at Madison Square Garden. However, close friends say that if Nash were to sign for the veteran minimum, he will go only to a contending team, which is why Miami is suddenly emerging as a strong candidate. “Why would he want to do that,” Stoudemire said, laughing. “This is a terrible, terrible situation here, right?” In other words, Stoudemire understands that LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Pat Riley and South Beach are very attractive to Nash.

Steve Nash will be one of the biggest names on the free agent market this summer, and the prevailing belief around the League is that his days in Phoenix are likely over.

And even though his former coach Mike D’Antoni is no longer employed by the Knicks, it would be fascinating to watch Nash play on Broadway.

Nash in NYC would mean two things, 1. dope team. 2. no Phil Jackson to coach since Nash isn’t a shooter but a point-guard.

  • Kobester

In 2 years, JLin > Nash. Count on it.

  • Kobester

And I am a big Nash fan. But he’s not getting any younger and still can’t defend.

  • Justin G.

    Nash isn’t a shooter? Really?

  • Yann Blavec

Justin G. Imean he isn’t a player à la John Paxson or Steve Kerr.

  • Justin G.

Kobester, that isn’t saying much considering Nash will then be 40

  • Justin G.

    Ahhhh…spot up shooter. Got ya

  • Dirk Nowitzki’s Mane

Amar’e should be worrying about his own future in NY.

Unless Lin dramatically improves his shooting, passing and decision making ability, I still think Nash would be better than him in 2 years. People like Nash and Kidd can excel for a long time because the main aspects of their games rely on 0 athletic ability.

  • RIGGS

    co-sign…..dirk nowitzki’s mane :\

  • FLIGHT 9

TRADE CARMELO & AMARE FOR JOE JOHNSON AND HORFORD…. THEN SIGN NASH NEXT SEASON..

  • Charles

    He’s going to the Raps.

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

Really, Nash is going to leave the fountain of youth (and health) that is the Suns’ medical staff for the soothing injury-plagued destiny that awaited Knicks PG’s this season?

  • abaci

Favorite line, “However, close friends say that if Nash were to sign for the veteran minimum, he will go only to a contending team,” so they are clearly not talking about NY.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

So basically the Knicks are abandoning defense completely?
    Gotcha.

  • toinefan88

That would be dope! Come to NY Steve!!! Too bad Dantoni couldn’t last until he gets here.

  • AQWORD

Yeah. Come to N.Y. stevie coz Amare’s game is in the gutter without you.

  • Mike

amare wont be there next year anyway. trade him away for a real rebounder and defender.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Mutoni, I think you misspelled misery.

  • Bt

Yeah amare, I’m sure he’s super keen in standing around watching melo play iso ball every second play

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Really everyone? Nobody is going to point this out? Fine.
    .
Amar’e clearly doesn’t understand te salary cap or Steve Nash. One or the other.

the new york knicks are beginning to look something i would try to fix in my high school days. “If i just put these 5 broken stereo elements together with heaps of ducttape this might work.”
Sorry to have to tell you guys my experimental ducttape repair service was not very succesful.
also high fives Dirk Nowitzki’s Mane for best name since…

^You forgot we’re talking bout New York, they want everyone.

  • andynorstrom

How many changes are they going to make to this team? They need to stick to something

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

As long as they keep Lin, 1 season of learning under Steve Nash would be awesome. Of course, that’s if they can sign him… And make a commitment to developing the point guard who is not 38 years old. Look at how good Dragic is now, right? But If the Knicks abandon Lin altogether for Nash that’d be hella stupid. But never underestimate Jim Dolan.

  • Ldub

@yann? Nash isnt a shooter? Somebody sure as hell doesnt watch basketball. Definitely one of the BEST shooters to ever lace them up. Quality not quantity. Thats why his %’s are thru the roof. 90-50-40? Yeah not a shooter me @ss! Nash going to NY would have him running into Miami, Boston and Chicago. It would be in his best interest (if he is going to the east) to go to Miami…who need a PG to distribute to LBJ and Wade. AND can knock down shots with a great %. No knock on Chalmers (who had a great season from 3pt range) but Nash is an upgrade for sure!

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Teddy, the Knicks can offer more to Jeremy Lin than any other team, and still sign him for less than the MLE.
    .
They can’t add Nash. There is just no way he signs for the Vet Minimum. And even if he did, he wouldn’t do it to play with Melo and Mike Woodson. That just doesn’t make any sense.

  • Yann Blavec

@ Ldub, I was talking about the fact that Phil Jackson might come to NYC and that a point-guard like Steve wouldn’t fit since the Triangle is for point-forwards and only needs shooters at the point-guard position. The fact that I’m french probably doesn’t help your understanding.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

    ah, thanks nbk.

  • http://www.fullc0urtpress.com KHOLIDAY

They could sign Jesus Christ to a 10 day contract, aint gonna help em beat the Top teams in the East because Melo needs the rock and everyone is scared to tell him to pass the ball! You see what happened to D’antoni when he tried to rock the boat!

  • robbievanpersie

i think it would be awesome man, suns duo was great, but could they work together with melo because y know melo is low block guy?

Teddy, if you can see something i’m missing that involves adding Nash i would love to hear it though. I just can’t see any way that happens. Despite what the guy who punched a fire extinguisher thinks lol

  • MIGZ

WOW, NEW YORK obviously overseas talent You still have Jeremy Lin clowns, if they want nash, then send LINSANITY to Phenoix i bet theyll get to the playoffs

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

I’d love to see Nash come to the Knicks. He’d get the most out of our frontcourt. It’s kind of unrealistic to think he’d come, but nothing wrong with letting him know we want him. Maybe he wants NY too. We shall see!

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Come to your NY summer home Nash, come home. lol

  • Ldub

@Yann….If D-Fish and his “only corner 3 shooting” a$$ can play in the triangle, then so can Nash. I dont think your heritage has anything to do with it. (its the fact that youre not making an accurate statement that has me not understanding). Basketball is basketball all around the world. And what point forwards are you referring to? Because Fish has been there, the Glove was there, Farmar, even Steve Blake. In Chicago it was Harper and Kerr right? Size of the PG doesnt matter. The IQ does. And when you have 2 of the greatest sg’s to ever play in Kobe and MJ…the offense will work. Nash would actually be great because the triangle involves/requires passing. Which we all know Nash does at a higher level than just about every other PG in the L. And you keep mentioning that you need a shooter. Like I said 90-50-40. Which means 90%FT, 50% FG and 40%3pt. Nash is definitely a shooter from anywhere on the court. Easily can average a 17 and 10. And if you dont think he can do that in Triangle, that involves cuts and backdoors and screens, you are crazy. Nash would kill people in the triangle!!

  • bike

Did Amar’e happen to hit that fire extinguisher with his head too?

  • R32

There’s a stigma about the NY Knicks, big-time players, mediocre results.

  • Starks

yeah stat, worry about D, man, u cant stop Jeffries in practice, u didnt knock no body on their ass during the miami series, u played as soft as charles smith, i say bring nash ship him out

  • KC

Nash would no doubt make the knicks a better run, more efficient offense. Amare would get his touches in the right positions and everyone would get an opportunity to shoot the ball. With that said, this still would not propel them past the heat much less to the NBA Championship.

  • Mas

I hate that dumb ass dudes post things and then complain about other peoples spelling. Stop being dumb first then worry about spelling some the wright guey. Second. I agree that STAT should focus about his own future. Right now I would trade him for David Lee in a heart beat. Smarter, younger and with Tyson playing the 5, Lee could focus on getting his mid range game on; if Carmelo decides to kick it out to him once in a while. Then about Steve Nash. I see him in NY but not as a Knick but as a Net. I’m sure they can offer more pesos and a young solid team with maybe a good lottery pick. Nash-Brooks-Hump-Lopez and Green starting five can get you into the playoffs in the East.

  • http://slamonline.com Datkid

this will not happen. and Phil Jackson is not coming to New York either. ya’ll have basically destroyed yourselves by signing 3 players who can’t work together. melo, amare, and tyson into long @ss deals.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Nash never averaged 17 and 10 before playing in the uptempo style in Phoenix. But y’all think he would average that playing in the triangle at the end of his career.
    Are you people high?

  • Ldub

@mas….Nash is only considering “CONTENDERS”. Brookyln is in a building stage…in which Nash will not even look at. LAL, OKC, SA, MIA, CHI, maybe BOS, are the top teams right now. LAL, MIA would be the best bet for him IMO. Mostly because of the talent they already have there. But I guess saying the “talent they already have there” kinda means contenders doesnt it? Hmph

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Nash is still more than likely going to sign in Phoenix. I don’t know why people think he values winning over money and loyalty. he’s pretty much proven what he values over his career.

  • Ldub

AllenP….Think about this….Yes Nash can distribute as run-n-gun, but wasnt last year one of his best years? (injury free as well). Nash still has some time on the clock and even in a half court set, he can still be effective enuff to hit the open man or open jumper. And if he goes to any triangle based offense, he will get alot of the opportunities as long as the bigs/stars pass it back out to him.

  • crooklyn

Nas yes- Amare no. Name one good thing (basketball related) Stat did this year…

  • INFINITELY

Yeah. Times up for Nash in Phoenix. Loyalty came 1st over winning when it came to demanding a trade. Nash wouldn’t do that, of course. But now, no restrictions and no strings.
Obviously his 1st choice would be to stay, if the organization upgraded the team. But that’s not happening. So, he will leave. Count on it.

  • @boweezy24

Haha JLin Better Be Better Than Nash in 2 Years, Other Wise…. Idk That Would Be Sad. Nash With The Knicks, I Like The Idea. You Still Got Shumpert, Jlin, Bibby, TD, Others. Might Want to Make A Couple Changes Tho.
