Andre Miller Wants to Play for a Title Contender

Soon-to-be free agent Andre Miller – forever bucking against his backup point guard status — made his desires crystal clear after Denver’s season came to an end on Saturday night, and his future with the Nuggets is very much up in the air. Per the Denver Post: “It’s likely the Nuggets will attempt to bring him back after his at-times spectacular playoff series against the Lakers. Miller is the only unrestricted free agent on the roster, so the decision to stay or leave is solely his. ‘I’ll keep my options open,’ Miller said. ‘At this point in my career, if I’m going to be a backup, I’m going to be a backup on a championship-caliber team. Obviously, this team is a good team that’s going to get to the playoffs, but the thing is if they are committed to getting to that next level to compete for that championship.’ […] The Nuggets acquired Miller on draft night last season, a deal with Portland that sent Raymond Felton to the Blazers. While he played the fewest minutes of any season in his career (1,809), he still posted 6.7 assists per contest, only slightly under his career average of 7.2 and second-highest average since the 2006-07 season. ‘I want to be on a team that’s going to compete for a championship, and not use youth as a crutch or inexperience as a crutch,’ Miller said. ‘This team does have guys that can compete and can get out of the first round. It’s just whether I can swallow my pride and deal with being a backup point guard. I have no problem with it, but at the same time I definitely still see myself as a starter in this league. Like I said, you have to swallow your pride sometimes. These young guys are coming in and they’re working for it. So, that’s just part of the business that I’m learning.’”

Never understood why Andre couldn’t catch on with a team and stay there. He was one of the best PGs in the league those early years in Cleveland. And the way he was abusing the Lakers shows he’s still got something in the tank.

always liked him also, old man game. i though he was really going to blow up when he got traded to the clippers, pretty dissapointing. one of the best lop throwers ever though

    Very very good player.
Saying he’s underrated would be underrated.

    bulls!

    Chicago is waiting for you.

Can’t decide if his attitude is more ‘tough old veteran’ or ‘cranky old man’. Or maybe it jumps between those 2 depending on the day.

  • shawnkemp4prez

Andre Miller has that very steady, dependable game like Chauncey Billups. He’s undervalued like Billups, too. I would definitely want him on my team if I were a GM.

  • dma

chicago would be the ideal place for him next year.

  • elmaar

one of the best if not the best post up point guard in the league!
    spurs might snatch him!

  • nic

    Sick pg

  • RunNGun

Will Smith once said, “We’re going to Miami!”

  • jayrose

Chicago would be the perfect scenario for him. He won’t even start the season on the bench. He’s going to start since rose is going to be gone for awhile

  • Ldub

^and then when rose comes back he will be coming off the bench (which is what he doesnt want) so how is that perfect? This is now a PG driven league and I think just about every team has a solid PG that is already better than Miller. He is a great pg, dont get me wrong, but what can he bring to a starting lineup as the pg, that teams dont already have? He should accept a backup role to a great pg and smash the 2nd units in limited minutes. You can have the best of both worlds (being the starter and playing for a contender/championship team).

  • jayrose

@ldub….he said if he does end up being a back up pg he wants to on a chanpionship caliber team…last time I checked bulls are a contender…well there not right now with rose out but I still believe my team are contenders if there defense stay strong.

  • Ldub

    cant*

  • Josh

Read it properly Ldub, he said he wouldn’t mind coming off the bench for a championship caliber team, making Chicago the perfect destination if you ask me.

  • Josh

    Got there before me Jayrose

    cosign Lakeshow.

  • DEN

Chicago wouldnt be a good fit. Sure drose might be out for a while but when he would return andre would come off the bench. He’d probably get even less minutes than he did in denver since he’d be playing behind an allstar. We all now how much minutes an allstar wants to play. Lets say they all like to play 40-45 min if possible. Miller would then play for like 5-15 mins making him veerrry unhappy. Just resign with denver. I doubt any team would start him.

  • Jerome

C’mon guys he said contender, which doesn’t have anything to do with Chicago. AM abused the both the Lakers’ bigs AT THE SAME TIME! (Rahzel voice)

  • LA Huey

    As do I.

  • dan

he wants to play for a contender? which veteran doesnt? ^^

  • http://www.nba.com Red

With Ronnie Brewer probably leaving(maybe Rip?)the Bulls will give Andre Miller starter minutes at the 2 spot although I don’t think Thibs wants to play a small guard at the 2.

    Miami?

  • Landry_legend

    Knicks, Thunder, Dallas?

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

    Could start for the Lakers…..

  • Phillip

Personally i think his value lies in experience. Experience is very valuable for teams lacking team chemistry, like NYK…

Somehow I love his presence in Thunder, where 2 out of 3 scorers can be on court pairing with Miller.

IMHO Miller just ink it with the Thunders!

    Lakers..

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

Why do people still think NY is a TITLE CONTENDER? Hint you guys, they’re not.

  • MAS

Title contender? I don’t see why the NYK’s can’t be considered a title contender. The have a legit center and not much else…I see why.

  • http://minusthebars.blogspot.com Don

I would love to see New York sign Andre Miller, cause our backcourt prospects are hardly what a contending team looks for.

    Will they? I doubt it.

  • http://www.rich-imaging.com Dutch Rich

I don’t know if salary cap allows for it but the knicks need to not attach themselves to the Nash in NY prospect and really try to go after Miller. He would be a great fit along with Lin. They are both constantly in attack mode and get their shots close to the rim which means buffet for Chandler and Stat who needs to ditch those goggles. They really hamper his reaction time.
Good ball-handling from Miller means less ball possession for Melo which is a good thing. Get him the ball late in the shot clock, he doesn’t need much time to operate. Melo and Novak decoy the outside, Chandler and Stat the inside and let the guards roam.
There it is ladies and gentlemen…Championship contender.

  • Pokemon Master Ash Your Mother

lebron james is better than mj .. just saying .. and ur mother

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

Andre Miller is not the key to an 8th seed team suddenly becoming a title contender.

  • Scalabrine for MVP

pokemon i will ask your mother when i see her tonight

  • http://www.rich-imaging.com Dutch Rich

You’re being too kind, they almost didn’t make the 8th seed.
But during early season, projections for the Knicks were a lot different.
They basically played 2/3 rds of the season without a proper PG and when they did the difference was beyond substantial.

  • DEN

At the same time i wish miller didnt resign and that felton doesnt resign with portland. That way felton and the nuggets can reunite

  • FruitMan

    wuttabutta HEAT?

  • http://www.rich-imaging.com Dutch Rich

You want to run Felton and Lawson, that’s legit.
I’m sure Dre would love to go South Beach. Lob City East.
Still think the Knicks make a good fit. He gets you early basket attempts which plays up to the Knicks personnel.
Second attempt put backs, kick outs…could work.
I’ll let somebody else address defensive issues.

  • http://Juanm.garcia@comcast.net NYPlaya

He’s obviously calling out the Heat knowing they have no post presence. LOL

  • Compton 310

I think Andre should either go the Bulls, Thunder or Lakers because Ramon Sessions might not come back. and yeah people will say’s he’s old but he hasn’t miss that many games. Only time he missed some games was when he fouled Blake Griffin

  • ClydeSays

He’s a solid backup at this point. He never had foot speed or a 3 point shot. Ok defender with a short jumper and good passing skills. He’s never been GREAT at anything so he typically gets overlooked. He’d be a good fit in Miami for 20-30mpg
